hi guys,
some people have said that using a VPN will increase BT speed as ISPs cannot throttle ur BT traffic anymore. however, starhub has been known to have slow speeds when connecting to US servers.
if i use a VPN service based in US, willl it be less effective compared to using a local VPN since the connection to the US VPN will be slow?
thanks in advance!

VPNs do not increase speed in certain cases, it's more of a security protection than anything else.
I have a preference for virtual private server (VPS) instead of VPN as a VPN acts as a proxy while a VPS acts as a harddisk on the internet but will obviously be more expensive.
As long as you head out of singapore, you will be bottlenecked by submarine cable capacity.
Assuming if you got a starhub 30Mbps line, and you are downloading a popular torrent (hundreds of peers and seeds) using the VPS which say, max 1Mbps upload / download. Then, it's quite useless unless you want to stay anonymous.
VPS/VPN is used for 3 things.
1. grabbing less well seeded/popular torrents
2. protecting your identity online (as long as your VPS is hosted somewhere outside jurdisdiction of interpol, countries like the netherlands come into mind)
3. using the static IP for rapidshare and MU.
If you're requirements don't fall into the above, then it's not useful.
As for location of the VPS/VPN, you will get better speeds using a local VPN / VPS service as there is no chokepoint, but beware you are open to legal ramifications.
