Anyone here frequently make their own cat5 cables?
I'm buying a RJ45 cripping tool, would like to know if buying an expensive cripping tool help to make better ethernet cable with good connections?
I have made some ethernet cables last time with a cheapo tool and always there will be some bad ones.. ended up with network problem due to poor cripping.. it could be my poor technique but a better tool helps right?
Hope to hear some opinion.
Thanks!

Nope, the cripping tool has only 1 function, to move the lever down so that the rubber insulation portion of the cable will be exposed. Its secondary function to obviously to tighten the cable.
Chances is that you :
- got the colour code wrong;
- did not push the cable till the tip end of the connector before your cramp it.
Must as well spend < $50 to get those made-in-china cable tester. It check the above 2 issues and show you results via its LED.

No problem with the colour code. I normally double check after inserting the cables into the jack and before crimping. But somehow there are a pin or two with poor contact... :( and then have to cut away and redo...
There are also times when I got it right the very first time..

Probably.. sometime. But most of the time I'm quite sure the force applied is sufficient.
When some of the LEDs on the tester didn't light up, I re-crimp the connectors again.. of course I apply more force. But still sometime it helps but sometime not and I have to cut away the RJ45 and re-do another one.. :s22:

Crimpling too hard is not adviseable too right? As a result the RJ45 could be quite lose when insert into a switch or router.

TS, source for good RJ45 connector instead, and of course the quality of the UTP cable also play a part. My crimpling tool cost only $20 plus and have served me well for many years.

Lose no good meh? later hard until the thing stuck inside.
BTW, you using a plastic crimper? If yes, time to change.

Good pointers. Do you buy RJ connectors in bulk? How much is one connector now?
Is Simlim tower or SLS a good place to buy connectors?

Correction guys. It's crimp or crimping, not crippling, cripping nor crimpling.
PS: This is just serving as an alert to some readers, in case they learn and continue using the wrong stuffs.

Err.. plastic? The handle is plastic 'insulated'. Made in taiwan. Feel like its kinda of flawed somewhere.. maybe really me crimping skill suck. Cannot swim and blame it on swimming trunk. :s13:

In bulk I assumed you're talking about > 100pcs, no, I purchase enough for my own usage. Price is about the same in both places.
I have not come across RJ45 connector selling for 5cts/pc, even for 100pcs the price is like 20cts/pc.

My personal experience is, u must make sure u get all the cables to be flush all the way to the end of the connector for best results. A little off is ok, though I will try to flush them all to the end.
Keep cutting those cables that are longer than the other cables so that when they enter the connector they will reach the end.
Finally, when clamping down, do make sure u clamp until the metal piece is at the same level or lower than the plastic.

view from the sides of the plug to make sure the 2 outermost wires are fully in, cos they ned to be slightly longer than those in the middle due to the layout. also make sure the plug is clamp down on the outer insulation..not on the multi colour inner wires.
