Actually there's more AC fans then Inter fans. :) Maybe it's just that they dont visit HWZ much?

Anyway, i truly have a strong feeling that AC will win the CL. That's from what i see.

I'm Serie A supporter. I love AC Milan but I'm so sad to see such a good attacking team ruin in the hand of Carlo Ancelotti. The truth is "Defensive" is rooted inside Ancelotti's mind, heart and soul. He can never bring out the best of this AC Milan team.

So what if AC Milan lost in CL. If the result got Ancelotti sacked and got them a good coach, than I'll see AC Milan conquering the Europe next season.

Get Gigi Del Neri, the current Chievo coach. He's attacking minded and look at how he bring out the best of Chievo's 2nd graded players!

Please please get rid of Ancelotti!!!

Ancelotti has successfully deploy all the players into their very own position... Who says Pirlo can't play as a DM? Who says Simic can't fit into RB? Who says Gattuso can't play on the left? They have all done well in their role...

As for the defensive game they are playing... Wat have u got to say in the match against Bologna? They attack from the very beginning... From all the matches that I watch, Milan has always be the side that attack, attack and attack... Remember who dominate the attacks against Parma, Depor, Real, Juve and Inter? They were unlucky not to convert those chances...

Successfully? For so many 1:0 games you think is successfu? There's no excuse for just saying that they're unlucky not to convert those chances.

I admit that at the beginning of the season they did play attacking football. But that's only in the beginning. So how after that, from top of the Serie A chart to what they're now!!! Ancelotti's fox tail begins to show out...

Anyway that's no point arguing. But I predict how he'll play in the final of CL. AC Milan lead by 1 goal and he'll replace Rui Costa & Andriy Shevchenko with 2 defencsive midfielders. They start to defence, defence and defence and leave Inzaghi in front struggling. Juventus flight from behind and won their CL.....

I sincerely hope that my prediction will go into the drain and I hope you can slap me and tell me to shut up my mouth after the CL. All because I hope AC Milan to win!!! But only if they're lucky to defence their 1 goal lead!!!

Of almost all Serie A team, AC can considered the more attacking minded team. :D

But i believe their form will be back in the final. I think Anchelotti will play defensive if they manage to secore 2 goal lead after 65minutes or so. If they can't secure 2 goal lead, i think they will keep on attacking. You can't judge a team form just from their previous match. I can sense that their form are coming back.

They might even get the second place in the Serie A but i hope not coz i want Inter to at least get a 2nd. LOL

Juv form have been very consistent but they need Nedved to push the front forward. It will be a close match and score line i believe will not have more then 2 goal in the first 90 minutes. Might end up draw and have to go into extra time or worse, PK.

Yes, Hecter Cuper is the ultimate coach that have ultra defensive tactic in mind.

Inter team looks so strong yet he fail to make full use of it.

Vieri, Crespo, Recoba, Emre, J. Janetti are all pack with forces to go full scale attack. I'm pretty sure if coach with attack in mind lead Inter, Inter will not be the underdog anymore.

But he somehow manage to secure 2nd place in the serie A. So maybe his defensive magic do works.

Yap Hector Cuper playing defensive football, he admitted it, insisted it and he played it. Unlike Ancelotti, if you ever watched those matches during his days at Juventus & Parma, you should know how defensive he was. And if you ever read those comments from Silvio Berlusconi (Chairman) and Adriano Galliani (Vice Chairman) than you should know they're the two who want Ancelotti to play attacking football. It seems to me Ancelotti was forced to play attacking football but inside his mind he still prefer in defensive football. I don't know how to explain the situation, just like buying a piece of beef and insisted the chef to make it taste like chicken. In the first place why don't you buy a piece of chicken and cook like chicken?

after solving some financial problem last year, Inter's aim is to get the Champions for this year... therefore they look very strong when series started...

but somehow, Inter cannot maintain their form till the series end... strikers also faced some injuries from time to times...

Crespo and Veiri scored many of Inter's goal till Crespo injured... and the coach brought in Batistuta... though manage to score some goals... but not as good as Crespo and Vieir pairing...

Yap I totally agreed with you. Inter need a more attacking minded coach. How about Roberto Mancini, Lazio coach now. He do a very good job and he get along well with players. Now there's rumous if Mancini join Inter, Veron will agree to a swope with Recoba. Isn't Inter need a good midfielder!

Vieri has lost his patient with Inter and if Cuper remains at Inter next season, I don't see why he want to stay at Inter anymore.

I really hope that Inter President Massimo Moratti will sack Cuper after this season. The truth is Cuper is not able to lead Inter to any glory. I pray everyday : sack cuper, sack cuper...

i think cuper bought some sort of stability to the team before he came Inter was a difficult team to coach bcause if the coach dont deliver, he will be sacked immediately. just look at the years before cuper came virtually there were new coaches every season.

To me cuper did a great job in bringing INter back to the top 3 of the serie a again. But i guess his abilities are there only. For INTER to go to the next level, i think change of the manager will be much helpful.

I have to agree with you that Cuper is somehow doing a decent job and i dont know how the hell he can do that. But if this continues, Inter is going nowhere. It's like it will be stuck there till the Cuper is changed with a better coach.

One look at the team member and you will know this team is more to the attacking side. Me too hope that Inter will remove Cuper and get a more reputable manager to lead Inter to glory!

BTW, it seems like this thread is slowly turning into a how Inter can improve threads. LOL

Latest News:

Milan seem to have the Coppa Italia in the bag after Serginho's brace earned a crushing 4-1 first leg victory at Roma's Stadio Olimpico.

The Rossoneri are the only team fighting on three fronts and rested several top stars ahead of the Champions?ELeague Final.

The Giallorossi are already assured of the UEFA Cup qualifying spot given to the winners of this trophy, as Milan will enter the Champions?ELeague next season.

Francesco Totti and Marcos Cafu returned from long injury lay-offs to support the on-form Antonio Cassano upfront, but Vincenzo Montella and Francisco Lima were out of action.

Milan had the first real chance on nine minutes when Tomasson chested down the ball, flipped it over Jonathan Zebina and brought a difficult save out of Ivan Pelizzoli.

Christian Abbiati was also tested with a flying fingertip save on Cassano’s splendid curling effort ?Ea finish usually associated with Juve’s Alessandro Del Piero.

Rivaldo showed more enthusiasm than Milan fans have become accustomed to and charged past several defenders, but Zebina out-sprinted him as he reached the box.

Francesco Totti eventually broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion. On the half-hour mark the Roma captain rifled a simply unstoppable free kick into the roof of the net from almost thirty metres. The sheer power on the finish did not stop it curling around the defensive wall.

It was a tense game with a high tempo and there were several yellow cards during the first half. Christian Brocchi, Massimo Ambrosini and Cafu will be suspended for the second leg. Fabio Capello’s men were more energetic and took control after Totti’s goal.

Rivaldo got into a good scoring position on the edge of the box, but somehow fired well wide of the target.

The visitors fought back after the break, but Brocchi’s effort was deflected out for a corner kick.

Soon after Pelizzoli made a reaction save on Tomasson’s close-range effort, but there were also penalty appeals for a push on Serginho.

Milan poured forward and left Roma space to counter-attack, but Abbiati performed a difficult save on Cafu’s angled drive.

The pressure paid off on 62 minutes when Christian Panucci slapped the ball off Tomasson’s chest and the referee pointed to the spot.

Milan have missed five penalties in Serie A this season, but Serginho converted successfully to draw level.

The Giallorossi charged back into the game and had a double chance moments later. Emerson’s fierce volley was fingertipped onto the post before Abbiati plucked Panucci’s header off the line.

The game turned around completely on 70 minutes with a curious piece of luck for the Rossoneri. Massimo Ambrosini’s totally free header took a decisive deflection off Zebina to leave his goalkeeper helpless.

Tomasson was forced off with a shoulder injury, so Andriy Shevchenko made a late appearance.

Roma were clearly in shock and soon after Serginho sprung the offside trap to lift the ball over Pelizzoli.

It was an action-packed second half and Abbiati was again crucial on Totti’s bullet free kick, but was very shaky on another effort from the captain. Daniele De Rossi’s free header shaved the near post as Roma kept pushing.

In the final minute substitute Andriy Shevchenko sealed the humiliating scoreline with a wonderful goal. The Ukrainian took the ball past Panucci with his chest before a delicate lob left the ‘keeper stranded.

The second leg will be played at the San Siro on May 31.

Roma 1-4 Milan

Scorers: Totti 28 (R), Serginho pen 62, 73 (M), Zebina og 70 (M), Shevchenko 89 (M)

So with Coppa Italian cup almost within reach, Final in CL and 3rd place with possible a 2nd place finish in the league is considered bad? I dun think so... In fact so far, I will say Milan has a successful season be it a win or loss in the CL final... The reason y Milan is in 3rd place and not in the first place is because of the inconsistent form against those weaker teams... They have struggled against the weaker team... I still can't believe that they lose to Empoli at home... and failing to beat Brescia and Atalanta... This is wre Inter and Juve gain ground.. They beat these weaker teams with ease... And in each and every game, Milan dominate the proceeding and have a better chances of scoring but the finishing is not up to standard... The 1-0 scoreline is not because Ancelotti deploy a defensive strategy but because the strikers can't put in all the opportunites... This is not an excuse but this is how it is... Ancelotti may not be a coach who opt for an out and out attack but neither is he a very defensive coach as Hector Cuper...

Inter boss Moritti likes Totti very much. He ever said that he wanted Totti wearing Inter shirt. But, but Francesco Totti never want to leave Roma. He ever said that even if Roma relegated to Serie B, he'll still follow.

How about Vieri go to Roma :D But again Roma boss Sensi is a super stingy boss, no way for him to fork out the money. So we can only enjoy both in Azurri's shirt :)

I dunno what u expect. But for me I've a higher expection from AC Milan. Still remember the 80's period the 3 Dutch Musketeers who rip all european teams apart? I think with the players they have now it is not too demanding to ask for more. But with Ancelotti as Milan Coach, one can never expect AC Milan to turn to a team near that.

I never want to compare Ancelotti to Hector Cuper coz Cuper is gone case, he has reach the limit and already beyond our toleration level.

I strongly believe a more agressive and attacking minded coach will help Milan to achieve more, gain more respect and fear others more.

I still bet on Gigi Del Neri, the current Chievo coach. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Piacenza are already relegated, but wanted to give the home fans a good sending off. Dario Hubner broke the deadlock within five minutes with a fine volley from eight yards on Davide Baiocco's centre.

Milan rested almost their entire squad and essentially fielded the youth team in their final Serie A match of the season.

Piacenza doubled their lead soon after from the spot when Stefano dragged back Hubner. Enzo Maresca stepped up to successfully convert the penalty.

The referee also pointed to the spot at the other end of the field when Vittorio Tosto held back Ibrahim Ba by his shirt. Christian Brocchi drilled home to put Milan back in it.

The scoreline lasted for all of 60 seconds before Marco Marchionni rose to nod in a Tosto cross.

Milan's youth team was not up to the task and Hubner scored another low drive on the counter-attack.

Brocchi salvaged a moment of dignity in stoppage time with a wonderful looping effort from the edge of the box that slotted into the top corner.

Champions’ League winners Milan have confirmed that they have completed the signing of Marcos Cafu.

The Italian giants made the move official on Monday morning stating that Cafu had agreed a two-year deal which will expire on 30 June 2005.

The Brazilian international arrives at the San Siro on a Bosman free transfer after his contract with Roma expired.

The Giallorossi did offer the wing-back a new salary reduced deal but that was rejected by the 33-year-old.

Cafu has been linked with a move to Milan for months even if that was put into doubt after he signed a pre-contract with Yokohama Marinos.

However, the J-League side tore up that agreement on Friday at the request of the player which allowed the Italian side to conclude talks.

He already underwent a medical with Milan last week, just hours before he flew back to his homeland for his summer break.

Italian giants Milan have confirmed that they want to sign Manchester United ace David Beckham.

The midfielder has been linked with the Champions’ League winners for some time and an Italian bid could be imminent.

"Beckham is our primary target," Galliani told ‘The Sun’ newspaper. "We are pursuing our objective and we will do everything in our power to get him."

The England captain has been at the centre of transfer speculation for the last few months.

Spanish giants Real Madrid were the first serious link as stories gathered pace that they would be launching a summer bid.

Then Barcelona were associated with a £30m offer which led to United admitting that they had "received serious interest from a number of top Spanish and Italian clubs."

Galliani did initially claim that Beckham’s personal sponsorship deals would make his arrival at the San Siro unlikely.

But he also stated last year that the club would not be making a move for Alessandro Nesta just weeks before they signed the Lazio ace.

Should Milan miss out on Beckham then his proposed move to Real Madrid could still favour the Rossoneri.

His possible switch to the Stadio Bernabeu would raise question marks on the future of Luis Figo who is also liked by Milan.

Brazilian World Cup captain Marcos Cafu has spoken for the first time after sealing a move to Milan.

"I’m delighted to be playing for the Rossoneri because this is a great club," he told the Milan website.

"I feel privileged that this outfit has chosen me and I hope to honour this shirt in every opportunity that I am given."

The Italian giants today confirmed that they had signed the 33-year-old after his contract with Roma expired.

"I can’t wait to play my first game at the San Siro," he continued. "I’m already concentrating on the new campaign in which I am looking to win as much as possible."

Cafu becomes the latest Brazilian to join the ranks as Dida, Roque Junior and Rivaldo are already at the club.

"It should be a good atmosphere for us," he added. "I know them all well and they are great players.

"We Brazilians are always happy when we have the chance to spend time with each other.

"I also expect Rivaldo to make a real impact next year. It is only normal that it takes time for someone to get used to a new environment.

"Yet he now knows how the Italian game works and he will be a real protagonist in the new season."

Milan chief Silvio Berlusconi has ruled out the possibility of a multi-million pound swoop for David Beckham.

Rossoneri Vice-president Adriano Galliani was quoted as saying that Beckham was Milan’s "primary objective" this summer but Berlusconi has distanced his club from a £30m move.

"There are a lot better ways to spend money, which was earned thanks to many sacrifices, than to get Mr Beckham," said the Italian Prime Minister.

The Manchester United ace looks set to leave Old Trafford over the next few months as links with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Italy continue.

Some reports in the peninsula on Monday suggested that the Rossoneri would offer the Premiership champions Andriy Shevchenko in return for the England captain.

"Shevchenko is not for sale," insisted Galliani. "I can’t understand the motives behind why such a false story would be published.

"Shevchenko has never been and will never be involved in any transfer negotiations involving Milan. He is untouchable."

There are rumors abt Totti to Milan as well...
I dun understand Milan wanted to sign a 32 going to be 33 yr old right back... At most, he'll last for 2 yrs and after that, We'll have to look for a new rb to replace him... Now, We are pending money on his wages for the next 2 yrs and when he retire, We have to look for another RB in the market and that will cost Milan another sum of money... They might as well look for a young RB now rather than to change the RB after just 2 yrs...

i dun really want Tottil to join AC Milan. Imagine 1st Nesta and now Totti, it's too much for Rome fans (both Roma & Lazio) to take it.

One should go is Sensi. He always claim he love Roma but he actually ruined Roma.

They just want an easy fix. Cafu is proven in Serie A and he cost Milan nothing. Based on last year transfer, Milan will try to target player with proven quality, and free/cheap. They might only want to spend on one star player, just like what they did to Nesta last year.

Haven't been in HWZ for some time. Wow... finally, there's a milan thread.

Anyway, got this piece of news from the website of Football Italia. It's a good source to keep up with the latest news in Serie A. Dunno how true this is, but I certainly hope it won't come true.

In my opinion, Kaladze is the defensive version of Shevchenko! Rivaldo wasn't given the chance to prove his worth just after a season.

Please, who the heck is Beckham??? Is he worth Milan sacrificing this much??? He's only fantastic with the crosses and freekicks. Take away these 2 attributes (plus his looks), he's a nobody!

Shev shoots for Lo Scudetto

Andriy Shevchenko believes Milan will be title contenders despite their lack of signings this summer.

The Rossoneri have been criticised for their shortage of investment but the striker insists that new faces are not needed.

"I?fm not concerned by what people are saying about our transfer campaign," he stated.

"This is a solid group of players who have won some important trophies. We want to continue that trend."

The Italian giants have only really brought in Marcos Cafu after keeping faith with the squad that won the Champions?f League and the Coppa Italia last term.

"There are players here that still have plenty to give like Fernando Redondo," continued the forward. "He can improve as have Andrea Pirlo and Kakha Kaladze recently."

Shev has been touted as a possible contender for the 2003 Golden Ball but that doesn?ft seem to be on his mind.

"I?fm not thinking about it, the European Footballer of the Year award is not an objective of mine," he insisted.

"If I had a choice of what I wanted to win this season then it would be Lo Scudetto. But to do that we will have to forget about our success of last term."

Milan end summer spending

Milan director general Ariedo Braida maintains that the club?fs transfer activity has now ended for the summer.

The Rossoneri transfer chief claims that the signing of Lazio?fs Giuseppe Pancaro has brought an end to the club?fs buying and selling campaign.

"With his arrival and the departure of Demetrio Albertini, we can consider the market closed for us," he said. "Don?ft expect any surprises between now and deadline day."

Pancaro arrived at Milanello last night in a swap deal that sees Albertini move in the other direction.

"Milan were the only side that could tempt me to leave Rome," the defender stated. "It is an honour to wear this shirt.

"I spent six wonderful seasons with Lazio but I didn?ft have to think twice about signing for Milan."

There were claims that Milan would use the Pancaro talks to make a new bid for Jaap Stam (pictured). But Braida insists the Dutchman won?ft be joining his outfit.

"While finalising the swap deal with Lazio we didn?ft touch on the Stam situation at all," concluded the official.

The Scudetto Showdowns 2003-2004

Football Italia gives you a run-down of the top ties in the upcoming Serie A season including some early clashes for the title.

Scudetto holders Juventus face their first tough test as early as Week 3 when they welcome Roma to the Stadio Delle Alpi.

This is always a difficult game, particularly now that the Giallorossi are free from Champions' League commitments.

The Milanese sides are on the up and go head to head in the derby on October 5, the fifth match of the campaign.

It's a difficult month for both sides, as the Rossoneri welcome wild cards Lazio to the San Siro in Week 6 and repeat the Champions' League Final clash with Juventus fourteen days later.

Inter then take on Fabio Capello's Roma in Week 7, but fans must wait until Nov 30 for the Derby d'Italia with Juve in Turin.

The Rome derby remains one of the most heated fixtures in Europe and the Stadio Olimpico prepares for battle in Week 9.

Roberto Mancini's Lazio must juggle European commitments with some tough games during December.

The Biancocelesti will welcome Juventus on the 7th, then take on Inter just before the Christmas break.

The final big game before the halfway point of the campaign will be Roma-Milan, as Marcos Cafu returns to his old stomping ground in Week 15.

The top ties:

Week 3 (21/9, return 8/2/04): Juventus-Roma

Week 5 (5/10, return 22/2/04): Inter-Milan

Week 6 (19/10, return 29/2/04): Milan-Lazio

Week 7 (26/10, return 7/3/04): Inter-Roma

Week 8 (2/11, return 14/3/04): Milan-Juventus

Week 9 (9/11, return 21/3/04): Roma-Lazio

Week 11 (30/11, return 4/4): Juventus-Inter

Week 12 (7/12, return 10/4): Lazio-Juventus

Week 14 (21/12, return 25/4/04): Lazio-Inter

Week 15 (6/1/04, return 2/5): Roma-Milan

i hope so, if i'm not wrong last season milan also has a slow start (especially in CL qualifying). maybe the 2 losses do them good.

but wat i worry most is whenever shevchenko & pippo play together, there seems to lack of or few goals leh. i still fancy playing 1 striker upfront and rivaldo & rui costa behind him.

Rossoneri announce Kaka deal
Wednesday 13 August, 2003

The official Milan website has confirmed that Brazilian starlet Kaka will join the team next week.

“The agreement for the young talent appears to be in its closing stages,?Eread the statement.

“At the start of next week the player could be in Italy to sign the contract and complete a medical exam.?E

The breakthrough occurred last night, when director Leonardo held talks with Kaka’s club Sao Paolo.

The Brazilian side’s President told the local press “the offer has been raised to £7m.?E

21-year-old Kaka is a creative midfielder with a fierce shot from distance and recently made his name at the Gold Cup.

Also tracked by Real Madrid and Chelsea, Milan have been in negotiations for the player for several weeks.

It was thought that he would be loaned out to Paris Saint-Germain or even Parma for his first European season.

However, the official club statement suggests Kaka?Ewill begin his Serie A career with the Rossoneri in the 2003-04 campaign.

The continuing injury woes for Rivaldo, Andriy Shevchenko and Jon Dahl Tomasson apparently prompted this move.

Ancelotti: What goal problem?

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti insists his side don't have a scoring problem despite a lack of goals in pre-season.

The European champions have yet to win any of their four pre-season games in which they have scored just one goal.

And that was only a penalty from Andrea Pirlo against Juve in the Italian Super Cup.

"We were just unlucky in games against Barcelona and Juventus," said the tactician. "We created a lot of chances in those matches which could have easily been turned into goals."

However, Milan's problems continued in last night's Trofeo TIM when they lost 1-0 to firstly Juventus and then Inter.

That has led to claims that the Rossoneri could bring in Sao Paulo attacking midfielder Kaka as soon as possible.

With Rivaldo still struggling for fitness, the 21-year-old may be requested immediately by Ancelotti in order to give his side a new attacking option.

Even if it must be noted that Milan's search for goals hasn't been made easier with the thigh injury sustained by Andriy Shevchenko.

----------------------------------------------------

4 friendly matches without a goal still no problem?

i thought the biggest problem is the coach himself. sack him lah

Sao Paulo attacking midfielder Kaka is on his way to Italy today to sign a five-year contract with AC Milan. After months of negotiations a deal has been agreed which will see the Brazilian international earn a cool £1.2 million-a-season at the San Siro.

not only is the transfer fee for kaka quite reasonable i think adidas pay some part of it cause they want kaka in milan. milan is saving the money for the one big purchase.

only got 3 persons follow italian soccer in this forums. i saw quite a few singaporeans in milanmania forums but seem like they never come here to post.

U visit Milanmania as well??? That's cool....
Anyway, like wat I say in other forums (Or is it in this forum), Milan like to make their big signing at the very last day of the transfer window... I dun really like that idea... Imagine how much the new players has missed out on the pre-season friendlies.... The friendlies should be the time wre the coach tries out their new signing and allocate them to their respective position to see which suit them best... Surely u wouldn't want to field an experimental team out there when the season starts...

I believe and hope that Milan will make 1 more signing although it's a bit late in the transfer market.... 5.3m for Kaka is a good bargain and Milan still have many more resources for other players especially they brought Cafu and Pancaro all on free transfer... Milan earn a roughly 50m last season by winning the CL.... They should have at least 30m in excess after all the expenditure... 30m could fetch up a few good players.....

Milan thinking of Di Vaio

Milan's pre-season scoring crisis may see the European Champions renew their interest in Marco Di Vaio of Juventus.

The Rossoneri again failed to pierce the net last night as they were beaten 2-0 by the Bianconeri in the Trofeo Berlusconi.

That leaves Carlo Ancelotti's side with the depressing statistic of having scored just one goal so far, a penalty from Andrea Pirlo in the Italian Super Cup Final.

Milan were already linked with a move for Di Vaio earlier this summer in a switch which would have seen Jon Dahl Tomasson move in the other direction.

Now reports in Italy suggest that the transfer could still happen in Milan's effort to pep up their attack for the new campaign.

Speculation suggests that respective transfer chiefs Luciano Moggi and Ariedo Braida held initial talks at the San Siro last night.

Meanwhile, Milan are also being linked with moves for Juve stopper Mark Iuliano and Carles Puyol of Barcelona.

That after captain Paolo Maldini was ruled out, for possibly the next six weeks, with an ankle injury suffered in training.

The Italian legend is pencilled in to return to first team action on October 5 in the derby against Inter.

Maldini out for a month

Milan captain Paolo Maldini has been ruled out for at least four weeks with a sprained ankle.

The veteran defender fell during training on Saturday and seemed to catch his studs in the turf.

Tests were carried out on the left ankle and club doctors ruled out the possibility of a fracture.

But the sprain was nonetheless severe and will force Maldini to miss out on both tonight's Berlusconi trophy tie with Juventus and the august 29 European Super Cup clash against Porto.

As Champions' League winners, the Rossoneri will take on the Portuguese side that lifted the UEFA Cup last season.

This is a bitter blow for the team, as captain Maldini will also be forced to sit out the start of the Serie A season on Sept 1 against Ancona.

Brazilian Roque Junior should be given the nod to partner Alessandro Nesta in central defence.

However, as the club has been trying to sign a new player for that position all summer, there could be one final push on the transfer market.

Only this week Milan completed the signing of Sao Paolo's Brazilian creative midfielder Kaka for £5.3m.

-------------------------------------------

base on Milan's recent performance, dun think they can beat Porto in European Super Cup.

btw any live telecast?

Rivaldo...FREE TRANSFER??

September 5, 2003

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi is believed ready to hand Rivaldo a free transfer in January.

The emergence of Kaka at the San Siro has cast more doubts over Rivaldo's status at the European champs.

Milan received enquiries over the summer from Tottenham and Middlesbrough for the Brazilian superstar and press reports yesterday suggested Berlusconi was considering offering Rivaldo a settlement to free him up to move in January.

zac i saw your post at milanmania as well and i can tell you you are being too negative about so many things about the team and i personally feel is not right. i have been watching so many milan games that i can safely tell you that this team is better than last year. if the milan from last year play against ancona they would have draw the game. this team is just starting with a few new members on the team. sheva is on form, inzaghi just scored a hattrick with italy our team is just starting to find their feet i am pleased to see how they are playing now. see a few more matchs before being disappointed this is typical of milan. if you don't like how they look then you shouldn't be supporting(or are you?). i am sorry if i sound mean but this is what i think.

Milan chase Samba stars

After capturing San Paolo starlet Kaka’, the Rossoneri are now moving in on two more Brazilian prodigies.

It is reported that transfer guru Leonardo has flown out to speak with two players – Elano and Dagoberto.

The £5.3m signing of Kaka’ now seems like a good deal following his fine Serie A debut, a 2-0 win at Ancona.

With Rivaldo ready to jump ship during the January transfer window, the club can free up a spot for another South American arrival.

The first choice is Elano, the left winger currently starring with club side Santos and already making in-roads to the Selecao.

His presence would perhaps solve the lack of width within the Milan side, especially with Serginho still not 100 per cent fit.

Another option for Carlo Ancelotti’s talent scouts is Atletico Paranaense man Dagoberto.

A support striker with a creative edge, the 22-year-old can drop deeper into midfield when required.

There are several Brazilian youngsters of interest to all the big Serie A clubs, including former Spurs target Diego and 19-year-old Santos striker Robinho.

how to improve a team by pointing out the bad do you think the management will listen to you. if you don't like how the team is playing then don't watch it not like saying this and that will change the facts. demouse you never read him comment on milanmania where he attack pancaro and cafu when they have played well. what kind of supporter is this attacking the team players even when they are performing. i don't wish to pick up a fight or arguement but the fact is give credits when its due and for your info i have watch the match not just read post game comments.

Ancelotti shuffles Milan deck

Carlo Ancelotti is forced into several changes against Bologna, but believes he has finally found the key to beating the small sides.

“Effectively our season really begins this evening,” said the Milan boss ahead of their San Siro debut.

“I hope we can do as well as we did in Serie A last season, reaching the midway point with a tally of 39 points.”

The Rossoneri were the Winter Champions, but faltered in the second half of the campaign, especially when facing the more rugged teams.

“We need to attack the ball further up the field,” insisted the tactician. “My players love playing with the ball to feet, but with a tough opponent like Bologna that isn’t always possible.”

The Rossoblu are Coached by Carlo Mazzone, an old hand at ruining San Siro parties with his organised outfits.

“It is imperative to move off the ball in order to find space. Another weapon at our disposal is the fine form of our strikers.”

The break for international duty has been kind to Milan, as both Andriy Shevchenko and Pippo Inzaghi were on target.

“I was very happy to see Pippo score that hat-trick against Wales, as he hadn’t yet found a goal with Milan and was beginning to get worried.”

The real problems for Ancelotti right now are at the back, as Paolo Maldini is suspended, while Giuseppe Pancaro and Kakha Kaladze are injured.

“I am not worried,” assured the Coach. “We have some very reliable men in our team.”

Danish international Martin Laursen, who also netted in the midweek Euro 2004 qualifiers, steps in to central defence.

The Brazilians are struggling to recover after the long flight from South America, but Marcos Cafu and Kaka’ may feature.

Milan 2 - 1 Bologna
Shevchenko 10 (M), Nervo 32 (B), Inzaghi 85 (M)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Super Pippo Inzaghi came to the rescue with a late winner after Bologna frustrated Milan at the San Siro.

Milan were forced to reshuffle their defence in this home debut. The suspended Paolo Maldini is joined in the stands by injured duo Kakha Kaladze and Giuseppe Pancaro. Brazilians Kaka' and Rivaldo are also rested following international duty.

Bologna have had a little more time to learn Carlo Mazzone's tactics and adopt a 3-5-2 system with Tomas Locatelli in a deeper role. Fausto Rossini is a former Milan man and last year netted with Atalanta in this Stadium.

It took just ten minutes for the Rossoneri to break through with their on form striker Andriy Shevchenko. The Ukrainian had scored both goals in Ancona for their Week 1 victory and rose to nod in an Andrea Pirlo free kick.

Pippo Inzaghi saw penalty appeals rejected when he leaned into a defender and fell in the box.

Milan seemed to be in control, but Clarence Seedorf failed to adequately clear a Beppe Signori free kick and it fell to Carlo Nervo for a stunning equaliser. The winger blasted a great strike in by the far post and Dida's hand was simply not enough to slow its momentum.

Inzaghi scored a hat-trick in this Stadium for last week's 4-0 win over Wales, but he is yet to score in Serie A this season and saw a good chance deflected wide.

Shevchenko almost grabbed a second from a delicate Pirlo cross, but his weak header was straight at the goalkeeper, while Manuel Rui Costa blazed wide from the edge of the box.

Mazzone's Bologna showed no fear and almost shocked Dida in the opening minutes of the second half, the goalkeeper scrambling a long range Sam Dalla Bona effort clear.

Shevchenko wasted another good header on the hour mark, this time providing the power but not the accuracy.

Milan were lacking width and - also with the Champions' League debut against Ajax in mind - replaced Rui Costa and Dario Simic with wide men Serginho and Marcos Cafu. Bologna also introduced Fabio Pecchia and Christian Amoroso.

Inzaghi increased his influence on the game and shook the side netting from close range.

The final half-hour was open to any result as Bologna were dangerous on the counter-attack, while Serginho's cross clipped the top of the crossbar.

Milan needed the victory and threw on third striker Jon Dahl Tomasson for the last ten minutes.

Soon after another looping Shevchenko header was fingertipped over the bar by Gianluca Pagliuca.

The Rossoneri were constantly frustrated by the Bologna defence, but Inzaghi made his mark at the right time. It was a typical Super Pippo strike, battling in between two different defenders with his back to goal to turn and sweep in.

Inzaghi almost grabbed a second moments later when Shevchenko's effort was parried towards him, but the defence scrambled the loose ball clear.

Inzaghi: I surprised myself

Match-winner Filippo Inzaghi cannot explain how he netted in tonight’s 2-1 win over Bologna, but Rivaldo has caused another storm at the San Siro.

“I am very happy to have scored my first Serie A goal of the season,” said the Milan striker, “even if to be honest I’m still not sure how I did it.”

Three Bologna defenders surrounded the Azzurri hero when he turned and squeezed an angled drive past Gianluca Pagliuca.

“We were a little tired,” continued Inzaghi, “as so many internationals here have been playing every few days. Overall we deserved the result as we had so many chances.”

The Rossoneri are currently joint top of the table along with Lazio, who also played this evening, but Carlo Ancelotti is again called to comment on a struggle with a smaller side.

“It was a deserved victory,” insisted the Coach. “We were in control without suffering under Bologna’s counter-attacks.”

The tactician proved decisive by introducing wide men Marcos Cafu and Serginho for the final push.

“When a game is stuck in deadlock you have to try different options. Last year perhaps we were more entertaining, but now Milan have greater consistency upfront.”

The performance was not witnessed by Rivaldo, as the former World Player of the Year walked out of the San Siro.

Tired from the midweek World Cup qualifiers in Brazil, he was not even called up for this game and refused to even sit in the stands.

Following his press interview threatening to leave Milan if he did not get a first team place, it now looks increasingly likely Rivaldo’s Serie A stint is at an end.

There are even unconfirmed reports the former Barcelona star has flown straight back to Brazil.

Milan are reportedly interested in Lille defender Eric Abidal. Abidal is widely admired and is seen as the new 'Lillian Thuram'. However Paris Saint Germain have already had a bid rejected.

A good win although I miss both the live and repeat telecast... Still have no idea how the goals are scored....

But nevertheless, although it's a slim win but I'm glad since Bologna is never an easy opponent to start with...

milan totally dominated the first half and played attrative football at the same time creating a lot of chances with sheva scoring with a header from pirlo freekick. in the second half milan start more slowly and cafu and serginho came in to provide crosses into the area. milan played like a english team which sucks and there were no chances of getting another goal. until luckily one of the cross got past the defenders and reach inzaghi who had his back to goal and surrounded by 3 defenders. he somehow managed to turn them and got a good shot which ended in the net. in the closing minutes milan almost got a third goal after sheva bring the ball from midfield and got a long shot at goal which was blocked by the goalkeeper. the rebound fell to inzaghi but was cleared by a defender before he got a shot.

milan 1-0 ajax

inzaghi scored.

continue with this type of one nil win and i will again be rich come end of season. attacking football from both sides and at end of the day milan just deserved a bit more for the better defense and better attacks.
after this game i just hate ajax. a few of their players seem like spoilt brats. players like Steven Pienaar,Van der Vaart, Ibrahimovic. the worst is van der vaart he seem to be looking for trouble always looking for a fight. such a talent but such a bad attitude.

if you want impressive game then watch other big team vs small team games. impressive is relative, if difference is big between the teams of course it will be impressive. ajax is a big team as they have shown last CL.

it is a good game IMO. both teams are very good with a lot of end to end football.

Serie A Week 3 - 21/9/03 (15.00)
Perugia 1 - 1 Milan
Gattuso 19 (M), Vryzas 31 (P)
Stadio Renato Curi
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Rossoneri are once again held at the Stadio Renato Curi, but perhaps more importantly lose Pippo Inzaghi to whiplash.

Milan have a terrible record in this Stadium and had not won here since 2000, so when Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Giuseppe Pancaro and Kakha Kaladze pulled out with injuries it set off alarm bells. Paolo Maldini played on despite dislocating his little finger midweek, while Brazilian youngster Kaka' was fielded alongside Manuel Rui Costa.

On thirteen minutes Andriy Shevchenko sprinted past Diamoutene on a Rui Costa through ball, but failed to keep his shot down.

Gennaro Gattuso is not known as a goalscorer but he broke the deadlock with a splendid solo effort. The rugged midfielder charged into the box, nutmegged Marco Di Loreto and drilled in by the near post.

Perugia eventually got back into the game with Zisis Vryzas, a man who often nets against the Rossoneri. The Greek international performed a diving header on a precise Ze Maria cross.

The Grifoni grew in confidence after this equaliser and there were penalty appeals for a sliding Maldini challenge on Jay Bothroyd, but the referee waved play on.

Shevchenko looked set to restore Milan's lead just before the break with a looping header, but Zeljko Kalac was at full stretch to fingertip the ball over the bar.

The Ukrainian's bad luck continued, as at the dawn of the second half his fierce drive cannoned off the frame of the goal.

Inzaghi ran into the box and clashed with Kalac on the hour mark. The striker got the worst of it and was stretchered off. Initial reports suggest he suffered whiplash and was taken to hospital wearing a neck brace for further tests.

Milan's day got even worse when Massimo Ambrosini saw red for a late challenge on Fabio Gatti, leaving the reigning European Champions in ten men.

They held on in the final minutes to take home a point in this hard-fought encounter despite late chances for Bothroyd and Ze Maria.

Perugia: Kalac; Alioui, Di Loreto, Diamoutene; Ze Maria, Tedesco, Obodo (Loumpoutis 77), Fusani (Gatti 59), Grosso; Vryzas, Bothroyd (Margiotta 87)

Milan: Dida; Simic, Laursen, Maldini, Costacurta; Rui Costa, Gattuso (Pirlo 53), Ambrosini, Kakà; Shevchenko (Cafu 72), Inzaghi (Tomasson 67)

It was a boring game... Maybe it is exciting in the first 20 mins wre the goals were scored but after that, it is a dull affair... The ball was played almost all the time in the middle of the pitch changing hands between Milan and Perugia...

Milan was struggling thruout the whole game... No clear chances created and no good moves digged out... Even Kaka who has been impressive in his last few match was a bore... In fact, Perugia has more chances than Milan....

Although we are still level on pts with the rest of the leaders but while Milan dropped pts against the weaker team, The leader dropped pts against the top team....
Just like last season...

Ancelotti in Rivaldo pledge

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed reports that Rivaldo has handed in a transfer request.

The Brazilian is rumoured to be wanting a January move away as he continues to struggle to play regularly at the San Siro.

However, Ancelotti today insisted that isn’t the case and maintained that the former Barca player will get his chance.

"Rivaldo is going through a difficult time and that saddens me," he told ‘Radio Anch`io Sport’ on Monday.

"He is working hard and he will have the possibility to play even if it is difficult to do so regularly in a squad like this one.

"Yet he hasn’t asked to be sold. He is a humble man and he will be assisted by us at all times. He will be a protagonist."

The 2002 World Cup winner was again ignored in the 1-1 draw at Perugia on Sunday as Ancelotti decided to field Kaka, 22, instead.

"Kaka has excellent qualities and can be considered as a modern day player," continued the former Juventus boss.

"For what he has shown so far, I would say he has been over valued but he will develop into an important player without a shadow of a doubt.

"He needs to get accustomed to our training schedule but Kaka is a player that is ready for this club despite the fact he is young."

Meanwhile, Ancelotti also praised Gennaro Gattuso after he scored a rare goal against his former club yesterday.

"He is a unique personality," added the tactician. "He is not liked by most opposition fans and is often insulted despite the fact that he is a positive for this sport."

i will encourage him to go, no point wasted his talent at milan. his style doesn't suit milan, he should join a team who play more attacking football

Injury woe for Alex and Pippo

Today’s tests confirm Alex Del Piero is out until November, while Pippo Inzaghi must be sidelined for ten days.

The Juventus captain limped off just 13 minutes into Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Roma at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

An initial diagnosis on the left calf strain suggested he would be ruled out of action for at least a month, but the latest tests prove the situation is even more serious.

It will take roughly two months to fully recover from this injury as the muscle has been torn.

“I hope to give myself a birthday present by returning for the game against Udinese on November 9,” announced the Juve star.

“It is certainly irritating, but I knew the moment I pulled up that I would be a Serie A spectator for quite a while.”

As for the other on-form Italian international, Pippo Inzaghi had quite a scare when he was stretchered off wearing a neck brace at Perugia.

The Milan striker had a suspected whiplash injury after an accidental collision with Grifoni goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac.

He was kept in hospital overnight for observation and tests now confirm he suffered neck and jaw injuries as well as the fracture of a tooth that had to be removed.

Inzaghi must rest for at least eight to ten days before he can resume training, so he will miss the weekend tie with Lecce and the Champions’ League clash with Spaniards Celta Vigo.

This may at last be the opportunity for Rivaldo to be given more room in the Rossoneri line-up.

Serie A Week 4 - 28/9/03 (15.00)
Milan 3 - 0 Lecce
Shevchenko 21, 70 (M), Tomasson 89 (M)
San Siro
--------------------------------------------------------

Andriy Shevchenko's brace swept Lecce aside and helped Milan maintain the Scudetto pace set by early front-runners Roma and Juventus.

Milan welcomed Lecce to the San Siro just days after Rivaldo's surprise decision to tear up his contract. The Brazilian was expected to feature in this game, especially as Pippo Inzaghi is out with a jaw and neck injury, but he stepped on to the field to salute all his former teammates and the fans before kick-off.

Carlo Ancelotti opted for an all-attack formation with Andrea Pirlo, Kaka', Manuel Rui Costa, Andriy Shevchenko and Jon Dahl Tomasson in the same starting eleven. Serginho and Marcos Cafu were also drafted in as full-backs.

Lecce were without star striker Javier Ernesto Chevanton as the Uruguayan is out for a fortnight with a thigh strain. Youngsters Mirko Vucinic and Axel Konan were given the nod.

Rui Costa is yet to score a single Serie A goal for Milan, but he could not have gone closer than the incident on 14 minutes. The Portuguese playmaker swept a splendid shot from the edge of the box that rattled the crossbar with Marco Amelia beaten.

There were penalty appeals when Kaka' ran into the box and appeared to be pushed off the ball, but the referee waved play on.

The pressure increased and Milan eventually broke the deadlock on 21 minutes. Rui Costa was again unlucky when his low drive hit the base of the post, but Marcos Cafu put the ball back into the centre for Shevchenko's finish.

Kaka' was again impressive and his powerful drive whistled past the post soon after.

Lecce began to fight back towards the end of the first half and Axel Konan tested Dida's reflexes. After the break Vucinic frankly should have scored, but he drilled wide from eight yards.

It remained an entertaining game and Tomasson's solo effort brought a tough save out of Amelia before Paolo Maldini looped a header over the bar.

The pressure eventually paid off to make the points safe with Shevchenko again on target. The Ukrainian dribbled past three players as he ran into the box before cutting a slide-rule finish between goalkeeper and near post.

Tomasson completed the rout in the final minute by tapping in from close range, but the credit for the goal must also go to Kaka for a delicate assist that pulled the goalkeeper away from his net.

Milan: Dida; Cafu (Simic 46), Nesta, Maldini, Serginho; Gattuso, Pirlo (Redondo 65), Kakà; Rui Costa (Brocchi 80); Shevchenko, Tomasson

Lecce: Amelia; Siviglia, Silvestri, Stovini; Cassetti (Billy 77), Piangerelli, Ledesma, Budel (Giacomazzi 70), Tonetto; Vucinic, Konan (Bojinov 62)

Rivaldo salutes San Siro

Rivaldo was on the field before today’s match with Lecce to salute his teammates and the Rossoneri fans.

“I came here to say goodbye to my colleagues,” revealed the now ex-Milan star. “I cannot deny that I am very close to the club and have always wanted to play for the great Milan.”

The former Barcelona man is now a free agent after agreeing to tear up his contract on Friday.

“I do regret that I wasn’t able to show this Stadium the real Rivaldo,” he added, “but now is the time to look forward and not back.”

The World Cup winner failed to impress during his 22 Serie A appearances and was further shut out of the first team by the arrival of Kaka’.

“My salute also goes to the fans, who have always supported me and even in the last few days continued to show their respect.”

It now looks increasingly likely the 31-year-old will move to the Premiership following interest from several clubs.

“I think that England is the logical destination for me because I've had so many offers from there that it would be the easiest place to go and succeed.”

The former World Player of the Year also confirmed interest from Middlesbrough and Newcastle United, but insisted he was aiming for higher ground.

“I would love to sign for Chelsea,” he added, “as it would be very easy for me to fit in quickly because there are already so many stars, some of whom I know directly and this would literally, guarantee success.”

However, as the reason he left Milan was in order to play more first team football, the star-studded Stamford Bridge outfit would not solve that problem.

------------------------------------------------------

if possible, think he should go back to spain. there suits him most.

hope to see the best of rivaldo again soon.

The best and the rest.....

The best…
Gennaro Gattuso (Milan)
Chelsea’s Claude Makelele is a dwarf compared to today’s Gennaro Gattuso. Even Edgar Davids hasn’t got the spark which the Milan man has. Gattuso retrieves balls in every corner of the pitch and has made incredible progress in recent seasons. He deserves the appreciation that the Rossoneri fans illustrate every time he touches the ball.

Gianluca Zambrotta (Juventus)
He’s the best left-back in circulation. An immense athlete, Zambrotta is also catching the eye for his tactical sense of positioning. It is as if he’s been a defender for all of his life. Last year we criticised Marcello Lippi for ‘robbing’ Italian football of a winger but the tactician seems to have been proved right.

Daniele De Rossi (Roma)
His piece of skill, just before he crossed the ball for Walter Samuel to open the scoring against Parma, was a joy to watch. He controlled the ball as if he was Diego Maradona, he moved away from the defender as if he was Thierry Henry. This boy will go a long way, even if talk of a call-up for Euro 2004 may be too premature. He’s now a first team regular with Roma in Serie A at the age of 20. That says everything.

The rest…
Fabio Cannavaro (Inter)
Inter decided to keep him in the summer instead of buying Cristian Chivu from Ajax. But we are still waiting to see the very best from the Italian defender. He was beaten far too easily by Andrea Caracciolo, who is no Ruud Van Nistelrooy, at Brescia on Saturday.

Dejan Stankovic (Lazio)
He’s undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in circulation but he is not making the difference for his team this season. A player of his ability should really be more instrumental than he was against Milan on Sunday.

Francesco Toldo (Inter)
Everyone makes mistakes but Francesco Toldo has made a few in recent weeks. He doesn’t seem secure between the sticks anymore and he was at fault for gifting Roberto Baggio the opener in the 2-2 draw at Brescia. A player of his quality and experience should really know better.

Puglisi, the strange coincidences of the Devil's linesman

Puglisi should have been suspended 2 months for calling Parma's player Appiah "nigger". An incident which prevented him from representing Italy in the 2002 World Cup, instead of him went and triumphed his friend and colleague Collina. Puglisi had his luggage ready but was stopped on his tracks even though he was cleared at the preliminary stage at the disciplinary hearing;it was the Federal procurator which condemned him.

During this championship(2002/2003) Puglisi was linesman in 4 games - against Modena, Atalanta, Inter and Roma - and Milan won all 4 of them. The striking fact is that the great Puglisi was never designated for a Juventus game! How come that the two designators, Bergamo and Pairetto(there are no draws for the linesmen) never ever designated him for Lippi's team? Also, the linesman is an owner of an agency in his home town called Puglisi Assicurazioni Ras. Is it not a coincidence that Ras is one of Milan's sponsors? Ad it is also pure coincidence that the player which accused him of caling Appiah "nigger *******" was Sartor, then of Parma, now romanista?

Another coincidence, in february 2000 after a turbulent Milan-Lazio at San Siro all kinds of things were happening in the dressing room between Mancini and Galliani. But the fourth official saw nothing and the milan vicepresident escaped punishment. No need to say who was that official. And how is itpossible to omit another coincidence on 9th of May that same year during a Milan - Roma game: a ridiculous penalty given to milan by Trentalange and a goal scored by Schevchenko, Roma out of the CL and a furious argument that Capello had with a linesman. "I accept everything but not insults hurled at me. From nobody. I protested, it was my first protest, at a decision by Trentalange after the goal from Zago and this gentleman, who is not new to such things yelled at me:I'll banish you to the locker room.I don't accept that." told Capello during the post match conference. It was naturally only a coincidence that the linesman was mr. Puglisi from Voghera. Or was it?

Or was it?

Champions' League Phase One, Gp H - 22/10/03
Milan 0 - 1 Club Brugge
Mendoza 32 (B)
San Siro
-------------------------------------------------------

The reigning European Champions were shocked at the San Siro by Belgians Club Brugge.

Milan were expected to field Manuel Rui Costa in the same midfield line-up with Kaka', but Coach Carlo Ancelotti opted to play the young Brazilian in the driving seat. Gennaro Gattuso is suspended and Massimo Ambrosini injured, so Christian Brocchi was drafted in to act as the midfield battler.

The Rossoneri had a good start and a desperate B Martens intervention prevented Kaka' making the most of a good Clarence Seedorf assist after just four minutes.

Pippo Inzaghi saw an early goal disallowed for an offside position, but the flag was raised incorrectly for another chance during the opening 15 minutes.

Inzaghi was lively and ran on to a wonderful Marcos Cafu through ball, but failed to keep his shot down as the goalkeeper ran out to narrow the angle.

The pressure on the Belgian goal increased as Andrea Pirlo blasted a powerful effort inches over the bar.

However, Bruges tried to take advantage of the counter-attack and Dida punched away a De Coeck shot.

It was a warning sign and on 32 minutes the Belgians took a shock lead with Mendoza. The South American sprung the offside trap out wide on the left and drilled an unstoppable drive with the outside of his left foot into the far corner.

Milan poured forward with even more vehemance in search of an equaliser, Seedorf's fierce effort skimming the woodwork, but this left even more room to counter-attack in.

Ancelotti's men came out for the second half with all guns blazing and goalkeeper Verlinden performed a magnificent save on Pirlo's free kick.

Soon after Inzaghi somehow ballooned over from less than six yards after a corner kick was floated into the box.

The disappointing Seedorf then found space, but saw his effort fingertipped over the bar, while Andriy Shevchenko fired over from close range.

Ancelotti made changes and introduced Serginho and Manuel Rui Costa to introduce some more creativity.

The Portuguese international created a good chance within seconds of taking the field, but his chip was fingertipped over.

There was controversy on 64 minutes when Inzaghi fell under pressure from a defender, but the referee awarded Bruges a free kick for an offside position.

The five-man Belgian defence held on well and Jon Dahl Tomasson was the final gamble to replace a disappointing Shevchenko.

However, the Dane fired a horrible finish over the bar from the edge of the box.

In fact, Bruges substitute Saeternes almost netted a second for the visitors when his angled drive skimmed the far post.

Belgian goalkeeper Verlinden had a great performance and punched out another dipping long-range Rui Costa effort as it turned into a siege, but it was all to no avail.

Milan: Dida; Cafu, Nesta, Maldini, Pancaro; Brocchi, Pirlo, Seedorf (Serginho 61), Kakà (Rui Costa 61); Shevchenko (Tomasson 76), Inzaghi

Club Brugge: Verlinden; De Coeck, Clement, B Martens, Van Der Heyden, Rozehnal; Simons, Ceh (Stoica 92); Gvozdenovic, Mendoza (Saeternes 78), S Martens (Verheyen 78)

Rui Costa going nowhere

Manuel Rui Costa maintains he is happy at Milan despite reports that he could be on the verge of being sold.

The Portuguese ace was again left on the bench for the Brugge game last night as boss Carlo Ancelotti kept faith with Brazilian star Kaka.

"Obviously it is only logical that I wasn’t happy with being left out but when I went on to the field I gave it my all," he said.

"I’m just working hard and I’m not about to give up. It is normal for there to be strong competition for places at a club like this one."

The former Fiorentina star also dismissed speculation that he has a problem with Coach Ancelotti.

"That’s not true," he continued. "I’ve never been one to cause problems within a squad and I’m not about to start now."

Reports on Thursday suggested that Rui Costa could soon be on his way out of the club if he continued to be ignored.

With former club Benfica, Barcelona and Liverpool all believed to be interested in his services.

There are also rumours circulating today that Inter rejected the chance to sign the playmaker in the past.

Milan apparently offered him to Inter in exchange for Clarence Seedorf. Then boss Hector Cuper allegedly turned him down and Francesco Coco joined the Nerazzurri instead.

Inzaghi sits out Samp game

Pippo Inzaghi and Rivaldo will not step on to the field against Sampdoria this Sunday after picking up injury worries.

The Italian international was set to start at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, but pulled a right thigh muscle during the final training session.

Club doctors suggest he stay on at the Milanello camp to perform specialist exercises and physiotherapy.

Rivaldo is also out of action for the trip to Genoa after suffering yet another muscular problem.

The Brazilian has barely featured for the Rossoneri this season due to a series of setbacks.

Therefore it is likely that Danish World Cup star Jon Dahl Tomasson will start alongside Andriy Shevchenko tomorrow afternoon.

There are also reports that Kaka’ will be partnered by Manuel Rui Costa in a more creative midfield after the Portuguese hero was left on the bench for the midweek defeat to Club Brugge.

Ancelotti calls for 'real' Milan

Carlo Ancelotti has urged his side to beat Sampdoria with a show of force in order to silence the doubters.

“I think the defeat to Club Brugge was merely a blip,” insisted the Milan Coach, “but this next game will be the test of that theory.”

The Rossoneri are the reigning European Champions, but have always struggled to see off the smaller sides.

“Our first disappointing performance of the season was the 0-0 at Celta Vigo, but we must ensure this is just a worrying moment rather than a trend.”

Sampdoria have won only once so far this season despite their star-studded squad that includes ex-Milan men Massimo Donati and Francesco Antonioli.

“The Blucerchiati have always played well against the big teams and deserve more points than they have. This is an organised squad that will close down all the spaces, so we must learn to create that extra room.”

Much has been said on Ancelotti’s recent decisions, in particular leaving Manuel Rui Costa on the bench in favour of youngster Kaka’.

“I fielded the same men against Bruges as those who had beaten Inter and Lazio because they had played well and looked fit,” he explained.

“Some players are tired and will therefore be rested for this trip to Genoa. Rivaldo and Pippo Inzaghi have not been called as they are struggling with muscular injuries.”

Stadio Marassi

----------------------------------------------------

Milan must win in order to stay level with Juventus at the top of the table and face a tricky trip to Marassi.

The Rossoneri are one of only three teams to remain unbeaten so far this season, but have struggled somewhat outside the San Siro. Held to a 1-1 draw by Perugia and struggling to see off Ancona, so this will be a real test of their title ambitions.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side has always found life difficult against the smaller clubs and must turn that trend around if he is to take the Serie A crown. The team could still be affected by the controversy surrounding their 1-0 win over Lazio and their midweek Champions’ League test with Club Brugge. Kakha Kaladze, Massimo Ambrosini and Rivaldo are doubts for this game due to minor injury worries, but Manuel Rui Costa may find his way back into the side in place of Kaka’.

Sampdoria are slowly but surely making their way up the standings with a series of improving results. Last week’s 1-1 draw at Chievo proved they are an organised set-up with a wild card in attacking winger Aimo Diana. The former Reggina man is their second top scorer with two goals and his prowess from distance make him a danger for the Milan defence. Fabio Bazzani and Francesco Flachi should be the starting strikers, although Massimo Marazzina has recovered from an injury to battle for his place.

----------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria (probable): Antonioli; Sacchetti, Carrozzieri, Falcone, Bettarini; Diana, Palombo, Volpi, Doni; Flachi, Bazzani

Milan (probable): Dida; Simic, Nesta, Maldini, Pancaro; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf; Rui Costa; Shevchenko, Inzaghi

Tomasson rejects Bologna talk

Milan forward Jon Dahl Tomasson has dismissed speculation that he is on the verge of a move to Bologna.

"I think I’ve already been sold around 15 times this season according to the newspapers," said the Dane.

"Let me say it again, I’m very happy at Milan. I’m not joining Bologna or any other club in the near future.

"I’ve already scored twice in the League and I just want to be ready when boss Carlo Ancelotti needs me."

Although the Dane scored in the 3-0 win over Samp yesterday, he has never maintained a regular first team shirt at Milan.

He joined the Italian giants on a free transfer from Feyenoord after the 2002 World Cup Finals.

Maldini after significant win

A win against Juventus on Saturday would be worth more than just three points according to Milan ace Paolo Maldini.

"We are playing for first place in Serie A but the game will be much more important for the mind," said the legend.

"Whoever wins will acquire a feeling of superiority over the defeated side even if in reality that may not be the case.

"This is a clash that could boost morale for the winner because beating your nearest rival will convince you of the strength of your team."

Maldini, who is set to play in his 720th game for the Rossoneri, will also come up against his Golden Ball rival Pavel Nedved.

"It is a race that I would be delighted to win," he continued. "However, if I’m not named the European Footballer of the Year then I’ll get over it.

"Especially as a few days later I will be playing in the Intercontinental Final against Boca Juniors.

"Winning trophies with my teammates are my real objectives. Targets that can be reached with our performances on the field of play."

Meanwhile, teammate Andrea Pirlo feels that next week’s game against Brugges is more crucial than the Juve tie.

"Our Champions’ League game in Belgium is more delicate after they beat us at the San Siro," stated the Italian.

"But we must try to delay any thoughts about the European Cup tie until after the game against Juventus."

Milan track attacking duo

Italian giants Milan have revealed the names of two strikers who they are keeping a close eye on.

The Rossoneri have been linked with Luis Fabiano plus Fabio Bazzani in recent months and Vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed Milan’s interest.

"Fabiano isn’t a specific target but we are following his progress in Brazil," stated the San Siro chief.

"While I really like Bazzani after his performances this season," he added. "He’s a real Milan fan too."

Fabiano is a 23-year-old striker who is catching the eye in South America with Sao Paulo. He’s also been linked with Inter.

As for Bazzani, he’s made an excellent start to the season with Samp. The 27-year-old first hit the headlines in Italy with Perugia.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras are being associated with a January swoop for the unsettled Rivaldo (pictured).

The Brazilian, who has won two League titles and a Coppa Libertadores with the club in the past, is set to leave Milan in January after failing to break into the first team.

Serie A Week 8 - 1/11/03 (20.30)
Milan 1 - 1 Juventus
Tomasson 66 (M), Di Vaio 84 (J)
San Siro
-----------------------------------------------------

A stunning Marco Di Vaio strike cancelled out Jon Dahl Tomasson's goal as Milan and Juve remain locked at the top.

These two teams fought for the Champions' League and Italian Supercup over the last few months, but now find themselves battling for the top of the Serie A table. Joint leaders going into this game, both clubs had scored in every single round and were unbeaten.

There were injury worries for both outfits, as Alessandro Del Piero and Pippo Inzaghi did not even make the bench. Andriy Shevchenko has a good record of scoring against the Bianconeri, while Pavel Nedved had the opportunity of facing Milan after missing the Champions' League Final due to a ban.

Manuel Rui Costa was given the nod ahead of Kaka', while Serginho retained his left-back position. Bizarrely, the kick-off was delayed by ten minutes due to a traffic jam outside the Stadium that caught the Juventus team bus.

Juventus had the first shot on goal after four minutes with a fierce Nedved piledriver palmed out for a corner kick. Marco Di Vaio then failed to take full advantage of a defensive error, while Serginho's brave intervention prevented David Trezeguet taking a free header.

Milan slowly gained more of a grip on the game after a strong Juve start and Gianluigi Buffon controlled a Gennaro Gattuso drive from almost 30 metres, then the Italian Number 1 punched a dangerous ball off Shevchenko's head.

The tension was high between these old rivals and a scuffle broke out between Dario Simic and Trezeguet with an apparent elbow from the Frenchman.

Another more determined fight exploded before the break when Milan carried on playing despite the fact Nedved was on the ground at the other end of the field. At least ten players were involved in the brawl and Buffon was forced to hold a livid Maldini back.

Shevchenko skipped past Paolo Montero and placed a slide-rule pass in to the centre, but Stephan Appiah was able to clear before a teammate could pounce.

Despite the tension, the first yellow card fell to Gianluca Zambrotta for a foul from behind on Serginho on 50 minutes.

The Rossoneri went close when a Serginho cross was fingertipped off Shevchenko's head from close range.

The strain on the field rose further when Shevcheko hit the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a very tight offside decision.

Moments later Montero was forced into a desperate challenge on Gattuso as he strode into the six-yard box.

But Juventus went even closer to an opening goal on 56 minutes when Di Vaio volleyed a deflected Camoranesi cross on to the near post with Dida beaten.

The Brazilian goalkeeper then performed a great reaction save to palm away Trezeguet's shot from eight yards.

Milan fought back immediately and a Serginho cross caused havoc with Shevchenko and Rui Costa unable to get a solid touch on it.

A clearly unhappy Clarence Seedorf was substituted by Massimo Ambrosini.

Mere seconds later Milan took the lead through Jon Dahl Tomasson. The Juve defence tried to play the offside trap on a corner kick, but failed to notice Pirlo's through ball to the unmarked Tomasson from nine yards. Replays suggest that Camoranesi was the man keeping his opponents onside.

The Dane, who was only on the field due to Inzaghi's thigh injury, also netted in last week's 3-0 win over Sampdoria.

Juve poured forward in search of an equaliser and Di Vaio thought he had it with a free header at the back post, but Dida performed one of the best saves of his career to palm it out.

Marcello Lippi threw on Fabrizio Miccoli, while Milan turned to a 4-4-2 with Serginho in his habitual more advanced position and Kaka' partnering Shevchenko upfront.

Juventus found their equaliser and it was well worth the wait. Di Vaio unleashed a simply unstoppable volley from 20 metres that slotted into the top corner beyond Dida's outstretched hand. There was also some fine set-up work by Trezeguet to lift the ball up for the ex-Parma player's left foot.

There was bad news in the final minutes for both teams. Serginho and Enzo Maresca seemed to sprain ankles during awkward falls, but the Juventus midfielder appeared to have the worst injury.

Milan: Dida; Simic, Maldini, Nesta, Serginho; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf (Ambrosini 64); Rui Costa (Kaka' 77); Tomasson (Pancaro 74), Shevchenko

Opinion: The best and the rest

The best…
Christian Vieri (Inter)
Christian Vieri got back on the scoresheet against Chievo last night to put his poor form behind him. Heckled by his own fans last week, he proved that if the quality of service to him is good then he will put the ball away. He’s on the up which is good news for Inter and Italy.

Nelson Dida (Milan)
He was undoubtedly the man of the match in the 1-1 draw with Juventus. He didn’t make one mistake all night and made two outstanding saves to deny Juventus all three points. He was a joy to watch from the stands.

Marco Di Vaio (Juventus)
What a goal! He’s often said in the past that he wants to prove to people that he deserves to be at Juventus and that volley against Milan has left few doubts. He’s now a top quality striker, one who’s diagonal runs and powerful shots consistently cause havoc.

The rest…
Stephen Appiah (Juventus)
He didn’t play badly against Milan but that was the kind of game where the dynamism of Edgar Davids may have been more suited. Appiah did his job but the Dutchman, left on the bench, could have offered more.

David Trezeguet (Juventus)
Trezeguet had a poor game against Milan. The Juventus system may leave him isolated at times but he didn’t look world class at the San Siro. His elbow on Dario Simic was also a disgrace. He should have seen red.

Morgan De Sanctis (Udinese)
The goalkeeper’s error against Lazio gifted the away side the maximum three points. Despite signing a new contract last week, these are tough times for the No 1. Maybe he should stop trying to impress so much. After all, none of the big clubs are looking for a new ‘keeper.

Serie A Week 9 - 9/11/03
Parma-Milan
9 Nov, Sun @ 09:55pm - Ch 22 LIVE
Stadio Tardini
--------------------------------------------------

Fourth-placed Parma could not ask for a tougher tie as they bid to prove they can perform even without star striker Adriano.

Leaders Milan will be thanking their lucky stars that the Brazilian tore a thigh muscle during the 3-2 win at Brescia last week, effectively ruling him out until the New Year. Adriano netted almost half of all their goals in the League this season and his absence may even force a change of tactics.

The keys to the Parma attack are handed to Alberto Gilardino, an Under-21 international who has made a good impression in his few substitute appearances. If the youngster can pierce through Serie A’s second meanest defence then it will put his name firmly on the map. The problems don’t stop there for the Gialloblu, as central midfielders Manuele Blasi and Marco Donadel are suspended. The return from a two-match ban of Emanuele Filippini could not have been timed better as he slots in beside Simone Barone.

Milan must win to ensure they stay top of the table, particularly with a relatively simple task for Juventus this weekend. Their record at the Tardini is not particularly impressive, winning just once in their last nine trips to this Stadium. There is still ill feeling over last year’s 1-0 home victory, as Pippo Inzaghi saw a late goal incorrectly disallowed for offside following Adriano’s winner. That result effectively ended Milan’s Scudetto hopes.

Question marks remain over the fitness levels of Inzaghi, who has missed the last two Serie A ties with a muscular problem, while Paolo Maldini is out after suffering a thigh strain during the 1-0 win in Bruges. It has been a bad week for Brazilians, as Serginho was also ruled out until January at the earliest after damaging ankle ligaments. Jon Dahl Tomasson was on target in that 1-1 draw against Juventus and will retain his place alongside Andriy Shevchenko. Manuel Rui Costa should again win the battle with Kaka’, while Giuseppe Pancaro steps in to the left-back position.

Rui Costa linked with exit

Manuel Rui Costa is being tipped to leave Milan in the summer if he finally gets his hands on Lo Scudetto.

The 31-year-old has been in Italy since his move to Fiorentina in 1994 but he has yet to collect the elusive Serie A championship.

Having won the Champions’ League and the Coppa Italia last season, the Portuguese star is desperate for the title before he ends his Italian stint.

The playmaker went close to winning the League with the Viola under the guidance of Giovanni Trapattoni in 1999, but their title challenge faded after an injury to Gabriel Batistuta.

Now reports suggest that Rui Costa will return to former club Benfica at the end of term if Milan conclude the season as champions.

The Rossoneri are believed to be willing to sell the player after the emergence of 21-year-old Brazilian sensation Kaka.

Rui Costa has also been associated with moves to Barcelona and Liverpool in recent months.

The Premiership side could also be the January destination of Milan flop Rivaldo after he confirmed negotiations had taken place.

Alex to replace Rivaldo

Milan have already found the replacement for Rivaldo as an offer is tabled for fellow Brazilian Alex.

Rossoneri director Ariedo Braida has been in South America all week to discuss future deals and has seemingly sewn up an agreement with Santos.

Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa is 21 years old and already a crucial element of the team in central defence.

Several big clubs are trailing the young talent, but Milan have reportedly bagged the deal for around £5m.

In order to sign the Brazilian they must first sell another non-EU player and Rivaldo already has his bags packed.

“This has been the worst year of my career,” confessed the former Barcelona star and current San Siro benchwarmer.

“At this stage all I can do is wait for January to arrive. I have had talks with Liverpool, but I cannot say more than that.”

Meanwhile, Milan are also tracking another mid-season target after new tests confirmed Serginho will be out until the New Year with ruptured ankle ligaments.

Perugia wide man Fabio Grosso has impressed this season and earned his third Italy cap against Poland midweek.

It is possible the Grifoni will let him go in January despite their difficult start to the campaign.

Chievo 0 - 2 Milan
Shevchenko 45, 50 (M)
Stadio Bentegodi
------------------------------------------------

Andriy Shevchenko celebrated his 100th official goal for the club as Milan finally beat their Stadio Bentegodi taboo.

Milan needed a win here to maintain the title pace set by Juventus and Roma, but they had never before taken all three points from the Stadio Bentegodi. Chievo have earned a 3-2 victory and a 1-1 draw during their previous encounters here, but the Rossoneri did run out 5-2 winners in last year's Coppa Italia.

Brazilians Kaka' and Marcos Cafu were rested following their 2006 World Cup qualifiers in South America, while Jon Dahl Tomasson stepped in for the not 100 per cent fit Pippo Inzaghi. There were problems in defence with Paolo Maldini, Kakha Kaladze and Dario Simic all out of action.

Chievo had an aggressive start and Salvatore Lanna had the first shot on goal after four minutes.

Milan slowly began to settle in to the match and fans thought Manuel Rui Costa had finally scored his first goal for the club, but his fierce drive was fingertipped inches wide of the post.

Massimo Ambrosini then whistled a powerful effort wide from almost 30 metres, while goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani charged off his line to block an Andriy Shevchenko counter-attack.

There was controversy before the break when Chievo Coach Gigi Del Neri was sent off for dissent.

Milan were threatening a goal and it eventually came in first half stoppage time. Gennaro Gattuso swept a fine cross into the centre for an Andriy Shevchenko free header. The Ukrainian has now celebrated his 100th official goal in a Rossoneri jersey.

At the dawn of the second half Shevchenko made it two when he sprung the offside trap on a Rui Costa pass and slammed in at the near post. Chievo claimed that the goal should have been disallowed, but Fabio Moro appeared to be keeping several players onside.

Mario Alberto Santana was unable to start due to a thigh problem, but tried to introduce some creativity in the second half along with Under-21 international Giuseppe Sculli.

Milan thought they had earned a third on the hour mark when Rui Costa set up Tomasson, but the Dane's effort cannoned off the crossbar and back out with the goalkeeper beaten.

The Rossoneri dominated and Tomasson was clear on goal when he was dragged back by Salvatore Lanna. The captain was only booked as another defender was close by.

Clarence Seedorf replaced Shevchenko and with his first touch brought a tough save out of Marchegiani, aiming his powerful drive from over 30 metres. Carlo Ancelotti gave Under-21 international hitman Marco Borriello a rare outing in the final five minutes.

Chievo's first shot on goal was in the 86th minute, Amauri's low drive bringing a comfortable save out of Dida. Soon after he blocked a header from the young Brazilian.

------------------------------------------------

Chievo: Marchegiani; Moro, Sala, Barzagli, Lanna; Morrone, Perrotta, Baronio (Sculli 55), De Franceschi (Santana 52); Pellissier (Pinilla 71), Amauri

Milan: Dida; Costacurta, Nesta, Laursen, Pancaro; Gattuso, Pirlo (Redondo 83), Rui Costa, Ambrosini; Shevchenko (Seedorf 74), Tomasson (Borriello 85)

Ancelotti praises Milan control

Carlo Ancelotti was content with the performance that crushed Chievo 2-0 and kept Milan in the title race.

“We took control of the game and kept a firm hand on it throughout,” assured the tactician.

“Chievo constantly tried to play the long ball game, and that is simply not our ideal style. We played the ball to feet and were in charge of the encounter.”

There were reports that Dida would be left on the bench with the other Brazilians, but the goalkeeper was given the nod despite suffering from jet lag.

“I understand that Christian Abbiati is not happy at spending so much time on the bench,” conceded Ancelotti, “but there is nothing I can do about that.”

“The rotation system must be evaluated for every match based on the fitness of your players at that precise moment. We do not change players just for the sake of it.”

Andriy Shevchenko’s brace decided tonight’s clash with Chievo, but he is concentrating only on Milan’s progress.

“Scoring goals is important for me,” he noted after surpassing his first Century in official games with the Rossoneri jersey, “but they only truly count when the team wins.”

The Ukrainian was able to celebrate on both counts following the 2-0 victory at the Bentegodi, the first time Milan have ever won a Serie A match here.

“It was a very difficult game,” added the striker. “Apart from Chievo’s abilities, it wasn’t easy to play knowing that Juventus, Roma and Inter had picked up such resounding victories earlier this weekend.”

“Now that this victory has boosted our confidence we can concentrate on the upcoming trip to Ajax,” he concluded.

Milan transfer plans uncovered

Milan director general Ariedo Braida has revealed which players his club may swoop for in the future.

The Rossoneri have been linked with a host of individuals in recent months and Braida has surprisingly put the record straight.

"We are keeping a very close eye on two Brazilians," he told the Italian weekly ‘Controcampo’ on Monday.

"The first is Sao Paulo striker Luis Fabiano and the other is Alex, a central defender who plays for Santos.

"Fabiano is a tall target man, similar in style to Christian Vieri, but I want to see a bit more of him first."

The Champions’ League winners have also been linked with Stuttgart forward Kevin Kuranyi and Fernando Torres of Atletico Madrid.

"The German is very fashionable at the moment," he remarked. "As for Torres, he is too expensive.

"The past has also shown that Spaniards don’t tend to do that well away from their own country."

Meanwhile, reports that Anderlecht ace Walter Baseggio is on his way to Inter are becoming more concrete.

"I dream about playing in Italy," said the 25-year-old. "Therefore I’m delighted that Inter are keen on me.

"I’ve spoken to Enzo Scifo (formerly of Inter and Torino) who told me of the pressure in Serie A but I think I’m strong enough to emerge."

Rivaldo and Maldini back

Rivaldo and Paolo Maldini have been included in the Milan squad for Wednesday’s game at Ajax.

The defender returns after a thigh injury, while Rivaldo is one of the 22 despite only returning to Italy on Sunday from Brazil.

The recovery of Maldini is of particularly relief to boss Carlo Ancelotti as Alessandro Nesta is suspended.

The European champions will also still be without Kakha Kaladze and Serginho because of injury.

The Rossoneri will be looking for a win in Amsterdam which could ensure them safe passage to the last 16 knockout phase of the Champions’ League.

Goalkeepers: Abbiati, Dida, Fiori.

Defenders: Cafu, Costacurta, Laursen, Maldini, Pancaro, Simic.

Midfielders: Ambrosini, Brocchi, Gattuso, Kaka, Pirlo, Redondo, Rivaldo, Rui Costa, Seedorf.

Forwards: Borriello, Inzaghi, Shevchenko, Tomasson.

Serie A Week 10: Best Eleven Of The Week

Luca Bucci (Empoli) - Two great saves on efforts by young Rosina were vital in securing the Tuscans their first win of the season.

Martin Laursen (AC Milan) - Starts and then stars in the stadium in which he began his Serie A career in.

Fabio Cannavaro (Inter) - His 30 meter blast gave an extremely important lead to Inter, who up till then were having problems threatening Reggina. Then, the show was able to begin.

Lorenzo Stovini (Lecce) - A completely different player from the one that enormously struggled in the early part of the season.

Ze Maria (Perugia) - The Grifoni's Brazlian wing was a constant thorn in the side of the Lazio defense. Unfortunately his team-mates ruined his majestic match.

Andy van der Meyde (Inter) - Holland's Euro 2004 qualification returned a new Van der Meyde to the Serie A, hopefully the real one.

Olivier Dacourt (AS Roma) - Playing at his best levels since his arrived to Roma last winter.

Pavel Nedved (Juventus) - Can't remember the last time he played badly. A regular guest in our weekly best eleven.

Francesco Totti (AS Roma) - The yellow and red skipper opened the scoring in Bologna with his first goal in almost two months. It was a beauty that propels him back into contention for the Ballon D'Or.

Obafemi Martins (Inter) - His slalom in between the Reggina defenders and his successive winning strike is something to remember.

Andriy Shevchenko (AC Milan) - His Chievo brace clinched his 100th and 101st Serie A goals. Many more to come…

Carlo Ancelotti thanked city rivals Inter for the win they achieved over Juventus yesterday, but added that if Milan are first it's mainly thanks to what his team did up until now.

"Inter's result was fundamental, but I wouldn't like people to think we are first thanks to them. Our points belong entirely to us, one after the other," said Ancelotti.

The Milan coach then complimented Andrea Pirlo, author of another fantastic match.

"I already said that in his role, he's the best in the world. Did you see what pass he made to Sheva for our first goal?," he said.

Brescia vs Milan Preview
LIVE on SCV Ch22, 19 Jan, Mon @ 03:25am
Stadio Rigamonti
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The stage is set for a shock result as Roberto Baggio’s giant-killers take on a Milan side with the strongest away record in Serie A.

This will be the Divine Ponytail’s last season due to the fitness problems which continue to plague his career. Baggio was a doubt to feature against Lazio last week with a muscular injury, but was able to start and proved decisive in that 1-0 victory. That was the first time in 35 years that they had conquered the Capital, but goalscorer Gigi Di Biagio will miss this match through suspension, so Martinez steps into that defensive role.

Baggio spent a brief and unsuccessful period of his career with the Milan shirt on his back, one of many difficult experiences with the big clubs. The veteran seems more at ease with provincial sides such as Brescia and is determined to score those final two goals that will take his Serie A tally to 200.

Milan must win this encounter in order to have a chance of catching Roma in the race to be Winter Champions. This is the final round of ties in the opening half of the season, although Carlo Ancelotti’s men still have a game in hand with Siena to be played on January 28.

The Rossoneri had quite a shock when Reggina’s aggressive start saw them go 1-0 behind at the San Siro last week, but a Kaka’ brace and Andrea Pirlo penalty ensured the 3-1 victory. Pippo Inzaghi’s injury has forced Ancelotti into adopting a lone striker system with the Brazilian backing up Andriy Shevchenko and support is provided by Manuel Rui Costa. Alessandro Nesta is recovering from knee surgery and could make his comeback in this encounter.

Anything could happen at the Stadio Rigamonti, as Brescia are unbeaten in five games, while Milan have the best away record in Serie A thanks to six wins and two draws. In that time the European Champions have netted an impressive 14 goals and conceded just three.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Brescia (probable): Agliardi; Martinez, Petruzzi, Dainelli, Mauri; Filippini, Brighi, Matuzalem, Bachini; Baggio, Caracciolo

Milan (probable): Dida; Costacurta, Nesta, Maldini, Pancaro; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf; Rui Costa, Kaka’; Shevchenko

Nesta wary of Brescia threat

Alessandro Nesta reveals how he is dealing with the return from six weeks on the sidelines, but warns his Milan risk a slip at on-form Brescia.

“I was a little tired after the Coppa Italia game midweek,” said the defender after making his comeback in the 2-1 win over Roma.

“Obviously the knee surgery and this long lay-off has affected my overall match fitness, but to be honest I thought it would be worse.”

The Italian international had been out of action since undergoing an operation in early December and missed out on the Intercontinental Cup.

The Rossoneri have managed to maintain one of the strongest defences in Serie A without him, but face a tricky trip to Brescia this Sunday evening.

“We will be playing against a team that is on fine form and we cannot afford any slip-ups,” he explained.

“It will be a tough game, as the Rondinelle have always given us problems in the past. The fact that Gigi Di Biagio is suspended is a bonus for us.”

All eyes will be on Roberto Baggio, as the Divine Ponytail aims for his 200th Serie A goal against his former club.

“Meeting Baggio is always a great pleasure and honour,” insisted Nesta. “Other than being a legendary player, he is also a good man.”

The two will no doubt clash at the Stadio Rigamonti, but the former Lazio man was also called to answer a bizarre transfer rumour linking Christian Vieri to Milan.

“I think that is pure fantasy football,” he smiled. “We have so many great strikers here that I doubt the club is looking for any more.”

If I had to give an award for the best team in Europe so far it has got to be AC Milan. Last season their performances may have been more spectacular than this year, but there is a consistency and confidence of Carlos Ancelotti's side that must be respected. Their Champions' League campaign was by no means perfect, and they did lose the World Club Cup to Boca on penalties (in a match they had the slight better of), but they are on course to capture the three major competitions they are in (Serie A, Champions' League, and the Coppa Italia). They looked good against Roma in midweek dumping Capello and co. out of the Coppa, and also had an exhilarating final 20 minutes on Sunday against Ancona by scoring five goals in that time to come through with an emphatic victory. Last season they started off fast and then came down to earth though they still captured the CL. What can you say about this season then? They begun relatively slowly and now seem to be getting stronger as the season carries on. I don't imagine any side even the Manchesters and Reals will fancy going up against this Milan.

01/27/2004. Background

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti must be the happiest man in Italian football.

On Sunday, only a few days after his team beat Fabio Capello's Roma for the third time in the space of a month, he watched them destroy Nedo Sonetti's Ancona 5-0 at the San Siro Stadium.

Then Ancelotti received the Golden Bench Award the following day for being the best coach in Italy last season.

With so many good things having happened to him and his side since Christmas, it only seems right that the three points they are likely to take from this Wednesday night's game propel them to the top of the table, two points clear of Roma.

Nervous is how Siena coach Giuseppe Papadopulo will be feeling in the lead-up to this clash at the San Siro Stadium.

Because there will be nothing that he or his players can do to stop their hosts from running away with the game.

Though the visitors might restore some of their lost pride on Sunday afternoon, when they take on Alberto Zaccheroni's Inter Milan at the same ground.

They could gain from that encounter as Inter are such an unpredictable outfit.

But the same things can not be said for their midweek clash with Milan.

Latest News

Milan: If anyone else should feel chuffed at the San Siro Stadium, it should be Rui Costa.

The talented midfielder finally scored on the weekend after 66 games for the rossoneri.

"I hope I do not have to wait so long for my next goal," he said.

"Perhaps things will now be better for me in the box."

If they are not, though, Rui Costa probably will not be disappointed.

Because he sees his job as helping the side with good performances, which does not necessarily include regular goal-scoring.

Milan are chock-full of players who express such sentiments and back them up with corresponding actions, so they will be able to manage another week without Ambrosini.

The stylish midfielder is expected to miss three games through a muscle strain he picked up in his right leg during his side's recent Coppa Italia clash with Roma.

Siena: Two new Brazilian signings this week should provide the bianconere with the impetus to remain mid-table for the rest of the season.

They are Junior, on loan from Parma; and Roque Junior, on loan from Milan after a less-than-satisfactory stint at Leeds.

Junior is expected to make his debut against Milan, while Roque Junior will join the starting eleven for the clash with Inter.

Probable Team Line-Ups

Milan (4-4-2): Dida, Cafu, Costacurta, Maldini, Pancaro, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa, Kaka, Shevchenko

Siena (4-4-2): Rossi, Cirillo, Argilli, Mignani, Cufre, Taddei, Vergassola, D'Aversa, Guigou, Flo, Chiesa.

Players To Watch

Milan

Goals?

The rossoneri created many of these last weekend and, if they are to replicate the form that earned them the 5-0 victory, then chief architect Kaka should once again be magnificent to behold.

Siena

Rossi will be subjected to much pressure in goal.

And how he stands up to it, in light of Milan's form, should make for fascinating viewing.

01/27/2004. Kaka has won over many fans following his explosion at Milan where he has combined quality performances with a good quantity of goals too.

The young Brazilian ace has set his targets high: "Last year Milan became European champions, but I wasn't here so I won't be satisfied with just winning the Scudetto. Siena's match is an important one, as we are playing for the top position. We must go on the pitch fully concentrated and win."
