Ending the more or less long wait, Samsung Electronics has now officially introduced its Spinpoint F3 series hard drives which makes use of 500GB platters. Coming in 500GB and 1TB capacities, the 3.5-inch drives work at 7200 RPM, have 16 and 32MB of cache, respectively, and boast a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface.

"Our customers require not only additional capacity but also high performance for their server and desktop storage systems, while promoting a green environment," said Choel-Hee Lee, vice president of marketing, Storage Systems Division, Samsung Electronics. "The massive capacity-per-platter and high-performance features of the new Spinpoint F3 make it an attractive solution for driving the growth of high-density storage."

The new spinners also feature SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies for quiet operation, are RoHS compliant, and support Native Command Queuing. The 500GB Spinpoint F3 is the first to hit stores at 46 Euro, while the 1TB model is expected to start shipping in August and go for about 69 Euro.

seems like most major players only target 1tb @ 500/p instead going all the way to 2tb

quite disappointed with so little choice.

Samsung F3 500GB's in RAID0 200GB Array, quick benchies
So I grabbed a couple of these to replace the single, VERY slow 400GB drive I was using previously as my system drive. I was too impatient to install an OS and run benchies on a single drive, full drive, etc. But I can at least give people an idea of how these run in my setup.

Q9550 - Lapped - 4012Mhz
Gigabyte GA-P45-UD3P
2x 2GB Gskill DDR2-1000
2 x 500GB Samsung F3 - RAID 0

I have a 200GB RAID 0 array for the system and then the rest RAIDed for extra storage. I know this doesn't really give you guys a perfect idea of how a single drive performs, but it's all I have

With a spindle speed of 7,200RPM, two 500GB platters and 32MB of cache, the Spinpoint F3 is the latest performance hard disk drive from Samsung, replacing the much loved Spinpoint F1.

I see that the F1 HDDs are sold in some shops in SLS. Is the F1 good enough for storage purposes?

of course!

the F1 1TB 3-platter design is quite popular and I have one too.

in terms of F1 vs F3 benchmarks, I don't see much difference in the results (although real-world results may be different) but the F3 is more quiet because of its 2-platter design and it has a higher areal density.

Comgateway is the best if you combine with other people/are ordering a number of items. First kg US$15, every subsequent kg is US$4.5. No freight clearance time, no minimum charge per parcel.

But is VC safe? Neve heard of VC before. And what is the procedure? Because when I click on the link it's a form only. So do they buy for us or do we purchase ourself? And what is VC Fuelcard No? Don't even hv this Fuelcard No. I noticed that we have to apply for Giro for this FuelCard. Don't feel at ease providing bank info and on Giro.
