What windows is your laptop using? Are you able to detect your wireless network from your laptop? Have you configure your wireless router?

So many 'nows', don't know when is when..........

Are you still using USB connection to the PC? Did you ensure that the connection from the modem is to the router's WAN port?

You haven't answered my question regarding the WAN port. Make sure you check it out. With both the router and modem switched off, reconnect the network cables to the correct port.

Please go through the manual on how to go about setting up. All the info you need is in there.

Make sure you setup at least WPA-PSK in the Security Options, and I'd suggest you change the SSID from the default NETGEAR to something unique.
