Juventus GM Luciano Moggi has assured supporters that star striker Alessandro del Piero is close to signing a new, extended contract.
Moggi said yesterday: "With an absolute certainty I can already reveal: Del Piero remains with Juventus.
"The current contract will expire in 2004 and will be renewed.
"We can also say that he is already ready to sign. It will be for certain four years, we are discussing if we can make it for five or at least have the option for a fifth season.
"His image rights have been settled for a long time. We have established an excellent agreement with him."

Serie A Week 2 - 14/9/03 (20.30)
Chievo 1 - 2 Juventus
D'Anna pen 21 (C), Legrottaglie 25 (J), Trezeguet 49 (J)
Stadio Bentegodi
--------------------------------------------------------
Former Chievo star Nicola Legrottaglie helped Juventus fight back to a crucial 2-1 victory on his old stomping ground.
Chievo have now faced Juventus five times and lost all those games, so it was with some trepidation that they welcomed the Scudetto holders to the Stadio Bentegodi.
Juve-owned striker Giuseppe Sculli started for the Flying Donkeys in a surprise trident attack, while Nicola Legrottaglie stepped in for Ciro Ferrara. Marcello Lippi opted not to rotate the squad to start with, fielding all his internationals, and placed Edgar Davids on the bench.
Chievo had a strong start and went close early on with an Amauri header and Federico Cossato low drive.
Luca Marchegiani also punched out an Alessandro Del Piero free kick, but the referee pointed to the spot for a Mauro Camoranesi tug on Sculli. Captain Lorenzo D'Anna stepped up to successfully convert and give Chievo the lead.
It did not last long, as former Chievo hero Nicola Legrottaglie rose to nod in a free header on Camoranesi's free kick. Despite knowing his talents in the air all too well, Chievo surprisingly left the defender unmarked in the centre.
Gigi Del Neri's men fought back and Sculli certainly should have kept his shot down following good build-up play from Santana.
Juve were more determined after the break and turned the game around completely with David Trezeguet. The Frenchman chested down a Gianluca Zambrotta cross and swept home from eight yards.
Trezeguet should have grabbed a brace on the counter-attack, but on the resulting corner Pavel Nedved's low drive thumped the base of the post.
Juve wasted another opportunity moments later with Camoranesi opting to cut across for Trezeguet instead of shooting and overhit the pass. The chance had been set up by a delicate Del Piero ball.
Del Piero then forced a difficult save out of goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani and there was bad news when Trezeguet appeared to turn his right ankle. The former Monaco star struggled on but was clearly in some discomfort.
Chievo refused to give in and became dangerous on the counter-attack with a point-blank Gianluigi Buffon save on substitute Mauricio Pinilla.
But Juve took absolute control of possession and Del Piero's tricky turn brought a desperate one-handed save out of Marchegiani.
The home side could easily have equalised on 67 minutes, but Santana's finish did not match the quality of the build-up.
Lippi opted to rest Trezeguet and Camoranesi for the final 20 minutes, giving Davids his Serie A debut for this season. There were reports he had been frozen out for his contract row with the club, but the Coach maintained Davids was simply off form.

Yes! :)
BUFFON: Didn't have much to do in the first half besides try to save a penalty which was near impossible. In the second half however, Gigi made some top-class saves and I don't think we would have won without him. 7.5
THURAM: Looked a bit vulnerable in the first half but was much better in the second period as he linked up well with Camoranesi and Appiah. Not bad from Lilian, but he can do better. 6.5
LEGROTTAGLIE: Was solid both in the air and on the ground although the pace of Sculli, Santana and co caused problems for him early on. A vital goal and a confident second half performance from Legro. 7
MONTERO: Was average IMHO. Montero needs to be more consistent as he was solid at times but was easily beaten at other times. Not as good as Legrottaglie on his current form. 6
ZAMBROTTA: Put in another magnificent performance. Was competent in defence and brilliant going forward. His work rate and effort is nothing short of world-class. Zambro, you are my MOTM. 8
CAMORANESI: Started very well IMO. Camo made some nice runs and passes and caused problems for the Chievo left wing back all night long. I wouldn't have subbed him, but oh well. 7
TACCHINARDI: Was solid once again. His distribution was good and so was his tackling. He and Appiah controlled the midfield well in the latter stages of the first half and in the second half. 7
APPIAH: Very similar performance to Tacchi's, maybe a bit better. Was good in the middle and on the right hand side. 7
NEDVED: Was one of the best players on the pitch. The Czech international worked and worked and worked and was tremendously unlucky not to score as he hit the woodwork. 8
DEL PIERO: Another classy performance from Alex. He held up the ball well, laid it off well, passed it well and dribbled well. Unlucky not to score. 7.5
TREZEGUET: A very quiet first half, but he improved in the second. Could've scored more than once, but did his job nevertheless. 7

wah liao....Umberto Agnelli has spoken..true anot?
September 15, 2003
Juventus powerbroker Umberto Agnelli has revealed midfielder Edgar Davids is likely to join AS Roma next summer.
Agnelli admitted yesterday: "Lippi is very serious about his players. When he doesn't count on someone, it's like they don't exist any longer.
"One of these players is Davids.
"I expect he will go to Roma next year."
Along with Roma, Chelsea and Barcelona are also chasing the Dutchman.

Good, Bad and Funny News:
Good News: Trezeguet made it! He'll be called for tomorrow's game cos he passed the fitness test this morning. Same for Davids but he will start from the bench most probably. Another good (?) news is that Zalayeta has been called up for the match as well so he recovered.
Bad News: Legro did not make it and he will not be called up, however he will be fit for Sunday.
Funny News: During the daily news conference, Del Piero was the player that today had to answer the journalists questions. During the conference Lippi sat down next to the journalists and asked DP this question: "When you're with your gf, do you start attacking from the side and then move to the centre?" to which all the people starting laughing. Then a journalist cracked everyone up cos he followed Lippi's quiestion with "Does Nedved partecipate in this attack from the side as well?"
Nice to see the whole team in a good mood :D

heres the lineup i feel Lippi will put out -
Buffon, Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Appiah, Nedved, Del Piero, Trezeguet.
if everything goes according to plan, Lippi will bring on Di Vaio in the 2nd half for Trezeguet and Davids for Tacchinardi or Camoranesi.
Tudor could come on as sub too in the latter stages.

Alessandro Del Piero scored twice as Juventus struggled to dispose of Fatih Terim's Galatasaray.
Juventus were defeated Finalists last year and have made no secret of the fact the Champions' League is their main target this season.
The campaign kicked off in Turin against Fatih Terim's Galatasaray, a Coach who had previously never lost to the Bianconeri in his career. Ciro Ferrara replaced the injured Nicola Legrottaglie in central defence, while Edgar Davids was again left on the bench.
It took just five minutes for Alessandro Del Piero to give Juve the lead. Mauro Camoranesi threaded through for the unmarked captain to turn in a right-footed angled drive.
The Bianconeri fielded David Trezeguet despite an injury worry and his daisy-cutter almost took Mondragon by surprise for a fingertip save.
Pavel Nedved could perhaps have gone for goal soon after, but he opted to set up Trezeguet and Korkmaz slid in to recover a desperate situation.
However, Galatasaray drew level with ex-Parma and Inter flop Hakan Sukur. The veteran striker was left relatively unmarked to nod in a corner kick on 19 minutes.
Juve were extremely unlucky not to get back into the lead on the half-hour mark. Del Piero's corner was met by the head of Trezeguet, but Batista cleared off the line with his 'keeper beaten.
The captain then tried with a header that looped over the bar from another Camoranesi cross.
Edgar Davids stepped on for the second half to replace the tired-looking Alessio Tacchinardi in a more aggressive midfield.
However, they continued to find no way through an organised Galatasaray defence and there were few real scoring opportunities.
The Bianconeri did not seem to know where their teammates were on the field, as Del Piero again cut back to empty space instead of passing to the completely unmarked Nedved.
Gianluca Zambrotta attempted a spectacular bicycle-kick, but the finish was off target.
Igor Tudor was thrown on in place of Camoranesi, and the Italian international did not appear pleased with the substitution.
Del Piero's free kicks provided Juve's best chances and on 67 minutes he curled a splendid set-piece on to the crossbar.
The breakthrough finally emerged with fifteen minutes to go. Del Piero's free kick appeared to be flicked on by Ferrara to take Mondragon by surprise. However, after the match the defender revealed that he had not touched the ball, so the goal should be credited to the captain.
Del Piero could have extended their lead soon after, but his just failed to get a good strong header on Stephan Appiah's centre.
Galatasaray refused to give in an Gianluigi Buffon punched out a deflected Arif cross-cum-shot.
Substitute Marco Di Vaio brought a magnificent reaction save out of Mondragon in the final minute, as the Colombian shot-stopper flew to fingertip out his powerful header.

Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta; Tacchinardi (Davids 46), Appiah; Camoranesi (Tudor 65), Nedved, Del Piero; Trezeguet (Di Vaio 78)

Marcello Lippi admits he wasn’t entirely happy with Juve’s performance in the 2-1 win over Galatasaray.
“It wasn’t a great game,” confirmed the Coach, “especially as in recent weeks we have given the fans some spectacular performances.”
It had taken just five minutes to break the deadlock with the first of two Alessandro Del Piero goals.
“Scoring so early on we unfortunately believed it would be easy, but there is no such thing in the Champions’ League.”
“Galatasaray did well to close down all the spaces and we didn’t create a great deal, but fortunately managed to win the opening match.”
Some of the Bianconeri looked decidedly tired and Alessio Tacchinardi limped off with a calf problem at half-time.
“Our players have taken part in five games during the last fortnight and were a little tired after the first half,” noted Lippi.
“I think the switch to a three-man midfield helped bring order with Igor Tudor in front of the defence. He gave clarity to the movement.”
Nonetheless, the Coach insists that the difficulties against Galatasaray should not overshadow the positives.
“We had a little bit of trouble, but Juventus did win and cannot be shot down after all the good work we have done this month.”
Ciro Ferrara was originally credited with the winning goal, but after the final whistle the defender made a surprise confession.
“I joked about when it went in and pointed to myself in celebration,” laughed the veteran, “but the goal belongs to Alessandro.”
It was a crucial strike, as up until that point Juventus had been frustrated by the Turkish side.
“These are very important points for our campaign, as it is essential to get off to a good start.”
“Perhaps we weren’t always as concentrated or committed as we should have been,” added Ferrara, “but we got the win in the end.”
Fatih Terim had never previously lost to Juventus during his time at Milan and Fiorentina, but was forced to bow down in Turin.
“After the equaliser I did not expect to lose this game as we played well and covered all the spaces,” noted ‘The Emperor’.
“Juventus had a few chances after the break and pushed forward, but they didn’t really trouble us too much.”
The winning goal came from Del Piero’s free kick with less than twenty minutes left on the clock.
“That is football, as we lost concentration for a moment and the opposition scored.”

Serie A Week 3 - 21/9/03 (20.30)
Juventus-Roma
Live on British Eurosport (7.25 UK time)
Stadio Delle Alpi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They don’t come much bigger, much brighter or more bitter than Juventus-Roma. A grudge match between the top two sides in Serie A right now can only be an event in the Italian calendar.
These two teams have always carried on a difficult rapport both on and off the field, controversy sticking to them like glue. This season there is added spice with the on-going Edgar Davids saga. President Franco Sensi announced that the Dutchman had agreed to join Roma as a free agent next summer, while Juve have seemingly frozen him out of the first team as punishment for not extending his contract. Should Davids be given a place in the starting eleven, it would be a performance to watch.
Another man in the spotlight is Nicola Legrottaglie, as his ticket to the Capital was switched to Turin overnight. One of the summer transfer stories saw the ex-Chievo defender carry on negotiations with Roma for months, only to join Juve in a surprise deal. A similar scenario occurred with Stephan Appiah, so it is not difficult to see why the two clubs are at constant loggerheads.
There are set to be fireworks on the field as well as off. Fabio Capello’s new trident attack system of Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella has worked wonders, netting seven goals in two games. Ex-Valencia striker John Carew provides another tactical alternative, while Cristian Chivu has already shown his free kick prowess with a stunning strike on his debut.
Olivier Dacourt returns from suspension, with Christian Panucci and Vincent Candela also back in action. Perhaps even more importantly, Roma do not have the distraction of the Champions’ League this season and are aiming squarely to recapture their Scudetto.
Juventus have won the title for the last two years running and it will be quite a task to do the hat-trick. They certainly have the squad for it, as Marco Di Vaio, Davids and possibly Fabrizio Miccoli – on the mend after an emergency appendectomy – are ready to come off the bench.
Di Vaio may well start after Trezeguet limped off with a knee problem against Chievo. Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluca Zambrotta are the on-form men of the moment for Juve and traditionally relish these big encounters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Tacchinardi, Appiah; Camoranesi, Nedved, Del Piero; Trezeguet

Serie A Preview: Juventus v AS Roma
BACKGROUND:
On Sunday night, the 'Delle Alpi' stadium of Turin will be the host for the most important match of the day, and up till now, of the whole season.
It has been an unusual week prior to Sunday's encounter between the current Italian Champions and the resurgent Roma side. This is whereas usually we would have a whole week of heated arguments going on between Roma's President Franco Sensi and Juventus' General Manager Luciano Moggi, strangely enough both rivals have kept very quiet. For once they will let the players do the talking, but rest assured that bad refereeing decisions will spark endless and useless debates on who got the most favours and who was the most damaged in the aftermath.
The technical aspect of the match offers very interesting topics with both teams coming from two straight league wins to keep a 100% Serie A record just like Lazio, Milan and Inter. Even if it is still early on in the season, this match already promises to be a battle between two teams who want to keep their firm grips on the top spot of the table.
Even though Juventus' main target for the season is the coveted Champions League trophy that has eluded them many times in the past years, they are not going to give up on their hard earned Scudetto, especially not to their rivals Roma. Interviewed after the midweek encounter between Juventus and Galatasaray, Moggi commented that Juventus will always put up a fight against Roma, even if it was just for a game of dice!
After such a disappointing season, Fabio Capello and his troops are looking forward to this mouth watering encounter and to showing everyone that they are back to their best by defeating the bianconeri on their own soil. In fact the Roma Coach is very confident of his team's chances, especially after admiring Cristian Chivu's brilliant debut against Brescia, which was highlighted with a wonderfully taken free kick. What was last year's Roma's weakest department has probably become the best department of the whole Serie A, thanks to Chivu and Walter Samuel, so it will be very tough for the Juventus frontline to crack the Roman defense open.
Since taking over Roma, Capello has only managed one win against Juventus (2-0 in the 2001/02 season) while the other seven matches ended in 3 victories for the bianconeri and 4 draws.
LATEST TEAM NEWS:
JUVENTUS: Few changes for Lippi's side from the current winning formation, with Edgar Davids likely to take over from Alessio Tacchinardi after the latter picked up a knock in the Champions League match. Fabrizio Miccoli is still recovering from the appendix operation he undertook 3 weeks ago, so Mauro Camoranesi will keep his role in the first team. Nicola Legrottaglie, who Roma were very close to clinching before Juventus interfered in the transfer, will have recovered from the midweek injury and is at Lippi's disposal.
ROMA: Without Christian Panucci and Vincent Candela, Capello will most probably have to redesign his defense to three central defenders with Jonathan Zebina, Samuel and Chivu. Olivier Dacourt will be back from suspension so he will push the young De Rossi on the bench, while Antonio Cassano is still doubtful and Marco Del Vecchio might take his place.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS:
Juventus (4-2-3-1): Buffon; Zambrotta, Montero, Legrottaglie, Thuram; Davids, Appiah; Del Piero, Nedved, Camoranesi; Trezeguet
Roma (3-4-1-2): Pelizzoli; Zebina, Samuel, Chivu; Mancini, Dacourt, Emerson, Lima; Totti, Cassano, Montella
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus): The Juventus captain is passing through a magnificent moment having scored 4 goals in the past 3 games for the Old Lady. This match against Roma will definitely tell us if Pinturicchio is really back to his best form.
Francesco Totti (Roma): It only took one match for Totti to show us he is still up there amongst the best in the world. Pavel Nedved, this week, hailed him as the best Italian player there is and we cannot disagree with the Czech's judgment, adding that he is currently also probably one of the top three in the world.

There was high drama in Turin after Jonathan Zebina's late equaliser ensured Juventus and Roma shared the points.
This is always a massive game in the Italian calendar, but with both teams at the top of the table it became a showdown for the Scudetto.
Roma went for the victory and fielded their trident attack with Vincenzo Montella, Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti upfront. Jonathan Zebina and Francisco Lima stepped in for the injured Christian Panucci and Vincent Candela.
Juventus were without Alessio Tacchinardi due to a calf problem, so contract rebel Edgar Davids got his first start of the season. It was an intriguing match for him, as it is reported the Dutchman will move to Roma on a free transfer at the end of this season.
Nicola Legrottaglie also took on the club that was in advanced negotiations for his signature in the summer. The ex-Chievo defender changed destination practically overnight and opted for the Bianconeri.
Juve had the more aggressive start with Davids ballooning over the bar from a good position and Alessandro Del Piero's free kick was curled high.
Del Piero ran rings around Zebina on 13 minutes, but injured himself during that move and immediately requested a substitution. It appeared to be a left calf strain and Marco Di Vaio was forced to step in.
Soon after the former Parma star almost opened the scoring. David Trezeguet slipped on the edge of the box and cut back for Di Vaio, but his powerful angled drive was inches wide of the target.
Moments later Roma had their first real shot on goal. Totti placed a spectacular lob from the edge of the box and Gianluigi Buffon was at full stretch to fingertip it over the crossbar.
The deadlock was eventually broken in chaotic fashion after 20 minutes. Ivan Pelizzoli managed to parry Trezeguet's header - aided by a Zebina error - but could do nothing on Di Vaio's follow-up.
The lead lasted less than five minutes, as Cristian Chivu slammed in a magnificent free kick. Buffon didn't even see the ball move as the ex-Ajax man put so much power and accuracy on it.
Chivu had also scored with a similar free kick on his debut against Brescia last Sunday and has taken to Serie A immediately.
The tension was sky-high and a scuffle broke out following a Pavel Nedved challenge on Emerson. Totti aimed a free kick at goal from over 30 metres, but it was just over.
Di Vaio was then halted for an extremely tight offside decision as he ran towards goal before Paolo Montero nodded a Nedved set-piece just wide at the back post.
On 35 minutes super-sub Di Vaio struck again from six yards. The forward stuck his foot out to toe-poke a Nedved free kick in at the near post with the slightest of deflections.
Scoring against Roma is an extra special experience for Di Vaio, as he is a Lazio youth product and lifelong fan of the Biancocelesti.
The tension at the Delle Alpi was palpable and several rows broke out in all areas of the pitch. Totti was perhaps fortunate to avoid a second booking for his elbow on Igor Tudor.
Totti was squaring up for the potential equalising volley in first half stoppage time, but Appiah managed to acrobatically clear the ball practically off his foot.
Fabio Capello made a change for the second half as Montella made way for the giant John Carew.
Juve had their first chance of the half within 120 seconds, as Pelizzoli got a hand to Nedved's low drive and the defence scrambled clear.
The Giallorossi fought back and a Totti daisy-cutter whistled past the far post with Buffon beaten. The visitors looked much more convincing and poured forward in waves.
Buffon made a rare mistake on Carew's cross, but Legrottaglie was there to clear up the loose ball before Cassano could pounce.
There was a tactical change on the hour mark, when Montero made way for Mauro Camoranesi and Tudor therefore stepped back into defence.
On 71 minutes Totti's through ball found Carew in space just inside the box, but the Norwegian hesitated and Lilian Thuram flung himself at the ball to clear.
Most of their chances went through the captain and Cassano's cutting through ball found Totti only for an angled drive to skim the woodwork.
Capello made two more changes, introducing Marco Delvecchio and Daniele De Rossi to increase their attacking potential.
Camoranesi was very lively and had penalty appeals for a clash with Francisco Lima rejected.
The game stepped up a gear as it neared the final minutes and a Totti missile from midfield stung Buffon's palms.
Nedved was booked for an outstretched hand on Mancini as the Brazilian had skipped past him.
Roma were increasing the pressure and Jonathan Zebina scored a simply stunning equaliser with three minutes left on the clock. The defender rarely gets forward, but he drilled in a powerful effort from 25 metres that may have taken a slight deflection as it moved through the packed penalty area.
Camoranesi went close to restoring Juve's lead soon after as the match sprung to life with a fiery finish.
Deep into injury time Totti thought he had won it when he sprung the offside trap, but Buffon bravely stood his ground and charged down the chip.

At the end of their 2-2 draw, both Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi maintain their men deserved a victory.
“We dominated the second half,” insisted the Roma boss after a last-gasp equaliser from Jonathan Zebina.
“It is a shame that Francesco Totti’s late chip was charged down, as he usually never misses those chances.”
It was a hard-fought encounter at the Delle Alpi and his men twice fought back from a goal down.
“This is a great team at my disposal,” concluded Capello. “We moved in a harmonious yet determined fashion. This is the Roma side I want.”
On the opposite end of the press room, Lippi had a rather different view of the 90 minutes in Turin.
“Juventus were superior to Roma for over an hour,” insisted the Bianconeri boss. “We played well, especially in the first half, but suffered from tiredness towards the end.”
Indeed many pundits claim the Giallorossi are favourites for the Scudetto because they are not tested midweek by the Champions’ League.
“If we are analysing this match, then it is impossible to ignore the fact we played against Galatasaray on Wednesday.”
The strain is already beginning to show with Alessandro Del Piero limping off after 14 minutes with a calf problem.
“Alessio Tacchinardi was also out before kick-off,” added Lippi, “but these things happen when you have a packed fixture list.”
David Trezeguet reacted angrily when he was substituted in the closing stages of the game.
“I had to take off a striker to introduce Mauro Camoranesi into midfield,” explained the tactician. “I preferred to play the counter-attack towards the end as Roma poured forward.”

I sure hope DP's injury is not very serious :(
Here's my comments on the players..
BUFFON - Not his best performance but Gigi made crucial saves on Totti in both halves. 6
THURAM - Good defensively, not so good offensively. I want to see Lilian getting down that right flank more often because we all know how dangerous he can be. 6
LEGROTTAGLIE - Another solid performance. Legro is amazing in the air and looks very comfortable with the ball at his feet. Unfortunately he's still making a few clumsy tackles here and there. 6.5
MONTERO - Nothing special. Some nice challenges and interceptions, but Paolo can do better. 6
ZAMBROTTA - Took the captain's armband after DP left and showed good leadership and responsibility. A very convincing defensive performance but not quite as explosive as he was against Empoli and Chievo. 7
APPIAH - Showed some nice touches and was pretty solid when defending but Stephan has more to offer Juventus. 6.5
TUDOR - Good work from the big man. Tudor was efficient as a midfielder and like a wall in defence. Hopefully he takes Montero's place in central defence when Tacchinardi returns. 6.5
DAVIDS - Didn't give away the ball much but wasn't as aggresive as he normally is. Not a bad effort from Edgar. 6/6.5
NEDVED - Finally Neddy displayed his form of last season. He ran like mad as usual and his passing was much sharper than it was against Chievo. Played a crucial part in both goals and almost scored one himself. 7.5
DEL PIERO - It's a real shame that Alex got injured because he was in great shape going into the match. Ran rings around Zebina but then hurt himself. No rating.
TREZEGUET - Trez actually tried to get involved in the build-up and was good in the first half. Unfortunately the service wasn't really there in the second half and he struggled to get involved. 6
DI VAIO - Talk about a super sub. Marco came on for the injured Del Piero and scored a brace. Thanks alot DV. 7
CAMORANESI - Seems to be in good form. Made some nice dribbles and I thought that he earned us a penalty but Pellegrino turned it down. 6.5
BIRINDELLI - No rating.

Month out for Del Piero
Early reports suggest that Juventus will be without Alessandro Del Piero for around the next four weeks.
The Delle Alpi star picked up an injury in the 2-2 draw with Roma last night and the news isn’t good for the Bianconeri.
The Italian international suffered a left calf strain after just 14 minutes and initial tests suggest he’ll be out for a month.
However, the exact seriousness of the injury will not be known until he has a scan on the problem this Tuesday.
In his absence, boss Marcello Lippi could decide to play either Fabrizio Miccoli or Marco Di Vaio – who scored twice last night.
Meanwhile, David Trezeguet has criticised his side for becoming too defensive in the closing minutes of the game which led to Roma’s 87th minute equaliser.
"I’m saddened by the result," he said. "Up until my substitution I think we deserved a third goal more than they merited a second.
"We tried to close the game and that was a mistake. We even risked losing it right at the end."

a month ! thats a lot of time :(
but looking at Juve's fixtures the next month it may not be that big a loss
so assuming DP is out till the 20th or so, here are the upcoming games -
September 28 Reggina-V
September 30 Olympiakos-V
October 5 H-Bologna
October 19 Ancona-V
October 21 H-Real Sociedad
he could be back for the home game vs Sociedad.
Reggina, Olympiakos, Bologna and Ancona shouldn't be a problem.

Italin media report that it will be a month 4 Del Piero cause it is a strain not a "strappo" (when the muscle get broken).
About the match: well it was very entrateining IMO.
It was better to win it but considering that we had the CL and Roma had all the week to "work on us"..:)

more of my comments...
Last night's match was a 'classical' Serie A match, highly tactical but still entertaining. Too much happened between Lippi and Capello, and for every tic there was a tac. It was like Lippi and Capello were playing chess together, and Lippi was waiting and ready for Capello's next move.
But I believe the 2-2 results was a fair result as we dominated the first half and wasted alot of chances while Roma had the lion's share of possession and chances in the second half.
We have to thank Totti for being off-form as he missed no less than 5 chances (3 from outside the box and 2 from inside) that he would normally score with during any other day of the week.
It's true that Lippi made a sort of 'grave' mistake towards the end when he substituted Birindelli for Treze. Birindelli wasn't used and he only sit back. Without Trezeguet, Roma's defenders were free to move forward without risking to let in a goal and that is exactly what happened when Zebina moved forward for the first time in the match and scored the equalizing goal from a strong shot outside the box.
Even though we were leading for most of the time, but I would say that the result isn't really bad. Most of you predicted a defeat as Roma were in rich form. Even though the top 4 have now the same number of points, but it seems that us and Roma have played the strongest teams up to this early point:
Roma - Udinese (A), Brescia (H), Juve (A).
Juve - Empoli (H), Chievo (A), Roma (H).
Milan - Ancona (A), Bologna (H), Perugia (A).
Inter - Modena (H), Seina (A), Sampdoria (H).
Flash moment of the match - Camoranesi embarassing Lima everytime he moved forward, Di Vaio scoring moments after coming in.
Trash moment of the match - Roma equalizing, Del Piero's injury.
About Del Piero it's so sad that he got injured, especially that he was in a good form. But remember that during times like these that Miccoli and others should stand-up and be seen. Let's not forget that during last season, Del Piero was also injured for 2 months but the squad responded well and won all Serie A matches during that time.
:)

Juventus appear to have beaten Barcelona and Arsenal for the signing of Udinese midfielder Marek Jankulovski.
The Czech Republic international has been tracked by all three clubs for over 12 months.
But Juve have stolen a march on their rivals by opening talks with Udinese about a £6 million deal.
The Serie A champs are also offering a 12-month loan of one of Ruben Oliveira, Marcelo Zalayeta or Guiseppe Sculli for the 2004/05 season.

yes roma has advantage in fitness but dun forget it's home play for juve so advantage for juve also. somemore juve's reserves are the strongest :slant:

Milan - Ancona (A), Bologna (H), Perugia (A).

well so far roma has played the strongest teams (away at Udinese & Juventus which are usually strong at home) but still 1 win 1 draw for us (so proud) ;)
as for juve, away at chievo is nothing lah, they're not the 2 years back chievo. as for playing roma at home but yet only manage to get 1 point, hmm so so only lor (heehee)
as for milan & inter, difficult to predict leh. based on last season milan are strong against strong teams but weak towards small teams but vice versa for inter. but both teams seem struggle abit now.
also dun count lazio out, they're only 1 point behind us and parma is not a weak team.
anyway good luck to all above teams in european competitions. hope they bring back both CL & UEFA cup back to italy

Injury woe for Alex and Pippo
Today’s tests confirm Alex Del Piero is out until November, while Pippo Inzaghi must be sidelined for ten days.
The Juventus captain limped off just 13 minutes into Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Roma at the Stadio Delle Alpi.
An initial diagnosis on the left calf strain suggested he would be ruled out of action for at least a month, but the latest tests prove the situation is even more serious.
It will take roughly two months to fully recover from this injury as the muscle has been torn.
“I hope to give myself a birthday present by returning for the game against Udinese on November 9,” announced the Juve star.
“It is certainly irritating, but I knew the moment I pulled up that I would be a Serie A spectator for quite a while.”
As for the other on-form Italian international, Pippo Inzaghi had quite a scare when he was stretchered off wearing a neck brace at Perugia.
The Milan striker had a suspected whiplash injury after an accidental collision with Grifoni goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac.
He was kept in hospital overnight for observation and tests now confirm he suffered neck and jaw injuries as well as the fracture of a tooth that had to be removed.
Inzaghi must rest for at least eight to ten days before he can resume training, so he will miss the weekend tie with Lecce and the Champions’ League clash with Spaniards Celta Vigo.
This may at last be the opportunity for Rivaldo to be given more room in the Rossoneri line-up.

Following the capture of Stephen Appiah, Juventus are set to raid Perugia again for another midfielder.
Argentine youngster Mario Alberto Santana, 21, is said to be a target for Juve chief Luciano Moggi, according to sources close to the club.
Indeed, Moggi is said to have already negotiated a deal giving Juve 50 per cent of Santana's registration, in a similar deal that was struck for Appiah last season
Err... you meant CHievo Santana? He was absolutely amazing on Juve-Chievo match. A Fast and smart player. He gave Thuram quite a hard time.
Anyway, the only player i hope will join Juve right now is Aimar. But knowing Moggi, it will never happen. He even let D'allesandro went to Wolfburg(?).

Juventus plan to trump a host of Premiership clubs for Parma's exciting inside-forward Alberto Gilardino.
Middlesbrough, Tottenham, Birmingham and Blackburn Rovers all have had the Italy U21 international watched in club and international games this season.
Juve chief Luciano Moggi has already registered his interest with Parma and is keen to open talks about an £8 million deal in January.
Gilardino would immediately be loaned back to Parma for the second-half of the season, which could also include a six-month loan of a fringe Juve player such as Marcelo Zalayeta - a favourite of Parma trainer Cesare Prandelli.

Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Edgar Davids' situation at Juventus.
The Dutchman comes out of contract at the end of the season and is believed ready to open talks with Roma in January about a Bosman move.
However, Roma do not have the spending power of Real Madrid and Italian press reports suggest sports director Jorge Valdano is interested in Davids as a replacement for recent Chelsea signing Claude Makelele.
Barcelona have also been linked with Davids this season.

"It's just a matter of details: there aren't any problems.
"I won't put a time limit on it, but I can say that it will arrive soon.
"My position and the club's one are really close - it is just lacking the finishing touches. My hope is that the situation is ready to be finished up and the deal to be done soon."

Alex Del Piero has waved goodbye to his chances of winning the Golden Ball. While Juve teammate Pavel Nedved says he has no interest in the award.
The Italian ace is a contender to win the 2003 European Player of the Year title but the No 10 feels his injury has put an end to his dreams of winning the honour.
"The Golden Ball? I fear that I will be nothing more than a spectator in that race," said the Bianconeri captain.
The 28-year-old has been ruled out of action until November after picking up a calf strain in the 2-2 draw with Roma on Sunday.
However, the Golden Ball could still be heading to Turin after the extraordinary year that Pavel Nedved has enjoyed.
"In all honesty, I’m not thinking about it," explained the Czech ace. "I’m just interested in winning with Juventus.
"I’m getting a bit tired of these stories. I think that Raul should be handed it for what he has done and what he represents at his club."
The former Lazio player is considered as one of Juventus’ on field leaders but he doesn’t want that label either.
"I’m just a player that is made to feel important by my team," he added. "This club has other leaders like Ferrara, Conte, Montero and Del Piero."
Nedved played an instrumental role in Juve’s march to the Champions’ League Final but missed the match through suspension. He now wants to make up for that.
"I’m still disappointed that I was ruled out of that game," he stated. "I hope that I am given another chance to play for that trophy."
Juve lost the Old Trafford final on penalties to Milan.

Serie A Week 4 - 27/9/03 (18.00)
Reggina - Juventus
Stadio Granillo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus must try to recapture the top spot without captain Alessandro Del Piero and travel to the tricky town of Reggio Calabria.
The Bianconeri have not exactly impressed over their last two games against Galatasaray and Roma, but still managed to score four goals during those encounters. The 2-2 draw with the capital club in particular upset the fans with a sluggish second half.
Del Piero’s injury will undoubtedly force a tactical change for Marcello Lippi and the depth of the squad this year is going to be decisive in surviving this difficult time. The captain may be out for anything up to six weeks with a left calf strain and his natural replacement, Fabrizio Miccoli, has still not recovered from an emergency appendectomy.
Marco Di Vaio certainly has the pedigree to fill in as an out-and-out striker, scoring both goals when coming on as an early substitute against Roma. However, the disappointing form of David Trezeguet puts even more pressure on the midfield to create chances. Alessio Tacchinardi is fit to play at the Stadio Granillo after missing Sunday’s game with a muscular worry, so Edgar Davids may well be benched again in favour of Mauro Camoranesi.
Reggina are doing well under the guidance of Franco Colomba. The Coach had left the club after earning promotion two years ago, but returned in the summer to great acclaim. Goals used to be a problem for this side, but the Amaranto have now netted an impressive seven in three games.
The real worry now is in defence, as every week they have lost a lead and are still looking for their first win of the campaign. There can be no doubting their 4-4 draw at Brescia was entertaining for the neutral viewer, but they cannot afford such cavalier defending against the likes of Juventus. Goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi returns between the posts after an injury, but it is a special occasion for the Juve-owned Davide Baiocco to prove what he can do.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reggina (probable): Belardi; Jiranek, Sottil, Franceschini, Falsini; Tedesco, Baiocco; Mozart, Nakamura, Di Michele; Bonazzoli
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah, Tudor, Tacchinardi; Nedved; Trezeguet, Di Vaio

Marco Di Vaio is confident that he can successfully fill in for the injured Alessandro Del Piero.
Juventus will be without their inspirational captain until November which will give Di Vaio a chance for regular football.
"This is the second consecutive season that I have been called upon to replace an important player," said the former Parma man.
"I’ll give my very best so that his absence won’t be felt. But I’m hopeful as there are many reasons to do well."
Di Vaio, who replaced David Trezeguet and Del Piero on numerous occasions last season, is eager to shine.
"I want to demonstrate to people what I can do," he added. "I want to make it difficult for the boss to leave me out of the side."
However, Di Vaio – who scored twice against Roma last week – will face stiff opposition from Fabrizio Miccoli.
"Fabrizio is a quality player but I believe that we can even play together once he is fully fit again," he continued.
"There is great competition for places in this attack. Del Piero and Trezeguet form a good partnership but everyone here wants to play a part this season."

Injury problems are mounting at Juventus after David Trezeguet was ruled out of the Reggina clash.
The French striker has picked up an ankle injury in training and has been left out of the squad for tomorrow’s game.
Boss Marcello Lippi, who is already without Alex Del Piero until November, won’t risk the former Monaco man in a bid to have him fit for the Oympiakos game on Tuesday.
Juve will probably field Marco Di Vaio and Marcelo Zalayeta in attack, as Fabrizio Miccoli is likely to start on the bench after his recent appendix operation.
The Bianconeri will also be without a few other recognised first team players at the Stadio Granillo.
Defenders Nicola Legrottaglie and Lilian Thuram have both been rested after a hectic start to the season.
There are also claims that Stephan Appiah will sit on the bench with Alessio Tacchinardi and Edgar Davids starting in midfield.
Juve squad: Buffon, Ferrara, Tacchinardi, Montero, Tudor, Miccoli, Nedved, Chimenti, Iuliano, Maresca, Birindelli, Camoranesi, Appiah, Zambrotta, Di Vaio, Zalayeta, Davids, Scicchitano.

Marcello Lippi has put the pressure on the so-called ‘Juve MkII’ to get a win at Reggina this evening.
“Juventus must prove that every player has the confidence and belief in his own abilities to make this team great,” announced the Coach.
“Everyone must prove they belong in a Bianconeri jersey. This year I have a team that is more complete than ever before, so I can change things around without losing out in terms of quality.”
The rotation of the squad comes into play this week due to the upcoming Champions’ League trip to Olympiakos, but above all is forced upon Lippi by injuries.
David Trezeguet “took a knock to the ankle” and is also in doubt for Tuesday’s European tie, while Alessandro Del Piero has been ruled out until November with a calf strain.
Lilian Thuram, Nicola Legrottaglie, Antonio Conte, Gianluca Pessotto, Salvatore Fresi and Ruben Olivera have also stayed behind in Turin.
“I expect a wonderful response from the players who will take to the field at Reggio Calabria,” added Lippi.
“This must be a message to all the other clubs, but also to ourselves, to show Juventus can change five or six players but the solidity of the squad remains the same.”
Fabrizio Miccoli will be on the bench for the first time since he was rushed to hospital for an emergency appendectomy three weeks ago.
“Fabrizio is fine now,” noted the Coach, “but I am not accustomed to risking a player from the first minute after a serious injury.”
Marcelo Zalayeta has also just returned from muscular worries, so Marco Di Vaio will start as a lone striker with support from Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved.
Reggina are unbeaten so far this season, taking part in a series of spectacular draws against Sampdoria, Empoli and the most recent 4-4 scoreline at Brescia.
“Reggina is a strong and organised side with some good technique,” insisted the tactician. “They are prolific upfront and often take the lead in their games.”
The Amaranto also have a habit of losing those leads, having gone ahead only to be pegged back in every single game so far this season.

Serie A Week 4 - 27/9/03 (18.00)
Reggina 0 - 2 Juventus
Di Vaio 13 (J), Nedved 50 (J)
Stadio Granillo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marco Di Vaio took his tally to four goals in three games as Juve's second string side swept Reggina aside.
Juventus were plunged into an injury crisis for this trip to Reggio Calabria. Alessandro Del Piero is out until November with a calf strain, while David Trezeguet, Lilian Thuram and Nicola Legrottaglie did not even make the trip down South.
Marco Di Vaio, who netted twice in the 2-2 draw with Roma last week, was given the lone striker role with support from Pavel Nedved and Mauro Camoranesi.
Reggina were not cowed by the arrival of La Vecchia Signora and had a strong start with chances for Emiliano Bonazzoli and David Di Michele. The latter in particular gathered a Martin Jiranek cross and turned his marker, but the low drive whistled wide.
However, Juventus took the lead under chaotic circumstances. On the counter-attack Emanuele Belardi fumbled a harmless Nedved cross and Di Vaio pounced from six yards.
The ex-Parma hitman is on scintillating form at the moment and almost bagged a second moments later. Reggina's desire to get an equaliser left them open at the back and Di Vaio's angled drive came off the far post.
The Amaranto kept pushing and Mark Iuliano nearly scored a spectacular own goal on 20 minutes. His header on a free kick beat Gianluigi Buffon and thumped the crossbar.
Di Michele was particularly lively and shaped up for a shot on the edge of the box only for Ciro Ferrara to perform a crucial tackle.
Reggina goalkeeper Belardi was again caught in a difficult situation when his defenders failed to control a through ball, but this time the shot-stopper managed to scramble it clear before Di Vaio could score.
It was a very entertaining game and just before the break Shunsuke Nakamura's sweeping drive was just fingertipped on to the far post.
Gianluca Zambrotta replaced the disappointing Camoranesi for the second period.
Juventus struck again on the counter-attack at the dawn of the second half. The Bianconeri strung together a series of passes before Nedved gathered a Di Vaio assist to lift the ball over the goalkeeper.
Belardi made up for his earlier error with a splendid one-handed save on Di Vaio's angled drive.
Fabrizio Miccoli made his first appearance since undergoing an emergency appendectomy three weeks ago, replacing the tired Nedved for the final 30 minutes.
Ferrara performed another fantastic defensive intervention to toe-poke Di Michele's through ball away from the incoming Mozart. Then Tudor blocked a fierce Leon drive and Buffon flew to palm out a looping header from the substitute as Reggina gradually increased the pressure.
Reggina's game effectively came to an end when Andrea Sottil saw red for a second bookable offence. Juventus also finished the match with ten men, as after all their substitutions had been completed Tudor limped off with a calf problem.

Reggina: Belardi; Jiranek, Sottil, Mesto (Leon 60), Martinez; Baiocco, Mozart, Falsini; Nakamura; Di Michele (Torrisi 86), Bonazzoli

Some comments on our players..
Buffon 7 - Back to his great form. We owe it to him that no goal was scored against us today.
Ferrara 7.5 - Man of the match! What a player! He started as RB, then in the 2nd half Lippi moved him in the middle for a central 3 man defence with Zambrotta taking (for the first time ever) the role of a RB. Omnipresent!
Tudor 7 - A giant and a really good leader of the backline. Didn't make one single mistake, always winning balls. Too bad he had to limp off the pitch. Probably it's only cos he's not used to 90 minute games, so the calf did not hold. Nothing serious.
Iuliano 6.5 - A bit shaky and uncertain on certain occasions; risked an own goal, but luckily the crossbar saved him.
Birindelli 6.5 - Was quite effective to stop the Reggina forwards on his LB position. Midway through the 2nd half he swapped position with Zambrotta to take the RB place.
Camoranesi 5.5 - Very poor match. He just jogged around the pitch as if he did not give a damn about the match that was going on. Hope it's a one off.
Maresca 7 - Great game, dispensing assists and one touch passes. His verticalizations from the centre half were like mana from the sky for DV and Nedved.
Tacchinardi 6.5 - Not back to his best yet, but he still played diligently.
Appiah 8 - Moved forward more than in previous matches. Combined very well with Maresca and Di Vaio.
Nedved 7 - Back to the same Nedved of last year. Runs, passes and most importantly scores. Brilliant!
Di Vaio 7 - Most in form striker. Even if he had not scored, he still proved a spine in the back of the Reggina defense with his accelerations and perfect aim. Unlucky not to have scored at least another goal, but now he's top scorer of Serie A!
Zambrotta 6.5 - The usual super speed train. The only different thing is his new short haircut.
Miccoli 6 - Came in when Juve was suffering most. Few balls played to him, few chances to shine.
Montero 6.5 - With Montero on the pitch, the defensive line becomes more stable. We still need him!
Overall a good game with Maresca showing he's Juve material. Hopefully he shall get more chances

Juventus forward David Trezeguet is expected to be fit for Tuesday’s Champions’ League trip to Olympiakos.
The Frenchman has been included in the squad for the Greek clash after he missed the 2-0 win at Reggina on Saturday with a knee injury.
Trezeguet is set to start the game alongside Marco Di Vaio who has scored three goals in Serie A since taking over from the injured Alex Del Piero.
Defenders Nicola Legrottaglie and Lilian Thuram will also fly out to Greece later today after they too missed the Granillo tie.
"The win at Reggina has reassured me about the future," said boss Marcello Lippi. "I can change five players but the Juventus spirit remains the same."
However, Lippi does still have a number of injury problems to contend with. Gianluca Pessotto, Antonio Conte and Salvatore Fresi are still not 100 per cent fit.
Croatian international Igor Tudor will also miss the midweek game after he picked up another muscle strain.
Juventus will be looking for the three points tomorrow to add to the 2-1 victory over Galatasaray in Week 1 of the Champions’ League.

Juventus are considering a double raid on Udinese for midfielder Giampiero Pinzi and defender Per Kroldrup.
Juve see Pinzi as the ideal replacement for Edgar Davids, who is expected to leave Turin at the end of the season on a Bosman.
The Serie A champs have already registered their interest with Udinese and been told it will cost £6 million to sign 22 year-old Pinzi.
Juve chief Luciano Moggi has also asked to be kept informed of Danish international Kroldrup's situation.

09/29/2003. Greek champions Olympiakos host Italian champions and last year's Champions League finalists Juventus on Tuesday night at the Rizoupolis-Apollon stadium.
Olympiakos still cannot forget what happened on March 17th, 1999, when 5 minutes before the end of the match against Juventus, a mistaken play by goalkeeper Dimitris Elefteropoulos sent the Bianconeri to the semifinals.
Since that magical year, Olympiakos have continuously failed in European competitions even though they have crowned themselves Greek champions for seven years in a row.
Olympiakos are considered to be group D's most beatable side, especially due to their habit of offering terrible away displays. Their opening match against Real Sociedad confirmed this tendency as they Greeks fell at San Sebastian through a late Kovacevic penalty.
Juventus started off their CL run in a better fashion thanks to their 2-1 defeat of Galatasaray. However the Bianconeri coached by Marcello Lippi did not offer a convincing performance that day, and were lucky to get away with the win.
The electric atmosphere the Bianconeri are expected to find in Athens will make life extremely difficult for them, especially because they will be without the charisma and class of skipper Alessandro Del Piero.
The good news for coach Marcello Lippi is that he will be able to count on defender Nicola Legrottaglie and striker David Trezeguet, two players that missed Juve's successful Reggina roadtrip last weekend.
The match against the Calabresi demonstrated Juventus can overcome with ease what appear to be extremely dangerous situations. The Athens match will be a further test to this ability.
"Olympiakos are very dangerous at home thanks to their great skill and small stadium. The energy that is created surely gives them something extra. But a team like Juventus, that has a lot of ambitions, can't be scared by the fact that they are playing away from home," Lippi told reporters on Tuesday.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Cristian Karembeu (Olympiakos)-He will have to deal with a central trio composed by Appiah, Tacchinardi, and Davids. It's his chance to prove he is not a player of the past.
Pavel Nedved (Juventus)-When Del Piero is absent the Czech 'martian' automatically becomes Juve's leader. He happens to love this role.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Juventus welcome back French international striker David Trezeguet who will partner in-form Marco Di Vaio, standing in for the injured Alessandro Del Piero.
Olympiakos are mising their main striker as well, going into tonight's match without the fire power of Lambros Choutos whose repeated disciplinary failures have seen him dropped indefinitely. :D

FORZA NEDVED :)
Champions' League Phase One, Gp D - 30/9/03
Olympiakos 1 - 2 Juventus
Stoltidis 11 (O), Nedved 21, 79 (J)
Athens
Pavel Nedved netted a brace to fight back in Athens and grab a precious victory against Olympiakos.
David Trezeguet, Lilian Thuram and Nicola Legrottaglie returned from injury to start alongside Marco Di Vaio. This was their first Champions' League game this season without captain Alessandro Del Piero, but they will have to carry on in his absence until mid-November due to a calf strain.
The atmosphere was tense and early on a scuffle broke out as Gianluca Zambrotta reacted angrily to some tough tackles and Mavrogenidis saw penalty appeals for a clash with Paolo Montero waved away.
Olympiakos were aggressive from the start and took the lead after just eleven minutes with a precise looping header from Stoltidis. There was a defensive error in the box, as Lilian Thuram lost his man and Legrottaglie was left alone to mark both Stoltidis and Giovanni as ex-Samp midfielder Christian Karembeu's cross was floated in by the back post.
The home side kept on pushing and went close with Giovanni and the lively Karembeu.
However, Juve got back into the game on 21 minutes with a splendid set-piece from Pavel Nedved. The Czech maestro drilled a fierce low drive past the ill-placed defensive wall.
Olympiakos had the better of the play and it took a desperate last-gasp intervention from Montero to pluck the ball off Pantos as he charged towards Gianluigi Buffon.
It was a very ill-tempered encounter with play constantly interrupted by free kicks.
Juventus thought they had taken the lead with a spectacular Trezeguet volley just before the break, but the referee had already halted play for the Frenchman's offside position.
The second half started in a similar vein with a Djordjevic free kick coming off the near post and Buffon blocking the follow-up with his feet in a purely instinctual save.
Juve were forced to rely on the counter-attack and moments later Di Vaio just failed to turn in a sweeping low Nedved cross.
There was controversy soon after as Djordjevic was stopped as he went one-on-one with Buffon, but replays showed the Olympiakos star was clearly onside.
The defence was under constant pressure and Buffon palmed another Djordjevic effort out of the top corner.
Fabrizio Miccoli came on in place of Di Vaio to use his pace on the break and Juve began to take more control.
The Bianconeri almost took the lead soon after when Stephan Appiah flicked a Nedved free kick over his head, but the Greek goalkeeper performed a marvellous save to pluck it out of the top corner.
Miccoli really changed the face of the game and was very unlucky not to score fifteen minutes from time. He spotted Katergiannakis off his line and placed a great lob over his head, but it could only shake the crossbar.
The tide was turning and Juventus turned the game around completely with that man Nedved again. He took advantage of an initial defensive hesitation and drilled a powerful rocket into the roof of the net from twenty metres.
The goal allowed Juve to settle down, but the home side poured forward for four minutes of stoppage time and Christian Karembeu fired a good effort wide of the post.
Olympiakos: Katergiannakis; Mavrogenidis (Gonias 66), Antazas, Kostoulas, Venertidis; Pantos, Stoltidis, Karembeu, Djordjevic; Castillo (Tatsis 75); Giovanni (Georgiadis 66)
Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah, Tacchinardi, Davids; Nedved (Birindelli 89); Trezeguet, Di Vaio (Miccoli 56)

Marcello Lippi insists the whole team and not just double scorer Pavel Nedved must be thanked for the win in Athens.
“I don’t like giving all the credit for a victory to one man,” noted the Juventus boss after the 2-1 victory, “but I must compliment Olympiakos for putting us under pressure from the start.”
The Greeks took the lead early on and had several opportunities to extend that advantage during the first half.
“We did realise that as soon as we kept the ball to feet there were far more chances and our technique showed through. This was a crucial and deserved victory.”
The Bianconeri did not panic and eventually turned the match around completely with another Nedved strike eleven minutes from time.
“It is entirely possible to go a goal down in a match of this level,” continued the Coach, “but conceding early on gives you the chance to recover.”
Marco Di Vaio had started as the replacement for injured captain Alessandro Del Piero, but Juve really kicked into gear when Fabrizio Miccoli stepped on to the field.
“I substituted Di Vaio because I needed someone in a deeper role,” explained Lippi, “especially as David Trezeguet was already up there on the shoulders of the Olympiakos defenders.”
“Above all this is a satisfactory result because we showed character and patience, knowing full well we had the capability to overturn the scoreline.”
Juventus are the joint runaway leaders of Group D with six points alongside their next opponents Real Sociedad.
Former Bianconeri star Darko Kovacevic was on target for the Spaniards' 2-1 victory at Galatasaray this evening.

Pavel Nedved may have been the hero of the hour, but the typically humble Czech midfielder was unhappy with his performance.
“Apart from the goals I am not happy with the rest of my performance," he said after the 2-1 win at Olympiakos.
"I am still annoyed that I mis-placed a pass to David Trezeguet when he could have scored a second. There is always room for improvement.”
This is his third goal in the last two games, but Nedved insists he is not a leader in Turin.
“The goals are not important for me,” he added, “but they are crucial for the team on a difficult stage.”
“We suffered and never gave up, so I am content with the victory against a very tough opponent.”
As usual, Nedved rejected compliments and thought only of Juve’s victory as a club.
“I was lucky to score two goals and the players all believed in this result until the very end and were proved right.”
He took on several different positions in Athens and moved out wide to the left during the second half.
“It is easy to play for Juventus because this team can change tactic during the game and the whole side helps with that.”
The Bianconeri are joint top of Group D with Real Sociedad, as both are six points clear of the other contenders.
“Now we will face Real Sociedad at home and will try to seal our qualification as early as possible. That would be wonderful.”
This brace in Greece will have further boosted Nedved’s candidacy for the Golden Ball.
“I am not thinking about individual awards, but the team made a big step forward today.”
However, the Czech international did have a special dedication to make.
“I dedicate the goal to my father. He underwent surgery today and I hope that everything went well.”

Player Review!
here's my review on Juve players in the match..
Gigi Buffon (6/10)
Wasn't entirely at fault for the goal, as there were two players coming in for the header so he didn't know who was going to get the header. In the end he only made one save as Olympiakos did not have that many shots on goal.
Liliam Thuram (5.5/10)
Awful match by his high standards. At one point in game, he was completely out of position, beaten for pace by a olympiakos winger, then slips and lets the ball go into the pen. area. Plus he hardly ever went forward like he usually does because he was always been pinback, and when he did, it didnt amount to anything. But he did still get a few headers and string a few passes.
Nicola Leggrotaglie (9/10)
What a match he and montero played. They were the real reasons why he escaped Greece with all the points. Never let anything get past him and pulled out some great tackles to deny Olympiakos. And when he did make a rare error, he made up for it very convincingly.
Paolo Montero (8/10)
He too had a superb game at the back. Probably not as great a match as Nicola, but still very good. Paolo pulled of great tackles and blocks, especially one to Pontas when the latter was free to shoot on goal. But they were still worrying signs of his lost of pace when he was beaten by Castillo(who was verying impressive) and almost gave away a penalty.
Zambrotta (6.5/10)
He too was rather poor as our (attacking) fullbacks were almost useless in the match. He hardly pressed forward and when he did, he hardly did anything. He didnt defend that great either. On the positive side, he did pull of a few good tackles including that one on Pontas .
Alessio Tacchinardi and Stephan Appiah (7/10)
Both players werent theirselfs in the match. They didnt keep possesion well and thats why Olympiakos were so strong. They were beated by the spirited Kerembeu and co. Alessio as captain should have done better in my opinion. Appiah gave the ball away too cheaply and didnt work well with Thuram on the wing.
Edgar Davids (8/10)
Please keep him mr. Moggi. He was the only midfielder that played with heart. He never gave up and did his job well and broke up olympiakos game. Going forward he wasnt THAT great, but not terrible either. Good job Edgar!
Pavel Nedved (7.5/10)
Yes, i know he scored two great goals, but other than that, he was REALLY poor. He hardly passed the ball around like his usual self. And he never made any of those great runs he usually does. He was the culprit when he didnt play the ball fast enough to either Di Vaio, Trez or Davids when they beat the offside trap.
Marco Di Vaio (5/10)
Did nothing really. Nothing. He was completely invisible. Lippi did the right thing by bringing in a inspired Miccoli for marco.
David Trezeguet (6/10)
He was almost as bad as Di Vaio, but did better at holding up the ball and passing. But strikers arent rated for that.
Fabrizio Miccoli (8/10)
Did wonderfully when he come on for Di Vaio. Even his first touch was clever. Ran around chasing every Olympiakos pass and created for himself, unlike Di Vaio. Even hit the woodwork in a brilliant chip.
summary: that's why olympiakos played wonderfully. Most of Juve players just didnt perform. And too me, it look like we really missed Del Piero in that game. We lack that class in the final third that DP has. Di Vaio was supposed to do that, but failed miserably. We also lacked his leadership as well. Juve were shut-out by a much much more spirited display by the Greeks. We have to thank Nicola and Paolo for this point in my opinion.

Del Piero pens new deal
Juventus have announced that Alessandro Del Piero has signed a four-year contract extension.
The Bianconeri captain, who only had a year left on his current deal, is now tied to the club until 30 June 2008.
Del Piero had stated recently that he was close to agreeing terms and the Italian champions announced this morning that a deal was done.
The Italian international will net himself around £5.7m a season, of which around £1.6m will consist of image rights.
The former Padova youngster, who joined Juve in 1993, will now probably end his career in Turin as he will be 34 when his new agreement expires.

The guile of Fabrizio Miccoli will be Juve’s main weapon when they take on Carlo Mazzone’s experienced Bologna side.
The Bianconeri will rotate the squad following their Champions’ League win in Athens, so Miccoli and Mauro Camoranesi come in from the start.
“Mazzone’s teams know how to play football,” warned boss Marcello Lippi, “and try to impose their style and tempo on the game.”
The veteran Coach has returned to Bologna after several successful seasons at Brescia and has often frustrated Juventus in Serie A.
“Bologna certainly won’t come to Turin in order to defend,” continued Lippi. “They have been struggling of late, but that can only act as a spur for these players.”
The Rossoblu lost the local derby 2-0 at Modena last Sunday and got a Coppa Italia shock with a 3-2 defeat at Serie C2 outfit Brindisi.
However, Juventus have their own problems to contend with, as the injury list is growing longer.
Alessandro Del Piero is out until mid-November with a calf strain, while Alessandro Birindelli and Igor Tudor also suffered similar problems.
“We must sit down with the club doctors and try to understand what is causing all of these muscular injuries,” noted the Coach. “These fitness worries are beginning to pile up.”
Pavel Nedved is rarely ruled out through injury and will start in support of David Trezeguet alongside Fabrizio Miccoli and Mauro Camoranesi.
It is likely that Stephan Appiah will be left on the bench in favour of Edgar Davids and Alessio Tacchinardi.

Serie A Week 5 - 5/10/03 (15.00)
Juventus - Bologna
Stadio Delle Alpi
Juventus have on paper the easiest task of all the Scudetto contenders this weekend and it is an opportunity to break away at the top of the table.
The Bianconeri have built their success at the Stadio Delle Alpi and will certainly be the favourites to emerge with three points. Another squad rotation is expected following the Champions’ League trip to Olympiakos, but that certainly did not harm their performance at Reggio Calabria last week.
Marco Di Vaio and Fabrizio Miccoli are tipped to start – as both are Italian internationals they are hardly to be considered part of the ‘second string’ side – while Gianluca Zambrotta and the indefatigable Pavel Nedved may be among those rested.
Bologna are struggling to get into gear after changing management just days before the start of the campaign. Carlo Mazzone’s tactics are based on a tireless work ethic, one which can often stifle the big clubs on their own turf, but so far his men are not delivering the goods.
Tomas Locatelli does tend to spice up their attack when he does come on and fans will be praying his myriad of injury problems do not flare up again during the week. Beppe Signori is the star striker, but is yet to score this season.
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Ferrara, Iuliano, Zambrotta; Maresca, Tacchinardi, Davids; Nedved; Miccoli, Di Vaio
Bologna (probable): Pagliuca; Zaccardo, Natali, Juarez, Moretti; Nervo, Dalla Bona, Pecchia, Guly; Signori, Rossini

Serie A Preview: Juventus v Bologna
BACKGROUND:
Sunday afternoon, Juventus will face Bologna at the 'Stadio delle Alpi' of Turin in an attempt to start the first run away of the season, considering both Milan and Roma face daunting tasks against Inter and Siena respectively.
Juventus and Bologna have played 61 matches against each other in Turin, the last of which ended 1-1 with goals coming from Giuseppe Signori, from a penalty, and a late equalizer by Mark Iuliano.
The last Juventus win was on 3rd March 2002 (2-1), while the last Bologna win in Turin was on the 5th October 1980, when Paris scored the decisive goal from a penalty. Overall, Juventus won 34 matches, Bologna won 4 matches and a draw figured for 23 times.
Bologna, who are led by the eternal Carlo Mazzone, started off the season in poor fashion. In fact from 4 matches played, they only obtained a win and a draw, both at home so their away record does not inspire too much optimism ahead of this match.
Juventus come from an important away victory in the Champions League, which edges them closer to the last 16 of this competition. In the league they are sharing first spot along with Roma and Milan, so it all looks for the Old Lady.
Statistically, this is the period where Marcello Lippi's Juventus has mostly suffered in these past 2 seasons in terms of results, so the bianconeri should not take this encounter lightly. However this year Lippi has at his disposal more depth to rotate players and let his main men rest in the less important matches. Expect Lippi to make use of the turnover for this match.
LATEST TEAM NEWS:
Juventus: Along with the injured Alessandro Del Piero, Lippi will have to be without his fragile giant Tudor, who injured his calf once again and will be out for a month. Conte and Oliveira are still out as well.
Bologna: Mazzone has all of his players at his disposal, bar Meghni, who is out for the next 3 weeks.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS:
Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Birindelli, Ferrara, Iuliano, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Davids; Nedved; Di Vaio, Trezeguet
Bologna (4-4-2): Pagliuca; Zaccardo, Natali, Juarez, Moretti; Nervo, Pecchia, Dalla Bona, Locatelli; Signori, Rossini
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Pavel Nedved (Juventus): 3 goals in the last 2 matches have brought back the Nedved of last year, where he always produces great matches whenever he plays. Rest assured he will once again be decisive for Juve's season.
Giuseppe Signori (Bologna): He might be getting older, but his goal instinct is still always dangerous. Ferrara will have to be on guard at all times when facing the ex-Lazio striker.

Juventus 2 - 1 Bologna

Stadio Delle Alpi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Trezeguet's late penalty proved the difference between these two teams, but it was a real battle in Turin.
Juventus had the opportunity to break away with what was on paper the easiest task of all the leaders. Fabrizio Miccoli and Mauro Camoranesi stepped in to rest Marco Di Vaio.
Bologna have had mixed results since Carlo Mazzone took over, but his sides have always provided tough tests for the big clubs. The Rossoblu had the first real chance on six minutes when Fausto Rossini somehow turned a free header wide at the back post from eight yards.
Tomas Locatelli was substituted just sixteen minutes into the game after the injury-stricken creative midfielder pulled up with a thigh problem.
Juventus eventually broke the deadlock in curious circumstances. A Pavel Nedved cross went past the entire Bologna defence and accidentally ricocheted into the net off Mark Iuliano's shoulder.
However, that spot of luck was cancelled out almost immediately as less than a minute later Bologna were awarded a penalty. Carlo Nervo's mazy run was halted by a Nicola Legrottaglie foul and Beppe Signori stepped up to slam it into the roof of the net.
Juve poured forward and left room for the counter-attack, as Gianluigi Buffon stung his palms with a fierce Signori effort.
Miccoli tested Gianluca Pagliuca's reflexes with a similar finish after a good combination with David Trezeguet.
Pagliuca may be one of the oldest goalkeepers in Serie A but he certainly had a spring in his step when he flew to palm out a wickedly deflected Edgar Davids drive.
Juventus had the better of the play, but simply could not convert their chances with Trezeguet and Alessio Tacchinardi particularly wasteful.
Enzo Maresca was unlucky not to grab the winner when his powerful drive was punched away by another stunning Pagliuca intervention.
Twelve minutes from time Gianluca Zambrotta fell under a challenge from Christian Zaccardo and the referee pointed to the spot. Trezeguet stepped up and fired in the penalty to give Juventus the lead.
Bologna refused to give in and in stoppage time Ighli Tare's close-range effort was deflected inches over the bar by Legrottaglie.
Juve had the opportunity to close down any chance of a comeback when Marco Di Vaio's counter-attack was fingertipped into the path of Trezeguet, but the Frenchman somehow ballooned over an open goal from eight yards.

Ratings:
Buffon - Doesn't seem to be at his best although he could do nothing about Signori's penalty kick. Gigi performed a nice save on a Signori long-range effort but still doesn't appear to be in form. 6
Thuram - His best performance this season IMO. Some nice interceptions, tackles and passes but there's still room for improvement for Lilian. 6.5
Legrottaglie - The former Chievo man has settled in at Juve now and was very solid today. Aerial wise he has few rivals and technically he's a step above most central defenders. Legro's only error on this occasion was the late challenge that gave away the penalty. 7
Iuliano - Relatively solid but not as good as Legrottaglie. Thanks for the goal Marco Boy! 6.5
Zambrotta - Another impressive performance. Zambro was very good on the attack especially in the second half and did well to earn us the peno. 7
Camoranesi - Camo made a useful contribution with his mazy runs and crosses. Slowly but surely Mauro seems to be refinding his early season form of 2001. 6.5
Tacchinardi - Solid defensively and a good distributor of the ball. Tacchi showed alot of leadership as captain today but somewhat marred his good performance with a silly yellow card. 6.5
Davids - Edgar had a great start to the game and I was surprised when he was subbed. Hopefully the pitbull is returning to form. 6.5
Nedved - Some nice moves here and there but Neddy's displays are still lacking something. Did well to set up the opening goal but he can do better. 6.5
Miccoli - Micco was our best player in the first 45 minutes IMO and I was thoroughly disappointed when he was replaced and not Trezeguet. Lippi continues to surprise me. 6.5
Trezeguet - What can I say? Completely invisible in the first half and not much better in the second. Trezeguet is way too static and seeing his performance today I find it hard to say that he's still a good finisher. He probably deserves 4.5 but because he scored I'll give him 0.5 more. 5
Di Vaio - Wasn't able to make the impact that he did against Roma or Reggina, but Marco was still much better than his strike partner. We're missing Del Piero IMHO. 6
Maresca - It was great to see him on the pitch and next year he HAS to be part of the starting line-up. Enzo linked up well with Tacchi and Neddy and was unfortunate not to get his name on the scoresheet. 6.5
Appiah - Another effective run-out. Appiah is effective whether you play him in the middle or on the right and linked up well with Thuram today. 6.5
Lippi - Although Maresca and Appiah did well, Lippi's choices were very strange IMO. For some reason the master tactician replaced our three best first half players.
Important Points:
+ Even though Treze did well to score from the penalty and win us the match, he was still disappointing to his own standards, that's why he didn't even celebrate the goal he scored ..
+ Maresca proved again that he has great vision, his passing was impeccable and almost made the difference upon his introduction ..
+ Thuram is back It wasn't a 'perfect' match for him, but he has greatly improved since the start of the season ..
+ Iuliano proved to be Pagliuca's favourite customer He even scored a goal with his shoudler !!
+ Del Piero was watching the match from the stands with his girlfriend, and made a lap of honour to the fans before the match started, celebrating his stay with Juve for another 5 years
+ I think Guidolin was a better-suited coach for Bologna than the current Mazzone, even though Carlo has great experience but he's way too obssessed with defence .. he should try to open up his tactics and play more flowinf football, especially with players like Nervo, Locatelli and Signori ..

Juventus forward David Trezeguet has criticised his own performance in the 2-1 win over Bologna.
"I have rarely played that badly in my career," said the Frenchman who did score the winner from the penalty spot.
"It wasn’t great from me and I’m not satisfied. I should have scored a couple but it wasn’t my day and I don’t know what happened."
Trezeguet had started the campaign in decent form before his performance at the Delle Alpi on Sunday.
"I wasn’t pretty to watch," he added. "I have to take responsibility for the fact that we didn’t capitalise on the chances we created."
However, the French international maintains that he will return to his old self in Juventus’ next League game.
"I’ll look to be at my best against Ancona where I will aim to score as many goals as possible," he added.
Meanwhile, some wild speculation suggests that the Bianconeri are ready to wave goodbye to the striker.
Reports suggest that Juventus will offer cash and Trezeguet, whose deal expires in 2005, to Man Utd next summer in exchange for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

10/06/2003. Speculation in Italy suggests that Juventus may be preparing an assault to lure Ruud Van Nistelrooy towards the Turin based club.
In order to obtain his services, the Old Lady is prepared to offer to Manchester United, David Trezeguet plus an amount of money to reach Van Nistelrooy's 50 million Euros tag.
However, both the player and his current club will be difficult to convince: Van Nistelrooy is already well paid and has built a reputation of a great goal scorer in England; Manchester United have in Ruud, one of the best strikers ever to have worn the Red Devils jersey.
On the other hand, Manchester United might be tempted to get Trezeguet, seeing how his fellow French national player, Thierry Henry, exploded on to the world scene with his arrival from Juventus to Arsenal.
In fact this might be Juve's only hope for the deal to go through, but before the end of the season there will be more on going speculation regarding this possible but improbable transfer.

10/07/2003. The Czech midfielder Marek Jankulovski, who's considered by many as Pavel Nedved's natural heir, is said to be very close to joining Juventus next season.
The Udinese and Juve executives are thought to be meeting next week to define the transfer which has been suggested by Nedved himself.
The Italian champions are trying to anticipate any possible obstacles that other interested teams might create. In fact Milan, Inter, Valencia, Liverpool and Arsenal are thought to be following the player quite closely, so Juve transfer guru Luciano Moggi is trying to hurry up in signing the player before the other teams.

Pavel Nedved may follow in the footsteps of Alex Del Piero by extending his contract with Italian giants Juventus.
Del Piero agreed a new deal which will run until 2008 last week and the Czech ace is set to make a similar move.
Nedved’s current deal doesn’t expire until 2006 but the Bianconeri are keen to keep him at the Delle Alpi for two more seasons.
The former Lazio star has openly admitted on numerous occasions that he wants to end his career with Juventus and that is looking increasingly likely.
There were fears amongst Juventus fans that Nedved could leave the club with Chelsea ready to open their chequebook for the player.
Sources in Turin also suggest that two more first team regulars are about to be offered longer contracts.
Left-back Gianluca Zambrotta, whose current deal ends in 2005, and goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, 2006, will be asked to commit themselves to the club.

Juve maintain Lucio chase
Juventus have reportedly reopened talks for Bayer Leverkusen stopper Lucio. While Inter are also targeting a German based player.
The Italian champions were associated with a swoop for the Brazilian (pictured) in the summer after he rejected a move to Roma.
Speculation back then suggested that the Bianconeri had agreed a fee of 14m Euros for the player who would arrive in the summer of 2004.
Now reports on Thursday claim that Juve have started negotiations to complete the move as Chelsea have also expressed an interest in the World Cup winner.
Juventus are looking to bring in a new central defender with Ciro Ferrara and Paolo Montero coming to the end of their careers.

There are reports that Juventus are aiming to register Parma defender Matteo Ferrari for next season.
The club had previously been heavily linked with a bid for Bayer Leverkusen stopper Lucio.
However, the interest from Chelsea looks set to outbid them, and Juve may drop the Brazilian in favour of a younger model.
Ferrari may be just 23 years old, but he has been a Serie A regular since his 1999-2000 campaign with Bari.
Born in Algeria, he made his mark with the Under-21 squad and is now an active member of Giovanni Trapattoni’s senior Azzurri side.
Ferrari would be considerably cheaper than the £10m-rated Lucio and Parma could cut the price further if Brescia defender Dario Dainelli were included in the deal.
Juventus are also busily tracking Gialloblu hitman Alberto Gilardino, who was on target twice in the Azzurrini’s 6-0 demolition of Azerbaijan last night.
However, they face competition from a group of Premiership clubs, including Middlesbrough, who sent their scouts to watch that Under-21 European Championship qualifier.

Daniel Fonseca? Is he the Uraguay striker?
David Trezeguet is ready to extend his current contract with Italian champions Juventus.
The Frenchman only has 18 months left to run on his present deal and is keen to continue playing his club football in Turin.
"Now that Alessandro Del Piero has signed an extension, it is now David’s turn to do the same," said agent Daniel Fonseca.
"The player is calm about the situation and is patiently waiting for negotiations to begin.
"He is happy in Turin. He believes in the plans of this club and is very interested in renewing his relationship."
Trezeguet has been keen on a new salary improved deal for some time but Juventus have made him wait.
It is believed that they are ready to satisfy his requests so long as his wage demands are not deemed too excessive.
If talks break down then a move to the Premiership would be likely after numerous clubs have been linked with his services.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a massive fan of the former Monaco man, while Trezeguet was recently associated with a move to Man Utd.
Stories suggested that Juventus would offer cash and the player to the Old Trafford outfit in exchange for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Alessandro Del Piero is targeting a return to action in the November clash against Udinese.
The Juventus man suffered a calf strain last month but he is confident that he will soon be available for selection.
"The physiotherapy is going well," said the No 10. "In theory, I should be ready for November 9."
That comes as a massive boost to the Italian champions after Del Piero’s impressive performances in 2003.
However, the Delle Alpi captain is quick to dismiss speculation that he is a candidate to win the 2003 Golden Ball.
"If they give it to me then I would obviously be delighted," he added. "But I don’t think I’m in the race.
"Losing the Champions’ League and suffering this injury has excluded me from the chase."
The Italian international was also asked for his thoughts on the Azzurri after they qualified for Euro 2004.
"Boss Giovanni Trapattoni realised where we had problems and fixed them," he added. "We are in great shape right now.
"The only problem seems to be that Trap is spoilt for choice. But I’m not about to give up my shirt."

Just read an interview Lippi made last night where he talked about everything that happened in these past years from Juve to Inter to CL finals to the different players...let me summarise what he said..
- Playing 5 Finals (4 CL + 1 Uefa)in these past 9 years is no joke, it means dominating the scene
- If we arrive to another CL Final I would break a record of 5 CL Finals played. I might even go sit down in the stands for good luck sake.
- After Juventu, I`ll definitely will not coach another Italian team, however I will be happy to coach the Italian NT.
- DP is our flag, just like Buffon and Nedved.
- For the Golden Ball I will nominate Nedved and Buffon. I will not nominate DP cos he was injured for some time.
- The loss at Manchester is a wound that will never heal.
- When I was at Inter, I would think about Juve's inimitable organisation and that they were the team to beat.
- I was nervous at Inter, but that's cos of the environemnt you're in. I'm calmer here at Juve.
- Vieri left on his own will; we never wanted him to leave.
- Davids will leave either in January or June. He's an important player but that's that.
- I got to schools and they ask me if it's the executive's fault that players tend to simulate. I reply by asking the children if they are running towards goal, hit the ball with their hand but the ref doesn't see it, would they still stop before scoring? They all reply no; that shows that the cunningness in football exists from when you're a kid.

Lippi to unleash Miccoli Tuesday 14 October, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus boss Marcello Lippi is expected to rest a number of key players in Saturday¡¦s game at Ancona.
The biggest benefactor is set to be summer signing Fabrizio Miccoli who is looking to score his first official goal for the club.
The pint-sized striker should partner Marco Di Vaio in attack, with David Trezeguet being relegated to the bench in preparation for the Real Sociedad Champions¡¦ League game.
Miccoli has had an unfortunate start to the season after he had to have his appendix removed just hours after the Week 1 game against Empoli.
The Bianconeri returned to training on Tuesday where Lippi had pretty much all of his squad at his disposal.
Alessandro Del Piero was obviously missing as he is still receiving treatment on a calf strain he suffered last month.
Defender Nicola Legrottaglie is also struggling for fitness and he is unlikely to be risked against Ancona.
His place in the starting line-up could be taken by Mark Iuliano who has rarely featured so far this term.

The Argentine winger has made a real impact with the Flying Donkeys this term and caught the eye against the Italian champions last month.

David Trezeguet has pledged to join French legends Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane as one of the all-time greats at Juventus.
Celebrating his 26th birthday, the France striker expressed his determination to be remembered as fondly by the Juve faithful as his peerless compatriots.
"I want to stay with Juve for a long time - I would like to extend my contract and finish my career here," he told www.gazzetta.it.
"I want to achieve the same things here as Platini and Zidane."
Masterful midfielder Platini scored 104 goals for the Turin giants between 1982 and 1987, winning two league championships and one European Cup along the way.
And while Zidane did not boast such an impressive goal-record during his spell in Turin between 1996 and 2001, his numerous assists and matchwinning performances were priceless as Juve clinched two league championships and several international honours during that period.
But Trezeguet is well on the way to matching those achievements.
Since moving to the Stadio Delle Alpi after Euro 2000, he has managed an impressive 64 goals for the 'Old Lady' of Italian football.
He was a key member of the Scudetto-winning squad in each of the last two seasons after losing the title narrowly to Roma during his first year at the club.
Add Trezeguet's World Cup and European Championship winners medals in 1998 and 2000 respectively and it is easy to see why he is acknowledged as one of the most successful footballers of the modern era.
But the powerful forward, who grew up in Argentina before returning to his native France to join Monaco in 1995, admits there is still one honour he craves as he strives for even greater achievement.
"I want to win the Champions League," he admitted.
"If I could manage that and score a few more goals along the way, it would be perfect."

Serie A Week 6 - 18/10/03 (20.30)
Ancona - Juventus
Live on British Eurosport (7.30pm UK time)
Stadio Del Conero
Juventus are odds on favourites to take all three points from the bottom of the table club. The Bianconeri are joint top with Milan and have the perfect opportunity to take flight on the weekend that their rivals face Lazio.
Alessandro Del Piero and Alessandro Birindelli remain sidelined, so Fabrizio Miccoli will be given the nod alongside Marco Di Vaio with David Trezeguet likely to be rested. Nicola Legrottaglie is also set to miss the game with a calf problem.
The controversy is still raging from Gianluca Zambrotta’s admission he dived to win a penalty against Bologna, so the referee for this encounter will perhaps think twice before awarding a spot-kick.
Ancona have picked up just one point from their opening five games and fired Coach Leonardo Menichini. New boss Nedo Sonetti has had a fortnight to work with the side now and they can only improve on the comical performance that saw Udinese win 3-0 away from home.
Sonetti looks set to stick with the ex-Piacenza trio of Eusebio Di Francesco, Paolo Poggi and Dario Hubner, but it is the defence that risks a humiliating scoreline with the pace of Miccoli and Pavel Nedved.
Ancona (probable): Scarpi; Daino, Bilica, Viali, Milanese; Sommese, Carrus, Maini, Di Francesco; Hubner, Poggi
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Ferrara, Iuliano, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Davids; Nedved; Di Vaio, Miccoli

Pavel Nedved and Paolo Maldini are the main contenders for the 2003 Golden Ball according to Juventus star Lilian Thuram.
"I would give it to Nedved," said the stopper. "He is a player that can make a real difference to any side.
"He has also made a massive contribution to the recent success which Juventus have enjoyed."
The Czech midfielder does seem to be one of the leading candidates to lift the award but Maldini is also being heavily touted as a possible winner.
"Maldini has done some wonderful things," continued the Frenchman. "He should be given it as recognition for his career and what he represents in this sport."
Thuram was also asked to comment on the possibility that TV evidence could be used to punish divers.
"It could be useful if it is used in the correct manner," he added. "But I don’t think it would necessarily put a stop to the controversy.
"The best thing for this sport is if all footballers decided to respect all the rules of the game on the pitch."

Fabrizio Miccoli is looking to score his first League goal for Juventus against Ancona on Saturday.
The pint-sized striker is expected to partner Marco Di Vaio at the Del Conero after fully recovering from surgery.
The summer signing from Perugia was rushed to hospital after the Week 1 game against Empoli to have his appendix removed.
But Miccoli maintains that he is now fit enough to make an impact with the Italian champions again.
"It’s not easy to be left out on the sidelines but I’m getting back my best form," said the former Ternana man.
"I’ve been working well in training recently and I hope to be the player that was on show in pre-season.
"It is my intention to score my first official goal for Juventus on Saturday but I would even be content with giving an assist to Di Vaio.
"After all, the most important thing is not who scores so long as Juventus win. The result is all that counts."

Pavel Nedved has denied telling a Czech newspaper that Chelsea had contacted him this summer.
“The interest from Chelsea is real and I can confirm that,” he was quoted in newspaper ‘Sport’.
“I am happy in Turin, but you can never say never in the football world,” added the Juventus star.
Nedved is one of the favourites to lift the Golden Ball this season after taking Juve to the Scudetto and Champions’ League Final, while the Czech Republic qualified for Euro 2004.
But he denied ever giving this interview and pledged his future to the Bianconeri.
“I have never received an offer from Chelsea,” announced Nedved late Friday evening.
“Even if I had been made a proposal by the Stamford Bridge outfit, I still want to end my career at Juventus.”
There are reports that Roman Abramovich is willing to place a £27m bid on the table for the midfielder.
Considering the fact Nedved is now 31 years old and his contract will expire in 2006, Juventus may just give this offer some serious thought.
“We have not received any bids from Chelsea,” added Director General Luciano Moggi. “Even if we had, the club would certainly have turned it down.”

Yes...another win!! :) Miccoli!!!!
Serie A Week 6 - 18/10/03 (20.30)
Ancona 2 - 3 Juventus
Miccoli 29, 49 (J), Zambrotta 44 (J), Viali 57 (A), Ganz 90 (A)
Stadio Del Conero
Fabrizio Miccoli's brace saw Juve safely through at the Stadio Del Conero, but Ancona gave them a late scare.
Juventus rested several of their top stars for this trip to Serie A strugglers Ancona, but fielded the lively front two of Fabrizio Miccoli and Marco Di Vaio.
The pair combined effectively after six minutes when Di Vaio volleyed the ex-Perugia man's sweeping cross just wide of the near post.
Moments later a deflected Miccoli free kick clipped the crossbar, but there was a slight scare for Juve when Dario Hubner was stopped by a controversial offside decision.
The Bianconeri pushed early on and it took a magnificent flying save from Alessio Scarpi to tip Gianluca Zambrotta's deflected drive over the bar.
Yet it was Ancona who went closest to opening the scoring on 25 minutes. Paolo Poggi's chipped cross was about to reach Vincenzo Sommese before Paolo Montero's desperate and acrobatic goalline clearance.
Ancona were also called into a goalline clearance, but Sommese only managed to reach Miccoli's effort after it had already gone in. The pint-sized international gathered a Stephan Appiah corner kick and swept in on the half-hour mark.
That was Miccoli's first Serie A goal in a Juventus shirt, but Sommese was lucky the ball went in so he wasn't red-carded for handling on the line.
The Bianconeri took absolute control and Miccoli had a hand in their spectacular second. He touched a corner kick back to Zambrotta for a fearsome and simply unstoppable drive into the top corner.
The two goalscorers combined to close the game beyond doubt at the dawn of the second half. Within three minutes a Zambrotta cross had found Miccoli's diving header from six yards.
Ancona had the opportunity to take advantage of Juve's relaxed attitude soon after, but Poggi fired straight at Gianluigi Buffon. It proved to be his last move of the game, as Maurizio Ganz took over moments later.
It proved an inspired substitution, as Ganz swept in a cross for Hubner's header, forcing Buffon into a save. On the resulting corner kick William Viali leapt on to another Ganz cross at the near post to give Ancona some hope of a comeback.
Eusebio Di Francesco led by example and drilled a low effort just wide, while a close-range Ganz volley slammed the near post with Buffon beaten.
There was controversy on 73 minutes when Ganz was booked for diving, but replays suggest there might have been a push from Montero.
Hubner had managed to hit the back of the net with a well struck volley, but the linesman correctly disallowed the goal for an offside position.
David Trezeguet had the opportunity to score Juve's fourth, but incredibly turned Miccoli's cross over an open goal.
Miccoli then missed his hat-trick with a low angled drive that skimmed the far post.
Ancona refused to give in and Ganz set up a tense stoppage time showdown by bagging their second of the game. The veteran sprung the offside trap and sidefooted it past Buffon to make the scoreline 3-2.
Ancona: Scarpi; Bilica, Viali, Milanese; Russo (Berretta 69), Carrus, Andersson, Lombardi; Sommese (Di Francesco 52), Poggi (Ganz 52); Hubner
Juventus: Buffon; Birindelli, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah (Iuliano 76), Tacchinardi (Conte 69), Maresca, Davids; Miccoli, Di Vaio (Trezeguet 66)

Juventus are ready to send midfielder Ruben Oliveira to Ancona in January.
The Uruguayan attracted the interest of Bolton in the summer and has failed to make a first team impact in Turin.
Juve and Ancona officials took advantage of yesterday's match to discuss a January loan move for Oliveira.

Any LIVE telecast on this game on Wednesday morning?
hmmmm.... interesting game.
If we win this, Juve ensure qualification no matter what. After that its only a matter of finishing top of the group.
Sociedad have a strong midfield and attack. They managed to hold on to all their key players during the transfer window. Nihat, Xabi alonso, De Pedro, Karpin, Kovacevic ,Aranzabal and of course Westerveld in goal - Thats a strong lineup right there.
Keeping Nihat quiet will be the key. Kovacevic requires service to produce goals... so Juve need to keep tabs on De Pedro and Karpin. Karpin may not be pacey or skillful but he gives a 100% every game.
Sociedad haven't lost in their last 3 games with victories against Zaragoza, Olympiakos and Racing Santander. their last loss was against Athletico Bilbao a while ago.
in La Liga, they have conceded just 4 goals in 6 games. So their defense is pretty solid although they haven't played real Quality opposition yet.
As for Juve, my main worry is the defense. It looks sluggish from time to time and Thuram just hasn't been himself lately. We really need to sign a young solid defender during the January transfer window. Anyway, i still think its more than enough to hold Sociedad at bay for 90 minutes. We will score - i have no doubts about that. We are full of goals these days. Will Del Piero be missed ? I hope not. Miccoli is good with set pieces and is the ideal replacement. I hope Lippi plays Miccoli and Di Vaio up front although i think its gonna be Di Vaio and Trez. I sure hope Miccoli doesn't play on the right side of midfield - Camo can do that job. After Miccoli's two goals against Ancona over the weekend, let's hope Lippi pick him instead of the off-form Trez.
And of course, Nedved is gonna be a huge factor versus Sociedad. I hope we don't score too early as we tend to fall back and concede - after that its playing catchup for the rest of the game.
Prediction ? 2-1 to Juve :)
FORZA JUVE !

A victory for Juventus against Real Sociedad on Tuesday is a necessity according to Gianluca Zambrotta.
Both teams have collected two wins from two games in their Champions’ League group but the Italian defender is desperate for another victory.
"We are level on points with them so we must get that home win," said the Italian international.
"If we can get another three points then we would almost be certain of qualification which means we could then just focus on Serie A for a while."
Zambrotta is currently one of Juventus’ most in form players at the minute after finding the net in the 3-2 win at Ancona.
"I always try to score," said the left-back. "Sometimes I manage it and other times I don’t. I can still improve because you never stop learning in this game.
"The Ancona match was difficult towards the end as we were coasting at 3-0. But we won because we were determined too. That is our great strength."
The good news for Juventus is that Pavel Nedved will be fit for the Real game. He missed the Ancona victory with a slight problem.
While Igor Tudor and Nicola Legrottaglie will both face fitness tests on Monday to see whether they will be available for selection

after the morning training that ended an hour ago, the following news have come out:
- Legro will not play cos he has not recovered yet.
- Lippi announced that Miccoli will start as a reserve so the front two will be DV and Trez
- Uefa just officially assigned Juve's second goal against Gala to DP instead of Ferrara
So here's the probable formation according to today's training and what Lippi's said:

Thuram--Montero--Iuliano--Zambrotta
---Camoranesi--Tacchinardi--Davids---
---------------------Nedved-----------------

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi has confirmed that he will play his best men against Real Sociedad on Tuesday.
The tactician rested a number of his first team regulars for the 3-2 win at Ancona on Saturday but they will return at the Delle Alpi in the Champions’ League clash.
"I will make a number of changes to the team that played at the Del Conero," said the Coach. "I have a full squad to pick from apart from Alex Del Piero and Nicola Legrottaglie."
Pavel Nedved and Lilian Thuram will return after they were rested over the weekend. While David Trezeguet will feature after he started on the bench against Ancona.
The Frenchman is set to play alongside Marco Di Vaio, with Fabrizio Miccoli – two goals at the weekend – relegated to the bench.
The Italian champions are looking good for qualification after two wins out of two, like Real, but Lippi is not getting too excited.
"Until qualification is mathematically secure then I won’t comment on the next round," added the tactician.
"There are still four games left to go and the clash against Real Sociedad won’t be an easy match for us."
Lippi also commented on the sacking of Inter boss Hector Cuper. "I’ve spoken to him on a number of occasions and he seemed like an excellent person," said Lippi.
"Cuper had never been sacked before but these things happen. I hope that he can soon get back into the game."
Meanwhile, UEFA have assigned Juventus’ second goal against Galatasaray to Del Piero. It was initially awarded to Ciro Ferrara in the 2-1 win.
Juventus probable: Buffon; Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah, Davids, Tacchinardi; Nedved, Di Vaio, Trezeguet

The best and the rest.....
The best…
Gennaro Gattuso (Milan)
Chelsea’s Claude Makelele is a dwarf compared to today’s Gennaro Gattuso. Even Edgar Davids hasn’t got the spark which the Milan man has. Gattuso retrieves balls in every corner of the pitch and has made incredible progress in recent seasons. He deserves the appreciation that the Rossoneri fans illustrate every time he touches the ball.
Gianluca Zambrotta (Juventus)
He’s the best left-back in circulation. An immense athlete, Zambrotta is also catching the eye for his tactical sense of positioning. It is as if he’s been a defender for all of his life. Last year we criticised Marcello Lippi for ‘robbing’ Italian football of a winger but the tactician seems to have been proved right.
Daniele De Rossi (Roma)
His piece of skill, just before he crossed the ball for Walter Samuel to open the scoring against Parma, was a joy to watch. He controlled the ball as if he was Diego Maradona, he moved away from the defender as if he was Thierry Henry. This boy will go a long way, even if talk of a call-up for Euro 2004 may be too premature. He’s now a first team regular with Roma in Serie A at the age of 20. That says everything.
The rest…
Fabio Cannavaro (Inter)
Inter decided to keep him in the summer instead of buying Cristian Chivu from Ajax. But we are still waiting to see the very best from the Italian defender. He was beaten far too easily by Andrea Caracciolo, who is no Ruud Van Nistelrooy, at Brescia on Saturday.
Dejan Stankovic (Lazio)
He’s undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in circulation but he is not making the difference for his team this season. A player of his ability should really be more instrumental than he was against Milan on Sunday.
Francesco Toldo (Inter)
Everyone makes mistakes but Francesco Toldo has made a few in recent weeks. He doesn’t seem secure between the sticks anymore and he was at fault for gifting Roberto Baggio the opener in the 2-2 draw at Brescia. A player of his quality and experience should really know better.

Champions' League Phase One, Gp D - 21/10/03
Juventus 4 - 2 Real Sociedad
Trezeguet 3, 63 (J), Di Vaio 7, 45 (J), Tudor og 67 (R), De Pedro 80 (R)
Stadio Delle Alpi
A stunning Juventus slammed four goals past Real Sociedad to take a commanding lead in Group D.
The two teams were joint leaders with six points apiece going into this game, but both their 100 per cent records could not be maintained after this showdown.
The Bianconeri left Fabrizio Miccoli and Edgar Davids on the bench and opted to stick with Marco Di Vaio as a partner to David Trezeguet. Paolo Montero dropped out with an injury problem at the last minute, so Igor Tudor and Mark Iuliano were in central defence.
Real Sociedad were the surprise team in Spain last season and had a familiar face in former Juventus striker Darko Kovacevic. Surprisingly, Kahveci Nihat and Javier De Pedro were left on the bench to begin with.
Juve broke the deadlock by snapping open Sociedad's offside trap within two and a half minutes of the match. Mauro Camoranesi intelligently threaded through for Trezeguet and he dribbled round former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld to score. The Frenchman has been on poor form recently and nets his first Champions' League goal of the season.
The Bianconeri had a very strong start to the game and Camoranesi turned a free header wide of the near post soon after, but the second goal arrived moments later.
Marco Di Vaio gathered the ball out wide on the left - again on the edge of the offside line - from Pavel Nedved's long pass and slammed in an angled drive from the edge of the box. It was a magnificent finish similar to the one Di Vaio scored for the Italy squad in the recent 4-0 hammering of Azerbaijan.
The Basque side fought back and Gianluigi Buffon tipped a Potillon free kick over the bar, but Westerveld was forced to rush off his line and clear when Di Vaio sprung the offside trap again.
There was a well-worked move on 33 minutes concluded by a Camoranesi drive that skimmed the woodwork, then Di Vaio's acrobatic volley was deflected wide.
Trezeguet really should have made it three before the break, but his weak effort on a fantastic Di Vaio cutback was palmed over the bar.
Di Vaio decided to take matters into his own hands and in first half stoppage time rose to nod in a Gianluca Zambrotta cross from the byline.
The second half started in much the same vein, as Di Vaio's bullet header skimmed the crossbar, while Alkiza drilled a fearsome effort inches over.
Real tried to fight back with a period of sustained pressure, but Juventus struck with a perfect counter-attack. Nedved cut the Sociedad defence in two with a cross-field pass to Trezeguet and the finish left Westerveld with no chance.
Juventus were so eager to score goals that they managed to turn one into their own net. Igor Tudor accidentally toe-poked a fairly harmless low cross past Buffon to give Sociedad at least a consolation goal.
It may have been a gift from the Bianconeri, but this goal and the introduction of Javier De Pedro sparked a fightback from the visitors and Buffon was forced into his first real save on Kovacevic.
There were also more chances for the Bianconeri with Di Vaio's effort charged down and a Lilian Thuram piledriver just over the bar.
De Pedro changed Sociedad's entire approach to the game and curled in a magnificent free kick from the edge of the box to make it 4-2.
Juventus had taken their foot off the gas when 3-0 up at Ancona on Saturday and eventually held on for a 3-2 victory, but they risked allowing the Spaniards to re-open the game in the final minutes.
Zambrotta almost bagged a fifth in stoppage time when his low drive was beaten away, while at the other end Buffon performed a desperate one-handed save on Nihat after a Paolo Montero error.
Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Iuliano, Tudor (Montero 75), Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Davids 66), Tacchinardi, Appiah; Nedved; Trezeguet, Di Vaio (Birindelli 83)
Real Sociedad: Westerveld; Potillon, Jauregi, Schurrer, Gabilondo; Karpin, Alkiza, Xabi Alonso (Aranburu 81), Gabilondo; Kovacevic (Nihat 73), Lee Choo Soo (De Pedro 66)

I'll write quick reviews, no ratings though
Buffon: not a very Buffon performance. It's worrying that our only clean sheet this season has come against Reggina He could have prevented that free kick from going in, and he was caught out badly on a corner, and Camo had to save him. Made a couple of good saves though, I thought Nihat would score.
Thuram: decent, though he was caught out of position a few times, and didn't look as solid, though he did make some good tackles.
Iuliano: didn't make any silly mistakes, except for that yellow card offence. He read the game decently and maintained his composure when Sociedad were attacking
Tudor: except for the own goal, Tudor had a good performance IMO. Had a good presence in the box, especially when those long balls came in for Kovacevic
Zambro: good performance. He made a few good runs down the wing, though his crossing seemed a tad off today. Good in defence and he showed again that he's a great holder of the ball. Nice dribbling, he really makes his movements unpredictable. Had a nice shot from outside the box too.
Camo: Good early on in the game, he seemed much more lively than usual, and even chased the ball every now and then Nice assist for Trez. The only bad thing was that he still gives away possession cheaply.
Appiah: i think he did pretty well. Good defending and made some nice runs forward, with some good passes too. I remember in particular that run and cross for DV to volley. He showed that he holds the ball up well and doesn't make mistakes under pressure
Tacchinardi: pretty invisible really, I don't remember him doing anything significant apart from wearing the captain's armband. Hey, maybe i didn't notice him because he did a good job and just cleaned up the attacks. Let's hope so
Nedved: not great, but he still made important contributions, including the assists, and that freekick that DV nearly headed in was great, a defender's nightmare. Did a lot of running as usual, and gave us all a bit of a scare when he hit the deck I don't know why he lost his cool when one of our attacks broke down late in the game, probably just his enormous passion showing through
Trezeguet: looked a tad more lively than usual, in particular i remember him chasing a ball for about 20 metres to stop it going out i was surprised at that. Scored some routine goals, but hey, at least he didn't lose his cool and miss them. Had a couple of other chances too, especially from DV's cross about 5 metres out. His communication and teamwork with Di Vaio seems to be improving, i think they'll grab a lot of goals together this season.
Di Vaio: my man of the match. Not just for his 2 goals (though they were brilliant), but for his tireless running. As I've said before, he was constantly taking a midfield role and running the ball forward. Made some good chances, made a nuisance of himself with his dribbling.
His first goal was great, he held up the ball and didn't panic, waited for the right moment to shoot.
That second goal was very difficult. Generating any kind of power while moving backwards from a stationary start is hard, especially from that kind of range. I'm looking forward to seeing much more of Di Vaio this season
The substitutes didn't really impose themselves on the game, and i can't really give them a summary.

Marcello Lippi has praised his Bianconeri squad for a wonderful performance, but warns against celebrating qualification early.
“At times Juventus were unstoppable tonight. This is a team that plays a lot of first team football and cross-field passes, so that can often lead to errors, but at the same time it can make us remarkable.”
The Turin side was winning 4-0 before allowing Real Sociedad to get back into the game during the final minutes, but Lippi is not worried.
“Towards the end Sociedad got two back, including a wonderful De Pedro free kick, but we also had chances to score more. These are our characteristics, leaving room for our opponents to play so we can also move easily.”
“This is a solid team that is perhaps not as spectacular as others, but in our first ten official games this season we have done well and above all earned points.”
Juventus now lead Group D with nine points, a 100 per cent record, compared to second-placed Sociedad on six.
“One performance does not assure you of qualification,” insisted the Coach. “It can certainly bode well for the future, but that is all.”
David Trezeguet bagged a brace at the Delle Alpi and insisted the result was secondary to the performance.
“We have quality and are always trying to improve in all areas,” noted the Frenchman. “At the end of the game we became tired and Real Sociedad came out, but today we showed a lot more than in recent outings.”
Juventus have never had such a good start to the Champions’ League and boast a 100 per cent record after three games, but fans are disappointed with some of their play.
“I am still looking for my best form and am working very hard to get back to that level, but the team looked great and grabbed three crucial points.”
Despite the fact the Bianconeri were leading 4-0 at one stage, Sociedad almost fought back for a shock result.
“It wasn’t an easy game, but it was important to win and Juventus are now a step away from ensuring qualification.”
“Above all,” concluded Trezeguet, “we wanted to show our fans that Juve can play great attacking football and improve on our technique.”
Marco Di Vaio also grabbed two goals in this Champions’ League encounter and continued the fine form he has been on since the summer.
“We saw that there was room out on that flank of the Sociedad defence,” he said of his first goal, “so I moved out wide and tried to get past them with pace. Thankfully it worked.”
Even without the injured Alessandro Del Piero, Juve have ample attacking options with Fabrizio Miccoli left on the bench.
“The new face of football is all about squad rotation and as long as all of us keep scoring two per game everyone will be happy.”
The Turin side narrowly missed out on lifting this trophy in May and is making no secret of its concentration on this competition.
“It is too early to say whether this is the right season for us,” added Di Vaio, “but we are all working hard and these good results help morale.”

Pavel Nedved wants to end his career at Juventus despite reported interest from Premiership giants Chelsea.
Speculation last week suggested that the Czech international was contacted over the summer but he claims that is not the case.
"I’ve never received any offer from Mr Abramovich," insisted the midfielder who was in sparkling form against Real Sociedad last night.
"I have also never spoken to any representatives of Chelsea. But even if I had then I would have said that I wasn’t interested.
"I intend to respect the contract that I signed with Juventus and, if it is possible, I want to end my career here."
The former Lazio star, who is contracted to the Delle Alpi outfit until 2006, has become a real crowd favourite in Turin since the departure of Zinedine Zidane.
A leading contender for the 2003 Golden Ball, it is believed that Chelsea are interested in making a bid for him at the end of the season.
However, sources in Turin claim that the Bianconeri are thinking about offering the midfielder a contract extension until 2008.
"I don’t think I’ll extend my deal because I intend to quit in 2006," added Nedved. "However, there won’t be a problem because Juventus will win without me anyway."
