I am still using the above and paying S$120/mth.

I am considering whether to cancel this plan and signing up for the Singnet BB xx Mbps plan instead.

Can you guys help me to weigh the pros and cons?

Magix ATM Unlimited 2.5Mbps @S$120/mth discounted (instead of usual S$211/mth)

Pro 1) On ATM backbone infrastructure. Lowest ping rates for local and overseas. Good for playing games on the internet and other business apps that require good latency (ping) rates.

Pro 2) Fixed IP address. What are the advantages of a fixed IP address? Setting up a web server? Anyone care to expound on this?

Pro 3)

Con 1) Comparatively low bandwidth. Download from overseas can sustain around 300KB/s only.

Con 2)

Singnet BroadBand Unlimited 10 Mbps @S$47/mth

Pro 1) Heard more stable than Starhub MaxOnline. Less dis-connections.

Pro 2) Better ping rates than Starhub (but not as good as Magix ATM?)

Pro 3) Less interfering of ports to block BT downloading

Con 1)

Does this service have fixed IP or is it variable assigned?

Starhub MaxOnline Ultimate Unlimited 100Mbps @S$86/mth

Pro 1) Really big bandwidth (really true?)

I heard Starhub actually blocks/throttles some ports to prevent BT downloading. If I dun use BT, but use rapidshare and other such services...I should be okay?

Con1 ) Really bad ping rates. Cannot play games properly. But this does not affect if I use this Starhub purely for downloading crap from internet??

Con2) No fixed IP right?

Can bros here pls help to update me anything else I may have left out....it has been very long time since I kept up to date with the BB plans in Singapore...thankS!!! :s22:

Pros of SingTel Magix Premiumsurf:

1. The only true 'Always-On' residential broadband.

SingNet BB uses PPP to authenticate, thus PPP sessions can drop off. MaxOnline uses mac address to obtain ip address lease via DHCP. IP Address lease will expire and will auto-renew lease but on some occasions, lease fails and take awhile to successful lease ip address, thus disruption to existing connectivities/sessions such as video conference, ip telephony, etc.

2. The only residential broadband with true 'assigned' static ip address.

All other residential broadbands use DHCP to obtain ip address lease.

3. Best network latency of residential broadbands.

4. Best stability & reliability of residential broadbands.

That's after all the max of what 2.5Mbps can achieve. At least, the 2.5Mbps speed is for both local and overseas. Don't be surprise if sometimes SingNet BB or MaxOnline cannot even achieve 2.5Mbps for the same site to download (compared side by side with Magix).

Nope. SingNet BB plans are all PPP-based, and leases ip address upon successful authentication.

RapidShare/MegaUpload/etc all the same... free use subjected to download restrictions thus same as SingNet or Magix, most of the time cannot download anything as it will state ip already downloading or download limit reached.

This is due to mandatory regulation that all residential broadbands must go through proxies (be it static or transparent). Thus, most of these download services/sites detect the proxies ip address and thus, rate limit it.

Under most circumstances, you will not obtain 100Mbps download speed be it local or overseas. Only with multi-parts/multi-connections downloading (if the hosting server supports too) would high speed downloading be achievable.

Thanks for the quick reply.

As for Rapidshare and other such services, I actually meant subscribing to their paid service, some of which limits download to 10GB per day. What I mean is if I have subscribed to say Rapidshare and they give me 10GB per day...can I use all of StarHub's 100Mbps b/w to download several files at the same time?

Am I right to say StarHub 100Mbps is the best for downloading multiple files from paid RapidShare service?

All:

I think I will keep my Magix ATM for the time being and sign up for both Singnet BB 10Mbps and StarHub 100Mbps plans for testing out. I will use 3x Access Points and name them accordingly. I guess I need to experiment with both services for myself to see.

Question:

The SpeedTouch modem given to me by Singtel for my Magix ATM overheats and disconnects quite often....

Is there any very good and reliable modem recommended for use with Magix ATM?

Don't tell me to use Cisco coz even that has failed me after 3-4 years. Or am I unlucky? What is the latest Cisco router? I used to use a Cisco 827..

Another question: What modem should I use with StarHub? Any from Linksys? And will Wireless-G or Wireless-N be able to satisfy the 100Mbps speed? :s11:

Lol, I remebered using magix in 1998, then using the piece of sh*t ADSL 1000 modem and the what-the-f miniport 25 LAN card.

Magix is good if you need rock solid rellability for office work. But otherwise, unsuitable for home use, you're better off benefitting from singnet ADSL or MOL

I am 11-year loyal and emotional customer.

NB: I was given a starter kit containing the Efficient Networks 3010 PCI card together with the big gray Alcatel 1000 modem. There was also a small plastic box (orange grey and white) that was supposed to be a splitter. With that I did not have to install any microfilter, but it required a re-wiring of my house lines.

Now I moved to a new house already...and at the new home... I no longer use the Alcatel 1000 modem and splitter. I am using an f-ing unreliable SpeedTouch modem. My 827 busted long time ago. Bought a Linksys ADSL 2+ modem 2 or 3 years ago, didnt use...now want to use ...discontd liaoz.....Zzzzz :o

I will not unsubscribe unless they close down Magix..:s13:

Using a 10mbps and Magix side by side on the same PC, In WOW, latency is 50-70ms lower for Magix.

Actually magix is ard 3.5mbps download,

Using the speedstream 5100 modem

Not an ATM card instead? Nowadays all the intermediate steps the modem can handle already, so its 1 LAN output which ur PC can directly use.

You must be on interleaved mode instead ?

hmm in my 5100 the download speed is 3488000, but of coz due to overheads, the actual speed is lower. My max speed is around 300kb/s which is ard 2.5mbps

I have been using Cisco router (previously SpeedTouch 585) for at least 3-4 years now. Working fine, no disconnection problem, no overheat.

SpeedTouch 585? It's ok leh... Just need to set it upright instead of lying flat. It served me well (and still functional) for years. Upgrade to Cisco coz I needed true VLAN capabilities and other functions.

Same here... Only way that I will move is when FTTH is launched and offers good pricing to Magix users to attract us over. But FTTH is DHCP too. :(

No need SNBB ADSL to be on interleave to be slower than Magix.

Magix itself has priority route + less hops = better latency, thus I am not the least surprise that his WOW is 50-70ms better on Magix than on SNBB ADSL.

Furthermore, given his location, confirm his Magix is super-duper grade one (super less hop and prioritized)...

liangtam

more hops needlessly affect overall latency mah
6-8ms base latency on SNBB is actually comparable to Magix, route different likely.

TS, after i have try pacific ADSL, maxonline, M1 bbom and singtel BBOM... i miss the Singtel magix... the fix ip is so good... although the 300kBps looks slow... but the speed is very stable.... if they still open for that option.... i will still thinking of going back to singtel magix!!!

like last evening, i use starhub 2MB, i get avg speed of 10-20kBps for my torrent... then i plug in my singtel BBOM 1 Mb, and i get 50-70kBps... it is on the same PC without using router... u can easily see the the speed that they claim is not really usful... but of cos... from 11pm to 7am Starhub is able to give 50-70 kbps also... but at this hour, my 1Mb BBOM get give 100kbps and 2MB BBOM can get 200kbps with the same torrent....

the choice is yours...

it is open, however, no more $120 price for you.
BTW, you CAN'T compare it with mobilebb service

yes, mobile BB should be at disadvanage compare to Starhub maxonline(wire hard to compare with wireless).... but yet... 1Mb BBOM perform much better than 2Mb maxonline... u said neh??:s22:
