I bought a cheap mini bluetooth dongle for my pc, 2.0 with EDR and my router is just next to my pc.

I plugged the dongle at the back of my pc and it couldn't detect/connect to my mobile phone about 0.5m away and couldn't believe the range is so short. I had to virtually place my phone very near to it (15-20cm?) then I can get it to work. Then I was thinking wifi and bluetooth both use the 2.4Ghz spectrum and don't know if the router was causing interference or not.

I turned off my router and then tried using the bluetooth again, no difference so I don't think it has anything to do with the wifi signal? Anyone have problem with the range when using bluetooth dongle? Or is the cheap dongle I bought piece of crap? :(

dont know if its of help, but:

laptop with in-built BT and WIFI can run concurrently and transfer within 2M from HP to laptop

I would replace the BT dongle and see how first ;)

I've laptop too and yeh no problems with both BT and Wifi concurrently.

Though to be honest the components are just below the keyboard right. So usually a person will place the phone just next to it or holding it in front of him facing the screen when say transferring files. So the range quite near, seldom had to transfer files while the phone is further so I never really tried since no need to.

But for normal PC set up, monitor and keyboard in front, CPU beside with the USB ports behind the case. Plus maybe modem, router, speakers in between monitor and CPU... can result in longer distance between phone and dongle. I read that bluetooth don't need line of sight so shouldn't matter, if placed phone next to keyboard should still be within range considering the bluetooth range is rated up to 100m? Funny...
