View Full Version : is there a software that can connect to a specific MAC address ??

continuing off from last time, after my constant whining, my dad reset the router. which brings the SSID back to linksys and once again he put a password on the admin page. removed the WPA protection though.
now the problem continues: there are 3 unsecured routers with the same SSID (linksys) within range of my computer, all on different channels though (2,6,11). is it possible to actually connect to my router specifically ? i've got the MAC address on hand via the sticker on the bottom of the router. i tried using the utility provided by my card but it keeps on saying "time out", probably because its trying to connect to the other 2 routers with the same SSID
any ideas ???
TIA

ehh intel's proset wireless software can do that, there's definitely some way to do it for other adapters. what about windows zero config utility ? is there any way to at least filter it out by channels, if not MAC address ??

buy a new router if you don't want to reset that unit and upset your dad as a result.
again, it was about your own whining that brought this about.
catch-22.

can i just plug in a new router to the cable point without any additional config ? and the router's settings should remain intact as long as its got power right ? was considering buying the dlink dir-655 or sth, heard alot of good things about it...

can't tell, the software just shows the strength for one, which is 3/5 bars...

TS, for your case use netstumbler to check ur ssid is under which channel, and connect to that channel only(i doubt there are more linksys, and your's are using ch6)

it may be plausible, however, the adapter will auto roam other networks uncontrollably from time to time.

Why must you be so insistant on using the default SSID...? There is unlikely any excuse that you failed to connect to any of the 3 for configuration.
Do yourself a favour, save yourself (and others here) a lot of trouble, change the SSID. Use wired for the setup. If you're saying all are on wireless, then please unplug the router and bring it near to any PC (if all are PCs). Having a notebook would save the trouble already though.

maybe son and father need heart to heart talk. i thnk this solution will work and is better for family, character and harmony at home in the long run.

Ok, I browsed through it earlier, and didn't quite register that point.

Agree.
If the setup is not done correctly, it's a disaster to everyone in the family.
If your dad is not around, then try as much to inform him first, to do a hard reset on your own with a temporary password, reconfigure SSID and make sure at least WEP is set, and let your dad reset the password when he's available.

no, he removed the WPA, now its a open connection ie don't need a WEP/WPA password to connect. he changed the login for the settings page because he doesn't want me to set port forwarding for utorrent lol. its not an issue at night when those other 2 people turn off their routers, but in the morning the connection keeps alternating between channel 6 (mine) and channel 11 (dunno who it belongs to)
@askh52: i thought netstumbler can only be used to see what networks are around ?? you mean you can use it to connect to those APs as well ? how ? i tried double clicking and nothing happens...
@phuque99: i'm getting my own ADSL line in 3 months when my sch starts, i just have to tahan until then lol. still an improvement from last time when it was passworded.
btw forgot to mention, company is paying for the line, probably good enough reason for him to not let me abuse it with utorrent lol.

i think you still need a heart to heart talk with your father, in case there is any misunderstanding about "router security" here. it seems a big contradiction not to let you do your piracy but leaving the router wide open for others to leech on.

this is not about technology. this is about communication.

maybe can talk to father about the following. don't think there's any real technical solution here.

That's totally fine if he wants control, but things should still be set right first.
No wireless password is not advisable definitely. Any reason why he wants to let all neighbours within the range leech into the network?
Again, you'll have to communicate with him on the need to change the SSID, but it seems you're avoiding this totally.
There's no more help that we can provide from how I look at it, except phuque99's last advice...

@phuque99: i don't know what kind of point you're trying to put forth but far from being helpful, its annoying. this is a purely technical question and if i wanted advice on my relationship between me and my father, i would have stated that explicitly in my first post in this thread. i already mentioned that its a corporate line so i'm not complaining about the torrenting bit. and as many of you should know, there's a multitude of ways to obtain files from the interwebs that doesn't run along p2p networks. and from my room, there are 14 unsecured networks, nobody's going to bother using mine, seeing how hard it is to connect to it in the first place.
@pokemon: communicate with him ? he comes back once a month, for two days before going back to the US again. as much as it tempts me, i don't wish to spend those 2 days in a heated discussion on why i should have access to the router setup page. you can call it avoiding the question, but i prefer peace in the kingdom over getting what i want. besides 3 more months and i won't even have to bother anymore so what's the point ?
to the rest of you with helpful replies, thanks! :D
anyway, i'm sharing the connection with my dell laptop via intel's PROSET utility in the morning-afternoon, works fine at night with a direct connection when the other 2 routers are off.
