Which will fare better in terms of stability when used as a modem only?

I have read of the 2wire dropping connections under heavy load but will that happen if it's only functioning as a modem?

I'm deciding between the both of them to connect to the dir 655.

The 2wire does NOT drop connection during heavy load. It does however, not accept new connection when the NAT table is full.
