View Full Version : Good ADSL2+ modem

I used to be on Singnet 6Mbps, and my old Speedstream modem has served me well. Two months back, I elected to move to the faster 10Mbps . Since then, I have been having frequent disconnect. I got a new Speedtouch modem that is ADSL2+ compliant, and it didn't help. I got Singnet 'engineers' to come down, not once, not twice but three times to check my line. In all instances, the line shows good SNR. The last 'engineer' claimed that my modem is faulty. Never mind that it is a new modem. I bought a Zyxel modem. And it is still giving me problem.

I remember when I was first on 6Mbps, I had similar disconnect problems. I complained a few times, and the problem mysteriously disappeared. Now, they claim it is my modem. Okay. I will get a new modem, but I am not sure if it will help.

The disconnect is due to the DSL signal dropping. The modem (both models)'s DSL light just disappear, and then try to resync. Sometimes, the resync works, but from my router/firewall log (I have a Zywall 5), I don't get an IP address on the WAN side, and I have to switch off and on the modem (the router will re-establish connection). On good days, the re-establishment and resynicing works i.e. my WAN manages to get an IP address from Singnet's DNS. The thing is, all this disconnecting is wreaking havoc to my secured connections like Internet Banking, office email etc.

So what is a good ADSL2+ modem? The last 'engineer' claims that the 2wire modem is the best (not sure which one he is referring to: 2701HG-E, 2701HGV or 2701HGV-E, but it is the one that is used with Mio). But 2wire does not sell in the market (not in SLS anyway). I don't need any router/wireless function (I have Zywall, DIR-655 and Buffalo WRZ-HP-300), but if the modem bit is good, I will just use the modem part only (that is for any modem-plus-router-plus wireless model).

Thanks.

I already changed from Speedstream to Speedtouch 536, and then to Zyxel.

That's what I keep telling them to check their server site. First engineer said my phone line connection outside my house was loose (I have the potential for 3 lines to the house, but I only use one, so loose or not, I never have any problem with 6Mbps plan).

So how to I post my line stats? The modem is in bridge mode. Do I have to put it back to router mode and access the modem to look at the line stats?

So no better modem thant the 536(v6)? Zyxel 660RU-T1 is the other model that I have. Maybe I should try to flash the firmware.

Being the Karang Guni Man, I also have Avaya, Cisco, SMC, Linksys WRT54SRX and Netgear. You wanna buy them? :D

How do you set your speedtouch 536 to bridge mode ? I am trying but don't seem to be able to do that.

it is not modem issue, it is the phone line, how many phone sockets you have in your house, try to disconnect sockects from other rooms and leave only the main socket.

problem will be solved.
