View Full Version : Does Gigabit Lan make a difference for file transfers between 2 pc?

When I was doing file transfers between 2 PCs using wired lan (100Mbps), I realized that the network utilization will only be around 70~80 percent. So if I upgrade all my devices to support Gigabit network, will my file transfers be much faster? In this case, is the speed limited by the network or the rate in which the files are being written to the destinatiion harddisk? In other words, where's the bottleneck, network or harddisk?

Your 100Mbps Network is the bottleneck bah, imo.
100Mbps -> 12.5MB/s.

when u copy files from 1 hdd to another hdd on the same computer, whats the maximum transfer rate u can achieve ?

50MB/s or 80MB/s ? (around there mayb)

but your network only allows 12.5MB/s of data to pass thru.
well..on paper, real world shld be lower.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers. :s13:

it only shows 70-80% because of network overhead. all modern hard drives are definitely faster than 100 (12.5MB/s) mbps.

So does that mean that I can connect the 2 PCs (with integrated 1Gb lan) using a crossed cable and achieve a much higher transfer speed?

Yes you will. This would be best vs direct disk to disk transfer.
