Juventus have approach Inter Milan about attacking midfielder Alvaro Recoba.

The Uruguay international is ready to leave Inter in January and has already been the subject of enquiries from Lazio.

Juve GM Luciano Moggi is said to have held talks with Inter president Massimo Moratti about a loan deal from January for the Recoba.

Moratti and Recoba are both open to the offer, but the final word will be left to new Inter coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

MATCH DAY THREE FIRST XI

GOALKEEPER

Djordje Pantic:Real Madrid vs PARTIZAN BELGRADE

Pantic may have finished on the losing side, but his brilliance between the Partizan sticks prevented the predicted deluge of goals. After denying Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo in the first half, the Yugoslav got even better after the break. David Beckham and Luis Figo both brought outstanding reflex stops from the Serb, who single-handedly kept his side in the game.

DEFENCE

Andrei Nesmachny: DYNAMO KIEV vs Arsenal

The 24-year old pulled out the game of his life to put the shackles on Arsenal's flying forward Thierry Henry. Nesmachny and the Kiev back line dealt intelligently with the Frenchman's pace, never allowing him to break through the offside trap, while also denying him space. The Ukraine international was equal to everything Arsenal threw at him, halting Henry with a succession of blocks, headers and interceptions. Could do nothing about the Arsenal goal.

Timmy Simons:Milan vs CLUB BRUGGE

It is difficult to pick an outstanding performer from Bruges' brilliant back-line, but Simons' sweeping job at the heart of defence was the key element in the Belgian rearguard. A midfielder by trade, Simons displayed the touch and vision of a playmaker while getting stuck into the thick of the action when called upon. Also abandoned his deep-lying post to catch Inzaghi offside on several occasions.

Bulent Kormaz: GALATASARAYvs Olympiakos

A masterclass of pragmatism from the Turkish veteran. Bulent was his usual dominant self in the air, repelling wave after wave of Olympiakos attacks. While not the fleetest of foot, he made up for his lack of pace with exceptional ultra-tight marking on Geovanni and Castillo. When either forward managed to escape his vice-like grip, Bulent almost always found a way to put his man off balance with a surreptitious tug or shove. Classic old school defending.

Andreas Hinkel: VFB STUTTGARTvs Panathinaikos

Stuttgart's young wing back showed he is capable of big things with an eye-catching performance on Wednesday. A tremendous athlete, the 21-year old constantly gave his side options with his adventurous overlapping runs. When he got hold of the ball, Hinkel's direct, speedy running caused palpitations in the Panathinaikos defence. Had the stamina to keep going for ninety minutes, and was always in position when called upon to perform defensive duties.

MIDFIELD

Deco:Olympique Marseille vs PORTO

The Brazilian-turned-Portuguese magician provided one of those beguiling shows that so captivated football fans during Porto's victorious UEFA Cup campaign last season. The little number ten combined short and long passing to great effect, knowing exactly when to run and when to give the ball. Deco's marvellous decision-making meant that he never over-complicated matters, and he got his reward when Alenichev turned in his intelligent pull-back for Porto's third goal.

David Beckham: REAL MADRIDvs Partizan Belgrade

Beckham as midfield enforcer? It's so crazy it just might work. The England captain showed off his tremendous work-rate and appetite for the game with a commanding, box-to-box performance, and supplied the corner that led to Madrid's goal. He covered every blade of grass, and thrived defensively after the break when he no longer had the rock-solid Helguera for company in midfield. His evening was encapsulated in one second-half minute, when he laid on a great chance for Figo before haring back ninety metres to make a goal-saving block. Colossal.

Dmitri Loskov: LOKOMOTIV MOSCOWvs Inter

A fantastic victory for the Russians, led by skipper Dmitri Loskov. Was on hand to open the scoring in the second minute with the sort of 'easy' finish that is often missed. Elsewhere, Loskov was inspirational, at the hub of the Russians' flowing moves, utterly outplaying Inter. He provided the cross for Khokhlov to head Loko's third and round off an outstanding all-round performance, giving the Russians more than a fighting chance of making the last sixteen.

Frank Lampard: CHELSEAvs Lazio

Storming stuff from the England man, cementing his tag as one of Europe's in-form midfielders. After the Blues fell behind to Simone Inzaghi's sucker punch, Lampard took the game by the scruff of the neck, and was instrumental in the Chelsea revival. The left-footed tracer-bullet that rattled Lazio's bar from 25m demonstrated his new-found confidence. He drove Chelsea's midfield, and found the net - again from outside the box - to put his side on level terms.

ATTACK

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: AJAXvs Celta Vigo

Zlatan's incredible Champions League form continues. The big Swede demonstrated exceptional touch and skill, often fighting a lone battle against the Celta back line as Sonck dropped back. His goal was pure genius, beating three men and slotting home left-footed. He even had time to pull out a classic playground trick, knocking the ball past Velasco and running round the other way to shoot past Pinto.

Marco Di Vaio: JUVENTUSvs Real Sociedad

Often used to playing third fiddle to Trezeguet and Del Piero, Marco Di Vaio really hit his stride against the dangerous Basques with a brace of first half goals. Di Vaio enjoyed his relatively rare opportunity to display his striker's instinct, firing home Pavel Nedved's through ball and netting an injury time header with a minimum of fuss. He played the assassin to perfection, and had the match sewn up by half time.

SUBSTITUTES

Tim Howard:Rangers vs MANCHESTER UNITED

United's new keeper seems to enjoy the big occasions, and he was right at home in the Ibrox cauldron of noise on Wednesday. In his first Champions League campaign, the young American's composure and assurance have belied his lack of experience. Shots from Arteta and Lovenkrands (twice) failed to trouble him, while his superb communication showed what United were missing when Fabien Barthez was between the sticks.

Roberto Carlos: REAL MADRIDvs Partizan Belgrade

Football's equivalent of the Duracell bunny. Roberto Carlos simply never runs out of energy, even when things are not going all his way. On Wednesday the pocket dynamo went close to netting with a couple of rocket-powered shots and gave Partizan's right wing back Ognjanovic a roasting, but his final ball was often just wayward. Even so, he showed just how comprehensively he has redefined the full back's job description.

Karel Poborsky: SPARTA PRAGUEvs Besiktas

The 31-year old winger is in the form of his life, so it was fitting that he should score the late goal that gave Sparta their first Champions League win of the season. As always, the Czech international was at the heart of everything the hosts created, and almost broke the deadlock with a long-range free kick that Oscar Corboda did well to tip over. Poborsky got his reward six minutes from time as he turned home Sparta's winner.

Diego Tristan: DEPORTIVO LA CORUÑAvs Monaco

Diego Tristan has endured a miserable twelve months. After being pushed to the sidelines by Roy Makaay, he has now seen Walter Pandiani and Albero Luque take the limelight as Depor's frontmen. The latter has even replaced him in the Spanish national squad. However, Tuesday brought out the Tristan of old; a potent mix of skills, inventiveness and a nose for goal that saw him net Depor's late winner.

Andres Mendoza:Milan vs CLUB BRUGGE

The man who conquered the European champions. In truth, Mendoza's overall performance was not the sort to write home about, except for one moment of absolute quality. The Peruvian got free of Cafu to collect Gvozdenovic's through ball, and netted with an audacious effort with the outside of his left foot. The goal alone merits a place on the First XI's sub bench.

Juventus striker happy with rotation system
by Espen Andre Skjerve

Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio has no problem with coach Marcello Lippi's squad rotation system.

Lippi has changed his starting line-up in every game this season and the results have been outstanding.

The former Parma ace said: "It’s easy to sit on the bench at Juventus right now.

"Lippi has no favourites and everyone has been left out at one stage.

"The good thing right now is that if you don’t play in one game then you’re likely to start the next."

Di Vaio scored two goals in Juventus 4-2 win against Real Sociedad in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio has praised boss Marcello Lippi for the way he uses the rotation system.

The tactician has continually chopped and changed his starting line-up so far this term but results haven’t suffered.

"It’s easy to sit on the bench at Juventus right now," stated the striker. "Lippi has no favourites and everyone has been left out at one stage.

"The good thing right now is that if you don’t play in one game then you’re likely to start the next."

Lippi is putting the system to good use in attack where Trezeguet, Miccoli and Di Vaio are all getting a chance to find the target with Alex Del Piero still injured.

And Di Vaio continued his fine start to the season on Tuesday when he netted twice in the 4-2 win over Real Sociedad.

"I’ve got the new campaign off on the right foot," said the former Parma striker. "I want to demonstrate to people that I deserve to be at this club. I’m ready to end my career here."

Del Piero eyes Milan return

Alessandro Del Piero is recovering faster than expected and could take on Milan next week.

“I have been in full training with the squad for the last three days,” revealed the Juventus captain, “complete with exercises and games between ranks, but without pushing myself too hard.”

The Italian international has been out of action for over a month, since tearing his left calf muscle during the 2-2 draw with Roma.

“Taking part in the kickabouts with my teammates really boosts my confidence,” he continued.

“But even though I am recovering well there is still strengthening work and pool exercise to be done in order to get the calf muscle back to full fitness.”

Club doctors performed tests recently and predicted Del Piero’s comeback for the November 9 encounter with Udinese.

However, it is reported that the clash with joint Serie A leaders Milan a week early is within his sights.

“In any case,” concluded Alex, “getting back to full training is an important step and that means my comeback is on the horizon.”

Juventus have registered their interest for Brescia defender Dario Dainelli.

Tuttosport says Juve GM Luciano Moggi has settled on Dainelli and Bayer Leverkusen's Lucio as his two top defensive targets for January.

Dainelli has been one of the most consistent performers in Serie A in recent seasons and his progress has also attracted interest from England.

Week 7: Juventus - Brescia

Serie A Week 7 - 26/10/03 (15.00)
Juventus - Brescia

Stadio Delle Alpi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Baggio scored against his former club Inter last week and hopes to repeat the trick as he returns to Turin.

The Divine Ponytail was once a hero at the Delle Alpi and lifted the World Player of the Year Award in front of the Juventus fans. It would not be the first time that he has troubled the Bianconeri and his Brescia side is buoyed by the 2-2 draw with Inter.

Andrea Caracciolo is the other danger man with a remarkable five goals under his belt. However, the memory of losing a two-goal lead in that game will force them to rethink their defensive strategy.

Juventus also got something of a shock last Saturday, almost losing a 3-0 lead at sorry Ancona. The fightback was a little too late to take full advantage of the situation and the match ended 3-2, but not before questions were asked of the Juve team¡¦s commitment.

Marcello Lippi continues to rotate the squad and should give Fabrizio Miccoli the support role to David Trezeguet following his two goals at the weekend. Igor Tudor and Nicola Legrottaglie return from fitness worries, while Lilian Thuram and Alessio Tacchinardi are likely to be rested.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Birindelli, Legrottaglie, Iuliano, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tudor, Davids, Nedved; Miccoli, Trezeguet

Brescia (probable): Saja; Petruzzi, Mareco, Dainelli, Martinez; Filippini, Di Biagio, Matuzalem, Bachini; Baggio, Caracciolo

Serie A Preview: Juventus v Brescia

BACKGROUND:

21st encounter between Juventus and Brescia at the Delle Alpi of Turin on Sunday afternoon, which saw Juventus triumph for 15 times and the match ending in a draw 5 times.

Brescia have never won a league match in Turin, but did succeed in raiding the Delle Alpi once, during a Coppa Italia match in the 2000/01 season when a Dario Hubner brace gave the 'rondinelle' a precious 2-1 victory.

The last bianconeri victory came last season when Alessandro Del Piero netted twice to lead Juventus to a 2-1 win which paved the way for their 27th Scudetto.

Ironically, the last draw between these two teams resulted in the 2000/01 season, when on 1st April Roberto Baggio made an April Fool to his old team by scoring in the dying minutes to end the match 1-1; a result which proved costly when at the end of the season Roma won by just one point over Juve.

Baggio will be available for the weekend's match, ready to haunt his former team once again, however this time he will be playing alongside Caracciolo upfront, a young tall player who has impressed thanks to his 5 goals scored this season.

Juventus are currently on fire, having won 9 out of their last 10 encounters in Serie A and Champions League. Their form is great but their goalscoring record is even more impressive having nearly an average of 3 goals per match with all their strikers proving to be able to net the ball whenever it is needed. This will be a major worry for Brescia, whose defence has already let in 15 goals in the first 6 matches.

Marcello Lippi will most probably keep on rotating the squad, a factor which has proved to be very important in involving all of his players, making them feel equally important, and having all of his main men always fresh and ready for each encounter.

Unlike Lippi, De Biasi does not have as much depth, so Brescia should play with more or less the same squad that last weekend drew 2-2 against Inter and virtually sacked Hector Cuper.

TEAM NEWS:

Juventus: Full squad bar Del Piero for Lippi, so his only problem will be who to field and who to rest ahead of next Sunday's Milan-Juventus.

Brescia: Jadid, Dainello and Colucci are the injured players for De Biasi, however the coach will be comforted by his team's good performance last weekend against Inter and hoping they can repeat it.

PROBABLE FORMATIONS:

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Birindelli, Legrottaglie, Ferrara, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Maresca, Davids; Nedved; Miccoli, Trezeguet

Brescia (4-4-2): Saja; Petruzzi, Mareco, Stankevicius, Martinez; Filippini, Di Biagio, Matuzalem, Bachini; Baggio Caracciolo

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Miccoli (Juventus): Did not play during the week against Real Sociedad, so he will be ready to show what he's worth against Brescia so to win a place for next Sunday's showdown against Milan.

Caracciolo (Brescia): Has been scoring goals in Serie A with ease. Scoring away to Juventus would consecrate him among the best of Serie A.

Serie A Prediction: Juventus v Brescia

With Juventus' current average of nearly 3 goals per match and with Brescia's average of more than 2 goals conceded per match, this game can easily finish 3-0 for the bianconeri.

Our former Juve star being invited..

Former Inter hero Ivan Zamorano has invited Roberto Baggio, Ronaldo and David Beckham to his testimonial game.

The 36-year-old Chilean international has decided to hang up his boots with a star-studded game at the National de Santiago Stadium on December 22.

Among his colleagues at the send-off will be the Divine Ponytail (pictured), former Inter teammates Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Javier Zanetti.

Other names mentioned include Raul of Real Madrid, Chelsea duo Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernan Crespo.

"I would also like Diego Armando Maradona to come along," revealed Zamorano, "even if only as a spectator."

The striker, nicknamed Bam Bam for his childhood habit of head butting household objects, was a fan favourite at the San Siro during the late 1990’s.

A former Real Madrid forward, he joined Inter in 1996 and entertained the crowds for five seasons before returning to his native South America.

Fabrizio Miccoli has pledged to walk from Turin to his hometown Lecce if Juventus lift the Champions’ League trophy.

“I hope to deserve a place in the Italy squad,” admitted the new starlet, “but first I would like to win something big with Juve.”

“I swear that if we win the European trophy this season I will walk all the way home to my parents’ house. But of course the Scudetto is hardly something to sniff at either.”

Marcello Lippi's men are the only side in the competition, along with Real Madrid, who maintain a 100 per cent record so far this season.

The Bianconeri last ruled the Continent in 1996, but have since lost three Finals, the most recent against Milan at Old Trafford.

Miccoli was making his mark at Perugia during that period and is now being compared to the likes of Romario and Toto Schillaci.

“These are improbable comparisons,” insisted the pint-sized forward. “Those are eternal legends of the game. I am happy just to be called Fabrizio Miccoli.”

There are idols closer to home for the former Ternana man who first came to Juve’s attention in Serie B.

“Alessandro Del Piero is simply the best in my opinion, but the Golden Ball should go to Pavel Nedved this year.”

The newcomer did not have a particularly fortunate start to his Turin career, as within hours of his Serie A debut he was rushed to hospital to have his appendix removed.

“It is true that it wasn’t always easy,” he concedes, “but now things are going great for me. I scored a brace against Ancona and am really settling into this new role as a Trequartista.”

Miccoli is moved around the field as a replacement for the injured Del Piero and is taking on a variety of tactical positions.

“I played as a support striker at Perugia, but the important thing is to be ready for change and able to help out the Coach. I had never played out on the right, but now I’m there it is very enjoyable.”

Miccoli will start this Sunday against Brescia and aims to use his blistering pace to beat opponents.

“After all,” he smiled, “if you take away the ability to run quickly from a tiny fellow like myself, there isn’t a lot left.”

Marcello Lippi believes the Bianconeri should constantly battle to better themselves rather than look to be ahead of their opponents.

“The real gamble now is to try and win all of our games this season,” said the Coach. “I know that this is impossible, but we must at least try to achieve that week after week.”

Juventus have won the last two Italian titles and are the only team in Europe, along with Real Madrid, to hold a 100 per cent record in the Champions’ League so far.

“I want this team to lose only if our opponents did better than us on the day,” he continued, “not because we didn’t give 100 per cent.”

There were worrying signs over the last week, as Juve were leading both Ancona and Real Sociedad before conceding two late goals in each game.

Brescia will now come to visit the Stadio Delle Alpi and Juve will rotate the squad on Sunday afternoon.

In Serie A the Bianconeri have already conceded seven goals, over twice as many as Milan and Roma.

“I saw Brescia’s game against Inter and they have a very strong midfield with Gigi Di Biagio, Jonathan Bachini and Francelino Matuzalem. Plus of course they have Roberto Baggio as a focal point.”

Baggio famously bitterly criticised Lippi in his autobiography and the two clashed both at Inter and Juventus.

“After this week,” insisted Lippi, “in which pundits have called us the best team in Europe, we must continue along this path and not slow down now.”

Tudor on for Camo

So Tudor and David in the midfield i think..

Argh! Great cross in from Nedved....Ferrara gets to it and misses a "ought to be a goal" shot from like 4 yards..

Serie A Week 7 - 26/10/03 (15.00)

Juventus 2 - 0 Brescia
Nedved 6 (J), Trezeguet 45 (J)
Stadio Delle Alpi

Juventus continue their remarkable form with a stunning Pavel Nedved goal, but Brescia will look back and rue missing a penalty.

The midweek 4-2 drubbing of Real Sociedad boosted morale and the Bianconeri seem unbeatable so far this season. The squad was rotated once again with Fabrizio Miccoli given the key role upfront.

Juve poured forward from the start in their new 'Cave Purple' third strip and Miccoli's chip was well saved within the opening sixty seconds.

However, it was Brescia who were given the opportunity to open the scoring when Andrea Caracciolo fell under pressure from Ciro Ferrara. Former Juve legend Roberto Baggio strepped up and saw his penalty saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

It was a very weak and central effort, the second spot-kick that Baggio has missed so far this season, but the contact from Ferrara seemed minimal at best.

This was a particularly curious decision, as referee Gianluca Paparesta was bitterly criticised a fortnight ago for awarding a dubious penalty to Juventus in the final minutes of their 2-1 win over Bologna.

Mere moments later Juventus took the lead with a simply magnificent strike from Pavel Nedved. David Trezeguet held up Gianluca Zambrotta's cross for a stunning acrobatic volley from the Czech international.

It remained a relatively even game with chances for both sides and Stephan Appiah's piledriver shook the side-netting while a Baggio free kick curled inches wide of the woodwork.

There was controversy before the break when Juventus saw a Trezeguet goal disallowed for Miccoli's offside position, but he most likely was not interfering with play as he was on the other side of the box.

The Frenchman got his goal eventually when nodding in after some excellent build-up play from Mauro German Camoranesi.

The Argentine-born Italian international was replaced at half-time by the more defensive-minded Igor Tudor.

There was bad news for Brescia when Antonio Filippini fell awkwardly on his shoulder. The midfielder was stretchered off and replaced by ex-Juve man Matteo Brighi.

Goalkeeper Sebastian Saja rushed off his line to block a Miccoli run with his feet.

Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Montero, Ferrara, Zambrotta; Appiah, Camoranesi (Tudor 46), Davids (Birindelli 72), Nedved (Maresca 82); Miccoli, Trezeguet

Brescia: Saja; Petruzzi, Stankevicius, Mareco (Stankevicius 77), Martinez; Filippini (Brighi 52), Matuzalem, Di Biagio, Bachini (Maniero 82); Baggio; Caracciolo

Ref: Paparesta

Missed penalty: Baggio 4 (B)

Juventus and Real Madrid are just two of a number of clubs interested in Ternana star Luis Garce Jimenez.

The 19-year-old midfielder has had an extraordinary start to the Serie B campaign which has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Reports suggest that Juventus and Real scouts were present at the Stadio Liberati on Saturday to watch the youngster.

He certainly didn’t let them down as Jimenez netted twice against Zdenek Zeman’s struggling Avellino.

The South American has also been linked with moves to Manchester United, Chelsea and Lazio.

Ternana have openly admitted that they believe the player is worth at least £4.5m.

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon was key in the 2-0 win over Brescia according to Pavel Nedved.

The Italian No 1 saved a Roberto Baggio penalty after just three minutes, before the Czech ace gave his side the lead soon after with a superb volley.

"Gigi’s save was decisive for us," said the international star. "If we’d have gone a goal down then things would have been very difficult for us."

Nedved was again in great form but he was quick to pay tribute to his teammates in the comfortable victory.

"We played relatively well and even had a good goal, scored by David Trezeguet, wrongly ruled out for offside," he added.

"I must compliment my side because we didn’t lose our focus and we again demonstrated that we have a will to win."

Although Juventus were not sensational, Nedved was impressed with their display after their 4-2 win over Real Sociedad last Tuesday.

"It’s tough after European games," he added. "You leave a lot of energy behind when you play in the Champions’ League. We deserved our win against Brescia."

The Bianconeri’s second goal at the Delle Alpi was scored by Trezeguet who glanced in a Mauro Camoranesi cross.

Here are my comments on the Juve players:

Buffon Best match of the season? Gigi returned to his old self and saved a penalty from Baggio and kept his net clear of any goals .. He also improved in crosses and looked much more confident

Thuram Slowing improving but still nowhere near the Thuram of the past seasons. I wonder what happened to Lilian during the summer ?!

Ferrara I expected him to be rusty in this match but I'm glad he proved me wrong. The penalty awarded agaisnt him was pretty harsh to say the least as the contact appeared to be minimal during replays.

Montero His partnership with Ferrara reminded us of last season and produced a clean sheet. Food for thought !!

Zambrotta A manly and professioal performance but no dive from Zambro this time :D Anyway, his no nonsense approach in the back have made him a better defender ..

Camoranesi I hope he doesn't get alot of critisicm because he infact lost alot of balls in midfield, but lets not forget that he also crossed the ball for Treze for the second goal

Appiah Continued with where he left off during the past matches with another impressive performance. He's proving to be Serie A's best signing for this season ..

Davids Easily fended off opponents with amazing runs but missed the final touch or pass .. without Tacchi in midfield we did look disorganized even after Tudor was introduced, who was good at recovering balls but not as good when organizing attacks from midfield ..

Nedved Even though there wasn't much space left by the Brescia defenders and midfielders, Neddy found his way through and scored a world-class goal ..

Miccoli Didn't do much unless you count scaring the life out of Brescia defenders everytime he had the ball .. Miccoli was very lively and obviously deserved to score from the numerous chances he had .. Not to forget the classy back-heel flick that would've made Maradona proud ..

Trezeguet was very clinical as he scored goals and was dangerous everytime he had the ball ..

I would just like to mention the squad's depth that was apparent through Lippis susbstitutions, check this:

With 1 substitution Lippi was able to rotate players in 3 different positions;

1) Birindelli came in for Davids. He took Zambro's position as leftback.

2) Zambro took Appiah's position on the right of midfield.

3) Appiah took Davids's position on the left of midfield.

All of this happened in one instance of the match !!

Man of the Match IMO : Lippi

His rotation system is pure CLASS! And his substitutions today were precise to the exact second..

really some strange selections from him...no Fava of Udinese?

and btw i din know there's a English man playing in Perugia. Anybody knows his background?

The best…

Jay Bothroyd (Perugia)
What a goal he scored against Udinese. If the Englishman can keep on improving as he is doing then he has the potential to become one of the most devastating strikers in Italy. We feared he would be the new Blissett when he arrived but he’s quickly dismissed that theory.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/imgs/bothroydindex.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amauri (Chievo)
He was close to making our list last week when he scored a great goal against Sampdoria. He makes it this time thanks to his strike at Empoli. This forward has got some great touches and is high on confidence. He is set to be the latest success story at little Chievo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matias Almeyda (Inter)
The Argentine was Inter’s best player under the guidance of new boss Alberto Zaccheroni. His first couple of games this season didn’t go too well but we saw the old Almeyda against Roma. The player who became a fan favourite during his time at Lazio. He could become a key figure under Zac, just like Giuliano Giannichedda was at Udinese.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest…

Roberto Baggio (Brescia)
Who would have thought the great Roby would ever be on this side of the list? He had to be included for his penalty miss against Juventus. We’ve not seen one so poor for some time. Obviously anyone can miss from the spot but Brescia’s survival hopes are linked with Baggio’s displays.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/imgs/baggioindex01.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adriano (Parma)
His lack of enthusiasm at giving Parma a 2-0 lead against Modena was hard to believe. This is a youngster that gets excited in practice games. Maybe scoring goals isn’t the most important thing for him anymore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Olivier Dacourt (Roma)
Why he is rated as a great midfielder is mystifying. He’s just a basic player, he lacks ideas and often fouls. He’s not a player of Roma’s standards

Juventus have resigned themselves to losing Edgar Davids on a free transfer at the end of this season.

The Dutchman has less than a year left on his Delle Alpi contract and the club believe his time in Turin is drawing to a conclusion.

"At the end of this season he will be free from any contractual obligations," director general Luciano Moggi stated.

"Therefore he will be able to choose his next destination. Will we try to keep him? I don’t think so."

The former Ajax man was expected to leave the Italian champions for Roma but that now looks unlikely.

Although the Giallorossi are interested, their financial problems seem to have ended any hope of signing the international.

That now makes Inter the more likely destination with speculation suggesting that Davids has already bought a house in the city.

Meanwhile, the Bianconeri are being heavily linked with two rising stars of the Italian game.

Moggi is understood to have contacted Atalanta over the availability of 19-year-old attacking midfielder Giampaolo Pazzini.

Juve will reportedly make a bid for the youngster in January but allow him to stay in Bergamo until 2005.

Fellow midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, just 18, is also being associated with the Italian champions.

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi is confident that Alex Del Piero will return to action in the Week 9 clash against Udinese.

The Italian ace has been sidelined for over a month with a calf problem but he will be available for the November 9 clash at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

"Although results have been good we have been missing Del Piero," Lippi told ‘Radio Anch`io Sport’ on Monday.

"He is right on track with his rehabilitation programme, therefore we should see him again against Udinese."

The absence of Del Piero hasn’t affected the team’s results as they’ve won every game since he was ruled out.

One of the main architects behind the Bianconeri’s amazing run of form is Pavel Nedved.

The Czech ace is a leading contender to win the 2003 Golden Ball and his display against Brescia yesterday illustrated why.

"He deserves that award," added Lippi. "This year he’s won the Scudetto, helped the team reach the Champions’ League Final and qualified for Euro 2004 with his country.

"There are a number of other contenders but Nedved has to be one of the front runners."

Lippi also commented on next week’s big Serie A showdown when Juve travel to joint leaders Milan.

"We know each other very well after meeting so many times in recent months," continued the Coach.

"It won’t be a decisive game for the title though seeing as we lost at the San Siro last year but still won the League.

"It should be a great game because we are two great sides."

David Trezeguet has revealed that he has yet to start talks with Juventus over a contract extension.

Reports recently had suggested that the Frenchman was set to sign a new three-year deal but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

"Negotiations have yet to begin," the striker told the French newspaper L'Equipe. "Right now I don’t want to talk about it. All I know is that Juve want me to stay and that is vital."

The former Monaco man only has 18 months left to run on his deal and is keen to continue playing his club football in Turin.

Trezeguet has been after a new salary improved deal for some time but Juventus have made him wait.

It is believed that they are ready to satisfy his requests so long as his wage demands are not deemed too excessive.

If talks break down then a move to the Premiership would be likely after numerous clubs have been linked with his services.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a massive fan of the player, while Trezeguet was recently associated with a move to Man Utd.

Stories suggested that Juventus would offer cash and the player to the Old Trafford outfit in exchange for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Juventus GM Luciano Moggi has approached Atalanta to open talks about a January deal for Giampaolo Pazzini.
The 19 year-old is rated by some as the 'new Alessandro del Piero' and Juve want to sign the attacking midfielder in January to a pre-contract.

Juve are willing to offer £6 million for Pazzini, who would be allowed to finish the season at Atalanta before moving to Turin.

Along with Pazzini, Juve are also chasing his 18 year-old teammate Riccardo Montolivo.

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi won’t risk Alessandro Del Piero in Saturday’s Scudetto showdown at Milan.

The Italian ace is recovering well from a calf strain but the tactician has dismissed whispers that he could return at the San Siro.

"He won’t be part of the squad for the Milan game," Lippi confirmed on Tuesday. "He’s working well and is close to the level of fitness of his teammates.

"However, I don’t want to take the risk of playing him against Milan. It’s better to have him at his best for the game against Udinese a week later."

The No 10 has been absent since the Week 3 draw with Roma but Juventus have won every game since thanks to Lippi’s rotation system.

"We’ve got three very tough matches coming up (Milan, Real Sociedad, Udinese) and I will keep changing the side so that I keep my squad as motivated as possible," he added.

Juventus and Milan have faced each other on numerous occasions in recent months after their clashes in the Champions’ League and the Italian Super Cup.

"Am I sick of playing them? I never tire from watching such two great teams facing each other," Lippi continued. "I’m expecting a great game.

"But Juve and Milan are not running away with the Scudetto chase. Roma, Inter and Lazio are still in the race."

Lippi was again questioned about the contenders for the European Player of the Year award.

"Pavel Nedved is not the only person that deserves the Golden Ball," he added. "Shevchenko, Maldini and Buffon also deserve praise. Even if obviously I hope one of my players win it."

Meanwhile, Juventus director Antonio Giraudo has confirmed that the redevelopment of the Stadio Delle Alpi will see its 71,000 capacity cut.

"It will be a 40,000 seater arena," he revealed. "41,000 at the most."

Here's the reasons why Milan won't beat us IMO:

1) We are basically tough in our CL-group, Milan most defenitely are not doing as well after their defeat recently. Milan might have their CL-match in mind, Juve on the other hand can concentrate on the Milan match.

2)If Thuram plays at his normal capacaty, we have the best wingbacks in the world, we didn't have that last time we played Milan. Zambrotta wasn't the great Defender he is today. If Both of them play their best, they can shut down Milan's attacks and rapidly start counter-attacks. Many of u may have in mind Thuram's great goal at the Della Alpi, which was created in a counter that he himself started.

3)I think Nedved wan't to show Milan and Juve that the best team didn't win the CL-final, it was the team with the most important player absence, that lost. He will feel that he has some revenge.

4) 3 of our forwards + Neddy is in great form, and I can almost certenly say that they will atleast score one goal, and if the defence does it's job, we maby even walk out of the San Siro as winners.

:D

Hopefully Legrottaglie will be back for this clash but more interestingly I hope that Del Piero can at least make it to the bench. Trezeguet and Di Vaio will probably make up the strike force, while the defence is quite easy to decifer, but what is anyone's guess is how the midfield will line up. Lippi has a luxury of choices at his disposal and can choose from Camoranesi and Appiah for the right side of midfield, Appiah, Tacchinardi, Maresca and Davids for the anchor role and Davids and Maresca for the left side of midfield. This would be my choice:

Buffon
Thuram Montero Legrottaglie Zambrotta
Camoranesi Appiah Davids
Nedved
Trezeguet Di Vaio

Del Piero back in action Wednesday 29 October, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Del Piero took part in a friendly game today, boosting rumours he is to feature against Milan on Saturday.

The Juventus captain has been sidelined since tearing a calf muscle during the 2-2 draw with Roma on September 20.

This afternoon he played all 90 minutes of a friendly match with amateur side Cossatese and seemed to be nearing full fitness, although he also missed a penalty during that encounter.

The Bianconeri emerged 4-1 winners thanks to an Enzo Maresca brace and goals for Marcelo Zalayeta and Salvatore Fresi.

Coach Marcello Lippi had insisted in a press conference that he would not be risking Del Piero for this weekend’s top of the table clash with Milan.

However, the reports continue to suggest that he will at least be able to sit on the bench and almost certainly feature against Real Sociedad next week.

Even if the original schedule is adhered to, the Juventus star will celebrate his birthday with a comeback against Udinese on November 9.

The other question mark for the Milan match hangs over Nicola Legrottaglie. The ex-Chievo defender played 45 minutes of today’s test but is still struggling with a groin problem

this guy is brillant...hope we can get him if Trez decide not to sign contract extension...

October 30, 2003

Juventus are stepping up their bid to sign Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede's agent has reportedly held preliminary talks with Juve chief Luciano Moggi, who is said to have been encouraged by what Mino Raiola had to say.

Moggi is still concerned with how negotiations over a new deal for David Trezeguet are going, with the Frenchman's current contract expiring in 2005.

Meanwhile, Juve have agreed a contract extension with Alessandro Birindelli on reduced terms.

The versatile midfielder will stay with the Turin giants until 2007.

Juventus will take on Enrico Chiesa’s Siena in the Third Round as the top flight sides qualify comfortably.

There were fears that Empoli’s shock exit at the hands of Serie B outfit Venezia would be repeated in this evening’s games, but overall the big clubs learned their lesson.

Siena set up perhaps the most intriguing Third Round tie when disposing of Serie C side Teramo with a 3-0 scoreline.

There was a South American feel to their win with Brazilian Fernando Menegazzo, Uruguayan Gianni Guigou and Italian Raffaele Rubino on the scoresheet. Teramo wasted the chance to get a consolation goal when Biso missed a penalty.

Franco Colomba’s Reggina will go on to face Inter in the next stage of the competition, having demolished Salernitana 3-0 with a Julio Cesar Leon brace around Davide Di Michele’s strike.

Bologna’s poor Serie A form was not reflected in their victory over Brindisi, a result that was needed to overturn their shock 3-2 first leg defeat to the third division side.

Claudio Bellucci, Fausto Rossini and Ighli Tare scored to set up an encounter with Udinese.

Modena saw off Serie C side Sambenedettese 2-0 thanks to Fabio Vignaroli and Nicola Campedelli, but Vignaroli failed to convert a late penalty that would have given him a brace.

Their qualification was in doubt following a surprise 2-1 defeat in the first leg, but the Canarini will meet with Lazio in the next round.

Trophy holders Milan will take on Sampdoria following a confident 3-0 drubbing of Pro Patria.

Massimo Marazzina, Cristiano Doni and Cristian Zenoni were on target, but Samp will need a better performance than the one that saw Milan crush them 3-0 in the League last week.

There is one game left to be played in this Second Round of the Coppa Italia, as Brescia and Palermo drew 1-1 in Sicily during the first leg. The decisive encounter will be played at the Stadio Rigamonti on Thursday.

Reggina 3-0 Salernitana

Scorers: Leon 50, 70, Di Michele 52

Reggina qualify 5-0 on aggregate and will face Inter

Bologna 3-0 Brindisi

Scorers: Bellucci 36, Rossini 43, Tare 89

Bologna qualify 6-2 on aggregate and will face Udinese

Modena 2-0 Sambenedettese

Scorers: Vignaroli 36, Campedelli 84

Missed pen: Vignaroli 92 (M)

Modena qualify 3-2 on aggregate and will face Lazio

Sampdoria 3-0 Pro Patria

Scorers: Marazzina 6, Doni 10, Zenoni 77

Sampdoria qualify 4-0 on aggregate and will face Milan

Siena 3-0 Teramo

Scorers: Menegazzo 6, Guigou 15, Rubino 42

Sent off: Foglio 60 (S)

Missed pen: Biso 60 (T)

Siena qualify 4-0 on aggregate and will face Juventus

Brescia-Palermo

To be played on Thursday, first leg score 1-1

Alessandro Del Piero is confident that his Juventus side can win at the San Siro against Milan this weekend.

"I’m very hopeful that we can get the three points," the Bianconeri captain said on Thursday afternoon.

Del Piero is set to miss the game because of injury but he did take part in an alternative clash earlier today.

He faced Milan as Juventus at the official launch party of a new video game in Italy. It ended 0-0 but the Italian is confident that scoreline won’t be repeated on Saturday.

"It will be a very open game where both sides will look to implement their very own brand of football," he added.

"History tells us that Juve and Milan will look for the win. They are two great clubs in every single department."

Alex has been sidelined with injury since the Week 3 draw with Roma but he’s confident he will return soon.

"I’m recovering well," he maintained. "I think I will be back in action for my birthday on November 9 against Udinese."

The No 10 was also asked for his opinion on what Inter could achieve this season after the appointment of Alberto Zaccheroni.

"They have time on their side to get back into Scudetto contention," he maintained. "They can do well."

Serie A Week 8 - 1/11/03 (20.30)
Milan-Juventus
Live on British Eurosport (7.00pm UK time)
Stadio San Siro

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two most successful teams in Serie A history have faced off several times over the last few months, but now they engage in a duel for the top of the table.

Last week Milan’s crushing 3-0 win at Sampdoria placed them in pole position on goal difference after sharing the leadership with Juventus for much of the campaign. Both sides are unbeaten and between them so far have netted 33 goals.

Over the last year the two teams have clashed for the Champions’ League, Italian Supercup and Serie A, but the games have always been very closely matched and it would take a brave man to place a bet on this result.

Juve’s usually rock-solid defence has been leaking goals, keeping just two clean sheets in all competitions this season, while former Bianconeri hero Pippo Inzaghi returns from a thigh injury to partner current Serie A top scorer Andriy Shevchenko. The Ukrainian has a habit of netting against the Turin giants and once scored the goal of the season against Gianluigi Buffon in this fixture.

The Rossoneri are constantly adapting their squad from week to week, able to use Manuel Rui Costa and Kaka’ in the same line-up or letting them battle it out for a single supporting role. Explosive winger Serginho is currently being used as a left-back to balance out Marcos Cafu on the right, so with the Juve defence lacking something in pace and Gianluca Zambrotta playing a similar role this could be a useful tactic on Saturday night.

Juventus have won the last two Italian titles and have never started so strongly with six wins and a hard-fought draw against Roma. Alessandro Del Piero has an outside chance of featuring after a lightning recovery from a torn calf muscle, but is more likely to be left out in favour of Marco Di Vaio and David Trezeguet.

Edgar Davids or Stephan Appiah can be chosen for a fierce midfield duel with Gennaro Gattuso, but one man particularly eager to make his mark is Pavel Nedved. The Czech international is a firm favourite to lift the Balon d’Or and was devastated when forced to miss the Champions’ League Final due to a one-match ban. He will get his chance to face Milan now and hopes to replicate the stunning goal he netted against Brescia last week.

MILAN - JUVENTUS

http://images.soccerage.com/60295.gif http://images.soccerage.com/60293.gif

San Siro Stadium. Saturday November 01, 2003. 20.30 CET

Even though the 'Derby D'Italia' refers to the match contested between Juve and Inter, Milan-Juve is really the current biggest match in the Italian Serie A calender no matter how much players or managers try to play down the importance of this particular match. Afterall, the match is between the two teams who played the Champions League final last season. Also, the same two teams are yet to be beaten in Italy this season. And since both teams are tied in first place, the winner of this encounter will posses the sole leadership after weeks of sharing that top spot.

The teams are in fact so close to each other that they have collected the same number of points up to this round of the Serie A season (19 points) and are only seperated thanks to a superior goal difference to the advantage of Milan (+1 goal). The two teams also needed penalty kicks to seperate between them in the last 2 encounters (Champions League final and the Italian SuperCup) after both matches ended in draws even with extended play. So the stakes are high and the pressure is on.

Let's have a look at the individual 'battles' between the players:

Buffon vs. Dida

Two of the best GKs come face to face in this hotly anticipated encounter. Both GKs were able to keep a clean sheet in the Manchester final with over 120 minutes of open play. Buffon was chosen UEFA Champions League Best GK as well as Best Overall Player for the 2002-2003 season. He comes to this match full of confidence after saving a penalty from none other than the 'Divine Ponytail' last weekend and would be looking forward to keep another clean sheet in this match. In fact, the Azzurri Numero Uno has predicted a 1-0 'easy' win for Juve. Dida has only let in 1 goal at home this seasin in Serie A, in the 2-1 win against Bologna in Week 2.

Thuram vs. Serginho

Thuram continues to patrol Juve's right flank and even though he has improved recently, he is still a long way from the form that he has shown in the past couple of seasons that has linked him to a lucrative move to Man Utd. Some tend to believe that Thuram's international duties with France during the summer as well as the long season he had might be having their toll on the ageing defender. However, Thuram has scored his only goal in a Bianconeri shirt against Milan last season, with some classy celebration too. Serginho might be the definite answer to Milan's eternal left-back problem as he impressed defensively in that position during last week's match against Doria. However, the Brazilian tends to go forward and might leave alot of spaces behind that could well be exploited by Juve's dangermen.

Legrottaglie vs. Shevchenko

Sheva is dreaming of scoring his 100th goal for Milan in his fourth season with the Rossoneri in none other than Gianluigi Buffon's net. However, before reaching that magical landmark, Sheva will need to negotiate his way through while Nicola Legrottaglie will be trying hard to keep him at bay. A busy night is expected for the ex-Chievo defender as Sheva has already scored a handful of goals (six) against Juve, including goal of the season last year. Legrottaglie was signed by Moggi during the summer under Roma's noses as he was very close to joining them instead. He has scored a single goal until now against his former club (Chievo) and proved important to Juve's defence as it suffered during his long absence.

Montero vs. Tomasson

Tomasson plays for the second consecutive time, replacing the injured Inzaghi. But will he be able to win the physical battle agaisnt the solid Montero especially that he has been left on the sidelines for a long time? The Danish striker rarely disapoints Ancelotti when coming from the bench and has won the title 'Supersub' or 'Emergency Striker'. Afterall, he scored Milan's first goal against Sampdoria last week and showed his ability to deliver when needed on numerous other occasions. Montero has been rotated by Lippi during the different matches in the season, giving the chance to other players like Iuliano and Tudor to marshall the defence. This deserved rest should boost his performance and concentration in this match.

Zambrotta vs. Simic

Zambro is the player that has been used the most by Lippi during this early stage of the season due to his tactical and physical importance. He is expected to play more defensively though in this match but might go forward to meet Milan's right-back, Simic. The Croat has been used by Ancelotti whenever facing 'big' teams due to his mental and defensive strenghts, stopping any opposing players from coming forward. Simic used to play as a central defender when he joined from Inter, but was turned into right-back by Carlo Ancelotti.

Appiah vs. Rui Costa

Appiah is enjoying his days at Juve as he has exceeded all expectations with a rock solid performance in the Bianconeri shirt. In fact, along with Zambrotta, Appiah has been heavily used by Lippi as a utility player. Rui Costa, on the other side, is having a mixed campaign as he was overshadowed by Kaka earlier this season and would be eager to shine in this match to satisfy the everdemanding Milan fans and win his place back in the starting line-up.

Tacchinardi vs. Kaka

Tacchi will need all of his skills on Saturday night to offset the threat of Kaka. The Brazilian prodigy has settled down quickly in Serie A - unlike his international teammate Rivaldo - and have won the hearts of the Rossoneri faithful. He scored his first official goal for Milan in the very special 'Milan derby' and quickly dislodged Rui Costa out of Ancelotti's starting eleven.Tacchi was rested in last week's win against Brescia and is expected to be ready for this very tough task (containing Kaka).

Davids vs. Gattuso

One of the 'true' battles in this match is between two of the best midfielders in Serie A. Davids might help Tacchi in midfied but will also drift to the left of midfield and help with counter-attacks. Gattuso will be in the other end and would work on shooting down any attempts from Juve to go forward. Gattuso is one of the favourite players to the Milan fans due to his total commitment to the Red and Black shirt. It is apparent in his recent displays that he has improved all aspects of his play, including scoring goals himself and creating dangerous assists for his teammates. However, the ex-Rangers midfielder is usually ignored by Azzurri coach - Trap, but is still perfectly settled in Milan. The same couldn't be said about Davids as he is constantly being linked with a move out of Juve seeing that his current contract ends in the summer.

Nedved vs. Pirlo

Nedved was devastated to miss the Champions League final against Milan last season and would be eager to leave his mark this time around. Pavel is in fine form and scored a magnificient goal against Brescia last week. He is a favourite to land the Golden Ball award (ironically against next week's opponent Maldini) for his exploits with Juve and the Czech Republic team. Pirlo had a disastrous match against Juve last season in the Delle Alpi and might well be having nightmares of that match. Pirlo will have a tough job tamming the raring Czech.

Miccoli vs. Maldini

Miccoli is expected to make a surprise appearance in this match as Di Vaio was expected to feature instead. But if played, Miccoli should use his pace against Maldini especially that Milan will most probably control ball possesion for huge portions of the match but will be exposed during swift counter attacks. Milan's captain have shown some difficulties when dealing with fast players in the past such as Inter's Obafemi Martins. Miccoli is in good form after scoring 2 goals in the Serie A encounter against Ancona even though he has failed to find the target against Ancona last weekend due to good goalkeeping from Brescia's Saja.

Trezeguet vs. Nesta

Trezegol is expected to be closely manmarked by the world's most stylish defender, Alessandro Nesta. However, any slip-up by the ex-Lazio captain could well lead to a Juve goal as Trezeguet seems to have finally recovered his goalscoring touch back. Trezeguet should also have the aerial (heading) ability to his advantage. Scoring agaisnt Milan in the San Siro will certainly please the Bianconeri fans, especially after the unparallel displays he has shown since the beginning of the season. Maldini recently stated that Nesta was Milan's best signing over the years and was essential to Milan's recent success.

Tactical Setup

Lippi and Ancelotti are no strangers to each other, they have faced each other on many different occasions before. This season Lippi has added weapons in the form of battler Appiah and speedster Miccoli. Lippi can also rely on Legrottaglie's defensive ability. Ancelotti on the other hand, welcoms Kaka to the Milan setup to add quality to his already offensive squad. Carlo also signed new fullbacks from the capital Rome in the form of Roma's Cafu and Lazio's Pancaro.

Even though both teams appear to play with similar tactics (4-3-1-2). It is clear to many that Juve's strength stems from the solidity and cohesiveness of the team. The team functions as one unit with its departments interconnected and organzied effectively. The engine of the team is well-oiled thanks to the fluidity of Pavel Nedved and the utility of Zambrotta and Appiah. All Juve attackers have scored goals bar the injured Zalayeta.

Milan on the other hand depend on the quality of the individual players on display. Shevchenko looks to be returning to his top form after a season in the wilderness, he alone has scored more than half of the total number of goals scored by Milan. One would wonder what would happen to Milan should Sheva ever feel as much as a headache.

So, will Milan be able to bring Juve's remarkable run to a halt? Or will the Bianconeri prove to be too strong for the European Champions to handle, even in their own fortress - the San Siro? A draw between those two powerhouses would surely come as good news to Capello's boys as they face Reggina the following day. Everything should be revealed in Saturday night's clash of titans.

Quick Facts:

Del Piero and co. are Serie A's topscorers with 18 goals scored between 9 different players.

The most number of Juve goals (four) have been scored during the 46-50 period (first 5 minutes of the second half) of Serie A matches.

Milan have bagged in 15 goals in Serie A, scored between 6 different players.

The striker David Trezeguet, goal machine of Juventus FC chatted with ESPNdeportes.com before the Juve-Milan game.

(Reuters)ROMA (ESPNdeportes.com) -- In the eve of the transcendental clash between Juventus and Milan, direct encounter between the 2 unbeaten sides of serie A, ESPNdeportes.com was with David Trezeguet, that told us about his experiences and sensations before facing the rival who took away the Champions league from his hands.

In Turin always rains

In Turin always rains. It is almost a divine rule, that would have to be written down in the tour guides and the geographic maps. The city, calm and elegant, is intoned perfectly with the gray colors of the autumn, and the cold air , forces its citizens to dress country heavy and quilted pilots. But soccer, is known, does not know limits climatic nor temperature. With rain, snow or ardent sun, the players always train, especially in the eve of a transcendental encounter like Milan versus Juventus, the challenge between both sharpshooting of the "most difficult league in the world" .

Saturday at night in the stage of San Siro. Surrounded in a wool scarf, this correspondent of ESPNdeportes.com observes the physical training of Juventus, that soon, in the evening, also will make the second turn, this time with a mincemeat between holders and substitutes. The players laugh and joke between each other ,then return to the field to do an exercise of abdominal, but he notices himself clearly that the climate is serious and is concentrated, like must be it before a duel that can be worth a portion of the Scudetto of this season.

A duel with a rival who left a deep scar in this team(Juventus), because it took away from their hands, just in the last instance, the "Orejuda"(CL cup) and the possibility of making a doublet, Scudetto and Champions League, almost historical. A rival who never gave up, like all the others, since Barcelona, Deportivo and Real Madrid couldnt stand against the almighty Juve: the physical power, the technique of its champions, and specially its inflexible will of victory.

In this new season, Juventus started yet, screaming loudly that this will be "the season". Nevertheless, again, like a shade on the lookout, Milan never step back, and after seven dates in the SERIE A, he is the only one that could stand against the raging performances of Juventus (six victories and a tie), the only one that followed and accepted the challenge.

The "Destiny", under form of fixture , decided to end that persecution , and decided to put both teams face to face in the same field. And for that reason Juventus is prepared, in a cold morning, gray and rainy, incubating in the deepest of its heart .....the desire of revenge.

MILAN WAS an EXAMPLE FOR us

Finally approaches us, already changed after a good hot shower, the Juventus striker, the franc - Argentine David Trezeguet.

With his habitual smile and its behavior measured and almost timid, the player complies for the preliminaries of rite, the soundtest and color, and listens with attention the first question.

ESPN- Several times you declared that you are an admirer of the game of Milan...

TREZ- It is truth, I believe that Milan brought a breeze of newness in Italian soccer, a soccer that always was characterized by a greater defensive attitude and its tactical care. However, in the last season, Milan demonstrated that it is possible to play different, associating to several talented ones in the field, and that the dominion of the ball guarantees of equal way the necessary tactical cover. Most excellent, in my opinion, it is that playing offensive Milan more fort, because dominated the game and the adversaries, leaving them without chances of creating dangerous plays against them.
It is clear that, for my taste and my South American way to feel the game, this is the ideal formula.

ESPN- Good, but in the Manchester final all this pretty game was not seen...

TREZ- In Manchester we played a final, that was very tight and fought in the middle of the field. Nevertheless, I have to recognize, no matter how hard it hurts to us, that Milan was the right winner, especially by everything what it had shown throughout the season. You do not forget that we arrived at the end with some luck, specially before lost Barcelona, and after losing both games with Manchester United. Only the home-match against Real Madrid was truely excellent. In fact, all this left a good lesson us, and in this new Juventus season, we is trying to play more offensive also, without forgetting our habitual weapons, as the tenacity and the unfolding. For that reason I say that, somehow, Milan also showed the way to Juventus.

ESPN- Then, you are anxious to face Milan, to see Juventus´s evolution?

TREZ- It is fascinating for Me and my team, and I am always anxious to play against them. It motivates me to think that I will be against the best central defense in the world, two players like Maldini and Nesta who add experience, titles, class, everything. It motivates me and I want to prove myself, as a personal challenge: in Manchester I couldnt find the way, but I know that I can do it and I want to demonstrate it, as well as we want to demonstrate that all Juventus grew.

ESPN- So, this is like a revenge¿?

TREZ- No, this cannot be the reamcth of that final, the Cup went away and it will never return, no matter how hard we often win against Milan in the future. It will not either be a decisive game for the Scudetto, because we know that the scudetto race will be decided in the last 2 months. But also it will be very important to win, to establish hierarchies, to demonstrate that we are superior to the champions of Europe. Anyway, I do not have doubts that, at this moment, we are both the strongest teams of Italy and the continent.

THE PITCH´S Problem

ESPN- You are David, without a doubt a winner, one customary to win the Finals and to be protagonist. How you lived the missed PK in Manchester?

TREZ- It was very hard, without doubts. We are conscious that we did not played a good match, that we did not manage to give the best of us, and this bond for me also. But the important thing is that this bad experience served us as lesson, we could digest it and assimilate it, and as i told you before,Juventus is trying, no.. in fact juevntus is playing an offensive game without leaving his old qualities behind. For that reason, I believe that now we are still stronger than before.

ESPN-In Manchester you were not in good physical training conditions, and that was very important. How do you feel know?

TREZ- The previous season was a true challenge, for me. Luckily now IM totally recovered, I am working hard and I hope to be able to reach the maximum fit at the decisive moments. But already I am feeling very well, and that have to do with the team´s formation, as i said to you is more offensive, with three talened players who try to supply passes and to add aggresivity in the area.

ESPN-- Right now i was checking your training and i noticed that you have an excellent understanding with Camoranesi. That is because both speak the same language?

TREZ- With Mauro I spoke the same soccer language, we felt soccer in the same way, our roots are Latin, and that at the time is being understood in the field, with just a shout or a glance, feels like and sum. Mauro is a great player, I am not the one that has to discover his talent and conditions, but I really believe that he is a perfect player for Juventus, because he has an enormous will, an ability to work and incredible desire to win, and these are just the characteristics of this club.

ESPN- David, this time we will let you close the note. Say what you want

TREZ- There is something that seems fundamental to me: as it said to you, I believe that Juventus and Milan are, at the present time, the best thing that European soccer can offer, and is a true pity that a so transcendental and important game, must be played on a bad turf as the one in San Siro.
The stage of Milan is beautiful, one of prettiest in the world, but exactly for that reason is still more lamentable that is not managed to solve the problem of the turf.

It can seem a smaller subject, but David chose to close something that demonstrates to us clearly how certain was all those that said to us before: Juventus worries to play well, with offensive schemes and respect with the ball. Is not enough just winning it, they want to beat Milan with their own weapons.

Hopefully it is the announcement of an unforgettable game. Dont miss it!.

1-1 full time. a well deserved draw for both side. ref is obviously on juve side for not giving any yellow cards for the disgraceful behavior of juve players. trezeguet should have been sent off in the first incident. Tacchinardi should be sent off in the second incident with a few other juve players getting yellow cards for the attack on pirlo. no wonder so many people crying foul after facing juve.

only in the second half, both teams start to play football. based on the football on display, a draw is a fair result for both teams. juve was the slightly better side.

another thing, juve is now the team i hate most. their players have done enough to take over man u in my most hated team list( which by the way only consist of man u and juve)

Serie A Week 8 - 1/11/03 (20.30)

Milan 1 - 1 Juventus
Tomasson 66 (M), Di Vaio 84 (J)
San Siro

A stunning Marco Di Vaio strike cancelled out Jon Dahl Tomasson's goal as Milan and Juve remain locked at the top.

These two teams fought for the Champions' League and Italian Supercup over the last few months, but now find themselves battling for the top of the Serie A table. Joint leaders going into this game, both clubs had scored in every single round and were unbeaten.

There were injury worries for both outfits, as Alessandro Del Piero and Pippo Inzaghi did not even make the bench. Andriy Shevchenko has a good record of scoring against the Bianconeri, while Pavel Nedved had the opportunity of facing Milan after missing the Champions' League Final due to a ban.

Manuel Rui Costa was given the nod ahead of Kaka', while Serginho retained his left-back position. Bizarrely, the kick-off was delayed by ten minutes due to a traffic jam outside the Stadium that caught the Juventus team bus.

Juventus had the first shot on goal after four minutes with a fierce Nedved piledriver palmed out for a corner kick. Marco Di Vaio then failed to take full advantage of a defensive error, while Serginho's brave intervention prevented David Trezeguet taking a free header.

Milan slowly gained more of a grip on the game after a strong Juve start and Gianluigi Buffon controlled a Gennaro Gattuso drive from almost 30 metres, then the Italian Number 1 punched a dangerous ball off Shevchenko's head.

The tension was high between these old rivals and a scuffle broke out between Dario Simic and Trezeguet with an apparent elbow from the Frenchman.

Another more determined fight exploded before the break when Milan carried on playing despite the fact Nedved was on the ground at the other end of the field. At least ten players were involved in the brawl and Buffon was forced to hold a livid Maldini back.

Shevchenko skipped past Paolo Montero and placed a slide-rule pass in to the centre, but Stephan Appiah was able to clear before a teammate could pounce.

Despite the tension, the first yellow card fell to Gianluca Zambrotta for a foul from behind on Serginho on 50 minutes.

The Rossoneri went close when a Serginho cross was fingertipped off Shevchenko's head from close range.

The strain on the field rose further when Shevcheko hit the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a very tight offside decision.

Moments later Montero was forced into a desperate challenge on Gattuso as he strode into the six-yard box.

But Juventus went even closer to an opening goal on 56 minutes when Di Vaio volleyed a deflected Camoranesi cross on to the near post with Dida beaten.

The Brazilian goalkeeper then performed a great reaction save to palm away Trezeguet's shot from eight yards.

Milan fought back immediately and a Serginho cross caused havoc with Shevchenko and Rui Costa unable to get a solid touch on it.

A clearly unhappy Clarence Seedorf was substituted by Massimo Ambrosini.

Mere seconds later Milan took the lead through Jon Dahl Tomasson. The Juve defence tried to play the offside trap on a corner kick, but failed to notice Pirlo's through ball to the unmarked Tomasson from nine yards. Replays suggest that Camoranesi was the man keeping his opponents onside.

The Dane, who was only on the field due to Inzaghi's thigh injury, also netted in last week's 3-0 win over Sampdoria.

Juve poured forward in search of an equaliser and Di Vaio thought he had it with a free header at the back post, but Dida performed one of the best saves of his career to palm it out.

Marcello Lippi threw on Fabrizio Miccoli, while Milan turned to a 4-4-2 with Serginho in his habitual more advanced position and Kaka' partnering Shevchenko upfront.

Juventus found their equaliser and it was well worth the wait. Di Vaio unleashed a simply unstoppable volley from 20 metres that slotted into the top corner beyond Dida's outstretched hand. There was also some fine set-up work by Trezeguet to lift the ball up for the ex-Parma player's left foot.

There was bad news in the final minutes for both teams. Serginho and Enzo Maresca seemed to sprain ankles during awkward falls, but the Juventus midfielder appeared to have the worst injury.

Milan: Dida; Simic, Maldini, Nesta, Serginho; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf (Ambrosini 64); Rui Costa (Kaka' 77); Tomasson (Pancaro 74), Shevchenko

Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Miccoli 74), Tacchinardi (Maresca 81), Appiah; Nedved (Iuliano 86); Di Vaio, Trezeguet

Lippi hails Di Vaio 'genius'
Saturday 1 November, 2003

Marcello Lippi claims Juventus could easily have won tonight’s showdown with Milan and praised Marco Di Vaio.

“To be honest, I thought that to lose this game would have been horribly unfair,” said the Bianconeri boss after going a goal down. “We played well and Dida was man of the match for Milan.”

The Rossoneri were winning thanks to a Jon Dahl Tomasson strike, but Juve got on level terms with a magnificent Marco Di Vaio goal.

“Di Vaio failed to score with that volley that hit the woodwork,” noted Lippi, “but he didn’t let his head drop and when trying it a second time got it on target.”

Both goals seemed to match Lippi’s pre-match prediction that either an error or a particularly special move would decide the result.

“I said beforehand that these two teams are balanced and a moment of genius would decide it. The whole team played with real character and passion, so I can only be proud of them.”

Milan had taken the lead through Jon Dahl Tomasson’s tap-in, although he was kept onside by Mauro German Camoranesi.

“Tomasson’s goal was created by an error that should not be used against Camoranesi, as he had a great game overall.”

The San Siro field was partially re-laid during the week, but there were still problems with the infamous field.

“It certainly is difficult to play on this pitch,” added Lippi, “and you use up more energy in the simple things such as changing direction and stepping up a gear.”

tomasson pushes tacchi...legro pushes tomasson...then maldini pushes legro.

scuffle after Milan failed to kick the ball out with Nedved on the ground..( bad tackles on Nedved)

no portsmanship from the Europeans Champs..

"The Juve players are surrounding the ref, furious that play was not stopped for Maldini's challenge on Nedved, which the replay shows to be tough but fair!!"

Milan also played very a physical and rough game!

Overall, the referee for this match SUCKS!

i watch the whole match and i am furious with the attitude of the ref. even if he want to give chances to the players and not give out the red card he should at least have given yellow cards to warn the players.

its tacci who whack pirlo with appiah and a few others just pushing him. tacci even grab his hair. tomasson then came from behind and push tacci away and warn him not to do that. maldini then came to push away the juve players(u have like five of them) surrounding pirlo. milan have no intention of fighting its juve who have been provoking since the start. this is not the way a pro player should behave. if u have seen it then u will know its even worse than the aresenal vs man u game. i suggest u try to watch it and see how trezeguet elbow simic( but he help to calm the players down during the tacci fight). the game itself is not really rough but the ref sucks by giving out a lot of freekicks instead of allowing play to continue.

i have never dislike juve before( i even supported them in the CL). now its hatred to the core unless they apologize for the behavior they display. this is not about the team u support, its about sportmanship mind u. the fact is nedved pretend to be injured when he is not, he lie down for so long just hoping to get the ball back. after the ref stop the game, he can stand up and continue the game wtf. i like nedved and i am absolutely disgusted by his pretence( as good as rivaldo in WC).

dreamer75, u should have know that i never said anything bad about juve before. i am not biased to give this comments. like i said i hate man u but i am also absolutely disgusted by what arsenal players did. pls be fair to all players not just which team u support.

CL: Real Sociedad - Juventus (preview)

In recent years we've struggled somewhat in the group stage(s) of the Champions League, but now we're a point away from qualification at this early stage of the season. Sociedad are fighting for the second qualifying spot with the other two teams in the group and will look to give it their all infront of their home fans against one of Europe's best. At the moment Juve are on fire, and there's nothing that could cap off a fantastic week of football better than clinching qualification in Europe's elite competition. :)

A brilliant late equaliser from Marco Di Vaio salvaged Juventus a point from their table-topping clash with AC Milan on Saturday.

Di Vaio latched onto a flicked pass from strike partner David Trezeguet to lash a blistering left-foot volley into the top corner of the net, leaving Milan goalkeeper Dida grasping thin air.

It was a rare moment of real quality in a match that often threatened to boil over, and on occasion did.

The heated atmosphere was not consigned to the pitch either.

The match had been delayed by 15 minutes because of traffic, and skirmishes between rival supporters outside the San Siro stadium.

Juve's bus arrived at the venue late because of congestion.

Milan, who beat Juventus in the Champions League final last year, came into the match joint top on 19 points with the Bianconeri but looked set to go solo when they took the lead after 65 minutes through Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The Rossoneri held that advantage until six minutes from time but they could do little to prevent Di Vaio's moment of magic snatching a share of the spoils for Juve.

Despite the magnitude of the game and a San Siro jam-packed with 80,000 fans, the first half was a rather dull affair as both sides cancelled each other out. Juventus were the only team to register shots on goal, and both their chances fell to Pavel Nedved.

In the fourth minute, he found himself in space on the right edge of the area. Moving more centrally he lashed in a shot towards the bottom right of goal, forcing Dida to push the ball out for a corner.

In the 36th minute, Nedved dispatched a similar shot from the other side of the area. This time his shot was easier for Dida, the Brazilian international smothering the effort.

Milan's response was a couple of long-distance efforts from Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo, neither of which gave Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon too much trouble.

There were signs of tempers being frayed as the half-time whistle approached with Igor Tudor showing his anger at Pirlo for continuing play while Nedved lay injured in the Milan half.

That resulted in confrontations between a number of opposing players but referee Salvatore Racalbuto managed to keep a lid on things. He only produced two cards in the whole game, handing out yellow cards to Milan's Clarence Seedorf and Gianluca Zambrotta of Juventus.

The second half was just as competitive as the first, but much more lively in terms of goal action.

Milan had the ball in net in the 51st minute after Andriy Shevchenko had rounded Dida and slotted home, but Racalbuto ruled the goal out after adjudging the Ukrainian striker to have started his run from an offside position.

Five minutes later Juve created their best chance of the match up until that point.

Mauro Camoranesi sent in a cross from the right which Di Vaio met with a flying volley. However, he was denied a spectacular goal by the woodwork.

The former Parma man would still get himself a showreel moment by the end of the game though.

Soon after Di Vaio's misfortune, Trezeguet forced Dida to make a diving save with a shot on the turn from close range.

Milan weathered the pressure, though, and they took the lead just after the hour-mark when Tomasson latched onto a prodded-through Pirlo pass to fire home from inside the six-yard box.

Juve should never be written off, however, and in Di Vaio they had a player who always looked capable of producing something special.

And so it proved when the Italy international stunned the home faithful with what is likely to be a serious contender for any Serie A goal of the season competition.

Both sides would probably have settled for a point before the match but they will be less pleased with the injuries sustained during the game, especially with vital Champions League coming up this week.

Milan winger Sergio Serginho twisted his ankle in a challenge, while Juventus lost Enzo Maresca, who was carried off on a stretcher after having his foot trapped under team-mate Stephen Appiah.

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi said it would have "been a joke" if AC Milan had won last night's 1-1 draw at the San Siro.

Jon Dahl Tomasson handed Milan the lead with 25 minutes to go before Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio popped up with the equalizer five minutes before the end.

"It would have been a joke if we had lost this match," declared Lippi afterwards. "Luckily, we had enough left to find an equalizer.

"We must recognize their keeper Dida, who with his defensive unit kept Milan in the game.

"Di Vaio missed some chances, but credit to him to stay focused and find the equaliser.

"I am very satisfied with the performance of Juventus. We have played with personality, creating good chances. The pitch was poor and the players made hard work of it staying on their feet."

Juventus are looking for possible alternatives to David Trezeguet as talks over a new contract continue to stall.

The Frenchman is only contracted to the Turin giants until the summer of 2005 and could be heading for the exit according to reports in Italy.

Juve want to keep the striker and the former Monaco man wishes to stay but a dispute over pay may see the two part company.

Trezeguet currently earns just over £1m a season, which is nowhere near as high as some other members of the squad.

The international is said to be wanting three times that amount to stay at the Delle Alpi but the club are not so keen to offer that kind of money.

That means that if an agreement can’t be reached before the end of the season, then he will probably be sold by the club who wouldn’t want to lose him for nothing a year later.

Rumours circulating in the peninsula on Monday suggest that transfer chief Luciano Moggi is looking at Brescia’s Andrea Caracciolo as a possible replacement.

Juventus scouts were in the crowd to watch the 22-year-old in action against Parma on Sunday.

The Bianconeri would have also got a good look at fellow transfer target Alberto Gilardino of Parma who netted in their 3-2 victory.

Opinion: The best and the rest

The best…
Christian Vieri (Inter)
Christian Vieri got back on the scoresheet against Chievo last night to put his poor form behind him. Heckled by his own fans last week, he proved that if the quality of service to him is good then he will put the ball away. He’s on the up which is good news for Inter and Italy.

Nelson Dida (Milan)
He was undoubtedly the man of the match in the 1-1 draw with Juventus. He didn’t make one mistake all night and made two outstanding saves to deny Juventus all three points. He was a joy to watch from the stands.

Marco Di Vaio (Juventus)
What a goal! He’s often said in the past that he wants to prove to people that he deserves to be at Juventus and that volley against Milan has left few doubts. He’s now a top quality striker, one who’s diagonal runs and powerful shots consistently cause havoc.

The rest…
Stephen Appiah (Juventus)
He didn’t play badly against Milan but that was the kind of game where the dynamism of Edgar Davids may have been more suited. Appiah did his job but the Dutchman, left on the bench, could have offered more.

David Trezeguet (Juventus)
Trezeguet had a poor game against Milan. The Juventus system may leave him isolated at times but he didn’t look world class at the San Siro. His elbow on Dario Simic was also a disgrace. He should have seen red.

Morgan De Sanctis (Udinese)
The goalkeeper’s error against Lazio gifted the away side the maximum three points. Despite signing a new contract last week, these are tough times for the No 1. Maybe he should stop trying to impress so much. After all, none of the big clubs are looking for a new ‘keeper.

Juventus will be without four first team regulars for the Champions’ League test at Real Sociedad this week.

Boss Marcello Lippi named a 20-man squad for Wednesday’s game but some familiar faces will be missing.

Lippi has resisted the temptation to include Alex Del Piero despite seemingly recovering from a calf strain.

The Italian champions will also be without David Trezeguet, Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta. Enzo Maresca and Salvatore Fresi are omitted too because of injuries.

However, the Bianconeri look good for a place in the next round after winning all three of their group games so far.

A point in San Sebastian may be enough to ensure qualification even with games against Olympiakos and Galatasaray to follow.

Squad: Appiah, Birindelli, Buffon, Camoranesi, Chimenti, Conte, Davids, Di Vaio, Ferrara, Iuliano, Legrottaglie, Miccoli, Mirante, Montero, Nedved, Olivera, Pessotto, Tacchinardi, Tudor, Zalayeta.

11/03/2003. Edgar Davids has declared through his agent this afternoon that he would like to carry on playing for Juventus.

"England, Spain and Italy are all valid options," he said. "But Juventus must remember that if they will give Edgar the chance to stay he would consider it his first option".

Anoeta Stadium. Wednesday November 05, 2003. 20.45 CET

Next stop for Juve: an intriguing clash in San Sebastian.

The Bianoconeri travel to the Basque country with high spirits thanks to the entertaining 1-1 draw achieved at Milan on the weekend, a result that comfirmed their sparkling form and kept their unbeaten record in all competitions alive. The same couldn't be said about Sociedad. The team arrives to the match on the back of some mixed results, after the bright start to the Champions League and 2 straight wins - including an away win in Istanbul against Galatasaray - the team has been brought back to earth with a disastrous defeat in La Liga against Atletico (0-4) and a draw against 10-man Barca (3-3). La Liga's last season's runners-up are starting to stutter and might have finally realized the difficult and daunting task of competing in two different fronts.

Tactical Set-up

Lippi is expected to continue with his rotation system that has been a success so far. First team regulars Trezeguet, Thuram, and Zambrotta will all remain in Turin along with the injured Maresca and Fresi. Del piero is set to miss this one out in anticipation for the Udinese game. Some players that have been named could finally have some action time and they include: Conte, Birindelli, Pessotto, Olivera, and Zalayeta. But as Zambrotta pointed out at the start of the season, Juve have assembled one of the strongest sides in the past years because the squad is deep and whoever is called to play gets the job done.

Miccoli might partner Milan hero Di Vaio in an interesting partnership that was deemed succesful in the pre-season campaign. Davids and Tudor are expected to return to the midfield fold. Nedved was substituted in the second half against Milan and might be used in this match too. Iulaino or Ferrara could get their chance in defence while Birindelli and Pessotto take the fullback responsibilites.

Nihat has struck a perfect partnership with ex-Juve striker Kovacevic last season but was left out of the starting lineup in the first leg as the coach opted for a more careful approach, playing Kova upfront on his own, and switching to a five-man midfield. The coach also left out De Pedro, and once introduced the team suddenly looked lively. Both (Nihat and De Pedro) are expected to start this time around.

Russian midfielder Karpin will also be briming with confidence after he finally scored in the Barca 3-3 draw. He has been critisiced for his lacklusture performances but is finally looking to get back to his old self.

Sociedad are a mere shadow of the side that battled Real for last season's La Liga. They will need to produce a much-improved performance than the one that saw them shell-shocked a fortnight ago in the Delle Alpi. Will they be able to bounce back in Euope?

Juve, on the other hand, arrive to this match with some fresh faces, who nevertheless have something common with the other teammates: a Bianconeri heart. They wouldn't want to disappoint the coach and fans, and would want to keep their trust on them.

If the Bianconeri fans are sceptical of their defence, then the Sociedad fans must by biting their nails as the team has conceded no less than 7 goals in the last 2 La Liga matches in the space of one week.

A hard fought battle is expected in another lovely European night.

Quick Facts:

Juve have scored 8 goals and conceded 4 goals in Group D.

Sociedad have scored 5 goals and conceded 5 goals in the same group.

Juve have comitted the most number of fouls in the group (73), Sociedad have comitted the least number of fouls (32).

The most number of goals scored (23) in this season's UEFA Champions League until now have been during the 76-90 period.

Kovacevic is on top of UEFA's 'Ruled Offside' list with 10 offside calls in 3 matches.

My predicted line-up:

Buffon
Pessoto (Tudor), Montero, Ferrara, Birindelli
Camoranesi, Davids, Appiah
Nedved
Miccoli, Di Vaio

This might be nice to see if Davids and Appiah could play well together. Im really excited to see MIccoli and Di Vaio unleashed in Europe. THat will be interesting to see how well they combine to impress Lippi. Honestly, if Di Vaio scores a good goal today and plays well, I think he should be a serious Juve starter and be starting in all the "important" matches. He has really proved to be a great striker. However, this could causes even more confusion for Trap for Euro 2004

Video evidence will not be used after David Trezeguet was caught on camera elbowing Dario Simic.

The hitman was spotted raising his arm to Simic’s face during the heated 1-1 draw between Milan and Juventus.

Several scuffles broke out around the field in Saturday’s game, but the Disciplinary Commission chose not to take any action.

Video evidence is very rarely used in Italy and will only be considered if the officials did not witness an off the ball incident.

Referee Salvatore Racalbuto claimed in his report that he had seen the clash, but did not consider it to be "violent".

Seven players have been suspended in Serie A this week, but Brescia midfielder Francelino Matuzalem has been slapped with a two-match ban for his horrific two-footed tackle on Parma’s Daniele Bonera.

Two-Match Ban:

Matuzalem (Brescia)

One-Match Ban:

Marchegiani (Chievo)

Perrotta (Chievo)

Donadel (Parma)

Lanzaro (Empoli)

Carrozzieri (Sampdoria)

Piangerelli (Lecce)

i think di vaio will still be a deputy to vieri or del piero. don't forget miccoli also has a chance in the italian line up.

right now i think inzaghi and vieri are the most likely starter for italy when play 442
if playing 4231, vieri will play up front, followed by camoranesi, totti and del piero

just my opinion lo.

as for the comments on football politics, whether the referee not seeing trezeguet elbowing simic is not really up to us to decide. there may be views that juventus has been more favored by officials. well, the fact is that everytime an incident is not handled properly by the officials, people will be regarded it as the officials siding the bigger clubs or their more favored clubs. there is no point debating on it, as it will never end. whether these cases are true or not, we are not sure. but i believe there is a possibility. nonetheless, it is these issues that made the game so interested, as it is a game of life. i think we should continue to do what we love most, to watch the game we all love and to support the clubs we enjoy watching.

i agree roma is badly treated last season. i think its because of sensi, seem like nobody can get along with him. juve have been the favoured team for very long already but not until this extent. the milan-juve match is really extreme loh.

i think juve will most probably draw this game.

11/05/2003. Juventus will be aiming to secure at least a point at Real Sociedad in order to qualify to the Champions League's second round two games before the group phase ends.

If they play like they did two weeks ago against last season's Liga runner-ups they won't have any problems achieving their goal.

In that game the Italians totally outplayed their Spanish opponents and were up four goals to nil after only 65 minutes of play.

Then, a brief lapse of concentration allowed Sociedad to pull back within two, but by then the game's storyline was already well written.

This time Juve are not expected to have the same easy ride, especially because they will be playing in the Basque side's fortress, commonly known as the Anoeta.

Even though Real Sociedad have had an awful start to the season, they are yet to lose on their home turf, and given the fact that Juve coach Marcello Lippi will rest some of his best stars, this streak is set to be extended.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Denoueix will have all of his best players at his disposal, even Darko Kovacevic, who has not trained for the past two days.

On his part Lippi will do a mini-revolution, allowing players such as Davids, Conte, Iuliano, Pessotto, and Birindelli to get the nod from the starting whistle instead of warming the bench as they have done for most of the time this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Darko Kovacevic (Real Sociedad)-Invisible in the Delle Alpi, he will try in all manners to redeem himself in-front of his former team-mates.

Fabrizio Miccoli (Juventus)-Sociedad are more than slightly better than Ancona. Puglia's Romario is ready for the new test.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Real Sociedad-4-4-2: Westerveld, Altor, Schurrer, Jauregi, Aranzabal, De Pedro, Alkiza, Xabi Alonso, Karpin, Kovacevic, Nihat

Juventus-4-3-3: Buffon, Birindelli, Ferrara, Iuliano, Pessotto, Davids, Tudor, Conte, Di Vaio, Miccoli, Nedved

Champions' League Phase One, Gp D - 5/11/03

Real Sociedad 0 - 0 Juventus
San Sebastian

A 0-0 draw in Spain was enough to seal Juve's passage into the knockout stage.

Juventus needed just one point to be certain of qualification for the knockout stages and had beaten Sociedad 4-2 in Turin. Several top stars were left at home, including Lilian Thuram and David Trezeguet, while Fabrizio Miccoli partnered Marco Di Vaio.

The Spaniards fielded Javier De Pedro from the start after his fine goal in the first encounter, but it was a special occasion for former Juventus striker Darko Kovacevic.

The Yugoslav curled a good effort wide of the near post after nine minutes, but play had already been halted for a handling offence.

Turkish international Nihat then brought a fine save out of Gianluigi Buffon with the outside of his right foot.

Sociedad pushed but were rarely dangerous, testing Buffon with a low cross from Aranzabal that was perilously close to Kovacevic.

Two strikers then failed to get a decisive touch on a smart De Pedro cutback on 33 minutes.

Pavel Nedved was limping during the final minutes of the first half after two particularly tough Alkiza tackles that zeroed in on his ankles.

Alkiza was fortunate not to be booked when he hacked down Edgar Davids as he tried to run into the box. On the resulting Nedved free kick Mark Iuliano nodded back across the face of goal, but Igor Tudor was unable to turn in from six yards.

The first real save of the match came on 41 minutes. Miccoli skipped past two players on the left side of the box and Sander Westerveld flew to palm out his curling effort.

At the dawn of the second half there were timid penalty appeals for a Ciro Ferrara nudge on Kovacevic, but the referee waved play on.

Miccoli was again dangerous with a volley that veered wide of the woodwork.

The game had few real chances, but the Basque side had two in quick succession around the hour mark.

Darko Kovacevic was left alone on goal but his first touch let him down, then Buffon performed a stunning one-handed save on Nihat's solo effort at the near post.

Gianluca Pessotto, who was returning after a long injury lay-off, was replaced by Stephan Appiah, pushing Tudor back into defence.

While Sociedad had most of the possession, Juventus continued to create the best chances and Nedved's fierce drive was parried with some difficulty by Westerveld.

Marcelo Zalayeta made his first real appearance of the season after a series of injury problems.

In the final minute when Miccoli sprinted to reach a Nedved ball forward, but Juaregi accidentally trod on the back of his foot and removed his shoe. Westerveld was able to rush off his line and clear.

<Post-Match Comments>

Real Sociedad: Westerveld; Aitor, Juaregi, Schurrer, Aranzabal; Karpin, Xabi Alonso, Alkiza, De Pedro (Lee 75); Kovacevic, Nihat

Juventus: Buffon; Ferrara, Birindelli, Tudor, Iuliano; Pessotto (Appiah 67), Conte (Tacchinardi 83), Davids; Nedved, Miccoli; Di Vaio (Zalayeta 76)

Marcello Lippi claims the squad rotation system is key to Juve’s success in Serie A and the Champions’ League this season.

“It was a battle of a match, especially in the first half,” he noted of their 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad, “but we found our balance after the break.”

“The lads fought hard in the way that I really appreciate. Now that we are mathematically qualified for the next stage we must make the most of the remaining two games to rotate the squad and preserve energy.”

Three more points are needed to be certain of winning Group D and therefore earning a softer draw for the knockout stage.

“It is no doubt important to top the Group,” added Lippi, “but to be mathematically qualified with two games left is an important achievement.”

Only Real Madrid and Juventus are already assured of their place in the next round, but unlike the Spaniards this side is proud of its strength in depth.

“Our objective is to include all the players in every competition,” revealed the tactician, “so everybody gets to play at least once a week. This keeps everyone hungry, confident and fresh.”

The 0-0 draw in San Sebastian was earned with what could easily be described as a second-string side, including Antonio Conte and Gianluca Pessotto returning from long-term injuries.

“I really liked the sacrifices that Fabrizio Miccoli made tonight to work hard all over the field, while Marco Di Vaio and Marcelo Zalayeta also performed the dual role of midfielder and forward.”

I didn't really expect the very negative and defensive approach from our players but in the end was satisfied with the point we achieved that was our ticket to the next round of the Champions League .. now the important thing is to remain on top of the group to avoid playing the likes of Real Madrid, Man Utd, Chelsea, and other tough opponents .. That could be well achieved with a home win against Olympiakos in Matchday 5 ..

Our best player was by far Buffon .. he made a number of brilliant saves that kept us in the match .. good old Ferrara was also commited in defence whereas Davids excelled even though he gaveaway some balls .. the remaining part of our midfield was ineffective to say the least, whereas our attackers tried their best but were wasteful when we had the opportunity to score from the counter ...

Some players looked rusty like Conte (sometimes I had the feeling he left the pitch and was watching from the stands instead) as well as Pessotto and Birindelli .. But anyway, to give them some credit it was their debut for this season and alot can't be asked from them .. Our defence held on well, and kept Kova away with the offside trap that was instrumental in this match and the key to kill-off any threat from Sociedad ..

Neddy had a shout at the players to wake them up towards the end after a number of minor mistakes by the defenders .. he was really up for it and defended well too !!

All in all, we made it to the next stage but after our brilliant matches since the start of the season , this match could well be forgotten easily by our fans ..

After holding Milan to a 1-1 draw in the San Siro and clinching qualification in the CL, Juve will be at home to face Udinese, who have been inconsistent this season. Del Piero will make his comeback in this match and should play from the start.

Probable line-up:

Buffon
Thuram Legrottaglie Montero Zambrotta
Tacchinardi Appiah
Miccoli Nedved Del Piero
Trezeguet

My prediction:
Juventus 4-1 Udinese :D

Serie A Week 9 - 9/11/03 (15.00)
Juventus-Udinese

Stadio Delle Alpi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Del Piero steps back into the fray after seven weeks on the sidelines with a torn calf muscle.

Juventus have certainly not missed their captain in these two months, notching up four wins and last week’s 1-1 draw at joint leaders Milan. The fixture list sets up a golden opportunity to pull away at the top, as the Rossoneri face a tricky trip to fourth-placed Parma. Having rested several top stars for their midweek Champions’ League outing at Real Sociedad, the team should remain fresh for this test. Marco Di Vaio is on fine form at the moment and his confidence was further boosted by a wonder goal at the San Siro, but Fabrizio Miccoli may get the nod as he returns to full fitness.

Udinese have blown hot and cold so far this season and will be desperate for the return of midfield beacon David Pizarro. The Chilean has been suffering from an upper thigh problem since August and missed the last two Serie A games. All eyes will be on Czech international Marek Jankulovski, a man who will be lining up alongside Pavel Nedved in the Bianconeri squad next season according to the Italian press.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah, Tacchinardi; Camoranesi, Nedved, Di Vaio; Trezeguet

Udinese: De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini, Kroldrup; Castroman, Jorgensen, Pinzi, Jankulovski, Pieri; Iaquinta, Fava

Birthday boy Del Piero raring to go
Friday 7 November, 2003

Alessandro Del Piero admits he is chomping at the bit to make his comeback and celebrate his 29th birthday in style.

“I simply cannot wait until Sunday,” he told his official website. “I am continuing to train and prepare myself, but wait impatiently for November 9.”

The date of his return to the playing field is a particularly apt coincidence, as he will celebrate his birthday during the match with Udinese.

The Juventus captain has been out of action since tearing a calf muscle during the 2-2 draw with Roma on September 20, but the team has done well in his absence and this week qualified for the second round of the Champions’ League.

“My teammates brought back a wonderful souvenir from San Sebastian,” he noted of their crucial 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad.

“Now we must take advantage of this secure spot and concentrate on the Serie A Championship.”

Marcello Lippi also confirmed that Del Piero is ready to step back on to the field during Sunday’s encounter.

“He is fit for selection,” revealed the Coach. “His return gives this already confident group another boost.”

However, Del Piero will not be picked for the November international friendly games against Poland and the Czech Republic.

JUVENTUS - UDINESE

http://images.soccerage.com/60293.gif http://images.soccerage.com/60303.gif

Delle Alpi Stadium. Sunday November 09, 2003. 15.00 CET

After ensuring qualification to the next round of the Champions League, Juve gets back to business in Serie A – entertaining the other Bianconeri side from Udine here in the Delle Alpi in which all eyes will be on Alex Del Piero, making his comeback here in his crib after a 7-week injury lay-off.

Juve will have the easiest of games – at least on paper – compared to their direct Scudetto rivals as exhausted Milan travel to the Stadio Tardini to face an Adriano-less Parma fresh from their 4-0 heroics in the UEFA Cup whereas Roma get engaged in the ‘Derby della capitale’ against their eternal rivals, Lazio.

Tactical-Setup

Under Tuscan coach Luciano Spalletti, the Friuli outfit plays with the (3-4-1-2) formation which was converted from (3-4-2-1) due to Pizarro’s injury. The defence is led by Argentine veteran Nestor Sensini, supported by Bertotto and Kroldrup. In midfield, the central pairing consists of the young attacking midfielder Pazienza and the more defensive Pinzi. Left wing is occupied by Juve-bound Jankulovski while the right side is reserved for ex-Laziale, Castroman. Playmaking duties are assigned to the creative Jorgensen, who plays behind the tall Iaquinta and the deadly (hat-trick hero) Fava.

For Juve, defence was the key to last season’s success but this time the team is playing with a more attacking mentality without overlooking the defensive duties and this has left the team decently balanced. That’s why we could see Del Piero, Trezeguet, Nedved, and Miccoli all playing at the same time.

Lippi is toying with the idea of playing with (4-2-3-1) with Del Piero-Nedved-Miccoli behind Trezeguet (who was lucky to escape an elbow punishment). Defensive duo Appiah and Tacchi play further behind. Whereas the defensive line welcomes back Thuram, Legro, Montero, and Zambro.

This tactic could prove a major hit in this match as Udinese play with only 3 men behind and that would give many a spaces for Del Piero on the left and Miccoli on the right. Nedved could search for any gaps deep inside and try shots from outside the box himself.

A lot of ink will be devoted to the return of Alex in the Italian newspapers for the build-up of this match. Even though the team has copped well without ’il capitano’, he certainly adds some dimension to the squad, especially in creating assists with perfect passes, winning fouls and converting free-kicks, and what he does best: scoring goals from relatively impossible angles.

So, will the Bianconeri bad boys be in their best behaviour and honour their captain with a win on his birthday? Will Pinturichio himself mark his comeback with a goal? Will Juve finally knock Milan off the top with a win here and go solo? All questions will be answered on Sunday afternoon.

Udinese hasn’t won yet against a ‘big team’ this season. They drew against Inter 0-0 and were defeated against the capital clubs – Lazio and Roma – both at home and with the same score line: 1-2. But will Udinese pull out their first surprise of the season against Juve?

Quick Facts

Juve met Udinese in the Delle Alpi 30 times in Serie A, with Juve winning the majority of matches (22), Udinese winning only 4, and the match ended in a draw in 4 other times.

Juve have scored a total of 74 goals against Udinese, whereas Udinese replied with 31 goals.

Juve’s largest win consists of a 4 goal margin (4-0) or (5-1) achieved 6 times the latest in the 92-93 season (5-1).

Alex Del Piero is Juve's topscorer against Udinese, with 7 goals scored.

During his career, Zambrotta scored 10 goals for Juve in all competitions - 3 of which were against Udinese.

BACKGROUND:

Udinese pay visit to the Serie A leaders at the Delle Alpi of Turin for the 31st time on Sunday afternoon. Statistics are all in favour of Juventus who have won 22 times out of the 30 games played against the fellow bianconeri. Udinese won only 4 times while the match ended in a draw another 4 times.

The last encounter in October 2002 ended with a 1-0 win for the home side thanks to a rare goal by Marcelo Salas. Udinese's last win at the Delle Alpi arrived in November 2000 when a brace by Ruben Sosa cancelled out Alessandro Del Piero's strike. To find the last draw we must go back 13 years, exactly in March 1990 when the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The number of goals scored is also largely in favour of the Old Lady as in 30 matches played, Juventus scored 74 goals while Udinese could only manage to bag in 31.

Juventus arrive for this encounter feeling calm and motivated after succeeding in drawing away to Milan, and therefore holding on to the top spot of Serie A, and qualifying for the next round of the Champions League thanks to another away draw, this time against Real Sociedad. That match also marked the first game of the season for the bianconeri where they did not end on the score sheet.

Udinese are winless for the past two matchdays and will therefore try to at least return back to the Friuli with a point in the bag. To make things worse for them, Pizarro is still out injured.

Another point of interest for the match is the return of Del Piero on his 29th birthday where he will be hoping to get himself a nice birthday gift through a goal.

TEAM NEWS:

JUVENTUS – No more injury worries for Marcello Lippi as Del Piero is back from injury and will most probably be in the starting line-up to celebrate his 29th birthday, preferably with a win and a goal.

UDINESE – Spalletti has Alberto, Gemiti, Goitom, Pizarro and Gargo all out through injury. The most notable absence is that of Pizarro who last summer was very close to joining Juventus. Without him, Udinese lose a lot of quality in midfield.

LINE-UPS:

JUVENTUS (4-2-3-1): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Appiah, Tacchinardi; Miccoli, Nedved, Del Piero; Trezeguet

UDINESE (3-5-2): De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini, Kroldrup; Castroman, Pinzi, Jankulovski, Jorgensen, Manfredini; Iaquinta, Fava

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Del Piero (Juventus): His return will be an extra motivation for the team and for himself, where he can continue where he left-off before the injury.

Fava (Udinese): Last season's Serie B top-scorer has been doing very well in his first season in Serie A. This match might be very important for him to show what he's really worth.

Lippi hails "greatest" Del Piero
Sunday 9 November, 2003

Marcello Lippi has welcomed back the Juventus captain by proclaiming him one of the greatest players in the world.

“Alessandro Del Piero will give us an extra dimension as he is one of the best footballers on the planet,” insisted the Coach, “but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate those who have taken the field in his absence.”

The Bianconeri are undefeated in all competitions this season despite constantly rotating the squad.

Del Piero has been out of action since straining a calf muscle during the 2-2 draw with Roma and will make his comeback against Udinese.

“I have been saying this would be the date of his return for two weeks now,” pointed out Lippi.

“He was rested for the Champions’ League trip to Real Sociedad precisely so that he could be ready for this match.”

The Italian international’s timing is particularly apt, as Del Piero will return to the playing field on his 29th birthday.

“Alessandro will be in the starting line-up,” revealed the Coach, “and will play for at least an hour, possibly the whole 90 minutes.”

However, Lippi warns that the spotlight on Del Piero should not distract Juve from a tough test.

“We must maintain our momentum right up to the Christmas break, and to do that I must rotate the squad and keep everyone fresh.”

“Udinese are a side that have often caused us problems in the past,” he added, “and play some excellent football. We must remain concentrated.”

Serie A Week 9 - 9/11/03 (15.00)

Juventus 4 - 1 Udinese
Jankulovski pen 66 (U), Di Vaio 78, 88 (J), Miccoli 84 (J), Trezeguet 94 (J)
Stadio Delle Alpi

Alessandro Del Piero missed a penalty on his comeback, but his replacements turned the game around and Juve break away at the top.

Del Piero made his comeback seven weeks after tearing a calf muscle and was also able to celebrate his 29th birthday.

There were chances for both sides during the first half, Gianluigi Buffon blocking a fierce Marek Jankulovski effort, while Stephan Appiah and Alessio Tacchinardi saw deflected long-range drives whistle wide of the woodwork.

Mark Iuliano brought a tough save out of Morgan De Sanctis when his header looped towards the top corner.

Czech international Jankulovski has been linked to a summer move to Juventus and showed them what he can do as Buffon rushed off his line to charge down a dangerous counter-attack.

The Italian Number 1 then flew to fingertip a sweeping Martin Jorgensen effort round the post.

De Sanctis was once the understudy to Buffon at the Delle Alpi and made a splendid double save on Gianluca Zambrotta's piledriver and David Trezeguet's follow-up.

Both sides struggled to break through and Mauro Camoranesi saw a goal correctly disallowed for an offside position at the dawn of the second half.

There was an extremely controversial moment on 54 minutes when Juventus were awarded a penalty. Nicola Legrottaglie's header struck Valerio Bertotto on the shoulder blades and then arm, but the Udinese defender was unlikely to have done it on purpose as he was facing the other way.

Nonetheless, Udinese's protests were waved away and Alessandro Del Piero stepped up, but his fierce drive thumped the crossbar. It was his first real effort since suffering a calf strain in September and he was clearly not 100 per cent fit.

That was a costly error, as soon after Udinese were awarded a penalty when Buffon rushed off his line to hack down Dino Fava. The goalkeeper was booked for the intervention and Marek Jankulovski slammed in a powerful spot-kick to give the Friulani a shock lead.

The on-form Di Vaio replaced Del Piero, who could not give himself a birthday gift with that penalty, and Juve poured forward en masse to find an equaliser.

Udinese battened down the hatches and charged down efforts from Di Vaio, Trezeguet and Tacchinardi..

It proved to be an inspired substitution as Di Vaio drew Juventus level with a stunning header. The ex-Parma man leapt above his marker to place the most accurate finish on to the base of the upright and ricocheted in.

Di Vaio nearly netted a second soon after with a low drive that went wide of the near post.

Fabrizio Miccoli also came on and bagged the last-gasp winner as Udinese crumbled under a late siege. Di Vaio's shot was only parried into the path of fellow substitute Miccoli for a close-range tap-in.

The Bianconeri were irresistable and made the result safe in the final minutes with Nedved's fine slide-rule ball for Di Vaio's run at the far post.

David Trezeguet completed the rout in stoppage time when Nedved's pass found him unmarked on the six-yard box.

Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Iuliano, Zambrotta (Tudor 80); Appiah, Tacchinardi, Camoranesi (Miccoli 71); Nedved; Del Piero (Di Vaio 63), Trezeguet

Udinese: De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini, Pierini; Pinzi, Pazienza, Jankulovski, Manfredini, Castroman (Pieri 71); Jorgensen, Fava

Ref: Pieri

Missed penalty: Del Piero 56 (J)

Miccoli's words after the Match

"I know what it feels like to be injured," he said. "I had to stay out a month for an operation on my appendix and when I played again it was really hard".

"Del Piero is a great player and he will make us win a lot of important matches because that is what great players do".

"He is added value for our team and everybody is happy to know that he is back. That is what makes us so good: we are a group of friends that play together".

heavy words form Lippi ;)

Soccer age

11/09/2003. Juventus coach Marcello Lippi once again pointed to his club's squad depth after they recovered from a goal down to beat Udinese 4-1.

"That was a demonstration of the quality of the players we have," he said. "This is certainly the most complete squad I have ever coached. I have never had such a quality squad available to me.

"If I hadn't rested those seven or eight places in midweek (against real Sociedad), maybe we wouldn't have been able to recover the game in the way we did at the end."

We were 1-0 down and Del Piero had just missed a penalty. We tried desperately to surge forward, but every door was slammed shut and our players looked out of sorts. The clock was ticking and around 12 minutes were remaining. Our unbeaten run and top spot were on stake. Mission Impossible??

Our Juventini had other thoughts and the famous never-say-die attitude was up there for everyone to observe and admire. The team utterly refused the defeat and stepped up a gear in search for an equalizer and possibly winning the match. The team was revived and all players were inspired. The efforts were soon awarded as the floodgates were suddenly open and everything turned bright and colorful for us once again. Di Vaio scored two goals, Miccoli one, and Trezeguet one. FOUR goals. All in the space of 15 minutes of madness. You never know in football, you just never know. You have to always be optimistic and have faith in the team.

To be honest, I didn’t believe we were able to turn the match around because Udinese looked very solid at the back and our players looked hopeless. But I guess the Bianconeri beast created by Lippi was just too mighty for little Udinese to handle.

Thanks to our grit and determination, we have now gone solo on top of Serie A- two points ahead of both Milan and Roma (having already played both).

A special mention goes to Legrottaglie who was just amazing at the back. He looked like a blonde version of Nesta – with the same movements inside the pitch and identical style. As for Del Piero, I’m positive he is strong enough to get over this appalling comeback and the penalty miss as he continues to deliver, unscathed, from other more dreadful incidents from the past. He was clearly not 100% fit and was frustrated later on the bench. But hopefully, the future holds better days for our captain. :)

Well, need I say more?? Serie A could be in very big trouble. Thoughts, anyone??

An article from espnstar.com (06 Nov 2003)

Italy's football clubs threatened by EU probe plan.

Rome, (AFP)- Some of Italy's most famous football clubs could go bankrupt if the EU commission rules that a government decree allowing them to spread their debts over 10 years contravenes European law. The issue is believed to be high on the agenda when the Commission meets in Brusslels on November 11th.

EU Competition Commisioner Mario Monti has been considering an investigation into the 'Salva Calcio' (Save Football) amendment which was passed by Italy's lower house of parliament back in February as a lifeline for debt-ridden clubs in the top two divisions.

Several of these are listed on the Milan stock exchange, including European champions AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio and Roma, and have used the amendment to write off huge losses related to the fall in players' values on the transfer market.

Inter has written off player value to the tune of 319 million euros, AC Milan for 242 million euros, Roma for 234 million and Lazio for 213 million. Italian champions Juventus are the ONLY CLUB :):) not to have exploited the decree.

Monti is concerned the amendment is a form of aid from the Italian government that gives the country's clubs an unfair advantage over their european rivals. Under European law, all other companies and businesses are given a standard three-year period over which to spread their debts.

If the 'Salva Calcio' decree is deemed illegal by the Comission, which has the power to influence the national laws of its 15 members, many of Italy's clubs could in theory go out of business.

On Monday, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) held talks with its members to discuss ways of putting its house in order before any action is taken by the EU Commission.

Soaring transfer fees, spiralling player's wages and the deployment of more police at Italy's often violent stadiums have all added to the pressure on clubs such as Inter, where star striker Christian Vieri is paid a whopping 5.2 million euros a year.

Last season Serie A, Italy's first division, suffered operating losses of 948 million Euros, with players' wages eating up 85 per cent of revenue.

This squad is just to test new players.

I'm glad few Juve players have been chosen so we won't risk getting injuries.

Just in case you wondered why the players were not chosen:

Buffon - cos of his usual inflammation of his shoulder. Trap opted to rest him

Zambrotta - Trap decided to rest him cos he's been play a lot of games lately (along with Buffon he's juve's most used player)

Legro - just returned from injury

Camoranesi - has already fixed an appointment for an operation, during this break, in his mouth so not to miss any league games

Del Piero - coe he returned from injury

Tacchinardi - No reason apparently..maybe he just wants to test new players. :)

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi has called for patience after Alex Del Piero’s less than impressive return against Udinese.

The Italian international was back in action on Sunday after a recent calf strain but struggled to make an impact.

Del Piero, who was also celebrating his 29th birthday, even missed a rare penalty when the score was still 0-0.

"Alessandro will have the opportunities to make up for his display," maintained a cool Lippi. "I couldn’t ask for anymore from him after being sidelined for 50 days.

"The penalty miss? It would have been the icing on the cake but these things happen now and again."

Del Piero’s spot kick hit the bar which robbed the ace of having the honour of scoring Juventus’ 4000th League goal.

Del Piero was then replaced by Marco Di Vaio who proved crucial in the game after Udinese took the lead.

Di Vaio netted twice, along with Fabrizio Miccoli and David Trezeguet, as Juve went on to win 4-1 and move clear at the top of the table.

"Fortunately my teammates decided to give me an extra birthday present," commented Del Piero.

Juventus used yesterday’s game against Udinese to make fresh enquiries regarding the availability of Marek Jankulovski.

The Czech ace is highly rated in the Italian game and was recommended to the Turin giants by international teammate Pavel Nedved (pictured).

The 26-year-old left sided midfielder has been linked with the club in the past and a summer move could be likely.

Transfer guru Luciano Moggi is believed to have met with the Udinese hierarchy where a fee is understood to have been requested.

The Friuli Bianconeri are willing to release Jankulovski but their initial asking price is reported to be as high as £7m.

That figure is unlikely to be matched by the Italian champions who are keener on a player plus cash deal.

Jankulovski, who scored a penalty in Sunday’s 4-1 defeat in Turin, is also of interest to Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Parma and Milan.

Paolo Maldini is one of nine Italian players who have been nominated for the prestigious European Footballer of the Year award.

The Italian legend, tipped by many to win the prize, is joined by Buffon, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Nesta, Toldo, Totti, Vieri and Zambrotta.

Fifteen Serie A players in total have made the list of 50 names which is selected by the France Football magazine.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are the most represented club with eight players. They are followed by Juventus who have six and Milan who offer five.

The winner will be selected in December after votes from the magazine’s world-wide base of journalists have been counted.

Speculation suggests that Juventus star Pavel Nedved (pictured) is one of the firm favourites to win the accolade.

He won the Scudetto with Juventus in May, was crucial in their march to the Champions’ League Final and also qualified for Euro 2004 with his country.

Former Bianconeri hero Zinedine Zidane is also a front runner after his success with Real Madrid over the past 12 months.

Maldini is highly recommended in Italy but he may not win enough votes from foreign journalists to get the prize.

"It would be an honour to win but it is not a primary objective of mine," said the defender on Monday. "I’m more interested in the Scudetto and the Intercontinental Cup."

Zambrotta pride at nomination

Gianluca Zambrotta is delighted to have been short-listed for the Golden Ball but concedes he won’t get a vote.

The Juventus star is one of the 50 nominations for the European Footballer of the Year prize but he doesn’t expect to win much backing from the jury.

"I won’t get a vote but I’m not too bothered about that," he maintained. "Just to be part of that group of 50 players is a great honour."

The former Bari star has had an excellent 2003 after he was transformed from a right-sided midfielder to an attacking left-back for club and country.

However, the player has admitted that he was rather shocked to hear the news of his inclusion.

"I was having dinner with Marco Di Vaio when I was told and I had to ask Marco whether I had heard correctly," he added.

"I am certainly surprised by it and it is a very strange feeling to have been included in the list."

of course he deserve.......... ;)

Juventus are chasing Serie C Cesena's exciting youngster Nicola Pozzi.

The 17 year-old has been identified by Juve scouts as one of the best emerging talents in Italy's Serie C and Moggi is being urged to snap up the youngster.

Palermo have expressed an interest in Pozzi in recent days, while Cesena are ready to offer the teenager a five-year contract to stay with the club.

Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini is set for showdown talks with Juventus chief Luciano Moggi.

Currently on-loan at Standard Liege, Carini wants Juve to smooth a deal to Atletico Madrid in January.

Atletico have made the young shot-stopper their priority target for the midseason market and Carini is desperate to join the Spanish outfit.

If Carini cannot be secured, Atletico are considering recalling Sergio Aragones from his loan at Segunda Liga Getafe.

Barcelona outcast Roberto Bonano is also an option, but the No1 target remains an outright deal for Carini.

The game was set to be played on December 23rd during the Serie A's winter break.

11/12/2003. The signs are ominous. Juventus are sweeping all before them and don't look like letting up in their quest for the Scudetto and Champions League double.

Coach Marcello Lippi has been blowing the Bianconeri's trumpet, going to pains to point out just what a strong squad he has at his disposal this season. And why shouldn't he? He has at least two quality players for each position, but also key individuals whom he knows he can rely on to win him a match single handedly.

One such player is Marco Di Vaio. Arguably the club's most outstanding individual this campaign. It's seven Serie A goals and counting for the former Parma striker who now surely commands a starting place week in, week out, as opposed to the one game off, one game on regime (more often than not the former) he was so used to last season.

Di Vaio is one player who has highlighted the fact that Alessandro Del Piero is no longer such a crucial cog in the Bianconeri machine as he once was. A world class player no doubt, capable of turning a game with a moment of divine brilliance. But this season, on the whole, Juve haven't had to reply on individual moments of magic. It's been a real team effort. Sides have visited the Delle Alpi, and returned home with four and five goal beatings. Not necessarily due to moments of sublime skill, but rather brute efficiency (although Pavel Nedved's pass for David Trezeguet's second goal against Real Sociedad should be enough to win him the Ballon d'or on its own!)

And what of Lippi's rotation policy? The former Inter boss, by making often wholesale changes from one game to the next, is making sure that no one runs out of steam, and that everyone keeps going until the last. Lillian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta need a breather? In can come Gianluca Pessotto and Alessandro Birindelli. David Trezeguet is not firing on all cylinders? Fabrizio Miccoli can enter the fray and give a display brimming with energy and enthusiasm.

"This is certainly the most complete squad I have ever coached," noted Lippi after the 4-1 thrashing of Udinese. "I have never had such a quality squad available to me."

Sunday's win highlighted in no uncertain terms why Juventus have won the last two Scudetto's, and why they are red hot favourites to make it three in three - their ability to score late goals, and turn a point into three.

In the 76th minute they were 1-0 down to a Marek Jankulovski (a reported target of Juve) penalty. 13 minutes later they were 4-1 up! How many times over the previous two years have Lippi's side popped up with a late, often undeserved goal to nick three points away from a side who may well have had the better of the match up to that point?

Sheer spirit and determination. Manchester United have it too. That ability to keep on plugging away, until something gives.

Can anything stop the Old Lady? Complacency maybe. Unlikely in a squad of such seasoned pros, but should they build up a what looks an unbridgeable lead over the coming weeks, overconfidence could creep in.

"They are doing very well, if they go on like this in Serie A, it is useless to play," Milan defender Alessandro Nesta told 'La Gazzetta dello Sport'. "However, difficulties may arise sooner or later. Look at Real Madrid for instance: they fell 3-0 in Seville within a quarter of an hour. It may happen and the team may face a crisis."

Just wishful thinking from the former Lazio man?

An injury to national-team goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon would be a crushing blow. Indeed, the former Parma stopper has the ability to go a whole game without doing anything, but make the crucial save when it counts. Always the mark of a fine goalkeeper. David Seaman, in his time at Arsenal, had that particular gift.

Antonio Chimente is a competent reserve keeper, but nowhere near in Buffon's class. Lippi would surely move into the transfer market should Buffon get injured for a substantial length of time. But Juve fans will not even be wanting to comprehend that possibility.

:D

Juventus’ fragility in defence is a result of their attacking tactics according to stopper Nicola Legrottaglie.

The Bianconeri have had the best defensive record in Serie A for the last two seasons but things are not as tight this time around.

"It is true that we are conceding goals this season but we are also significantly scoring a lot more," he stated.

"We are playing some really offensive football right now and that will obviously see us give a little away at the back."

The Italian champions have conceded nine goals in nine games, three times as many as Roma.

However, Milan, Inter and even surprise package Modena have been better defensively so far this season.

Legrottaglie has settled in well since his summer move from Chievo but won’t feature for Italy against Romania on Sunday because of fitness issues.

"I’m feeling a lot better physically," he added. "I had similar problems last season too at Chievo and I’m aware of how my body can react to it.

"That’s why I won’t be able to play against Romania because I’m looking to regain my best form right now."

The Bianconeri have made a fantastic start to the season which has led to some critics predicting a difficult second half of the campaign.

"None of us here are expecting to go through a crisis physically," he added. "That’s also down to the rotation system which the Coach employs."

Juventus chief Luciano Moggi continues to keep tabs on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's situation at Ajax.

Moggi is a big fan of the Swede and is lining up the young striker as a replacement for David Trezeguet in the event the Frenchman refuses to sign a new contract.

Strengthening Moggi's hand is Ibrahimovic's decision to join the stable of agent, Mino Raiola.

Raiola also represents Juve star Pavel Nedved and enjoys a good working relationship with Moggi.

Juventus are threatening English hopes for two of France's best young defenders.

AS Monaco fullback Sebastien Squillaci, 23, and Auxerre centre-half Jean Alain Boumsong, 24, are both on Juve coach Marcello Lippi's wanted list.

Lippi has expressed concern to his board over his aging defensive players, with the likes of Mark Iuliano, Paolo Montero and Ciro Ferrara all in the veteran class.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been chasing Squillaci for over a year and was believed ready to pounce at the end of the season.

The same situation applies for Liverpool and Boumsong. Indeed, the Auxerre defender is on record saying he is ready to move to Anfield on a Bosman in the summer.

Juventus and AC Milan are going head-to-head for Stuttgart's exciting, young striker Kevin Kuranyi.

Schalke 04 have also made their interest known to the 21 year-old's representatives, but don't have the spending power of their Serie A rivals.

Kuranyi admitted this week: "I have attractive offers from two Italian clubs, though I cannot say who they are."

Milan were favourites for the Brazilian-born forward, but Juventus chief Luciano Moggi has stepped up his interest by having the player scouted in recent weeks.

Kuranyi's contract expires in 2005, which is expected to see Stuttgart put the youngster up for sale at the end of the season.

The German international has also admitted an ambition to play in the Premiership, where Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked this season.

11/14/2003. Valencia are considering a January bid for Juventus defender Alessandro Birindelli.

Ches coach Rafa Benitez is keen for an extra defensive reinforcement, and Birindelli, who can play at left and right full-back, may be just the job.

11/14/2003. If Edgar Davids' departure from Juventus remains fairly certain, his destination could be a great surprise.

The 30-year-old has been strongly linked with Roma over the last few months, but the Giallorossi's financial problems have seen this move put into doubt.

According to reports Davids has bought a house in Milan.

In Inter coach Alberto Zaccheroni's 3-4-3 formation he would fit in well as the left-sided midfielder.

The player also has offers from Real Madrid and Chelsea, but a further stay in Italy may well be Davids' first-choice.

t is reported that David Trezeguet and Gianluca Zambrotta will sign new contracts with Juventus next week.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires in 2005 and he insists upon an improvement of his wage terms before putting pen to paper.

Trezeguet is asking for a contract worth just over £1m per season, but Juve seem ready to include image rights taking his total wages to £3.4m.

Should negotiations not reach an agreement before the end of the season, the Euro 2000 star will almost certainly be sold to Arsenal or Chelsea.

Zambrotta has settled into his new role as a left-back and newspapers have repeatedly linked him to Manchester United.

However, Bianconeri Director General Luciano Moggi insists that “He will stay with us for another five years.”

The Italian international’s current contract also expires in 2005 and should be extended during the Christmas break.

Alessandro Birindelli will be out of contract in the summer, but Juventus seem intent on working out a new deal as they recently rejected a bid from Valencia.

excuse me...Graham Lister....are u a Arsenal fan??!!

11/15/2003. A cursory glance at some of the names on Uefa's much-vaunted "short-list" of 50 (yes, 50) nominees for the European Footballer Of The Year begs the question, just how long was the "long list?"

And what were the criteria for making it on to this list? Just being famous, presumably. By its sheer size the short-list is somewhat devalued, bloated by all the usual suspects. In fact I get the impression that after maybe the first half-dozen or, being charitable, dozen names of worthy contenders, the selectors were reduced to adding anyone else they could think of.

How else can you explain the presence, on this list of Europe's alleged elite, of Sylvain Wiltord? A few reasonable games for Les Bleus, OK; but most Gunners fans would be hard-pressed to find a place for Wiltord in a list of their top 50 current Arsenal players.

Those who find the whole idea of such awards and polls distasteful, like a kind of butch beauty contest, would also question the rationale behind including guys like Luis Figo, Giovane Elber, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Del Piero, Patrick Kluivert, Lilian Thuram, Filippo Inzaghi, Jan Koller, Henrik Larsson and even Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos on the basis of their performances during 2003. Too many seem to have drifted onto the list purely on the strength of their past reputations. Maybe there should be a separate award for longevity to satisfy all the nostalgia buffs.

Others of course start with an unfair advantage in the quest for the Golden Ball. David Beckham, for example, is actually nicknamed "Golden Balls" by his shy and retiring wife Victoria. And his every kick, body-swerve, sneeze and knowing smile has received such blanket coverage from a ravenous media that many could be forgiven for believing Beckham has been the ONLY player in Europe all year.

It was inevitable that Ronaldo would feature on the list. His move to Real virtually guaranteed it; and to be fair the soon-to-be-divorced gap-toothed icon has produced some entertaining goalscoring feats despite continuing to eat all the pies. But will we be able to stay awake long enough to applaud if he wins the accolade again? Ronaldo's dentally-challenged compatriot Ronaldinho seems to be on the list largely because of memories of his 2002 World Cup exploits; ditto Sol Campbell, Oliver Kahn, Samuel Eto'o and Nihat Kahveci, perhaps? But it is a measure of how far Rivaldo has fallen from grace since moving to Milan that he doesn't even make the top 50.

Of course, football is all about opinions. It's one of the things that make the game so fascinating, so compelling and so endlessly debatable. Get 50 football fans together and you'll get 50 different views about who's good, who's bad and who's just plain ugly. It's part of the world-wide passion.

I've probably upset any number of people already with my own swipes at some of the hallowed names on this cumbersome and rather dubious list. And so far I haven't even mentioned the merits - or otherwise – of Iker Casillas (Real's attacking style tends to keep the ball away from him but when their defence is under pressure it – and he – usually buckle); Cristian Chivu (great potential, as yet unrealised); Dida and Mutu (same applies); Pauleta, Deco, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Darko Kovacevic, Ludovic Giuly, Michel Salgado, Hatem Trabelsi, Roy Makaay and Michael Owen (good players all, but included just to make up the numbers with no realistic chance of winning this year), etc, etc.

Picking the best player in each position to arrive at a symbolic if largely meaningless "Best European XI" might be an amusing diversion, because in a list of 50 names there is hardly any sensible, rational or objective basis for comparing a goalkeeper with a striker or a centre-back. They each perform specialist functions in what is, after all, a team game.

And it's goals that make the football world go round, so the goalscorers – strikers and attacking midfielders – always start with an edge of glamour that defenders are denied.

So who is the winner likely to be this year? There are 15 Serie A candidates, 10 of them Italian, and the smart money is already on Pavel Nedved of Juve and the Czech Republic. He wouldn't get my vote as I don't like his attitude, though he's certainly a hell of a player. (The same applies to Ruud Van Nistelrooy). If it has to be someone from the Italian League's finest I'd prefer to see Francesco Totti, Alessandro Nesta, or one of the keepers, Buffon or Toldo, get the nod. But assuming it's not a foregone conclusion and other Leagues are in with a shout, Raul is consistently devastating, Ballack tirelessly creative and Henry sheer balletic pace and power.

For purely partisan reasons, I'd give that Golden Ball to Henry. Which probably means it's Nedved's already. And if this article has infuriated the hell out of you, it just goes to show that in football as in life, one man's pizza supreme is another man's mouldy old dough.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Have you read a single interview with Nedved? He's the humblest guy around, and if you watch him on the playing field... he's very unselfish, always looking for passes to his teammates.

You don't like Nedved's attitude, so you'd give it to Toldo? Why don't you go and watch a certain incident with him going up and taking a stranglehold on the neck of HIS OWN PLAYER, and compare this with Nedved's conduct on the pitch.

Also, please tell me, what did Thierry Henry achieve with Arsenal last season? That's a rhetorical question.

I can't believe you said that Totti is better than Nedved when it comes to playing fair. Totti is widely known as one of the biggest cheaters/divers in football.

WTF that u have to come out with "Totti is widely known as one of the biggest cheaters/divers in football" to support your nedved? than WTF that zambrotta is in the list that he dived to gain penalty to help juventus to win the games?

why dun u just simply said "Nedved is perfect" to support your stupid comments! u mean nedved dun dive? he is lucky that he play for juventus that have so many referees blinded on his diving (few but not none). individual has their own eyes to see and have their own opinion, even nedved was seldom caught diving but they can see with their own eyes......

you see totti as the diver that dun deserve the prize coz you look at the negative side of him and ignore his talent, but others can argue that his quality skill should earn him the prize. it depends which side you want to look at.....

u can come out with your own comments to support your favorite player but u dun have to said bad on others to lift him up (bu yao cai di bie ren lai tai gao zi ji)
