Accidentally reformat my external harddisk

When reinstalling XP, I didn't realise my external drive was still plugged in and I chose the quick format option. Now when i plug into my laptop i realised everything is gone from photos, game installers, music, movies etc all gone. Now inside there left with all the system files from the windows XP installation. Really hope to recover the previous files i have
