I presume this is Singtel. And you have a speedtouch modem.

If this is true (should be, as you describe as need phoneline.) you should need to set the modem into bridge mode (i did it using telnet), and enter your singtel BB user and password into router config page (if linksys 192.168.1.1 via a LAN cable). Not sure about the MIO 1 though.

And set on your router to PPPoe.

If on starhub (i dont think so, IIRC starhub uses the TV cable thing cant remember what issit called.) just on your router and modem, plug the ethernet cable into the router internet port, then route from there.

Hope it helps.

A router's job is to split the bandwidth for other computers to use. If you only have one computer and do not require wireless access(which your current modem might not have), your current modem would be enough for you.

Most, if not all modems you can find in SLS are modem/routers, which is, a modem and router combined together. There are also pure routers available. Both generally function the same; it's just that one has a built in modem while the other doesn't.

As for price, a cheap modem/router would be okay for most general users. However, if you want something extra, like Draft N, or QoS etc, you'd need to pay more, which might be in the range of $100 - $270. However, you need to be sure that your ISP would be able to support your modem or modem/router.

Anyway, you should post this in the networking section, (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/forumdisplay.php?f=4). The guys there would be able to explain better then i do lol

I believe your current set-up is:

Phone jack
Modem
PC

And you want to set it up as

Phone jack
Modem
Router ------- PC/laptop (if you have)
PC

A router essentially allows you to use (i.e. share) oneInternet connection (WAN) across a few of your PCs (LAN). To do the second set-up, you would generally need to:

a) Set the modem to run in bridge mode. That means the modem just connects to the Internet provider.
b) Set your router in PPPoe. I like to think of this as setting up your router to do the login (ID/password) rather than use the modem do the login.

As indicated by the previous poster, some routers have a built-in modem, so you can effectively configure the modem/router at the same time.
