Check if the drive (likely C) is low on or out of space.

If so, clear all those unnecessary files and try logging in again.

Did you saw a brief message after you login to the account with something like "loading you personnal setting"?

If yes, the system is infected with virus/worm which hijacked the system and overwrite the profile.

Try to scan your pc first if got any infected...If you use system restore,your system wwill get back to previous setting.You can try to repair your vista using the CD.

Y so fast point to virus? if the original profile got error, windows simply assigns a temp profile to the user. He can recreated another acc and copy out all the files from the original acc.
