My two cents input :-)

If your collection is more photos, get a 2 bay D-Link 323. It is more than sufficient to handle it. And it can be set to RAID 1.

If you got tons of video footage,
Get a RAID 1 (or RAID 5 if you got cash to spare) Firewire\eSATA\USB to store the videos.

My home LAN is Gbit level, along with a Planex Gb NAS-01G NAS
The NAS cannot handle the data flow when I drag 10~20 600 Mb files for editing. :-)
And anyway, my family is not interested in raw footage, only resultant videos, so no need to share raw video files.

Hope this helps

Here my setup:

RAID 1 1TB Firewire\eSATA\USB to store video

RAID 5 4TB Firewire\eSATA\USB to store video

320GB Firewire\USB to store photos

NAS for Time Machine backup

I'm using a Mac though, I have quite a few HDD because I'm a video editor :)

I did most of my R&D at http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_nas/Itemid,190/

I got a Dlink 323 on Raid1, 500gbx2 but running out of space now. Performance was great as it support jumbo frame. A bit regret 'cos I should had bought a 4bay instead.

DONT ever buy the linksys nas200. Performance is worst. Unfortunately, I bought it but later replace it with dlink. Now, the linksys is seating in my store room.
