cost is not a problem . i can get a new ethernet modem . what i am looking for is fexability . i understand that for the compex solution ( Wrong Spelling ? ) i can take the pcmcia card out and maybe next time replace with a G wireless card ? Possible ?

What about the I-connect ? can i pull out the wireless portion part as in the compex solution as well ?

if i change to max on line next time round can i still use the i connect to connect to the max one line modem ?

if you recommend the compex solution what ethernet modem or can i use those ethernet modem router with the compex wireless router ?

it is technically possible to implement 11G system on the Compex NP16A router by upgrading the firmware and changing the wireless card. but that is all depending on Compex, whether it makes any business sense to do it.

the same can not be done for I-connect system.

both the Compex NP16A and the I-connect AP-800 can be used for Maxonline too.

for both system, you just need an ADSL ethernet modem like the Aztech DSL305E at around $90, no need of another router.

to me use of WEP is good enough to secure a home wireless network.

Hi Dan,

Im thinking of upgrading my USB to ethernet modem thru singnet. Do u know what kinda of ethernet they offering and which one should I get from them? I would like to install a NIC to my pc and get those wireless stuff separately instead of getting the all in one AP-880. Some how afraid the all in one fail me and I end up have to buy those hardware all over again... Pls advise me again... :)

if you are eligible for the $38 top-up, get the Alcatel Speedtouch Home.

if not can consider buying the Aztech DSL305E at $90.

Hello Dan... I have a Magix Supersurf 512k connection and recently acquired a free MOL1500 connection.

I'm using an Efficient 5660 and Motorola 5100i modem respectively, both on Ethernet.

Issit possible to pool both connections together?

My 2 PCs using a connection each are now hooked up together via a cross cable in a LAN. I'm thinking of getting a Compex SKW11 and passing the USB client to my father for his PC in the next room. The router will be in my room with my 2 PCs connected via Ethernet.

Issit a good choice? And again, can I pool the connections together? I don't quite understand the PARALLEL BROADBAND thingy.

Thanx!

you will need 2 NP16A (or the cheaper NP15 wired router) for the 2 connections you have. the 2 router gang together and provide load balancing for all the clients connected, including the wireless clients.

Just configuring the routing table will do the job?

I have already bought it 2 days ago from Superpet. :D

Works very well.

Currently connected via wired to the 2 PCs in my study.
My father's PC in his study is connected via the wireless USB. Very good signal. When my mom's new Pavilion arrives for her office, I'll get another USB adaptor for her.

I like the big antenna's magnetic base. Don't have to worry about balance.

Thanx for the recommendation!

Hi,

No. NP16 or NP16A is not designed to be upgradable to 802.11g. 802.11g needs faster hardware i/f
We don't think anyone would want to pay more to have the faster hardware in and 802.11b can't take advantage for that time before it is upgrade to 802.11g

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hi WirelessDan,

I have a IBM X31 laptop with an Integrated Cisco Wireless Lan and is having quite a bit of problem with the new linksys BEFW11S4 router that I have bought.

There's no problem connecting to Starhub and Singtel hotspot using my laptop, and I have even tried it on a Compex AP with only a slight problem.

1) My laptop can only connect to compex only when the AP is set to Channel 6.

2) As for this linksys AP, I have managed to get an IP address from the AP using DHCP server. But was unable to ping the AP/gateway. Hence unable to get connected to the network. Everything looks normal with the relevant submask, IP address and gateway assigned. To test whether the linksys AP is working, I have even asked my friend to connect to the AP using his laptop and it works on his. I am really lost and dunno what to do ....

Can you pls advise me on this? Thanks.

hi wirelessdan

total noob here..

Scenario --

5 room flat

Cable modem (In living room), 15 - 20 metres away from wired router (in single room). No 'blockage' except for a door.

SMC 4 port router : linked to 3 desktops, 1 laptop

Question --

Want to do away with all the wires from the cable modem --> router ---> all 4 systems

Where can I place the AP and Wireless router ??

What else do I require ??

Given the 20dbm of Fulbond , I'd like to give it a try.

Is it recommanded I use USB lancards instead of the PCI ones ??

Any idea on the total cost (major factor) ?? hehe

From wad I've read, I assume that the cable modem will be linked to the AP (both in living room).

Wireless router in single room.

am i right ?? will it do if a wireless-router-AP is used instead of both devices ???

thanks a million... =D

forget the 802.11B+, there is no such IEEE standard, therefore you can only use devices of the same brand, and for DLink's case, the range performance at 22 Mbps is very poor.

really not sure about integrated Cisco card, but i know that some externa Cisco cards available are not suitable for local use, ie. those for singapore usage can operate from channel 1 to channel 11, but those labelled Air-France can only work from Channel 11 to channel 14.

Linksys wireless router default is channel 6, you may want to check if your integrated (built-in?) Cisco card is indeed 1 that for local usage?

firstly what you need is a wireless AP bridge, instead of wireless router like the Fulbond that you mentioned, as you already have a wired router.

next the Fulbond system you mentioned is very over priced at more than $200, its claim of "the only system that can work for 3 storey house" is totallly untrue. i have tested it against system like the Compex, the performance is not impressive at all, infact the Compex system with range extender antenna has better performance.

there are a few wireless AP bridges which will definitely meet you need that you can consider:

Netgear ME102, $130+ from Fuwell

Compex WP11A+, not available in the shops, but i have some to spare at $100.

you can also consider selling away the SMC router and get a wireless router, can consider the Compex wireless gateway kit SKW811 at $169, which comes with 1 wireless USB adapter. addaitonal USB wireless adapter costs $55 (Compex WLU11A) and PCMCIA adapter $39 (Compex WL11B+)

wireless USB adapter is much better, and cheaper than PCI wireless adapter.

as i said, for your home, most systems will be able to perform well, no point spending more for the Fulbond (which actually not that impressive in term of performance)

Case 1-- Place the wired router + AP bridge in the hall ??
Case 2 - Place wireless gateway kit + modem in the hall ??
It's quite a distance (+/-20m) , issit possible for near 100% signal strength as my bro play online games very often.

Since the Compex WP11A+ doesn't come with a USB adaptor, i might consider the Compex wireless gateway kit. Meaning i need to get 2 extra Compex WLU11A (for a total of 3 desktops) ??

I already have a pc card in my laptop, can i use that to link to the wireless network ??

placing the system in the hall should be fine.

there is no need for 100% signal strength, even at 50% signal strength you probably can still get 5.5 Mbps speed for the wireless link, far exceeding the broadband downlink speed.

if 1 of the 3 desktops is at the hall together with the router, you can connect it by cable, therefore you need only 1 more USB wireless adapter, as the SKW811 kit comes with 1 already.

no problem for the notebook wireless card to work with the system as long as it is IEEE802.11B certified.

latest price for the SKW811 kit is $165 by The Hardware Place, while Fuwell is selling the kit with range extender antenna for $188.

i will prefer to buy the $165 kit as even without the range extender antenna, the Compex system already has performance beating many other wireelss routers. if need to you can always get the antenna at $29 from The Hardware Place later.

wirelessdan, I bought the high gain antenna and attached it to my Compex WLAN router.

I've been using the diagnostic tools of my I-Connect PCMCIA WLAN adapter to monitor the signal strength.

Want to hear something weird?

The signal seems stronger when I unplug the antenna!

Can there be something wrong with my antenna, or am I putting it in the wrong position? What is the best position?

I tried both horizontal and vertical orientation, and different heights.

Hi,

I've just got the Compex NP16A and I'm having problems doing networking on my internal network. I didn't have that problem before i activated the WEP. After doing so i can't even ping to the computers.

Surprisingly, unlike some of the threads here, all my computers were still able to surf the net.... Just not able to ping to each other. :(

Anyone out there has the same problem?

Hey headwax,

I've managed to solve it already. Call Compex and ask for a firmware upgrade. Its around 1MB i think. Tell them the prob and they should email u the file. Works fine for me now.... Jus that now my connection disconnects and connects back sometime... Tell me if u have that prob after upgrading the firmware ya?

I have the EXACT same problem --ie use high gain antenna gets me a lower signal strength. I cant explain/solve it too. ANy 1 has a clue??

Also ..when u guys talk about 50%,70% 100% siganl strength ....u refer to the SNR?? Even with my notebook literally touching the router , i can only about 70Db ....so what percentage signal strength do you call this??? Is 100% 90Db??

Recently I bought a linksys wireless Router - B, but now i find myself cannot play my FIFA 2003 and also alot of program like msn/icq voice chat/web cam conferencing or file transfer can't be use. I know it is due to net translate of ip which means the router took over the ip given by the ISP and DHCP(give) me another IP address to my PC. Which means now i lose my ability of using peer to peer application like PC anywhere/VNC. So anyone know how to solve my problem like configure router. We can discuss openly.

kind of disappointed with the quality control of the WA-HGA-5+ antenna too, from my own experience, the poor quality reject rate is almost 10%, very high.

you may want to check if the antenna main body is screwed tight to the swivel base, i had a few cases that the antenna was not tighten when taken out of box and that definitely caused poor reception.

i have handled 20 over pieces of these antenna, checked them 100% when received them and at have returned at least 3 pieces to Compex due to poor perfromance.

there is no need for any setup at all for the Alcatel Speedtouch, it comes default as a full bridged modem, just connect it to the router and setup the router to dial the modem using PPPoE mode.

disable SSID broadcast does not make much security sense, and infact the SSID can still be sniffed out easily.

and more often than not, SSID-broadcast-disabled stations affect wireless network efficiency due to the beacon management problem.

So you are advising against the Fulbond due to pricing?

Hey guys...
have been thinking of setting up wireless lan for quite some time le.. but since all my comps are located on one level, took time to lay the lines and save the cost instead.

currently all 4 comps are connected to a 10/100mbps switch. internet sharing is done using winxp ICS as one of the stations is on 24/7
i think my switch works fine and don't wish to migrate all my comps to wireless at one time... only one comp will be shifted up two levels. 3 other laptops will be used wirelessly in the living room (1 floor up) from time to time.

location of switch to living room is around 15m. to top level is about 25m. (my house got very high ceilings... xian)

so path loss is about
32.44 + 20 log (2.4) + 20 log (25) +
10+10+6 (2 cement floors and 1 brick wall) +

Try your luck with Compex NP16A and 5dBi gain antenna. Perhaps, you can get enough coverage.

Dan,

Can Compex router SKW811 goes with SCV modem motorala sb4200?

Didnt manage to bring up the link after trying it.

PC >>(2) Compex Router (1-WAN) >> Motorola SB4200

1.) Have used a Straight cable from Router to modem. Have even tried using a Cross. It shall be a Straight.

2.) What is the protocol used in SCV? is it PPPoE?

3.) No is no Login ID or rather Radius authetication used in SCV, thus I have left out FILLS for the USername & Password in the WAN SETUP in the Compex config page.

Is there anything that i missed out?

I do not configure on the Routing nor NAT. But i have doubts on NAT.

Cheers

Hi wirelessdan
I read all the pages of this topic...
tired.. you are good man.

Just a small question.
I just bought the SMC Barricade™ Turbo 2.4GHz 11/22/44Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router with SPI Firewall (SMC2404WBR) plus the PC card at $138.

I need to buy a USB wireless adapter. The Compex WLU11A is good right? SHould have no problems with the SMC router correct?

How is this SMC router that i bought by the way?
I am a network idiot.

Thanks.

Hello All,

I am currently using a Linksys BEFW11S4, 2 x WPC11 and 2 x WUSB11 in a 2 room HDB flat. Even though there is no problem getting 2.8 mbps download speed ( on SCV 3MBPS )from the internet, I cant seem to get any higher internal transfer rate within the LAN. Maximum speed I reached trasferring files from one computer to the other is 380 KBps ( about 3 Mbps ), no where near the 11 Mbps limit for 802.11b. Is this the norm, or do I have to set some other settings to achieve higher internal transfer speed?

Thanks.

bro, am using the same SMC router as you, the reception for me sucks big time, and i have no idea why. Just surfing in the very next room to the router, it gives me Low signal strength and connection keeps dropping intermittently. I don't know whether there's plenty of interference at my place or are most WLan routers the same?

I have thought about switching brands to check if my reception improves. However saw that Top Universal is selling some kind of wireless booster http://sg.hardwarezone.com/priceguide/ check the 25th nov posting by matthew fam. I am going to try it out and hope that it improves my WLan coverage.

Don't even talk about surfing downstairs, i search for my router and can't even find it, although i get about 5 other different routers in my list. heehee, usually i log on to my neighbour's one to surf because i cannot seem to find mine. maybe the walls of my house are too thick or the feng shui not good etc etc. =p

cheers!

Hi, i have a problem here.

I have just set up my wireless router, Linksys BEFW11S4 with my SCV connection. I managed to get one of my PC (connected via Compex WLU11A usb adapter) up and i am surfing with it now! This PC runs on Win XP.

But i encouter problem setting up my Notebook, running Win98 SE. I installed the Compex USB adapter, and everything is fine. I even got the 'LINK' LED lit green. But i just can't get to surf out.

Anyone knows why?

Also i got the netgear MA101 usb adptr. It has this problem of frequent disconenction as in the task bar will show no wireless connection for a few second then it will auto-reconnect.

Although its is true that wireless lan is very convinent, is there any safety precautions to take...since 2.4ghz is still microwave....dnt want to have offsprings with mutant powers....:D

Hi Starushz

Did you upgrade to the latest firmware ? Becoz after upgrading to the latest firmware, i found several new settings, one of them is to "Allow broadcast of Name (SSID)" under the Wireless Setting. Can you try to check that option and see if it helps to solve your frequent disconnection problem.

If you wish to take safety precautions, you can enable the access control by mac address under the Wireless Setting. You may want to set encryption also. One more thing that I did for my router setup is that I limit only 2 ips for the network under the LAN IP Setup, excluding the router's ip, since I have only 2 pcs at my home.

Get the latest firmware for Netgear MR814 here (http://www.netgear.com/support/products/MR814.asp)

To sort of summarize reading of all the threads (my poor eyes really), me having a USB ADSL modem, interested in connecting my PC which is very near the modem + a laptop with already a Cisco wireless card (which is on the 2nd level, next room, which means diagonally up) all I need is, if I want to be on a budget, a USB Wireless Adapter for my PC, which will serve as the internet gateway, which I have to switch on all the time in order to use my laptop, which will be on wireless lan card.

And the best model now is the Compex one, which can I know the price range?

Please correct me if I have any mistake.

And is wireless adapter "powerful" enough since it is quite a distance away, although there isn't much things blocking, apart from the walls.

Thank you so much.

hi , i just bought a new wireless router but yet to buy a wireless adapter for my desktop. The pricing of a normal 54g USB adapter is too expensive ( average $100-$130).

Does all wireless access points have this station mode feature which minitar 802.11b AP offer . I think it not worthwhile to get a USB adapter and rather paid more to get a wireless access point if it has this feature.

Station Mode (AP Client Mode)
By setting this access point into station mode and connecting to a network device’s Ethernet port, it can let a network device that originally only supports wired Ethernet access the wireless LAN easily without changing any configuration.

I'm not familar with these wireless devices.. Access point ( Isn't it the same with AP/router??) A PCMCIA Client is the card which u plug into ur PCI slot on ur motherboard @ the back if I have remembered correctly.. I currently have Netgear MA101 and the reception is horrible. Someone stands in front of it & the reception goes blank. I'm however using linksys wireless router (11mbps version) with 4 10/100 slots. The reason I bought netgear USB wireless was because the linksys USB wireless adapter gave me hell of a problem. Regardless of whether it was online games/dl of stuff or network gaming.. I always had this noticible lag where no transmittion is being made during that period. Also I am unable to stream quicktime videos or any other streaming movies. There will be a few sec pause aft a few sec or it doesn't work & all. I changed to Netgear but with only slighty improved consistancy. But the reception is horrible. I am only 5m away from my room and with the doors open and @ a 45 deg. angle. I have a very good reception. The linksys USB wireless adapter however showed excellent. I wonder if it's bec. of the way linksys sends out the signal or it's due to the USB adapter having problems. Also, Pls enlighten me on how to solve the quicktime trailers issue and the incosistant transmission. Thanks. :)

Currently having wires snaking into the study room and snaking out to the bedroom.

Any recommendation for a wireless setup with a print server?

In the first few pages, you recommended Linksys. The moved on to Compex and SMC. Also mentioned that SMC have to use WinXP utility. A bit  of actual recommendation.:o

if 1 of the 3 desktops is at the hall together with the router, you can connect it by cable, therefore you need only 1 more USB wireless adapter, as the SKW811 kit comes with 1 already.

no problem for the notebook wireless card to work with the system as long as it is IEEE802.11B certified.

latest price for the SKW811 kit is $165 by The Hardware Place, while Fuwell is selling the kit with range extender antenna for $188.

i will prefer to buy the $165 kit as even without the range extender antenna, the Compex system already has performance beating many other wireelss routers. if need to you can always get the antenna at $29 from The Hardware Place later.

Dear Dan and all,

Please give me some advise.

1)I have always thought of going wirless, so me and my brother can use laptop with broaddband without going into my room.(my 2 pc linked up with a linksys swtich sharing a 256k BB with a USB modem connected to 1 main PC). So if my brother needs to check his mail with his laptop he needs to plug in a cable. its not a must, but i have this crazy idea of sharing the internet with him......1 live on the 6th floor and he lives on the 3rd floor in the same block!
You guys think it is possible? with Compex SKW811 kit selling at $138 now.

2)after reading up on some articles and some 'recommendation' from HWZers, i recommended my friend Compex SKW811 kit too.
We managed to configure it and use it, but may i know how do i restrict strangers from detecting my(or i should say my friend's) internet connect, which is a cable conenction. I tried to disable DHCP, but anyone who can assign own IP can still connect and use the connection, i tried assigning ip myself. Its like with DHCP enabled, anyone can share my internet, which i do not want that to happen, makes not sense for security if i go wirless. Any suggestion?
Or how do i set password for my internet netork ionstead? we were able to detect another connection at that time(most probably my friend's neighbor wirless setup or somthing), and was prompt password if needed to connect to that unknow conenction. How can i go about doing the same with Compex SKW811 kit ?

802.11b? Try Compex or 3Com.

If you have enabled WEP, you don't need to key it in everytime you connect. All the computers with network adapters that are correctly configured will be able to connect at all times. MAC filtering can keep any alien adapter from establishing a connection with the router.

i have tried MAc reserve, but that is only to reserve specific IP for that particular MAc address. And there is no mac filteriong in compex Uconfig.

WEP works...thanks alot...so is there a way to make my network invisible????

Sell away your wired router and get a wireless router. The total cost should be about S$130+ for a basic 802.11b package.

How to extend the range, using access point, or is there a "repeater" function as "hub"?

For example, Dlink has this Ranger Extender, does Linksys has equivalent one?

Can I just get 2 of these ranger extender and connect up with my existing Linksys router/switch(non-wireless)?

Yup, you can hook up one AP to the router and set another in repeater mode.

I am not sure whether I can throw away my old Linksys router with 4 port switch, and then replace with this new LINKSYS BEFW11S4 Wireless Router(4-port Switch) SGD88.00?

One more question, how come the Access Point LINKSYS WAP11 Wireless Access Point (Max. 11Mbps) SG$100, it more expensive than router?

How many Access Point I can chain up to extend the range?

OKK77

Yes, you can just sell it off and replace with a wireless router. APs are generally more expensive since more wirelss routers are produced and it brings down the price overall.

Sorry guys but i have a Question...

I currently have a Linksys wireless 4-port router ( 11B ).
but whenever i play online games using wireless it jams for a few seconds every 5 min or so... Guess its coz of the wireless network. Will upgrading to 11G help or juz get a signal booster will do to prevent the suddenly lag of transmittion?

Or is there better ways?

I just subscribed to MOL1500. Connected the cable modem in the living room to the linksys wireless router BEFW11S4.
In my 2 bedrooms about 12-15m away, I have the linksys Wireless adapter WUSB11 connected to 2 computers.
However, the signal strength received is always low(~20%) and the internet speed is very slow.
The computer in the nearer bedroom can get a signal of good to very good provided I move the adapter closer to the door but the internet speed is still slow (downloads abt 20KBps).
In the living room when I use a laptop, my signal is excellent and am able to connect at high speeds.
What can I do to improve the wireless network connection or the internet speed?

There's something strange. I can connect to my neighbour's wireless network. Although the signal strength received is very low, I can connect to the internet at very high speeds (downloads abt 180-200KBps). What's the problem with my own cable access?

hi all,

i've read through 20 pages of this thread and am utterly confused with all the technical terms (i'm quite a computer idiot  )

i want to set up a home wireless network where we can share files and the broadband connection, but not too sure how to go about doing so. I know i need a wireless router, but is there anything else I need?

- 1 PC & 1 notebook on Win XP Home, 1 notebook on Win XP Pro
- i have wireless lans for both my notebooks
- using Starhub broadband 1500 with ethernet modem
- i'm living in a rather large apartment (150 sqm), PC and laptops in different room so think i need something with quite strong signal?
- my PC is just beside my cable point
- how do i make my connection secure so that other people can't access the network?

pls let me know what i need to buy and which brand i should get. budget not very high unfortunately. i appreciate any help!

thanks!

You might need another short cat5e cable to connect your computer to the router (or your modem to the router).

You can try Linksys WRT54G. The signal coverage should be enough.

To restrict access to the network, enable MAC address filtering, WEP and WPA.

WRT54G seems good but i'm not very sure whether it will receive the signals strong enough.. any suggestions ?? i don't want to shift my computer to the first level due to pirvacy reasons. Hope you understand =)

Got some newbie question need to ask u gurus:
Just move to a new house, and plan to sub for either MOL or SNBB..
and will like to make WLAN on my unit..

Q1.I got 2 laptop, one with centrino n one without, and two desktop PC w/o Network cArd.
So now if i gotta buy linksys WRT54G Router, and how many wireless adapter i need to bought for my desktops n non-centrino laptop? is that mean i gotta buy 3 more adapters for the 2 desktop n one laptop there?

Q2.is it one of the PC need to be on 24/7, as to connect to the net anytime?

Q3.did the linksys WRT54G router come with print Server?

Q4. the adapter need not to be same brand as router right?since the WRT54G serve as a AP also.. so is that mean my neighbour can easily detect my network?can i make it invisible?

that's some Qs i need to know, before i go n setup my home wireless network...
so hope can hear from u guys soon..

(1) Each device needs a receiver/adapter to get the signal from the Linksys router. If you desktops are near enough to the router, just use a LAN cable instead.

(2) No need to turn any comp on 24x7. The Linksys is the one that holds the connection to the Internet.

(3) No print server. But with today's wireless print servers prices, you can place the printer anywhere with one.

(4) As long as it uses the 11b/g standard, no problem. You can disable your entwork ID by disabling SSID. Your neighbour will know someone is there, but not know what the ID is. You can't make a radio wave invisible.

Good luck!

The Linksys WRT54GS that I use with the 7db Linksys antennae works well for me. You may have to get another WRT54GS to act as a repeater to extend your signal. That is what I use to get through additional floors and walls. With third-party firmware, you can also boost the trasmitting power of the router to up to 251mw instead of the 28mw that the Linksys come with.

Well, to me i'll go for the wireless G router + usb adapter that cost ard $163 in fuwell.
reason :
1) The wireless b router alone cost $76 from the price guide.
2) Not worth the price to get something that's slightly back dated with the whole wireless technology evolving rapidly.
3) wireless router alone doesn't make u have wireless ... u need wireless adapter too ($67)

However when I connect my notebook to the network using a linksys wireless network card for notebook in my bedroom which is about 12m away with 2 wall, the signal is always very low or sometimes no signal.

Is there anyway I can boost the signal strength or how should i place all my equipment so as to get at least decent signal strength from my room?

Hmm... It's hard for me to say how to position the stuff.

But rule of thumb:
1) Try to position the wireless router in the middle of all connecting devices
2) Or try to shift all connecting devices such that there is minimum walls to the wireless router.

3) If u config the wireless to accept b/g, just config it to accept b unless ur wireless card is g based.

Experts out there, pls correct me if i'm wrong :D

You should put the access point somewhere high for better coverage.
A room with 5 walls away from access point is not so small actually.

not sure about Netgear, have not used 1 before, hope others will give their value added opinions.

always have the impression that the SMC products are not as user friendly as the Linksys, just bought the SMC7401BRA ADSL modem+ router at $155, the cheapest on the market, but the setup is really not that straight forwards as expected, nevertheless once setup it performs really well, love the price.

I have got this modem from my fren n i do not know how to configure. Can anyone help me? Stayed up the whole night liao... :(

Reason why Linksys over Netgear

http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showthread.php?p=13009026&posted=1#post13009026

Generally most cards are based on recommended reference boards of chipset manufacturers. So what you're paying for is essentially the same stuff. What differs is the after service rendered and quality of the build device.

http://linuxwifi.com/modules/wiwimod/?page=DeviceList

Above link list the various manufacturers as well as the chipsets they use to build their products.

For example, the $67 linksys wmp54g version 4 is the same as the $50 edimax card. What differs is the warranty and possibly the quality of the build. (Edimax has external antenna for better reception though)

how come u use cross from modem to router ?? though it should be straight one.

for qns 1. use dynamic.
qns 2. up to your like. if not put 202.156.1.68 and 202.156.1.58. by right your router will grab this piece of info by it self.
qns3. your gateway for your internal should be your router IP.

u keep getting 203.x.x.x but u can surf net ??

Confirmed Straight???
My last 3 setups for MaxOnline last year all uses Cross-Cables.

for qns 1. use dynamic.

Okie, will give it a try, remembered i used "Dynamic" too in my last previous 3 setups last year too.

qns 2. up to your like. if not put 202.156.1.68 and 202.156.1.58. by right your router will grab this piece of info by it self.

Unable to grap, thus force it on LAN settings

qns3. your gateway for your internal should be your router IP.

Yes, i did not.

Confirmed Straight???
My last 3 setups for MaxOnline last year all uses Cross-Cables.

>>ok u compare the wire at the jack part see if the color are same as each other if they are it's straight if there is a diff then it cross.

Okie, will give it a try, remembered i used "Dynamic" too in my last previous 3 setups last year too.
>> i believe your pass few router u clone your mac address from your pc NIC. this time never that why cannot. if still cannot call scv tell them to recapture your mac address.

Unable to grap, thus force it on LAN settings
>> no use. becos your mac ID is not in their mac address list they wont allow u to connect.

Nope. cant surf. It should not be 203.x.x.x for SCV.
yes SCV is 202.x.x.x
>> if still cannot try callling them up and tell them u have this problem. but first u must try cloning your IP from your PC that was use to configure your old router and clone the mac id and test out first. if not next time u wan to connect another new one u have to call them up again.
hope u under roguhly wat i said.

have a cable internet connection at home and it is connected to a Netgear FWG114P wireless router. I have one computer connected via wire to the router and another in the room connected via wireless connection.

The computer in the room uses Wireless connection and I have a Netgear PCI wireless adaptor (WG311). But my wireless connection is not consistent and gets disconnected from time to time. I have recently crimped a low loss cable so I can detached the antenna from the back of my PCI card to the top of my computer so it is not blocked by any other perphirals. I have also placed a curved aluminium plate at the back of the antenna. This have improved my consistency by about 20 mins before it gets d/c again when I turn on the computer in the room. I have tried using all the channels in the router but the connection is still unreliable. I also have downloaded the latest drivers and firmware for the PCI adaptor.

I have read from certain sites saying that the Netgear PCI adaptor is unreliable. Is that true? How can I improve my connection. My house also has a problem because I live up on the 25th storey. I can't even recieve my handphone reception properly meaning I only can answer my calls either in the kitchen or near a window in my house. But I have previously used a linksys 802.11b wireless router and a USB adaptor with no problems at all. There are other connections around mine but the signal in the room always show that I have full signal strength from my router. What is the problem? Please advise! Thank You!!

My computer is a PIII 800Mhz, running Xp SP2

try placing the antena further from the PC itself. no near to any TV or monitor as this high discharge electronics stuff will distrub the freq. another way is get that card swap with another G one and see if still same thing persist. as for your mobile get your mobile provider to do something about. it should not be the case that onli certain place got freq. your somemore is high floor mean there should be more coverage since there is not much blockage around u.

how far is your PC to your router?
using your old router will not help becos it is not a booster all it can do is repeat the signal that all at a slower speed.

Advice needed:

I just bought the belkin wireless pre N router 802.11g . (ie: just)

at home , I already have dlink-804V (switch/router/nat firewall) + a creative broadbandblaster (adsl modem) .

that aside, I was previously using a linksys wireless (don't have model no offhand), but it tends to disconnect/lose signal for no reason , so connection drops on and off at least a couple times a day.

I have the linksys wireless B WUSB11 ver 2.8, should I change to a 802.11g type receiver?

also, how do i be "friendly" to neighbour's networks (ie: channels/bandwidth without overpowering them etc)

last but not least, my sister uses a apple g4, the stupid airport thingy can never connect to my linksys 802.11b previously. and cannot recognise the WUSB11 receiver, is there anyway to put a g4 into wireless at the moment? (ie: which brand of usb wireless network adapter is 802.11g/b compatible and mac compatible)

firstly 11G product is still in its infancy period, the cost is still very high, at 3 to 4 times the price of 11B's. you pay only $100 for a 11B PC card, but more than $300 for a 11G PC card,

next, 11B's data transfer rate of 11Mbps is more than enough for most of us, the DSL downstream is only 512 Mbps, so 11 Mbps is already more than 20 times of the DSL speed. even for files transfer, you can transfer a 4 MB MP3 files in 5 seconds, with the 11 Mbps speed.

so, unless you really have lots of extra money to spend, common folks like us don't need the 11G.

just an analogy: with our road speed limit of 90 KMPH, i am happy with my Toyota, it can bring me from Changi Airport to Raffles Country Club in 35 minutes. do i need a Ferrari, which may be able to do the same job within 30 minutes (not breaking the law), but it costs 6 times more?

Hi all,

I need some of your expertise's help. I just bought a laptop HP NX6110 using 802.11g wireless. I can connect to most of the wireless networks except for the ones at Macdonald's which is using Skynetglobal and 802.11b. Is it not compatible?

I can see the signal strength and everything but cannot connect. When I go Burger King, I can connect to the Singtel page and it pops up. The macdonald's flash page does not appear at all.

In what way can i connect to the 802.11b networks? Change settings? Change my card or wat?

Anyone knows?

No need to change the card. (Anyway the wireless is built in so you can't "change" it physically.

Check your wireless software setup to ensure that your wireless network adapter can connect to both b and g. AS far as hardware is concern, you should be able to so it's the software part that might be pointing to "G" only networks.

Having said that, I'm sure BK also uses "b" network so I do not think it's this diff.

When you were at Macd, did u do a search for wireless network to see if you can find the Macd's AP?

hi all,

I have been using a Netgear wireless router MR314 and a Aztech DSL 900 turbo adsl modem since late 2003. Lately the signal stregth as indicated on my laptop (fujitsu s2020, bought at the same time) has been eratic. Most of the time the signal drops to "Low" while the the "Speed" is 11 Mps. There has been no change in the setup of my router and i live in a 4-rm flat. I know there have been more wireless networks set up by neighbours so i tried to change channels but to no avail.

Is my router or laptop's built-in receiver giving up? Advice is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Greetings dan, im facing a major connection problem here.

- im living in a 5room HDB flat and bought a computer with good specs a year ago. my living room has a older computer with the modem(SCV CABLE) n a router(DLINK DI-624+).

i placed the new comp i bought in my room which is around 8 metres plus minus from the router with a big wall between them.

the computer comes with a wireless PCI 802.11b/g adapter WN4201B and an antenna.

for the first few mths, it was perfectly alrite. gaming was smooth ( im a gamer. not really hardcore ) den.. things started to get weird. i tot DLINK's router was the problem. and i got a new router (Linksys WRT54G) but problem was still there... 6mths later.. i couldnt stand the " low signal strength " and thus the slow connectivity. sometimes even " low or no connectivity ". i got really pissed off. i went to sim lim and brought along my antenna + wire-that-connects-the-antenna-to-comp and they adviced me to buy the wire extension. and so i did. 5metres long. it was long enuff that the antenna was out of my room and directly facing the antenna.

i got really busy and stopped gaming. i still turn on my computer everyday to do my school work. but it was more or less net surfing only. now.. im having my holidays. i started gaming again ( CS, warcraft ). and i found it i lag alot!!! i was really upset. i tot it was my router. so i change and change but it was to no avail. i updated my graphic card driver.. defragment my C drive.. did anti virus scan. in short, i did everything i could.. but still problem persisted.. LAG. after some time i figured out that the 5metre wire is the problem.

i recently bought a laptop and the laptop can do wireless from the same spot in my room! so that means the wall is no big factor.
so.. IF i remove the 5metre wire and place the antenna in my room, " low signal strength" will appear and cant even do gaming.

OR if i use the wire. net surfing will be perfect. but gaming comes lag every now and then.

i really dunno what to do.. kinda lost. can u advice me..? do i need an extra device to help function properly? and which router is better, my dlink's or linksys's

Thanks,
Jerome.

SKynetglobal is using Nokia equipment. Thus, if u r using Linksys earlier version of PCMCIA Wi-Fi card, or any card that's using the Prism Nitro chipset, there's a chance that you could see the SSID, but unable to logon. This info derived from MacDonald's hotline which I called 2 years ago when they started the service

Hey guys, I am not sure if I am posting to the right thread, but hopefully can get advise from some of the experts here.

I am planning to setup multiple connection, e.g. broadband from 2 different ISP and a HSDPA connection to my wireless connection that is shared by 4pc and few other wireless devices.

The simplest and cheapest way that I found is using parallel broadband support ( www.cpx.com/whitepapers/ Compex%20Parallel%20Broadband.pdf) via Compex Wireless Router (http://www.compex.com.sg/home/products1.asp?2005021320464) .

Would appreciate if anyone can share experience if done similiar setup or have better way to setup multiple internet connection to a network? The ultimate purpose is increase the total bandwidth, availability & failover.

Hi HWZ,

I've just started doing a modem -> router -> wireless adaptor (desktop) for wireless connection. I still very greenhorn in terms of networking.

The adaptor that I'm using is EnGenius EUB -3071 802.11b/g 54Mbps

More info on the USB adaptor:
http://www.engeniustech.com/datacom/products/details.aspx?id=238

However, I keep getting disconnected (d/c) from time to time. The signal strength received is also weak as indicated on my EnGenius driver utility. It is pretty irritating and I want to download files and play online games without any interception/disruption.

Should I upgrade my usb adaptor to wireless N type : http://www.engeniustech.com/datacom/products/details.aspx?id=225 ??

Please advice on what should I do to have a smooth wireless connection. :o

Best regards,

In the PS3 when you setup your internet connection, you are able to do a test to make sure it is working.

You can also do a simple test by trying to do a system update.

If that worked, that means internet connection exists and the previous message you got was due to a down server on the internet.

Routers with duel band capabilities i.e. both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands are starting to appear in the market. I recently picked up an Apple router and it gives me access at both bands. Normally one would naturally want to use the 5 ghz band its less crowded.
