View Full Version : Setting up router

I need to link both my laptop and PC to the same modem, so I got a router and connect as follows:
-Modem connect to router (WAN port)
-PC connect to router (LAN port #1)
-Laptop connect to router (LAN port #2)
The thing is, when I try to load websites, there's always a error (due to no connection).
Hardware wise, I'm very sure everything is connected properly.
I went to the router's setup page (that http://192.168.1.1 thing) and there's a ton of rocket-science fields I need to fill up?
Like Host domain, host name, MAC address and all that rot (I don't have CCNA or Masters in Computer Science).
Do you guys encountered the same problem? I wonder if I need to ask StarHub for all these data, because there's a lot.
I also tried to find out the details of my network by running ipconfig in the Start > Run menu but the DOS window open and closed automatically in 1 second. :(
Pls advise. I also wonder if anyone here provides router setup service, then maybe we can discuss.
Thanks!

Don't worry bro, setting up internet access doesn't require CCNA or Comp Sci degree :)
Most routers are by default configured to work out-of-the-box.
Just the fact that you could access your router's setup webpage tells us that the router is correctly setup to serve out IP addresses to it's connected PCs/laptops. It's normal that the DOS windows close immediately when you type ipconfig into Start > Run. What you should have done is type "cmd" at Start > Run, after which the DOS windows pops up and then type "ipconfig".
I think the main problem is that your router don't seem to be getting a working IP address from your internet service provider's network. You can check a few things:
1) In your router's setup webpage, look around for any setup information regarding DHCP. DHCP from the router's perspective is where it gets an IP address from your ISP (e.g. Singnet, Starhub, M1). You should not need to manually input anything at all. Guys who use ADSL could chip in here, I've been using SH and M1.
2) Call up your ISP's help desk and ask them what sort of DHCP IP address should you expect to get. E.g. starting with 119.... or 201... It'll give you a better idea cos' then you can double check against what you see on your router's setup information.
3) Try to connect your laptop or PC directly with the modem and see if it works.
4) Lastly, does your ISP need you to provide any login information like user id & password? Starhub cable doesn't need, M1 fixed broadband needs, not sure of Singtel's ADSL.
Hope this helps.

Turn off both device
Turn on router and wait a minute
Turn on modem

Thanks a lot, ngailoon and liangtam!

No, i'm using SH MaxOnline (the 8 Mbps one), never need to input id or password.
I'll try again tonight to check the DHCP setting and see what happens.

Yes you re on the right track correct. for starhub U dun nid the key in any ID.
Some of SNBB old type of modem like st536 U nid to key in ID unless U flash it like mine.
Then dun nid to key in anything.
For Starhub I thought the DHCP is not assigning any IP address , that why U cannot surf net.
Ive ever encountered B4. Goto router page & enable the DHCP.
If dub know how to do it. RESET your router to default. OKay liao. TADA

Thanks a lot, everyone! My utmost gratitude! It is with everyone's help that I managed to setup my router effortlessly!
One more question: Is there a way to surf the web on my netbook without connecting to the router? (that's what i bought wireless router for).
I've tried unplugging the ethernet cable from the netbook and it doesn't work anymore; must connect to router by wire then can.
Do I need to change anything? On my router setup page, there's all these fields:
Wireless
MAC Address: 00:90:4B:88:55:F0
Mode: 11b+G (btw, what's this?)
Domain: ETSI
Channel: 6
SSID: diverx
SSID Broadcast: Enabled
Security: Enable
Pls advise!

From the info you just posted, your wireless router should a 802.11G router. This bit of info was revealed by the field "Mode: 11b+G", unless of course, your router is more advance and is a dual band router where it can function as either a 802.11G or as 802.111N. These are essentially different standards of wireless transmission using different frequencies. The pros & cons of which will be another discussion.
For your netbook to connect wirelessly, you'd need to do a few things.
1) Your router currently is set with wireless security turned on. Hence, you'd need to somehow change the security password into something that you know. Pls refer to the user manual for details.
2) That field called "SSID" is know as diverx. "diverx" is essentially the name or identity which your wireless router tells the rest of the world. In order to connect to your router and not anyone else router, you must know this name.
3) You'd need to enable the wireless adapter (i.e. turn it ON). How to do this depends your netbook but it should be fairly simple.
4) Once your netbook's wireless adapter is ON, you can manually try to search for available wireless routers around your area. You can google it on how this is done via your netbook's operating system.
5) Assuming you get through with step 4), you should be able to see a list of wireless routers with different names e.g. 2WIRE..., linksys, and so on. If you can see your router's name "diverx", then you're almost done. Just need to select "diverx" to connet and you'd be prompted for a password (refer to step 1).
6) The last part that could go wrong here would perhaps be the channel setting. Your current channel is set as "6". If your netbook can't find your router's name "diverx" or can find it but somehow can't connect it or even after connection but can't surf web, then you may try to change the channel to something else. I encountered a problem where my netbook couldn't connect it my router and I just changed the channel number to "11" and it works. "11" is a common channel which works most of the time.
Ok bro, you should be all set ;)

Wow, thanks a lot, bro! U truly saved me lots of headaches! :)
I'm gonna try all these tomorrow but got a few questions I'm not sure about:
1) This password....is it the password that is being prompted when I go to the router's setup page? Or is it some other password (ie: password for the router security or something)
2) That SSID I can change to any name I like, as long as I remember it?
3) Sorry for being a noob, but what does the "wireless adapter" for the netbook (mine is a LG netbook) look like? Is it a small piece of device that I attach to the netbook, or is it those huge AC/DC adapters which you plug into socket?
Btw, my router is TrendNet TEW-411BRP+ Wireless AP router.
Thanks! :)

the password when you go to your router setup page is not the same as the password that is used to connect to your wireless network. you are able to configure your own password to access the network in your router setup page. there should be an option for you to choose the type of encryption for your wireless network, such as WEP and WPA. choose WPA if possible because the WEP encryption is not safe at all. most people here can crack it in a very short time.
yes you can choose your own SSID.
the wireless adapter in your netbook is built in like most notebooks. nowadays all netbooks come with built-in wireless adapters already, and by default they are switched on/enabled.
