No enthusiast will configure a high amount of RAM when customising a high-end laptop. They do after-market upgrades which is cheaper.
Gateway can downgrade to XP pro a not?
There's no such thing as whether X brand can downgrade to Windows XP or not.
There are 2 methods of downgrading:
1. Through a Vista license
2. Through a separate XP license
For the first, you need a Vista Business/Ultimate license. Going by this method you must uninstall Vista before installing XP. You need to have a XP license for the installation before calling Microsoft to activate your Vista license on it.
For the second, you simply get a XP license which is not used by other computers. If you possess a XP machine you can uninstall Windows XP before using the license. This is because one license can only be used for one machine.
And before you get excited, there's still the drivers. Some manufacturers offer drivers on their website, some don't. For experienced users all it takes is just an hour or two of using Google to search for the drivers (whether official or 3rd-party) and playing around to make it work.

upgrading RAMs when configuring laptop is quite silly...
some charge even twice from what you can get on the market..
of course not to mention that you can even get better RAMs on your own preference with cheaper price :D

You could also consider M1530 and M1730 Dell XPS Series or a Sager laptop.
