r u just trying to host a personal site or a commercial site....?

if personal, it's easy. (I am doing that now :D)

just need to install either IIS or apache on the particular machine (if using windows, linux, apache only).

Setup any home page u want...den open up ur firewall and direct port 80 to that host.

Next you will need to get a domain name. If cheapskate, go for those cjb.net free one or just buy one from net. Then tie down ur internet ip to that domain name. Download any of those DNS autoupdater so that if ur router reboot, the ip address can be change on your Domain name easily.

If u r planning to do commercial hosting, take note that bandwidth is a consideration. A server based OS is probably more optimal as do your firewall/router. You will need to buy a static ip and also server space/rack too since i dun suppose u wanna put @ home and switch on ur own aircon LOL...

It's easy if u know ur stuff. But can be consider tedious if u dun even know how to host a personal site in the first place. Start with a personal site first.

hi potato, sorry for using ur thread to ask question as i have similar doubts too
.lordlad0 is there a way to calculate how much bandwidth is required to cater for x numbers of users?
for example 40gb of bandwidth can cater for hw many user at a time?

Secondly, what is the differenece between normal web hosting, dedicated server, and VPS?

Lastly, do you have any good reliable web hosting service u can recommend? preferably windows based server.

thanks

it's quite difficult to calculate, u can only estimate. It will depends on your page count/size. However, do take note that ur ISP may/will terminate ur contract if u r trying to host a commercial website with lotsa traffic using only a home connection.

normal web host = just server to host ur web. barebone, no special scripts/tools for u

dedicate server = the entire server for u mean more space, u can remote to the server to install whatever scripting tools u want i presume.

VPS = virtual private server, a subset of dedicated, means to 'cut' a part of the server to create another separate server, so u dun have to buy another physical machine

Lastly, u need to host? I have lobang. if u really serious, pm me.

40Gb/GB bandwidth is a chunk of bandwidth and it does not justify the speed that u need. i guess your question is how much speed is enough for x number of users. so just to give you a rough idea, 1Mbps will give you a maximum 320GB of data transfer in single way, that is if at all times, 1Mbps is used up by your users.

Here's a link for you to help you understand better.
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/How_many_GB_does_1_Mbps_equal

So, lets say, your website has 128KB to load and you are on a 1Mbps connection. The bottleneck will be 1 user loading your website per second since 1Mbps/8(bits to byte)=128KBps

For second question, i am very sure you can google and it will feed you with many professional answers. Main difference is the price and how dedicated you need for your website. If you prefer to have the whole server to yourself, you pay a higher price for the dedicated resources, unlike normal shared hosting.

For last question, pm me if you need recommendation.

Hey there,

Refer to this website to know almost everything about webhosting that a 'begineer' should know about. http://www.w3schools.com/hosting/default.asp

It has everything ranging from space issues to the questions that u asked.. shared webhosting etc.

Anyway, you could get a free webhost online. Do google 'free webhost' and a list pops out. However, i strongly suggest you NOT to use free webhosts for stuff that has to be 24/7 online. Reason being, almost all free webhosts do not guarantee that as its free. However, from my experience, most do have about 95% uptime. The advantage i feel is that you get a free 'subdomain' on some free webhosts. http://xxx.freewebhost.com (xxx is ur name)
