Juventus 4 - 2 Siena
Del Piero pen 15, pen 59, 63 (J), Trezeguet 37 (J), Ventola pen 71, 80 (S)
Stadio Delle Alpi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alessandro Del Piero's hat-trick is a confidence booster for the captain as Juventus get back on track.
There were doubts this match would go ahead, as the Stadio Delle Alpi was covered in thick snow throughout the afternoon. The pitch was in such a poor state that the lines on the field had to be re-painted red.
Despite his protests this week, Marco Di Vaio was again benched in favour of Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet.
These teams have already met twice this season in the Coppa Italia and Siena were only eliminated following some very controversial refereeing decisions. Enrico Chiesa returned from injury with a goal in last week's crushing 4-0 win over Modena and the ex-Parma man has a long history of scoring against Juventus.
The conditions were particularly difficult for the two goalkeepers and Gianluigi Buffon flew to palm out a Roberto D'Aversa piledriver.
The snow may have had a hand in the breakthrough moment on 14 minutes, as Daniele Delli Carri clattered into Antonio Conte for a clear penalty. Alessandro Del Piero stepped up and successfully converted with a low drive.
Curiously, this was the first ever spot-kick awarded against Siena in Serie A.
Siena fought back and Buffon had to rush off his line to block a strong Leandro Cufre' solo effort.
Juventus doubled their lead with an acrobatic finish from David Trezeguet. The Frenchman jumped in front of his marker and flicked in a Gianluca Zambrotta cross with the outside of his right foot.
There was bad news for the Bianconeri when Alessandro Birindelli limped off with a muscular problem.
D'Aversa tripped Del Piero in the box and on 58 minutes Del Piero completed his brace of spot-kicks by converting the resulting penalty.
Del Piero wasn't content with only set-piece goals and celebrated his hat-trick by taking full advantage of a wayward Delli Carri clearance.
Siena were also awarded a penalty for Buffon's sliding tackle on Nikola Lazetic and Nicola Ventola converted by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Siena refused to give up and reduced the deficit to 4-2 in the final minutes when Ventola gathered a long ball over the top and tucked it past Buffon at the near post.
There was a very late bid for a comeback when Tore Andre Flo nodded just over the bar moments later.

Superstitious Lippi in no rush Sunday 18 January, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marcello Lippi looks to recent history in order to affirm Juve's Scudetto credentials despite a three-point gap from leaders Roma.
?In the last two years,? explained the tactician, ?we have never been Winter Champions but went on to win the title in both seasons. We certainly hope that trend will continue.?
In fact, in both the last two campaigns Juventus were in fourth place at the halfway stage and currently lie in third behind Roma and Milan.
They will be favourites to pick up the points this afternoon when welcoming Siena to the Stadio Delle Alpi.
?Every week Coaches make the same comments on the difficulties of facing small sides in Serie A,? noted Lippi. ?In the case of Siena, those clichés are absolutely true.?
And Juve should know, as their two Coppa Italia meetings earlier this season were fraught with difficulty and extremely controversial incidents.
There is already a tense atmosphere at the Turin side following an interview with benchwarmer Marco Di Vaio.
?These things matter only to the press and not to the squad,? insisted the Coach. ?I heard all of Di Vaio?s interview and found nothing scandalous in it, so the issues were created by newspaper interpretation.?
The ex-Parma hitman was on target in the Coppa Italia midweek and surprised many when he refused to celebrate, then admitted afterwards that he felt frustrated by the lack of first team football.
David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero are struggling for form, but are expected to start again this afternoon.
?Lilian Thuram and Nicola Legrottaglie have recovered, but they are not fully match fit yet and will play the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Perugia on Wednesday.?

Just some thoughts ...
Freakish weather but still better than rain. Juve players were almost camouflaged. As for the pitch, treacherous conditions. There was almost no 2nd bounce of the ball. Accurate ground passes were impossible. Anybody who could gauge, chip/lob with precision gains an enormous advantage. Cufre was one. Given that it was extremely slippery as well, this is when exactly balance and technique can be fully appreciated. Paddy Agnew (commentator) paid tribute to DP and Nedved in that sense as amongst the select few who could still play decently.
Considering the circumstances, general play was ok. Shaky start in which Siena settled better and end as well. Overall, I wouldn't read too much into 'defensive' problems. The 1st concession was that kind of error that's due once in a while. The 2nd one was encouraged by the 1st and also one of those things that might have been prevented but hardly one which constitutes as a crisis in itself.
Individually,
Buffon 6 - A couple of routine saves and got busier towards the end. Suspect on handling highballs. Made a stupid tackle and conceded the penalty that sparked Siena's late revival. To be fair, the RB supposed to be covering (Tudor, I think) was nowhere to be seen. Could be better.
Birindelli 6 - Energetic outing. Gave his all and performed reasonably well but took a couple of very heavy knocks due to mistimed 50-50s. Had to be stretchered off eventually after a particularly bad one at the right knee. Get well soon!
Ferrara 6.5 - Usual solid self and a no-risk, no-nonsense defending approach from the veteran.
Montero 6.5 - Same as Ferrara. Showing glimpses of the Montero of old (the good ones, that is) and can only get better.
Zambrotta 7 - Better going forward than defending. Doesn't exactly inspire stability at the back defensively but maybe that's something 1-2yrs of experience will rectify. Otherwise, great athleticism and excellent all-round play. Loads of confidence stemming from and helping him do the right things most of the time. Italy will benefit immensely down the flanks from the Juve duo of Camo and Zambro.
Camo 6.5 - As someone whose game is heavily based on short ground passes and dribbling, didn't do too well. What served him well though were quick turns. Worked hard and looks to be shedding that listless form earlier in the season. Could have used better support that's provided by Thuram.
Appiah 6.5 - Clearly uncomfortable playing in such conditions but still managed a notable improvement from his previous outings. Messed up a simple pass occasionally while trying to do too much but generally, has good vision and decent execution from both feet. That's the only thing he has over Davids at the moment and he'll do well to build on that aspect. Keep it up!
Conte 6.5 - Showed his experience but more importantly, his appetite for the game. Most notable contribution was leeching the 1st penalty off an admittedly stupid late challenge by a Siena defender. Like the rest of his fellow-midfielders, high workrate.
Nedved 6.5 - Has seen better days but he has set a very high standard. Gave as good as he took, which is a couple of hard knocks. Shrugged them all off, got up and continued being the feisty little dynamo we're all becoming so fond of. Good sweeping passes of which 1 found DP who proceeded to earn the 2nd penalty. One of the few players who wasn't affected as much by the playing conditions and that alone is worth mentioning.
DP 7.5 - Worked hard, showed great composure, nice footwork and becoming increasingly dangerous. Even without his goals, which were excellently taken, was probably the best player on the pitch. He was everywhere be it initiating attacks or closing down/hunting in packs. At this rate, 2-3 more games and he'll be back to the form which he started the season with.
Trez 7 - I'd like to give special mention to our lone striker. Anybody who criticised him should watch this match. Great lay-offs, moved well, defended even and capped it all with a great goal. The difficulty of it is immense and something most strikers can't even contemplate. He's delivered yet again so bloody give him the raise he deserves.
Tudor 5 (sub for Birindelli) - Looked like a fish out of water. Alright, he came in at a bad time but this really raised the question of whether someone of his characteristics can play in midfield. Yes, the conditions were demanding. They were exacting. They were far from perfect. Unfortunately, they are the sort of tests one needs to pass to qualify as a midfielder.
Tach 5 (sub for Appiah) - In terms of duration on the field, not a fair assessment but in terms of performance, he was practically invisible.

Juventus GM Luciano Moggi has confirmed he expects Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic to sign for Inter Milan.
There had been claims Stankovic had been signed to a pre-contract by Juve, but Moggi admitted last night: "The reports are what they are.
"However, Stankovic will be joining Inter."

It is suggested that Juventus are planning a massive swap deal with Parma, starting with the January arrival of Matteo Ferrari.
Newspapers maintain that Juve are prepared to take full advantage of the financial crisis at the Stadio Tardini.
It?s believed that targets for next season are winger Marco Marchionni, hitman Alberto Gilardino and defender Daniele Bonera.
The offer for this trio of former Under-21 internationals is a hat-trick of Juve?s own stars such as Nicola Legrottaglie, Mauro Camoranesi and Enzo Maresca.
However, the two clubs have immediate problems that must be resolved and the Bianconeri are in search of a reliable young central defender.
The Italian press insists that Director General Luciano Moggi has already made a £2.4m offer for Ferrari to complete a January switch.
Parma are holding firm on their 24-year-old Italian international and expect no less than £4m for the youngster.

Marcello Lippi: ?This is an important victory and a real signal of intent from players who are unfairly criticised if they fail to hit the back of the net for one or two games. It is rather difficult to give a technical comment on a match played under such heavy snowfall. The only negative aspect was injuries to Ciro Ferrara and Alessandro Birindelli.?
Giuseppe Papadopulo: ?We had some good scoring opportunities and were overall rather unlucky. The state of the pitch affected the style of play because both Siena and Juventus tend to play ball to feet. Simone Vergassola has already settled in brilliantly.?

Juventus say they are not planning to sell David Trezeguet and replace him with Lazio?s Bernardo Corradi.
"If Corradi joined Juventus then he would be Trezeguet?s substitute," director general Luciano Moggi told an Italian radio show today.
"The Lazio man is an excellent player but it would be wrong to say that we need him as we already have Trezeguet. They can?t play together."
Speculation has suggested that the former Chievo man was wanted as contract negotiations with the Frenchman continue.
Trez is only tied to the club until 2005 and talks regarding an extension have yet to reach a conclusion.
Yet Moggi insists that the former Monaco man will remain at the Delle Alpi. "I don?t think there are many problems with regard to his new deal," he added.
Moggi also commented on the Edgar Davids situation. He was released to Barca last week as he only had six months left on his Juve deal.
"His cycle with us was over," added the Bianconeri official. "That is why we didn?t offer him a new contract.
"But I?m certain that the Dutchman will do well at Barca and I doubt that he will return to Italy."
Davids is only on loan with the Spaniards with reports stating that a move to Inter or Roma will occur in the summer.

Yep... both are out for a month at least.
this couldn't have come at a better time
I hope this forces Moggi to invest in a defender or 2 before the transfer window closes.

He plays for Udinese, central midfielder, and from what I've seen he's really good. A bit like an upgraded Appiah imo. Do you guys rate him? Should we forget about Blasi and make Muntari Conte's replacement next season.
Tacchi-Enzo-Muntari-Appiah = amazing depth

he plays for parma, is a central midfielder with great intelligence and has some nice passes up his feet. he`s born the 30th april 1978, so he`s kinda young. imo he would be a great successor for conte AND davids.
what do you think???
it`s also kinda realistic, coz we all know that juve likes parma players; hopefully we will buy barone and ferrari :D

There was some mixed news for Juventus today as Alessandro Birindelli was ruled out for two months. Even if Ciro Ferrara should be back soon.
The duo limped out of the Siena win with injuries on Sunday and initial reports suggested they could be out for around a month each.
However, the full-back is set to be sidelined for around eight weeks with a serious thigh problem.
Birindelli had featured heavily in the last few months as cover for Lilian Thuram who has been struggling with fitness.
However, veteran stopper Ferrara (pictured) is set to be on the treatment table for just two weeks after tests today.
The former Napoli man, brought back to the side in a bid to aid their defensive vulnerability, should be back for the crucial Roma game on 8 February.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Ravanelli won?t face the Bianconeri for Perugia in the Italian Cup tomorrow.
The 35-year-old is still unable to feature because the appropriate paperwork regarding his transfer has yet to come through.
He?ll now probably make his debut at the weekend in the League game against Siena.

01/20/2004. BACKGROUND:
Juventus host Perugia at the 'Delle Alpi' of Turin for the second leg match of the Coppa Italia quarter final tie.
The bianconeri start the game with the advantage of having an away 2-1 win which means that Perugia need to win by a two goal margin to go through. On the other, all Juve needs is a draw or even a 1-0 loss to reach the semi-finals.
Marcello Lippi is expected to play all the players that did not play on Sunday against Siena, including Di Vaio, Miccoli and Maresca.
Perugia have nothing to lose from this game so Cosmi will be sure to make his players give their best, also as a morale boost for the team's relegation battle which has seen them obtain just 10 points in the first round of Serie A this season, with no wins but just 10 draws and 7 losses.
Speculation is that Serse Cosmi might be facing the axe, especially following comments made regarding the lack of motivation by his team and also the bad transfer market purchases done by the club.
A loss might mean that Guidolin will be called to take over the reigns of the squad, but with Gaucci you never know what might happen. However, the Old Lady will not give any discounts as they try to conquer their 10th Coppa Italia trophy of their history.
PROBABLE FORMATIONS:
Juventus (4-3-1-2): Chimenti; Thuram, Iuliano, Legrottaglie, Pessotto; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Maresca; Miccoli; Di Vaio, Zalayeta
Perugia (3-5-2): Kalac; Nastos, Di Loreto, Ignoffo; Ze Maria, Tedesco, Obodo, Fusani, Grosso; Margiotta, Bothroyd

Juventus' general manager Luciano Moggi has admitted the club are relaxed about David Trezeguet's position at the club.
Trezeguet is desperate to hold new talks over his contract, but Juve are refusing to be dragged into negotiations until they are ready - as his current deal runs until 2005.
"I don't think there are any big problems for the renewal," said Moggi.
"You [the media] are getting worked about the signing, but he has another a year and a half on his contract. Things will surely be defined.
Trezeguet has insisted he wants to stay in Turin, but his is continually being linked with moves away from the club - with England being touted as his most likely destination.
Arsenal are long term admirers of the French star, but he is also believed to be high on the list of potential targets for Roman Abramovich's Chelsea.
One of Trezeguet's agents - Daniel Fonseca, is reported to have held talks with the Russian oil tycoon about his client's situation.

Juventus will not be adding to their squad during the January transfer window says boss Marcello Lippi.
The Bianconeri have been linked with a move for Parma?s Matteo Ferrari but the tactician has ruled out any new arrivals.
"It is true that Alessandro Birindelli and Ciro Ferrara have picked up injuries but we have enough defenders here," he stated. "We won?t be buying anyone."
Birindelli has been sidelined for two months, while the veteran should return in about 14 days.
Obviously, both will not be available to play in the Coppa Italia tie against Perugia at the Delle Alpi tonight.
The Italian champions are in pole for a place in the semi-finals after last week?s 2-1 win in Umbria.
"We are very motivated," added the tactician. "Especially as we know we still have work to do in order to book our place in the last four.
"I will also use the game to see how players who have just returned from injury ? like Thuram, Tacchinardi and Legrottaglie ? are doing physically."
Lippi is set to field a much changed line up from the one that beat Siena. Both Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet won?t play as they have been rested for the weekend.
Squad: Tacchinardi, Montero, Tudor, Pessotto, Miccoli, Del Piero, Chimenti, Iuliano, Maresca, Camoranesi, Appiah, Zambrotta, Di Vaio, Thuram, Mirante, Legrottaglie, Zalayeta, Boudianski, Bartolucci, Palladino.

thank you Miccoli!!! CNY present for us...heehee.. :D
01/21/2004. At the 'Stadio Delle Alpi' of Turin, in a freezing point temperature and on terrible pitch condition, Juventus won 1-0, thanks to Miccoli, over Perugia who were not able to overturn the 1-2 defeat of the first leg, thus losing the aggregate on a 3-1 score.
Perugia tried to find a goal that could have given them a chance of qualifying but in front of 12 courageous fans who followed them all the way from Umbria, Cosmi's squad was unable to penetrate the bianconeri shirts and relied mostly on shots from the distance.
Juventus went close in the first 20 minutes through Maresca and Di Vaio who both mis-hit the ball from good positions.
However the Old Lady took the lead thanks to an inspired Miccoli who sprinted out on a counter attack and from the edge of the penalty area shot past the helpless Pardini. The latter saved a few minutes later from a well taken Miccoli set-piece.
Perugia's most dangerous man in the first half resulted Manfredini whose long distance efforts kept Chimenti busy and warm.
In the second half Juventus tried to control and administrate the result and match, while Perugia slowly decreased the pressure with the passing of the minutes.
In the end it was a fair result in a quiet match on an extremely cold night in Turin. Juventus will now face Inter in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia, in program next month.

(updates after Juventus victory)
ROME, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Italian champions Juventus will meet Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup after the pair cruised into the last four with wins on Wednesday.
Inter beat Udinese 3-1 in front of just 2,700 fans at the San Siro after their first leg had ended goalless while Juve striker Fabrizio Miccoli gave his team a 1-0 win over Perugia to ensure a 3-1 aggregate victory.
On Thursday, AC Milan and AS Roma will fight it out at Rome's Olympic stadium for the right to meet Lazio with Milan leading 2-1 from last week's first leg.
Despite protests from fans still smarting at their team's 1-0 home defeat to Empoli in Serie A on Sunday, a result which prompted the resignation of club president Massimo Moratti, Inter were unrecognisable from the sterile side that stuttered to a scoreless draw in the first leg in Udine last week.
Dutch winger Andy van der Meyde put the home side ahead in the 17th minute, bending a free kick round Udinese keeper Olivier Renard from a wide position.
Udinese striker Dino Fava restored the balance just after the half hour, heading in Alberto's cross.
Martin Jorgensen nearly gave Udinese the lead, hitting the bar with the last kick of the first half, but six minutes after the restart Inter striker Obafemi Martins ran on to a long pass to fire low into the net.
Eleven minutes later Julio Cruz sealed the result from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the area.
Juve coach Marcello Lippi opted to rest his first choice strikers David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero but the second choice pairing of Marco Di Vaio and former Perugia striker Miccoli once again showed their talents.
It was Miccoli who decided the low-key game, also played in front of a tiny crowd, with a fine solo effort in the 40th minute, bursting down the right flank before firing into the far corner of the net.
Juve took few chances after the break against a Perugia side who are yet to win in Serie A.

It?s Fabrizio Miccoli?s signature we see again on the Juventus-Perugia match in Coppa Italia. This time for the joy of bianconeri fans (last year he scored with Perugia) and thanks to a single beautiful goal that gives Lippi?s team a victory also in the return match joining Inter in the semifinal. ?Yes, after scoring last year even if I was already Juventus property I had to repeat myself tonight. Exultation? No, I only went to thank the fans that had supported me through the whole match and also because my parents and wife were in the stands, but I certainly haven?t forgotten the splendid year passed in Perugia. I?m very happy about my performance today.

Parma?s Manuele Blasi could return to Juventus this month if he has his doping ban cut on appeal.
The 23-year-old (pictured) has been suspended until April 18 after he tested positive for nandrolone earlier this term.
Blasi?s lawyers have started work on an appeal and Juventus are hoping that his six-month sentence will be reduced.
The midfielder, on loan at the Tardini from Juve, should go up in front of the appeal court before the end of the month.
That would allow him to move in the January transfer window if his ban is cut by a couple of months.
Juve want Blasi back at Coach Marcello Lippi?s disposal after they waved goodbye to Edgar Davids last week.
The Dutchman, who only had six months left on his contract, has joined Barcelona on loan for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, Juve and Milan are interested in Reggina?s Giandomenico Mesto. The 21-year-old is a midfielder.
Perugia are still being linked with a host of new players. Veteran stoppers Aldair and Jose Antonio Chamot are wanted.
While talks with Chievo over Under-21 international striker Giuseppe Sculli continue.
The Umbrian club want to offer Massimo Margiotta, who is currently being forced to train with the youth team, as part of a swap but the player is refusing to leave Perugia.

a great player....
Lilian Thuram has revealed that he hopes to end his playing days with Italian giants Juventus.
The Frenchman is tied to the Delle Alpi outfit until the summer of 2006 when he intends to hang up his boots.
"I won?t leave Juventus until my contract expires," Thuram told the Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo. "I?d love to end my career wearing the Bianconeri jersey."
Thuram, who recently turned 32, has been at Juventus for two seasons now after his £23m move from Parma.
"I?ve been thinking about retiring for some time but I?ll make a final decision on whether to play on when my contract expires," he added.
When asked what his post playing days could have in store for him, he seemed to rule out remaining in the football world.
"I?ve already considered a few things but I don?t think I?ll stay in football," he added. "This sport has given me many things but I would prefer a complete change."

yes yes yes!! :)
David Trezeguet is expected to extend his contract with Juventus according to reports. Alessio Tacchinardi is set to do the same.
Trezeguet?s future in Turin has been a constant source of speculation for months as talks over a new agreement failed to get off the ground.
His current deal expires in 2005 and his request for a pay rise was believed to be a major stumbling block.
However, it is being suggested today that a compromise will be reached that will see the striker stay with the club until 2008.
Trezeguet, a target for Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona, is set to see his £1m a year salary increased to £1.7m, with additional bonus-related payments.
Meanwhile, teammate Tacchinardi is also believed to be close to prolonging his Juventus career.
He was signed by the Stadio Delle Alpi side in 1994 as a 20-year-old and has been a loyal servant ever since.
His present contract expires in 2005 but the Bianconeri are ready to offer him a new one until 2009.
That would probably see the former Atalanta player end his career with the club given the fact that he will be 34 by then.

Typical 'Coppa' match with not many chances created and a slow pace. Even though the pitch conditions could be blamed for that, but we realy killed-off the match knowing that we could advance even with a 0-1 defeat.
It's good to see Miccoli having yet another good performance, he seems ready to step in whenever needed. His family were in the stands and that may have given him extra motivation to do well too. Chimenti was another player who impressed me with good saves. Maresca and Di Vaio were a bit below average though.
Looking at the future, this edition of the Coppa could be interesting. Inter-Juve and possibly Milan-Lazio in the semifinal is mouth-watering.
I believe Inter and Lazio will pay more attention to this competition and might even field their strongest lineups. But in the end, Milan-Juve would be a good bet for the final.

Lippi smiles?twice
22 01 2004
Marcello Lippi (La Presse)
He had asked for two things the day before the match, and he got both of them. Marcello Lippi can infact smile following tonight?s victory, but most of all he can be pleased with the condition of the group, in particular the defenders, who have been recovering from injuries: ?Yes, considering Birindelli?s and Ferrara?s injuries last Sunday I must say Iuliano, Legrottaglie and Thuram all proved to be recovering well tonight. Now we must look ahead at the two matches with Inter. Surely the semifinals including Roma Milan will be nice shows for the spectators.?

Empoli-Juventus
Stadio Castellani
Empoli hit the headlines last week by beating Inter at the San Siro and have the chance to take another prestigious scalp by welcoming reigning champions Juventus.
The Tuscans remain in the relegation zone despite that historic victory, but their morale has certainly been boosted. Coach Attilio Perotti maintains that result was a turning point in their campaign and it cannot be denied that in recent weeks their overall performances have been improving with two wins on the trot. Antonio Di Natale is slowly rediscovering the form that saw him earn international caps last year, while Jorge Vargas has helped strengthen the defence.
However, Juventus have constructed their Scudetto success on grinding out results against the smaller sides and will be confident of taking all three points. Alessandro Del Piero is back on form after his hat-trick against Siena, even if two of those goals were penalties, while David Trezeguet was also on target in that 4-2 win.
Their real weakness this season has been the defence, so the news that Alessandro Birindelli and Ciro Ferrara suffered muscular injuries will be a terrible blow. Lilian Thuram is now fit enough to start the match alongside Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero, but Nicola Legrottaglie and Alessio Tacchinardi continue to struggle for match fitness.
Empoli (probable): Bucci; Belleri, Cribari, Vargas, Lucchini; Grella, Ficini; Busce, Vannucchi, Di Natale; Rocchi
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Iuliano, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Conte, Appiah; Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet

This week we lock horns with Empoli in a late Sunday evening away from the freezing Delle Alpi, and in Empoli?s Carlo Castellani Stadium.
Mind you, it was Empoli?s earthquake last week that hit Inter hard and caused the resignation of Moratti from the presidency of the club. The Tuscans? morale should be sky high and more is expected from their demanding fans at their own home.
Empoli play with the 4-2-3-1 formation with Rocchi spearheading the attack. He would be supported by Busce, Vannucchi, and Di Natale who failed to reproduce last season?s impressive performance due to numerous injuries. Even though they have a good looking attack, their defensive record is appalling as 30 goals where scored against them, 10 of which at home.
On the other hand, we will be playing in our favourite time of the year (post Christmas) and are already looking good and comfortable in winning matches.
Lippi doesn?t seem content on rushing Legrottaglie and Tacchi back to the team as they slowly regain their top fitness levels. So I guess Iuliano/Tudor will take Legro?s place in central defence to partner Montero, as Ferrara is definitely out. While Conte takes Tacchi?s place in midfield after his good performances in Serie A. This ?resting? luxury couldn?t be given to Thuram though, as his direct replacement, Birindelli, got injured himself and thus Thuram will have to be rushed back to patrol the right flank and help out the defenders. The ever consistent Zambro should also be back after Pessotto played on the left against Perugia in the Coppa.
Last time we played Empoli away, we won 2-0 with a brace from capitano Alex. A repeat wouldn?t be a surprise as Alex is in great shape with a sky high confidence after last week?s hatrick. Empoli's defence will surely have a difficult time limiting him. Trezeguet is expected to partner Alex after resting out the Coppa match and news of him extending his contract would certainly be good news for the Juve camp and will hopefully give him a confidence boost in this match.
Expect a good performance from Alex and Camo, with both scoring in a 2-0 win.

Alessandro Del Piero remembers Juve President Gianni Agnelli a year on from his death and pledges to win the Scudetto in his memory.
?I and the whole team miss him terribly,? admitted the captain, ?but we hope that soon we can give him the third star on the Juventus shirt.?
A golden star is awarded for every ten Italian titles won and currently the Bianconeri are the only side with two.
Honorary President Agnelli passed away in January 2003 and he was unable to celebrate their 27th Scudetto.
?When we went to pay our respects at the funeral service, it seemed as if the King of Italy had died.?
Del Piero was nicknamed ?Pinturicchio? by the FIAT owner and recalls their time together at the training ground.
?To be called to one side for a personal chat with him was a great honour,? explains the Italian international.
?Agnelli was a real connoisseur of football and I was always very touched and grateful to be given a new nickname by him.?
Meanwhile, Juventus travel to Empoli for Sunday?s match and it?s reported there will be changes to the tactical set-up.
Fabrizio Miccoli?s fine goal in the Coppa Italia win over Perugia midweek could earn him a spot in the starting eleven.
This would mean leaving David Trezeguet as lone striker with backing from Miccoli, Del Piero and Pavel Nedved in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Marcello Lippi's men take on giant killers Empoli this evening and the Coach hopes David Trezeguet can join the list of long-standing Juve stars.
?We have not changed as many players over the years as Roma and Milan,? explained Lippi, ?because our veterans still have a real hunger for success.?
The Scudetto now seems to be a three-horse race and January is traditionally when the Bianconeri hit top gear.
However, their trip to Empoli is given another layer following their shock 1-0 win over Inter last week.
?The Tuscans are on fine form and have rediscovered their enthusiasm with two consecutive victories. The return of Igli Vannucchi is also crucial to get their system working again.?
Juve hammered them 5-1 at the Delle Alpi in Week 1, but Lippi denies they will bring back that 4-2-3-1 system with Fabrizio Miccoli out wide.
?We haven?t used that tactic for many weeks now,? explained the Coach, ? and won?t start again now. All we need is concentration.?
Enzo Maresca is out with an injury, but the attention is turned to David Trezeguet following a breakthrough in contract renegotiations.
?When he does put pen to paper on a new deal that will undoubtedly be a big psychological boost for David.?
?However, he always knew the club was putting its faith in his future, but with everything signed and sealed he will be able to play in a more relaxed state of mind.?
The Frenchman is not the only player involved in contract extension talks, as the ?Old Guard? will carry on at the Delle Alpi.
?Players like Alessandro Del Piero, Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved are world class stars and it is normal for a club to try and keep them for as long as possible.?
?But there are others who may not have quite as much quality, such as Antonio Conte and Ciro Ferrara, who give so much more to a side in terms of charisma, leadership and experience. These men represent for us what Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta are for Milan.?
Lippi also commented on the year that has passed since the death of Honorary Juventus President Gianni Agnelli.
?He was a constant presence and we all miss him very much, but in a sense he never left as we all keep his wonderful outlook on life and football in our hearts.?
Meanwhile, Brazilian club Flamengo have confirmed they are in advanced negotiations with Juve's young Uruguayan Ruben Olivera.

What a game! Six goals and only two players on the scoresheet! Today the goals conceded were due to the fact that Rocchi was open all of the damn time! Where were Iuliano and Montero? Surely one of the two should've been marking that guy!
Thuram isn't near the top of his game, and nearly cost us by dribbling in the central defence. Zambrotta was ok with some nice runs, while Conte and Tacchinardi distributed the ball pretty well but couldn't match Grella and co for hustle and workrate.
Camoranesi sucked imo, while Nedved didn't do very much in the first half. Del Piero excelled in patches with a few nice touches here and there and a superb aerial ball for Trezeguet, but never really threatened Luca Bucci's goal, though to be fair the service to him wasn't very good. I would've subbed Camo for Miccoli and moved Alex out onto the left, where Di Vaio didn't offer anything.
Trezeguet worked harder than usual today and it paid off as he scored a nice hat-trick. The calmness and coolness he showed on his second and third goals was impressive, so hats off to him.
Miccoli made an immediate impact with an excellent assist and a few testing free kicks. Overall, the performance could've been alot better, and the result very disappointing as this was a great chance to close in on Roma.

Empoli 3 - 3 Juventus
Rocchi 21, 55, 62 (E), Trezeguet 30, 50, 75 (J)
Stadio Castellani
David Trezeguet and Tommaso Rocchi hat-tricks seal a six-goal thriller as Empoli prevent Juve closing in on the leaders.
Empoli were hoping to take another prestigious scalp seven days after beating Inter at the San Siro, while Juventus had the opportunity to close the gap to leaders Roma.
Alessandro Del Piero's confidence is back following his hat-trick and within a minute the captain found Pavel Nedved with an intelligent backheel.
There was controversy soon after when Antonio Di Natale was halted for an offside decision, but replays suggest Mark Iuliano was keeping him level.
The Italian international was very lively to begin with and skipped past Iuliano before firing inches wide of the far post.
Soon after Gianluigi Buffon only parried a Vincenzo Grella volley into the path of Jorge Vargas, but the defender was offside.
David Trezeguet had Juve's first shot on goal after almost 20 minutes, but it was well saved by Luca Bucci.
However, Empoli took a deserved lead soon after through Tommaso Rocchi - the striker who also doomed Inter last week. Rocchi was at full stretch to toe-poke an Igli Vannucchi cross past Buffon.
Juve hit back immediately and Bucci twice flew to parry a Del Piero free kick and Nedved's follow-up.
The equaliser came on the half-hour mark when a corner kick took several deflections before Trezeguet was finally able to scramble it over the line from close range.
The Bianconeri began to take control and former Torino goalkeeper Bucci performed another tricky save on Del Piero's set-piece.
But Di Natale continued to give real problems to veteran central defenders Paolo Montero and Mark Iuliano.
It was a fiery encounter in the second half and straight out of the blocks Bucci pushed a powerful Alessio Tacchinardi strike over the bar.
Trezeguet bagged his second of the night with another chaotic move. Tacchinardi's shot ricocheted into the Frenchman's path and he evaded Bucci with his right foot before turning in with his left.
However, just five minutes later Rocchi had struck for a second time to make it 2-2. Di Natale scooped a floating cross over the Juve defence for Rocchi to nod in at the back post.
Bucci was again in the thick of the action by parrying a Del Piero effort into the path of Trezeguet, but the 'keeper was able to recover.
It was a spectacular encounter and soon after Empoli turned it around completely with a stunning strike. Rocchi completed his hat-trick with a memorable volley on Antonio Busce's cross.
Marcello Lippi threw on Fabrizio Miccoli for the final push and he blasted a free kick just over the frame of the goal.
It was a game of three's and with 15 minutes left on the clock David Trezeguet completed his hat-trick for Juventus. Miccoli's sweeping cross found the Frenchman unmarked to nod in the latest equaliser.
It remained open until the final whistle and in stoppage time Bucci tipped a long range Miccoli free kick over the bar.
Empoli: Bucci; Cupi, Vargas, Cribari, Lucchini (Pratali 73); Grella, Ficini; Buscé, Vannucchi (Zanetti 69), Di Natale; Rocchi (Tavano 88)
Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Montero, Iuliano (Pessotto 69), Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Di Vaio 75), Tacchinardi, Conte, Nedved; Del Piero (Miccoli 69), Trezeguet

sure anot??!!...defence need to be improved lah..
Juventus have conceded 21 goals in 18 games, but Marcello Lippi insists they won?t bring in new defenders.
?When a team scores a lot of goals then that is down to the overall attitude of the side,? maintained the Bianconeri boss. ?The same applies to the defence.?
Tonight?s 3-3 draw at Empoli prevented the reigning Champions closing the gap on Roma and Milan and once again highlighted their frailties at the back.
?I can?t remember the last time we let in so many goals with such alarming regularity,? admitted Lippi. ?In previous years we almost always had the strongest defence in Serie A and this is a worrying trend that needs to be worked on.?
The problems suffered against Empoli will fuel reports that Juve are making a January bid for Parma captain Matteo Ferrari.
?We already have nine defenders at our disposal. There will be no new signings this month because we quite simply do not need them.?
David Trezeguet?s hat-trick allowed the Turin side to recover a point from this match and boosted his confidence following some poor form.
?Trezeguet is ready to sign his contract extension and that allows him to play with a more relaxed state of mind,? concluded Lippi. ?He is an important player for us and an excellent goal scorer.?
Empoli?s hero of the hour is Tommaso Rocchi, who bagged a hat-trick tonight and the winner at Inter last Sunday.
?It isn?t easy to get three goals past a side like Juventus,? commented the striker. ?It?s a wonderful time for me as this week I also extended my contract with the club.?
Rocchi is not in fact a centre-forward by trade, but has adapted to this role following injuries and transfer problems.
?I have a lot left to prove,? he added, ?but I am happy that we showed everyone Empoli are a team to be reckoned with. I only score so many because my teammates provide the best possible support.?
This result allows the Tuscans to clamber free of the drop zone, although they would still be headed for a play-off with the sixth-placed Serie B side.

The chances of seeing Matteo Ferrari join Juve in January are remote according to Parma boss Cesare Prandelli.
Rumours claimed that the Italian champions could make a move for the stopper but Prandelli has put on the brakes.
"It?s normal that clubs are interested in a great defender like Ferrari," said the Gialloblu tactician.
"I?ve spoken with my club though and they?ve given me certain guarantees. We will end the season with the squad I have now so Ferrari will stay with us."
One player that may be about to leave Juventus soon is Ruben Olivera. The midfielder is wanted by Flamengo.
"I?ve spoken with the player and he is open to the move," said Flamengo director general Leo Junior. "He wants to play for us."
It?s unclear at this stage whether Juventus are willing to release the highly rated Uruguayan youngster.
Meanwhile, reports claim that Benfica starlet Tiago Mendes has moved closer to a summer switch to Juve.
The 22-year-old?s contract negotiations with the Portuguese side have allegedly stalled over financial matters.
That has increased speculation that the midfielder could be targeted by Juve as a replacement for the now departed Edgar Davids. He left for Barca earlier this month.

27-01-2004, 12:55 AM
Juventus say they are confident that star striker David Trezeguet will sign an extension to his current contract.
Reports last week claimed that a deal was close after director general Luciano Moggi met with Trezeguet?s agent, his father Jorge, to start talks.
"There are no problems," said the transfer guru. "It was a friendly meeting in which we laid the foundations so that David can stay here for many years to come."
It?s believed that Trezeguet, whose current deal ends in 2005, is set to sign until 2008 even if pen has yet to be put to paper.
"It is a delicate contract," added Moggi. "Trezeguet is a great player but we are still ironing out some details."
The former Monaco man had stated earlier this month that he was keen to sort out his future after he witnessed what happened to Edgar Davids recently.
"This won?t be another Davids situation," maintained Moggi. "We will close the deal soon. Trezeguet isn?t and won?t be a problem."
Davids, who only had six months left on his contract, was dropped and then released to Barcelona after he failed to agree terms with Juventus over a new deal.
Trezeguet, a target for Chelsea, Arsenal and Barca, is set to see his £1m a year salary increased to £1.7m, with additional bonus-related payments.
His form seems to have also improved with this significant step over his future as he netted a hat-trick against Empoli yesterday.

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi has jumped to the defence of his side for conceding 21 goals in 18 games.
The Bianconeri rearguard has been put on trial by the media but the tactician refuses to single out any culprits.
"We have let in a lot of goals but it hasn?t stopped our progress in the table," said the former Napoli Coach.
"I do admit that we are perhaps less determined and less focused at the back but don?t go looking for individuals to blame.
"It is down to the general conduct of the whole side and this needs to be corrected. We shouldn?t talk about the defence but our defensive approach."
Lippi believes that the amount of goals scored against them is directly linked with their new attacking mentality that has seen them net 41 goals in 18 games.
"It?s a season where we are evidently more focused when going forward," he added. "It?s not something that has affected us even if it is something for us to think about."
Speculation suggests that Juventus could look to remedy the problem by signing a defender, possibly Parma?s Matteo Ferrari, over the next week.
"If the club ask me whether I want a new player then I would say no," he continued. "I don?t want a new defender.
"I already have enough. I just need my players to give their very best. I?m convinced we just need to get our heads right."

French star David Trezeguet will earn over £4 million-a-year from his new contract at Juventus.
With only minor details to be finalised, Trezeguet is on the verge of penning a deal that will keep him at Juve until 2008. The £16 million contract also includes healthy bonuses for goals and success and is a massive leap from his current £1 million salary.
Real Madrid and Chelsea are still circling, with Italian press reports yesterday suggesting Real president Florentino Perez had approached Juve this month with a £25 million offer for the French international.

uve: We are in pretty good shape after the match with Empoli, even though it ended 3-3. The frontline looks awesome, with both Trezeguet and Del Piero in great form after their recent hat-tricks. The defence, however, looks worse than ever, with 3 goals conceded against Empoli and now 21 in total. If things continue like this Juve will struggle in every game and could end the season without their 28th Lo Scudetto. Let's hope Lippi does something about it.
Chievo: Even though their season hasn't gone their way, their recent win against Brescia showed they are no pushover. With one goal down, they hit back and eventually won 3-1. It seems they are gaining back their confidence from last season so look out Juve.
My prediction: It will be a pretty balanced match but we should prove to hard for Chievo and win 2-1. Hopefully Del Piero will score from a free-kick as he has not done that in some time now :D

Let's see who the 9 defenders are:
Birindelli: injured fro 2 months and "good" at best, average most of the time
Ferrara - 37 years old, slow, and injury prone, not to mention that he's out for two weeks
Fresi - very injury prone, has played a total of 9 games for Juventus, most of them in non important Coppa matches and as a sub, all of them last year.
Pessotto - 34 years old, never recovered from a serious injury in 2002, has become average at best.
Thuram - 32 years old, bad match fitness, is not as reliable as in the past, insignificant in offence.
Tudor - very good, tall, strong, excellent header in both defense and offense, but always injured, and currently not completely match fit.
Legrottaglie - the same as Tudor, but is more unreliable, tends to make misstakes under pressure, and is currently out of form.
Now, for the creme of our defence:
Montero - 33 years old, slow, short (for a defender - he's 179 cms), error prone, completely unreliable.
Iuliano - CMI. No need to say more.
So, we have 3 proper, good defenders, one is completely out of form, the other unfit and old, and the third always injured.
Now, we dont need any new defenders you say?

Young Czech player Limbersky has been signed by Modena. :(
Kaka reckons that Milan are just as good as Brazil, and they play
the same way.
Ciro Ferrara could be with the Juventus squad for the 8th of Feb
game against Roma. :)
Juve enquired about Monaco's defender Squillaci and were
quoted 6 mils.
If Lucio lowers his wage demands a deal could be reached with
Juve.
Real Madrid are said to be 412,6 mils in debt, despite selling the
Ciudad Deportiva.

Milan attacking minded? Have you calculated how many 1-0 games they have this season? Ancelotti is one of the most conservative minded coach in Italy but he should count himself lucky to have so many talented players who are able to salvage his job :pissed:
IMO Lazio are the most attacking minded team in Serie A. Definitely not Milan :sarcastic
Roma's defence use to be our strongest point but not after so many injuries, particularly Chivu & Zebina. Our thin squad doesn't have enough cover and that caused us 2 points taken away by Udinese

Alessandro Del Piero insists that hard work is all that is needed for Juventus to close the gap on the Serie A leaders.
?We are halfway through the season and had best start rolling up our sleeves,? commented the Bianconeri captain on his official website.
Many critics have lambasted the team after the 3-3 draw at relegation battlers Empoli, particularly as it highlighted their worst defensive record in 40 years.
?That result did not make our heads drop. If anything it provides us with more motivation to do well and work out our problems as soon as possible. There is much work to be done.?
As leaders Roma were also held to a draw, the gap remains unchanged, but Milan could zoom out in front if they beat Siena on Wednesday.
However, it is the defensive record that has caught all the headlines this weekend with Juve conceding 21 goals in 18 games.
?I have let in 13 goals more than Milan goalkeeper Dida,? sighed Italian Number 1 Gigi Buffon. ?It is a miracle that we are in third place considering these statistics.?
Nonetheless, Marcello Lippi and the club continue to maintain that no new defenders will be signed during the January transfer window.
There is hope that 37-year-old Ciro Ferrara will recover from an injury in time to face Roma in the big top of the table clash next weekend.

Oddo is Moggi's No1 target with negotiations having been held yesterday in Rome.
Lazio are reluctant to lose the Italian international, but its reported Juve could sweeten the deal by offering San Lorenzo defender Gonzalo Rodriguez in exchange.

01/28/2004. AS Roma president Franco Sensi has once again spoken out to the media, attacking rival Scudetto contenders AC Milan and Juventus.
The Capital club president, who has been in charge of the Giallorossi since 1993, claimed that both Juventus and Milan are aiding Roma's supposed financial problems.
"We are in delay of three months in regard to player wages, but soon we will arrange all."
"Unfortunately the liabilities are accumulated during my disease because certain parties have been useful for the situation", the Roma chief blasted.
He also added, "Milan and Juventus are the anomaly of Italian Football."
This isn't the first time the 77 year old has attacked these two clubs, with Sensi being fined and reprimanded countless times in the past for simular outbursts.
The Roma chief also spoke about his young forward Antonio Cassano and his thoughts on retirement from his post as president.
"Cassano is only a boy, and we must let him be. We have to learn to take the good with the bad," said Sensi.
"In regards to my retirement, I will first strengthen the team in order to leave the club in the best position possible."
"Then when I decide that my health is no longer in order to continue I will make an announcement."

Juventus stopper Nicola Legrottaglie believes the time has arrived to silence his critics once and for all.
The international joined the Turin giants from Chievo last summer but he?s struggled to settle at the Delle Alpi.
"I?ve had my problems with injury since I signed but I feel good now and those difficulties are behind me," he said.
The Italian champions have struggled defensively so far this term having conceded 21 goals in 18 League games.
Critics have pointed the finger at a number of individuals but Legrottaglie?s quality in particular has been put under the microscope.
"I know that Coach Marcello Lippi has faith in me and I?m obviously thankful for that," added the former Bari player.
"It is now time to show everybody what I am really capable of doing on the field of play."
However, Juventus are still being associated with a possible move for a new defender in the next few days.
Parma?s Matteo Ferrari was a rumoured target but the Old Lady are today being linked with Alex.
The Brazilian, only 21, is currently with Santos but is also of interest to Milan, Inter and Real Madrid.

Juventus won?t be bringing in any new faces over the next few days according to transfer guru Luciano Moggi.
The Italian champions have been associated with a number of names - given their defensive record this term ? but the club?s director general has denied anyone will be signed.
"From today until January 31, we will not be adding to the squad as we are convinced that we are competitive enough to win everything this term," he stated.
Meanwhile, Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon (pictured) maintains there is no defensive crisis despite conceding 21 goals in just 18 games.
"We shouldn?t be too concerned with the fact that we are letting in more goals than we have done in the past," he told a radio show on Wednesday.
"I think the fact that we have been conceding so many is purely down to a drop in concentration and nothing else."
Buffon, who is celebrating his 26th birthday today, was also asked whether he believed he is the best ?keeper in the world.
"I don?t know," he responded. "I think there are a few players out there who are on my level. They are Dida at Milan, Stuttgart?s Hildebrand and Rennes ?keeper Petr Cech."
The latter will join Chelsea in the summer after they agreed terms with his club and the player earlier this month.

Juventus have reportedly held talks with Lazio in the hope of signing Jaap Stam and Dejan Stankovic.
Juve officials Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo are believed to have met with Lazio?s Ugo Longo and Giuseppe De Mita in a Rome hotel on Tuesday.
Whispers claim that the Italian champions offered a player plus cash deal in order to net the duo in the summer.
A fee of £8m has been tabled, part of which will be paid immediately, with Enzo Maresca and Jimenez - currently at Ternana - included in the offer.
Stam (pictured) has been wanted by Juve for some time now, even if they will face stiff opposition from Milan and Inter.
As for Stankovic, it was believed that Juve had given up on the chase to sign him with the midfielder seemingly set to join Inter.
Meanwhile, Inter are said to be close to signing David Pizarro from Udinese.
The Bianconeri want around £6m plus the loan of Nicola Beati. The Milan giants are offering just £4m.

Lazio have turned down a second bid from Juventus for Dejan Stankovic and Jaap Stam.
Powerbrokers from both clubs met on Tuesday and Juve tabled an £8 million offer for the pair, also including Fabrizio Miccoli in the deal. Juve were also happy for both players to stay with Lazio until the end of the season.
But the Rome club turned the offer down flat. Lazio coach Roberto Mancini, however, has told Juve chief Luciano Moggi that a deal could be struck if he included Enzo Maresca and Luis Jimenez in a cash bid.
Inter Milan remain favourites to land Stankovic, who is believed to favour them over Juve.
However, all three clubs are waiting on the findings of an investigation by Serie A authorities into Juve chief Luciano Moggi's claims that he secured Stankovic to a pre-contract agreement before January.

Juventus vs Chievo Preview
LIVE SCV Ch 22, 1 Feb, Sun @ 09:55pm
Stadio Delle Alpi
---------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus are dealing with their worst defensive record in four decades and must try to solve those issues if they are to challenge Milan and Roma for the title.
Not since the 1960’s have the Bianconeri conceded 21 goals in their first 18 games and the 3-3 draw at Empoli was a lost opportunity to close in on the leaders. They still hold firm in third place thanks to a prolific strike force with 41 goals scored, but the side is increasingly reliant on the performances of individuals.
Alessandro Del Piero’s hat-trick proved decisive against Siena and last week David Trezeguet followed with his own triple at Empoli. Marcello Lippi maintains the issue lies with the team attitude, but the central defensive pairing of Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero is distinctly lacking in pace. Alessandro Birindelli, Ciro Ferrara and Enzo Maresca remain sidelined with injury, while summer signing Nicola Legrottaglie is not 100 per cent fit.
Chievo are not on particularly good form either right now, although their 3-1 win over Brescia showed signs of improvement. Giuseppe Sculli finally scored his first goal of the season in that game and could be granted a place in the starting eleven against the club that still owns his contract. There must be a reshuffle in midfield following the one-match ban to Italian international Simone Perrotta, so Stefano Morrone steps into the breach.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Iuliano, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Conte, Appiah; Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet
Chievo (probable): Marchegiani; Moro, Barzagli, D’Anna, Lanna; Luciano, Morrone, Zanchetta, Santana; Cossato, Sculli

The agent of Olympique Marseille defender Danny van Buyten has revealed Juventus have made an approach.
The Belgium international is the subject of a bid from Manchester City, but Christophe Henrotay told Calciomercato.com, "As far as his possible move to Manchester City today, at the moment I do not know anything.
"I can say that it is very difficult that he arrives in Italy in June, as in this period we have not had any offers for Van Buyten. Only Juve have been interested in the past."

Lazio player Massimo Oddo has pledged his future to the club despite constant speculation suggesting he will be sold.
The Italian international has been continually linked with a transfer to Juventus but the player insists his future is in Rome.
"I?m really happy and feel settled at Lazio," he said. "What shirt will I be wearing next season? The Biancocelesti one.
"The squad that we have here consists of a fantastic group of players and I intend to stay here for some time to come."
Oddo?s statement has surprised some given the fact that he is by no means guaranteed a first team shirt.
Boss Roberto Mancini has left him out of the side at times by deciding to field Jaap Stam in the right back role.
The 28-year-old is currently in his second season with Lazio following two fine years with Verona.
Oddo is also a regular squad member of the Italian national side and is set to be part of the Euro 2004 campaign.

Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi will put pen to paper on a new contract with the Italian giants.
The international, who is currently tied to the side until 2005, has agreed to stay with the outfit until 2008.
The player?s agent, Alessandro Moggi, met with Juve?s Antonio Giraudo yesterday where an understanding was reached.
It is believed that the 29-year-old will accept a cut in salary in return for a new deal with the Delle Alpi side.
Tacchinardi will now earn around £1.2m a year instead of the £1.4m he was previously netting. Even if his salary may increase with additional bonus-related payments.
The former Atalanta player was signed in 1994 as a 20-year-old and has been a loyal servant ever since.

wah...can't belif this news...
Italian champions Juventus have allowed three of their squad players to join new clubs on loan for the rest of the season.
Youth team star Ruben Olivera has joined Atletico Madrid after failing to break into Marcello Lippi?s plans.
The Uruguayan international, a talented midfielder, has agreed a deal with the Spanish side until 30 June 2004.
Meanwhile, Perugia have struck a deal with the Bianconeri in order to get their hands on Salvatore Fresi and Marcelo Zalayeta.
Fresi, a defender, was wanted by a host of clubs but Perugia have swooped. While Zalayeta joins due to the stiff striking competition from Trezeguet, Del Piero, Miccoli and Di Vaio.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that Juventus will add to their squad before tomorrow?s transfer deadline.
Parma midfielder Manuele Blasi (pictured) is set to be recalled from his loan period to replace the departed Edgar Davids.
However, he won?t be available to play immediately as he is currently banned until April after failing a dope test.
Even if the former Perugia man is appealing in an attempt to get his six-month suspension reduced.
In other transfers, Samp have announced the capture of Antonio Floro Flores from Napoli. He joins on loan.
Ancona have sold Davide Carrus to Fiorentina in return for Viola midfielder Luis Bujia Helguera.
Parma have netted themselves striker Daniele Degano from Ancona. Inter defender Potenza, who was on loan at Ancona, is also on his way to the Tardini.
Reggina have signed Giovanni Morabito from Genoa.

Chievo winger Mario Alberto Santana has stated that he would find it impossible to reject a move to Juventus.
The Brazilian has been linked with a switch to the Italian giants who he will come up against in Week 19 tomorrow.
"If Juve did call me then I couldn?t turn them down," said the 22-year-old. "However, I wouldn?t want to join them immediately.
"I would prefer to sign for them once I have confirmed my quality as it would be tough for me to play regularly amongst such illustrious champions.
"Therefore staying another year at Chievo would be useful for me to learn more things in order to step up to the next level."
The winger has impressed in the top flight this term after Chievo convinced Serie B side Palermo to loan them the South American.
Santana moved to Italy in January 2002 when he joined Venezia. However, he left for Sicily six months later after playing just four times for the Laguna outfit.

Juventus 1 - 0 Chievo
Camoranesi 10 (J)
Stadio Delle Alpi
A Mauro German Camoranesi goal has kept Juventus in the Scudetto chase, but Chievo feel they really should have equalised in the final minutes.
Chievo have never beaten Juventus in their history and made the trip to Turin without suspended Italian international Simone Perrotta. However, they fielded Juve-owned striker Giuseppe Sculli from the start.
The Bianconeri are dealing with their worst defensive record for 40 years and needed a win to close the gap on the leading pack.
Within three minutes Juve saw a goal disallowed for David Trezeguet's offside position.
Soon after former Chievo defender Nicola Legrottaglie's bullet header brought a tough reaction save out of Luca Marchegiani.
The deadlock was eventually broken after ten minutes by Mauro German Camoranesi. Stephan Appiah's floated pass was nodded on by Trezeguet for the Italian international to turn an angled drive past a helpless Marchegiani.
There was only really one team in it and Pavel Nedved stung Marchegiani's palms with a fierce strike from distance.
Alessandro Del Piero was in fine form and tormented the Chievo back line with a series of solo efforts.
Sculli wanted a penalty when he clashed with Paolo Montero in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Juve nearly doubled their lead with Del Piero's header saved with some difficulty.
Chievo began to increase the pressure midway through the second half and gave Gianluigi Buffon a scare with Federico Cossato's header deflected just past the post.
On the resulting corner Roberto Baronio drilled a powerful effort wide of the upright.
Substitute Marco Di Vaio tried to liven up the Bianconeri and his counter-attack struck the side-netting.
The former Parma star then sprung the offside trap only to hesitate and allow the defence to catch him up.
In the final minute Chievo were handed a golden opportunity to equalise. Francesco Semioli was left completely unmarked eight yards from goal, but his sluggish header was straight at a grateful Buffon.
Juventus: Buffon; Thuram (Pessotto 81), Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Appiah; Nedved (Conte 56); Del Piero, Trezeguet (Di Vaio 67)
Chievo: Marchegiani; Moro, Barzagli, D'Anna, Lanna; Luciano (Semioli 56), Zanchetta, Baronio, Santana; Cossato (Amauri 79), Sculli (Pellissier 71)

My comments on the players:
Buffon - Didn't have much to do, but importantly, kept a cleansheet. 6
Thuram - Ok performance. Pretty good at the back, but less so going forward in the first half. Relatively solid in the second period. 6
Legrottaglie - Definitely better than Iuliano was last week. Uncharacteristicly some of the high balls caused him some problems, but he was competent enough to help keep a cleansheet. 6
Montero - Average. Some good mixed with some not so good. Has to improve his distribution of the football, even though it isn't his primary objective. 6
Zambrotta - Great effort and workrate as usual. Up and down and up and down that left flank he continues to go. 6.5
Camoranesi - My man of the match. Nice goal accompanied by some nice runs and passes here and there. 7
Tacchinardi - Effective and efficient in his quiet simple way. 6
Appiah - Not an excellent performance, but made some nice moves nevertheless. Appiah played a big part in the goal. 6
Nedved - Not his best game by any stretch of the imagination. One good shot, but that's about it. 6
Del Piero - Started with some nice moves, but gave the ball away too easily. Improved a bit when Neddy was subbed and when DV came on, but Alex can do way better. 5.5
Trezeguet - Trez was very active today and was unluckily replaced imo. Keep up the good work David. 6.5

Milan chase Parma duo
Scudetto chasing Milan are understood to have started talks for the Parma duo of Alberto Gilardino and Daniele Bonera.
The Tardini outfit are expected to lose more of their star players in the summer and both men have numerous admirers.
It was believed that Juventus were in pole position to sign the Under-21 internationals but the Rossoneri have joined the chase.
Gilardino has had a fantastic last year in which he has developed into Italy’s most promising striker.
He has particularly impressed this term after he did a wonderful job at replacing Adriano during his three-month injury lay-off.
Bonera, 23, is an old school Italian defender who can play either in the centre or as right-full back.
Milan are understood to have tabled a £6m bid for the two men but the Tardini outfit believe that is too low.
The Gialloblu want closer to £10m for the pair.
isn't them juve's target? think the price will go up

A 10th Coppa would be a very nice addition to our trophy cabinet, but really and truly the Champs League and Serie A are much more important, and with this game just a few days before the big Olimpico clash with Roma, I'm confident that Lippi will rest a number of key players.
Inter have imo a bigger, better squad than us, so if we lose I won't take it too badly, especially if we bounce back and beat Roma on the weekend. I'd love for us to come out on tops, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
May the better team win.
Forza Juve! :)

Coppa Italia Roll of Honours
Juventus 9 wins
Roma 7 wins
Torino 5 wins
Fiorentina 5 wins
Milan 5 wins
Sampdoria 4 wins
Inter 3 wins
Napoli 3 wins
Lazio 3 wins
Parma 3 wins
Bologna 2 wins
Atalanta 1 win
Genoa 1 win
Vado 1 win
Venezia 1 win
Vicenza 1 win
--------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, I believe Inter will be more serious about winning this match and the Coppa altogether. They are out of the Scudetto and Champions League and only have this Coppa as a realisitc chance to win silverware. The UEFA Cup is also possible, but difficult to win with so many strong sides competing in it such as Roma, Liverpool, Barca, Valencia, etc. In fact, Zac played with the strongest possible line-up against Udinese in the QF and that says alot.
Inter is also the team that benefited the most from the January Transfer Window, as Adriano is now back and scoring wouldn't be a problem for them anymore. Stankovic is also a nice addition in midfield, but I think Zac will have to revert to a 4-4-2, with Vieri-Adriano upfront and drop the ineffecient 3-4-3 formation that he used to play with previosuly.
As for Juve, I think we will be more concerned about the Roma match the following Sunday. However, our second team (especially Maresca and Miccoli) should be raring to go. The Serie A 3-1 defeat from Inter should also spice things up. But there are whispers in Turin that Lippi substituted Trezeguet and Nedved early on against Chievo so that they could play this match too!

Parma starlet Matteo Ferrari believes he is mature enough to make his mark at a club like Juventus.
The Italian international is known to be a target for the Italian giants and a summer swoop is becoming increasingly likely.
"It filled me with honour to see that my name was linked with a side like Juve during the January transfer window," said the 24-year-old.
"Yet I?m glad that I stayed here for the time being. However, if the club feel that they need to sell me in June then I won?t stand in their way.
"I do feel like a player who is ready to perform at the highest levels with a great club."
The central defender, formerly of Bari and Inter, has had an impressive past 18 months at the Stadio Tardini.
Juventus, given their defensive problems, are favourites to sign him - and his club colleague Daniele Bonera - in a bid to rejuvenate their rearguard.
One man that has left Parma already is director general Patrick Nebiolo. He quit last night after Luca Baraldi was brought back in a bid to resolve the club?s financial problems.
"I have resigned," he stated. "Parma have appointed Baraldi who will now continue in my role.
"With the January window now closed, a significant part of my job is over. I wish Baraldi luck in doing the best for Parma Football Club."

Marcello Lippi admits Inter have boosted their squad during the transfer window, but insists Juventus will triumph in tomorrow?s Coppa Italia clash.
?The Nerazzurri have certainly strengthened their prospects with the arrival of such great players as Adriano and Dejan Stankovic,? noted the tactician.
Some journalists in the pressroom asked whether Lippi envied the new signings lavished upon Alberto Zaccheroni.
?I am the Coach of Juventus,? he pointed out. ?How could I be envious of anybody? I have won everything with this club and our projects have always proved successful.?
His latest challenge is to win the Coppa Italia and Juve face a daunting hurdle in the shape of Inter ? a side that already beat them 3-1 in Serie A this season.
?It will be a great game,? insists Lippi of tomorrow?s semi-final, ?and we have a very strong desire to reach this Final and add another star to our shirts.?
The Bianconeri currently have a tally of nine Coppa?s and will receive a special mark on their team jerseys when reaching double figures.
Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli, Nicola Legrottaglie and David Trezeguet are out of action for this first leg encounter.
?There will be a squad rotation to balance out the strain, but there will be players on the bench who can come on and change the game if needs be.?
It is an important week for the Turin side, as they will travel to the Stadio Olimpico in a head to head battle with Roma on Sunday evening.
Alessandro Del Piero?s attention is already aimed squarely on the Capital and he looks forward to this Scudetto showdown.
?We have a golden opportunity to overtake Roma and break away in second place,? revealed the captain. ?This is one chance we cannot afford to let slip away.?

Milan starlet Kaka has pinpointed Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Pavel Nedved as his top calcio heroes.
?They are the strongest players around right now,? commented the young Brazilian. ?Roma and Juventus have some wonderful options at their disposal.?
Kaka has been the real revelation of this season in Serie A, making an immediate impact in his first taste of European football.
?My favourite goal so far has been the one I scored at Empoli,? he revealed. ?I am so happy with this adventure at Milan and although the Italian League is far from easy, I have been able to settle in quicker than expected.?
Many pundits have mused that the main difference between last year?s Milan and this current squad is the fact that Kaka? has replaced the disappointing Rivaldo.
Kaka will be able to further exhibit his talents when the Rossoneri take on Lazio for Thursday?s Coppa Italia semi-final.
Pippo Inzaghi should also make an appearance in that tie after recovering from a thigh problem that has kept him on the sidelines for six weeks

02/03/2004. BACKGROUND:
The 'Derby of Italy' is never an ordinary game, not even when it is 'just' a Coppa Italia match.
At the 'Stadio Delle Alpi' of Turin, Juventus will be hosting Inter for the first leg of the semi-final of the Coppa Italia match in program on Wednesday night.
Both teams see this cup from different points of view. For the bianconeri this is the least important objective of the season and the fact that Lippi does not field his first team in this trophy is indicative of Juve's interest. The nerazzurri on the other hand, being out of the Champions League and Scudetto chase, see this trophy with some extra importance to save a season which looks unsatisfying yet again.
Juventus arrive to this match following the hard fought win against Chievo while Inter come from a hard fought after-match against Siena, between Materazzi and Cirillo. However with the arrivals of Adriano and Stankovic and the recovery of Vieri, Inter looks more competitive and dangerous than ever before and will be ready to produce the same perofrmance which saw them 3-1 winners 2 months ago in the same ground and against the same team in Serie A.
The bianconeri will obviously want to put that result and especially that performance behind their backs and try to get revenge against a team who has only defeated them once in the past 10 years on their own home soil.
TEAM NEWS:
Juventus - Lippi's only unavailable player will be Birindelli, however the Tuscan coach will still field his second line-up for this game.
Inter - Zaccheroni is still without his injured players Materazzi, Coco, C. Zanetti, Almeyda, Martins and Vieri, even though the latter is on his road to recovery and will be available shortly.
PROBABLE FORMATIONS:
Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Thuram, Ferrara, Iuliano, Pessotto; Appiah, Tudor, Conte; Maresca; Di Vaio, Miccoli
Inter (3-4-3): Toldo; Cordobam Adanim Cannavaro; Helveg, Lamouchi, Farinos, J. Zanetti; Stankovic, Adriano, Recoba
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Miccoli (Juventus): With Del Piero's poor form, the pocket-sized forward will try to push his way into the first eleven against Roma with another convincing performance.
Adriano (Inter): Probably the best striker in the world who will be ready to start giving new joys to his fans.

Juventus warm up for Sunday's eagerly-awaited league game against Roma by hosting Inter Milan in Wednesday's Coppa Italia semi-final first-leg.
Sunday's 1-0 win against Chievo has brought added optimism for Marcello Lippi's men following some patchy performances - especially in defence - in recent weeks.
"It is an important victory, I am happy with the way our defence has played," said Lippi after watching his team see off the Verona club.
The Turin giants drew level with Roma in second position in Serie A after the Giallorossi's slip-up at Brescia at the weekend, where Fabio Capello's team were defeated 1-0.
However, the Bianconeri will need a victory in the Eternal City if they want to break away from Roma and keep up the pressure on leaders AC Milan, who are currently five points ahead.
With one eye on Sunday's vital encounter, Lippi is set to rest his key players when they take on Inter in the Coppa Italia.
Bianconeri strikers Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet are set to start on the bench as Italian duo Marco Di Vaio and Fabrizio Miccoli step in to form Juve's attacking line.
Juve, who are the kings of the Coppa Italia having won the trophy nine times, aim to clinch a place in the final following last year's disappointing exit at the quarter-final stages.
A convincing win on Wednesday would give the Bianconeri the cushion they are likely to need ahead of next week's return-leg at San Siro, and would put them in an excellent frame of mind for the trip to Roma at the weekend.
However, when the two teams met earlier in the season it was Inter who got the better of Juve with a 3-1 league victory at the Stadio Delle Alpi.
"They (Juve) will certainly think of that game but I don't think they will be looking for revenge," insisted Inter chief Alberto Zaccheroni.
"I don't know how they will play I am just focusing on how my team will play."
Although Inter ended a recent run of poor form with a 4-0 thrashing of Siena in Serie A on Sunday night, the Scudetto seems out of reach with the Nerazzurri trailing 13 points behind city rivals Milan.
"At this time the Scudetto seems very unlikely for us but we still have two other aims, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup," said Inter forward Alvaro Recoba, who scored twice against Siena.
The Nerazzurri appear to have found their rhythm again their following the arrival of Brazilian forward Adriano and Serbo-Montenegrin midfielder Dejan Stankovic.
Zaccheroni hopes his team will repeat Sunday's commanding performance against the Tuscans.
"We played more aggressively, with more alternatives in attack, showing good football," he said.
Unlike Lippi, Zaccheroni will be forced to make some changes to his first XI.
Adriano and Alvaro Recoba will play up front as strikers Christian Vieri and Obafemi Martins are still recovering from injury.
Argentinian striker Julio Cruz is also unavailable as he serves a one-match ban.
In the other semi-final, Coppa Italia holders AC Milan host Lazio on Thursday in a game expected to herald the comeback of the Inzaghi brothers, Milan's Filippo and Lazio's Simone, who have both recovered from injury.

Im not worried about Del Piero, Nedved or Trezeguets absence.. ... my only concern at this point is ... Iuliano an Pesotto at the back - Oh man.... thats like starting with 9 men on the field
Apart from that, our midfield without Nedved, Tacchinardi etc still matches up well against Inters since we have Maresca in there
Adriano may be the best striker there is at the moment... but Recoba is far from it .... while we have Miccoli and Di Vaio up front who are both lethal.
Its just the defense that worries me I get worried even when the defense is at full strength with Legrottaglie and Zambrotta.... and now without them..hope our defence can do well later :)

Four goals, a red card and five rattles of the woodwork made for a fiery Coppa Italia semi-final between Juventus and Inter.
The Nerazzurri triumphed here in a 3-1 Serie A victory when the two teams met earlier this season and believe they have a foot in the Final thanks to these two away goals.
Juventus opted to rest several top stars and adapted a new three-man defence. Inter were struggling with an injury crisis and were almost forced to field their first choice eleven, as Julio Cruz was suspended.
However, Adriano has made a stunning start to his career with the Nerazzurri and broke the deadlock within the opening three minutes.
Mark Iuliano and the other defenders assumed that the Brazilian was offside when Alvaro Recoba?s cross came in, but the flag correctly stayed down and Adriano pierced Antonio Chimenti?s net with a cool finish.
It took another four minutes for Juventus to equalise thanks to another defensive error, this time at the other end of the field.
Francesco Toldo cleared the ball straight at Fabrizio Miccoli, allowing Marco Di Vaio to slot into an empty net.
It was a fiery encounter with a series of mistakes in all areas of the pitch, as moments later Iuliano?s error let Adriano through and a desperate Chimenti block resulted in Kily Gonzalez ballooning over the bar.
The chances kept on coming as on thirteen minutes Toldo performed a stunning reaction save on Iuliano?s fierce volley.
There was more bad news for Inter when Carlos Gamarra limped off with an injury and made way for Okan Buruk, switching to a four-man defence.
Inter have been in the news recently for Marco Materazzi?s two month ban and another moment of tension occurred when Alvaro Recoba was booked for a scuffle with Antonio Conte as he reacted to a challenge.
Alberto Zaccheroni?s men doubled their lead just before the break. The Bianconeri defence was again very shaky and left Adriano completely unmarked for a free header on Recoba?s cross from six yards.
Adriano was ready to celebrate his hat-trick in the closing stages of the first half when another Recoba centre was floated in, but Gianluca Zambrotta bravely dived in front of his volley.
Juventus nearly drew level less than a minute later when Fabrizio Miccoli sprung the offside trap, but his angled drive merely shook the side netting.
The second half started in a similarly action-packed fashion, as within 60 seconds of the restart Igor Tudor?s header had thumped the far post.
Di Vaio then wasted another golden opportunity despite out-sprinting Ivan Cordoba when his angled drive whistled inches wide.
Okan Buruk went even closer when he rattled the crossbar with a precise header, while Adriano?s low drive also struck the base of the post on 63 minutes.
But on the counter-attack of that same move Francesco Toldo saw red for handling Miccoli?s lob outside the penalty area. The Inter goalkeeper accepted the decision without argument and made way for 19-year-old Alex Cordaz.
The teenager almost conceded a goal within seconds of his debut, as Miccoli?s free kick slammed the upright.
Juventus got back into the game with Di Vaio?s brace on 70 minutes, springing the offside trap on Ciro Ferrara?s sliderule pass and blasting in off the crossbar to give the young goallie no chance.
Pavel Nedved stepped on to the pitch and his angled drive immediately skimmed the far post, then he demanded a penalty for Fabio Cannavaro?s challenge, but the referee waved play on.
The Bianconeri poured forward in search of the winner and Nedved?s free kick was deflected on to the crossbar in a heated finale.

Juventus have opened talks with Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Cambiasso.
The Argentine is off contract in the summer and is being lined up by Juve as a direct replacement for Edgar Davids, who is currently on-loan at Barcelona.
Juve chief Luciano Moggi said yesterday, "We will replace Davids with a player who will not cost us any transfer fee."
Cambiasso, 23, is being allowed to leave Real after dropping off the first team radar since the arrival of coach Carlos Queiroz this season.

Juventus are pushing for an early agreement with Lazio over defender Jaap Stam.
The Dutchman has been told by Lazio officials that he will be sold in the summer. The Rome club does not want a repeat of the Dejan Stankovic situation, with Stam's current deal having less than 18 months to run.
Juve are pulling out all stops to land the former Manchester United centre-half and have already made a preliminary offer of £6 million, plus the shared registration of one their top young players.
Lazio are demanding £7 million, but Juve chiefs are confident the Romans won't get a better offer than theirs.

dun really wan him to come cos we'll have a decent defender (he's not like he used to be) for another 2 years at most?? then what??
we'll just have another Ferrara/Montero/Grandpa case.
We need long-term replacements. That means younger defenders. Get Mexes, get Trabelsi, move Thuram in the middle.

Juventus boss Marcello Lippi has admitted that his side made some mistakes in the 2-2 draw with Inter last night.
The two teams met at the Delle Alpi in a highly entertaining first leg which has put Inter in pole position to reach the Coppa Italia final.
"We made a few errors in the first half," stated the tactician whose defence again looked sluggish as Adriano scored twice. "We conceded one goal too many even if it was an excellent game."
The Italian champions twice came from behind thanks to a good display and two goals from Marco Di Vaio.
"Di Vaio did play well but he was only doing what we expect from him like his teammates," noted Lippi.
Although the result clearly favours Inter, boss Alberto Zaccheroni had a few regrets about the tie.
"I was hoping for a different result," he explained. "We had some really good opportunities to win the game."
Inter did play well in spells despite the absence of a host of injured first team members. Their cause was then complicated by the dismissal of goalkeeper Francesco Toldo.
"The game started badly for us as we almost immediately lost Gamarra with an injury," added Zac. "Then Toldo?s dismissal complicated things even further."

Juventus ace Marco Di Vaio is hoping that his two goals last night will see him win a first team shirt against Roma.
The Italian international has regularly been left out of the League side this term as boss Marcello Lippi has preferred to play with David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero.
Yet the striker reminded Lippi of his ability at the Delle Alpi on Wednesday when he scored a brace in the 2-2 Coppa Italia draw with Inter.
"I?m obviously pleased with my performance but I?m already thinking about Sunday?s game now," said the former Parma man.
"I?m at Lippi?s total disposal, even if I?m not hiding the fact that I would love to start against Roma at the Olimpico."
The Giallorossi are a favourite opponent for Di Vaio who was brought up through the Lazio youth system.
He already proved his ability in the first meeting this term when he scored both in the 2-2 draw at the Delle Alpi.
At this moment in time it seems as if Del Piero is favourite to start, but Lippi may select Di Vaio instead when taking into account the form of both players right now.

sorry...we dun want u..
Esteban Cambiasso has said that he would consider leaving Real Madrid for Italy in the summer.
The Argentine has less than six months left on his contract with the Spaniards and Juventus have been linked with his services.
"My contract is set to expire and I?ve heard nothing from the club with regard to a possible extension," said the 23-year-old.
"I wouldn?t mind moving to Italy but for now I?m just concentrating on winning the Liga, the Coppa del Re and the Champions? League."
The central midfielder has fallen away from the Real first team since the club replaced boss Vicente Del Bosque with Carlos Queiroz.
Juventus are searching for a new combative midfielder after they lost Edgar Davids to Barcelona.
They allowed the Dutchman to leave in January as his contract with the Turin side was set to expire at the end of this season.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Davids will soon be back in Italy. Inter are keen to sign him once his loan spell at the Nou Camp ends.

Depor must clear high hurdle
Thursday, 29 January 2004
By Andy Hall
Little over a decade ago, RC Deportivo La Coruña were not even a top-flight club. Now they are not only resident in the upper reaches of the Primera División, but also enjoying a fourth consecutive year in the UEFA Champions League. Brazilian midfield player Mauro Silva has been central to that rise, and this month committed himself to another season at the club - which will be his 13th in all.
Juve rematch
However, Deportivo are yet to progress beyond the last eight of the competition, and even to reach that stage this season they must beat 2002/03 finalists Juventus FC. Mauro Silva played both of Deportivo's second group stage games against Juventus last term - a home draw and away defeat - as the Galician side were eliminated and the Italian champions advanced in an exact reverse of what happened between them in the 2001/02 Champions League. Unsurprisingly, he knows his team face a formidable hurdle.
Praise for opponents
"I think they are one of the strongest, most experienced teams in the competition," Mauro Silva told uefa.com. "Furthermore, they are a very physical side who always make the most of their style of play - even when they are not at their best, Juve are capable of beating anyone."
Dangerous without Davids
Even the loss of Edgar Davids to FC Barcelona will not weaken Juventus, according to the 36-year-old. "Davids gave them strength in the centre of the field and an edge in attack but they are a very strong team and I am sure they will be just as dangerous without him," he said.
Formidable forwards
Juventus's attack is especially hard to stop, Mauro Silva admitted. "There is no recipe for stopping players of the calibre of [Alessandro] Del Piero and [Marco] Di Vaio. The only thing we can do is to be extra attentive over the whole 90 minutes and not give them any room at any point in the game. It is important to make them feel uncomfortable and to make sure they are always well marked, wherever they might be on the pitch."
Italian renaissance
Certainly, Serie A clubs are having a resurgence in UEFA competition, as last season proved, and Mauro Silva thinks he knows why. "Italian teams are usually very well organised, defensively well prepared, and if they score first then they can cause you problems. They close the game down and that can be damaging. You have to keep your head and if you get the chance to score first then you have an advantage over them."
Last four chance
If Deportivo take that advantage, maybe this is the year they can reach the last four. "I have always believed Deportivo can make the semi-finals of the Champions League and play a great role in the competition," Mauro Silva said. "Any team like Deportivo, who have won the Spanish league and been in the Champions League for four years, can reach the semis."
Tough competition
On a note of caution, he added: "But just as Depor can be up there, so can Manchester [United FC], [AC] Milan, Real Madrid [CF], FC Bayern (München]. We are talking about a competition that is very closely contested where practically all the teams that have come this far are capable of doing well, even the so-called smaller teams. Any of them can progress. Depor have the ability to play an important role and do well in this year's competition."

Once upon a time, the Gazzetta Dello Sport would boast in the face of the Daily Mirror and Marca about the mighty, yet beautiful, 'Seven Sisters' who once resided in Italia and made the Calcio very much compelling and enjoyable.
However, out of those seven sisters only three seem to be able to survive the meager conditions that have rocked the world of football lately.
Fiorentina, once the nemesis of Juve, had a champion and hero in the form of Gabriele Omar Batistuta. Florence also thrived for Rui Costa's fancy moves that easily ridiculed opponents while Toldo saved their goal with immense braveness. However, the team fell from the Champions League to the fourth division after financial mismanagement from their 'sugar daddy', Vittorio Cecchi Gori The youngest sister 's abrupt fall have left the loyal fans dismayed with nothing but memories from the old days.
Parma, sixth in order between the sisters, also seem to be following Fiorentina's footsteps. The two times UEFA Cup winners have been sucked into Parmalat's black hole thanks to president, Stefano Tanzi. Even though the team has awakened on the harsh reality that it no longer has an owner to pay for expenses and take care of the club, but Parma has coped well and is sure of Serie A survival for next season at least. But will Parma earn the same respect it did from opponents when nearly all stars are offloaded to other teams in an 'open market' during the summer?
Then comes Lazio. After the trouble that Cragnotti brought to the club with his farfetched dreams and search for glory, Lazio seem to be finally a stable ship once again. However, the team is so financially stricken that no more 'stars' are expected to join the club. For those types of players there is only one way, Out. Eventually, stars of the team will be heading towards the end of their contracts and the club would have no choice but to either sell them or lose them for nothing a la Stankovic. That's why Lazio is getting weaker every year. Not a very good sign for the Biancocelesti fans.
There are still remnants in the streets of Rome from the famous and wild celebrations that continued for months after the 2001 Serie A triumph. However, the future looks bleak for this side of the Eternal City too. The Roman Gladiators haven't received their wages for months now and the club is expected to release one or two of its jewels (Emerson/Totti??) in the summer to finance the club. In fact, Sensi is expected to step down and sell the club all together soon due to the dire conditions of his club. He even got away with providing forged bank guarantees at the start of the season.
That leaves us with the remaining three sisters.
Only fans of those teams can dream of the future with stability and optimism.
Admittedly, Inter haven't been successful lately but are still bankrolled by Moratti and would thus be signing world class players every year without fears of impoverishment.
The empire of Juve follows a tight policy that ensures the club operates with a profit at the end of the financial year and still win some trophies here and there.
Fans of Milan must be Livin' La Vida Loca. After the famous European triumph in Manchester in an all-Italian final, the team is on course for more success this term. Thanks to Senior Berlusconi's millions, that is.
But what happens if the wealthy owner steps down and the cash runs away? Will the joy easily turn into pain as the other sisters discovered? And what will happen to the fallen giants, will they remain asleep until an Abramovich knocks their door?
Teams like Chievo and Atalanta have tried to save some face for Italy during the past seasons with some worthy efforts. However, everyone in Italy knows it: things will never be the same again in Serie A.

A host of Italian clubs are monitoring the contract situation of Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta.
The young Brazilian had verbally agreed terms with Barca over a new, long-term deal in November, but the forms are still to be signed.
The arrival of Edgar Davids, on-loan from Juventus, has further clouded the picture and Serie A clubs Juve, Inter, AC Milan and Lazio are all keen to speak with Barca about Motta's availability.
Juve asked about Motta during talks over Davids' switch, while Milan's technical staff have been following the youngster since he was 16 years old.
If Barca management decide against following through and signing Motta to a new contract, the Spanish giants are expected to spark an auction amongst Serie A clubs for the Brazilian at the end of the season.

Roma - Juventus
LIVE on British Eurosport (KO 7.30pm UK time)
Stadio Olimpico
Expect some fireworks at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night as Roma entertain Juventus in one of the fiercest rivalries in Italian football. Yet this time there is not just pride at stake as both clubs are fighting for Lo Scudetto.
The pair are currently level on 43 points in the League ? five behind leaders Milan. And with the Rossoneri favourites to beat Perugia in Week 20, a loss for either Roma or Juve could severely hinder their championship ambitions.
Neither club are in great form at the moment even if Juventus? results have not been too bad. Roma on the other hand are in the midst of a mini crisis. The month of January saw them held at home by Udinese, as well as losing to Milan and Brescia.
Roma?s dip in form may see boss Fabio Capello opt for a change of system. Their trident strike force was one of the key elements behind their blistering start to the season but they?ve struggled over the past few weeks.
Antonio Cassano in particular is suffering so he may de dropped in favour of a five-man midfield. Yet Capello may keep the youngster in the side alongside Totti given Juventus? defensive problems this term. The class of Totti and Cassano could prove to be a massive headache for the Bianconeri.
Olivier Dacourt is set to be recalled to the side after his one match suspension, while Christian Panucci should just edge out Jonathan Zebina for a place in defence alongside Walter Samuel and Cristian Chivu. Montella is still out with injury.
Juve boss Marcello Lippi also has plenty to think about in the week prior to the game. Juve managed to keep a clean sheet last week against Chievo but the minnows did have their chances. Nevertheless, the much criticised Nicola Legrottaglie is set to retain his place.
He was at the centre of a summer transfer battle between the two clubs. He had looked destined to move to the Olimpico before Juve swept in. But he?s had his problems, while Chivu who Roma signed instead has been superb.
The only other notable selection problem is whether to keep faith with Alex Del Piero. He still hasn?t hit his best form since his return from injury. Could he be dropped in favour of either Marco Di Vaio or Fabrizio Miccoli?
Roma (probable): Pelizzoli; Panucci, Samuel, Chivu; Mancini, Emerson, Dacourt, Lima; Totti, Cassano, Carew
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Appiah, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet

If Roma play with:
(4-4-1-1)
Pelizzoli
Panucci-Zébina-Samuel-Chivu
Mancini-Dacourt-Emerson-Lima
Totti
Carew
We should play:
(4-3-1-2)
Buffon
Thuram-Legrotaglie-Montero-Zambrotta
Camoranesi-Tudor-Tacchinardi
Nedved
Trezeguet-Del Piero(Di Vaio 2nd half)

According to Soccerage:
"During today's training, Fabio Capello tried the duo Carew-Totti upfront.
This might be an indication that Cassano will be sacrificed against Juventus as the Roma coach will play with a more covered 4-4-1-1 formation. "

Juve trail in Lucio chase
Friday 6 February, 2004
Chelsea are close to beating Juventus for the services of Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio this summer.
The Brazilian international is a target for the Italian club as they look to rejuvenate their ageing rearguard.
However, the stopper has fuelled speculation that he could be set for a move to the Premiership instead.
"The offer from Chelsea is the most concrete I've received so far," said the 2002 World Cup winner.
"Moving to London would not be a problem for me. After all, it's not much colder than in Germany."
Lucio, who has been at Bayer for the last three seasons, was close to joining Roma last summer but personal terms couldn’t be agreed.
That was amidst rumours that Juventus had hijacked the deal but Bayer have themselves admitted that they are holding talks with Chelsea.
"It’s no secret," said general manager Ilja Kaenzig. "There is a chance that he might be leaving us at the end of the season."
Juve could now turn their attention to Parma defenders Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera who may be available for transfer in June.

Get Lucio is a waste of money Kind of too old for the team like Juventus. Beside he is not cheap either. I suggest that they look for defenders in clubs like Roma and Lazio or Parma where they can get young cheap and good defenders.

Marcello Lippi insists that even a defeat at Roma on Sunday evening would not rule Juventus out of the Scudetto chase.
?It would be an important victory if we could leave the Stadio Olimpico with three points,? noted the tactician, ?but even a defeat would not mean we?d let go of the title.?
The Bianconeri have earned their last two League titles with a remarkable run of form in the closing stages of the campaign and hope to repeat that trend in 2004.
However, the tension of taking on their old rivals in such a crucial stage of the season has pushed the club to rule a press silence.
?There is always a particularly strange atmosphere leading up to games like this,? confessed Lippi. ?We decided not to speak with the newspapers in order to avoid unnecessary controversy and the misuse of our comments.?
One element of the clash that has taken up many newspaper column inches is the fact Pierluigi Collina will officiate.
?Collina is one of the world?s best referees and will be in charge of a game between two of the strongest sides in Italy. It is a correct decision,? assured the Coach.
A strong official is needed for a tie that traditionally causes a great deal of controversy and emotional scenes.
?It is difficult to predict what kind of match it will be. This is the first of three Scudetto clashes between the top teams and everyone wants to win in front of millions of people.?
The public will be able to view this encounter live on British Eurosport, but it is also being beamed all over the world.
?This game will undoubtedly have everything,? continued Lippi. ?There will be grit, entertainment, determination and classy football. Roma have a better defence, but we have scored more than anyone else in Serie A.?
?But there is something more important than that: It will not be decisive. Whoever loses this match will not be ruled out of the Scudetto chase entirely.?

Its reported that Juve chief Luciano Moggi is offering the Dutchman £2 million-a-year to choose the Turin giants over other bids.
Inter Milan are also in the frame for Stam after it was made public last week that the defender had been told he would be sold at the end of the season.

The Argentine is off contract in the summer and has admitted to being keen to play in Serie A next season.
Only days after Juve made contact with Cambiasso's representatives, Inter were also reportedly in talks about a possible move.
Cambiasso is on £450,000-a-year at Real currently, but is asking for a £1.2 million salary when his contract expires.

Newcastle United have been alerted to Marco Di Vaio's situation at Juventus.
It's understood the Italian international has asked for a move from the Turin giants after failing to nail down a regular starting place this season.
Newcastle, along with Birmingham and Middlesbrough, have been tracking Di Vaio this season and several Premiership scouts were spotted at last week's Coppa Italia semi against Inter.
Lazio have also asked about Di Vaio, who could become part of the deal that brings defender Jaap Stam to Juve.

By Paddy Agnew
"I rate him as the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment," Manchester United FC's Ryan Giggs told uefa.com. S.S. Lazio's Jaap Stam added: "There are many great goalkeepers in Serie A at the moment, but for me Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus [FC] is just about the best."
Fans' accolade
The respect of his peers is one thing - the reverence of the footballing public is another, and the Italian goalkeeper also scooped a major honour when he was named in uefa.com users' Team of 2003. The plaudits are welcome, but as he told uefa.com, Buffon's priority for this year is UEFA EURO 2004?.
uefa.com: Let's go back to the beginning of this qualifying campaign. After Italy's premature exit from the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, how deep was the sense of disappointment in the team camp?
Buffon: After the World Cup finals, we definitely had a couple of months when we were a bit lost and it looked as if the coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, was no longer in control of the situation. Yet, in the end, with no fuss and with his typical coolness, he turned things around and got a grip of the team again.
uefa.com: Obviously, those problems came home to roost when Italy were beaten 2-1 by Wales in Cardiff. With just four points from your first three games, did you begin to think that you might not qualify?
Buffon: Certainly, at that moment we weren't thinking of winning the group, that's for sure. Frankly, it seemed that we might need a miracle to get to the finals, perhaps via the play-offs. Yet, in the end, thanks to a bit of luck and to our own bravura, having touched the very bottom, we managed to come up again and get into the finals.
uefa.com: Almost one year later at the San Siro, however, Italy gained revenge in a 4-0 win. What was the atmosphere like that night?
Buffon: It was electric, because we were really up for that game. We knew it was an absolutely vital game for us and then more than anything we really wanted to wipe out the memory of Cardiff. Then, after a first half that finished 0-0, a first half when we had been a bit unlucky, you begin to get just a bit afraid, you begin to think to yourself that this will be one of those nights when nothing goes right. In the end, of course, it wasn't.
uefa.com: That was clearly the definitive turning point in the group?
Buffon: Undoubtedly. After all, Wales had been on top of the group looking good, for us it was like winning away from home.
uefa.com: Many commentators feel that Italy got a good draw along with Denmark, Sweden and Bulgaria for the finals in Portugal. Do you agree?
Buffon: Yes definitely. We're drawn with sides that can be awkward but are certainly not the strongest in the tournament.
uefa.com: Simple question, now. Can Italy win EURO 2004? and atone for that last gasp defeat by France four years ago?
Italy can win because this is an experienced, quality team with a strong squad and some class players
Gianluigi Buffon
Buffon: Yes, Italy can win because this is an experienced, quality team with a strong squad and some class players, any one of whom can win a match for you at any moment. Look at [Christian] Vieri, [Alessandro] Del Piero and [Francesco] Totti - they are three brilliant players who not only play well together but who also put themselves at the service of the team in defence.

great to have the best ref in the world to take cchrage of this v impt game..
Pierluigi Collina has been picked to take charge of Sunday?s big game, but the Bianconeri are not best pleased.
The draw for the Week 20 fixtures has handed Collina one of the fieriest encounters in the Serie A calendar.
?We are happy with this draw,? commented refereeing designator Pierluigi Pairetto, ?as he has not been given a big match for too long now. He is the World?s number one referee and it is right that he should be in charge of such a high-profile fixture.?
However, Collina?s record with Juventus is a worrying aspect for Marcello Lippi?s men going into this clash.
The Turin outfit has not won a single League game with Collina in charge since 10 Dec 2000 and effectively asked not to be refereed by him after losing the Scudetto at Perugia.
Director General Luciano Moggi has ordered a press silence ahead of this match and only Marcello Lippi will speak with journalists in a press conference.
This will be the third time that Collina has officiated over a meeting between these two teams.
In 1995-96 he oversaw both their ties, a 2-0 win for Roma in Turin and 2-2 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.
Leaders Milan, at the centre of refereeing controversy after a handling offence was overlooked in last week?s 2-0 win at Bologna, will face Perugia under the guidance of Trefoloni.
Chievo-Lecce (Dondarini)
Empoli-Siena (Messina)
Milan-Perugia (Trefoloni)
Modena-Ancona (Rodomonti)
Parma-Lazio (Dattilo)
Reggina-Brescia (Pieri)
Roma-Juventus (Collina)
Sampdoria-Inter (Paparesta)

02/07/2004. BACKGROUND:
After losing the Serie A lead to AC Milan two weeks ago, Fabio Capello's AS Roma side will be looking to finally get back to the form they showed for most part of last year, when they welcome third place Juventus to the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma are in a very bad patch of form, and are coming off only their second league loss so far this season, a 1-0 defeat to lowly Brescia away from home. Capello's men have looked nothing like the side that dominated the league for most part of last year and have subsequently lost the lead they held for almost the entire first half of the season.
Juventus are coming off a hard fought 1-0 win to Chievo Verona last weekend, as well as a midweek 2-2 draw with Inter in the Italian Cup. Although Lippi did not choose to field a full strength team in this match, he did go on to say after the game that once again, his team's defending was very poor. Surprisingly, the Juve defence has conceded an amazing 21 goals in 18 games this season and this has been their weak point. Compare this to Roma and Milan, who have only conceded 9 goals thus far, and you begin to realise how important a solid defence is to have a chance of winning the Scudetto.
FORM GUIDE:
Roma - WLWLDL
Roma have been very poor recently, losing to Milan twice on top of last week's loss to Brescia. They also drew 1-1 with Udinese two weeks ago, after leading for most of the match. This is definitely not the type of form that would give their supporters any confidence of knocking over the champions.
Juventus - WWWDWD
Juventus have looked solid in the last few weeks, but their defence is still the main talking point. Last week's victory over Chievo is the only game in the past six weeks in which they haven't conceded a goal. The 3-3 draw with Empoli two weeks ago was a perfect example of the Juve defence being blatantly exploited.
LATEST TEAM NEWS:
There have been whispers in the past couple of days that Capello is considering switching to a four man defensive line, instead of the usual back three he plays. In training yesterday, it was reported that the former Milan boss tried out a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Carew the target man and Totti just behind him. This of course, leaves Antonio Cassano on the bench, but it remains to be seen whether Capello will give this formation the green light. On the injury front, Roma have a full squad available, besides Vincenzo Montella, who is still on the sidelines after injuring himself in training three weeks ago.
Juventus will be missing Birindelli, but other than that, Lippi has a full squad at his disposal. It will be interesting to see if Marco Di Vaio will be given a place in the starting line-up, after his brilliant performance in the Italian cup last Tuesday. It is amazing how such a regular goal scorer is left on the bench so often, and you can't help but feel sorry for Di Vaio, who definitely deserves a place in Lippi's team. The Lazio junior would jump at the chance to play against Roma, and would certainly be an asset for his team, if he is given a go from the starting whistle.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Roma ? Antonio Cassano
The Roma prodigy has gone missing in the past few weeks and has looked nothing like the player he was at the start of the season. If Cassano wants to go to EURO 2004, then a good performance in a crucial match such as this one will go a long way in convincing Trapattoni that he deserves a seat on the plane to Portugal this summer. He must stand up.
Juventus ? David Trezeguet
The former Monaco striker has found some form in the past few weeks, and has once again looked unstoppable. After resolving his contract, which he is almost certain to sign next week, Trezeguet has gotten on with his job ?a hat trick against Empoli two weeks ago. Capello knows that his defenders will have to be in top shape to combat the force of the French hitman.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS:
Roma (4-4-2): Pelizzoli; Panucci, Zebina, Samuel, Chivu; Mancini, Dacourt, Emerson, D'Agostino; Totti, Cassano;
Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Conte; Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet;

gd gd...he's awesome!!!
The Turin side is lining up a summer swoop for Barcelona?s want-away starlet Javier Saviola.
Juventus have long been interested in the 22-year-old Argentine and were heavily involved in negotiations before he eventually chose Barca.
However, he has struggled to settle in and recent disagreements with Coach Frank Rijkaard have seemingly spelled the end for his time at the Nou Camp.
Newspapers in his homeland maintain that Barcelona have begun offering Saviola?s services to a number of top European clubs for next season.
He was also linked to Inter and Milan before Christmas, but it seems that Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi is working to seal off any competition.
Trade links between the two clubs are already strong thanks to Edgar Davids? January move to Barca and Moggi hopes to capitalise on that rapport as soon as possible.
The creative midfielder would bring that extra spark of vision to the Bianconeri side that has been somewhat lacking in recent years.
It is instead claimed that Milan will turn their attention towards Tottenham Hotspur enigma Helder Postiga.
The Portuguese international would join his fellow countryman Manuel Rui Costa at the San Siro in a deal worth £6m.

Roma 4 - 0 Juventus
Dacourt 13 (R), Totti pen 53 (R), Cassano 70, 85 (R)
Stadio Olimpico
A stunning Roma performance has steamrollered Scudetto holders Juventus after Paolo Montero's red card and a saved penalty.
Scudetto showdowns don't get much bigger than this as the two joint-second teams face off for the right to race off after runaway leaders Milan.
There was a big shock for Bianconeri fans ahead of kick-off, as captain Alessandro Del Piero took his seat in the stands due to a muscular twinge during the warm-up.
Marco Di Vaio - who scored both goals in the 2-2 draw between these teams in Turin earlier this season when he substituted Del Piero - stepped in to partner David Trezeguet.
Roma adopted a new 4-4-2 system with Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti upfront, introducing Christian Panucci and Jonathan Zebina to the defence.
The Giallorossi had a good start and Cristian Chivu's curling free kick was fingertipped round the post by Gianluigi Buffon. On the resulting corner Olivier Dacourt gathered on the edge of the box and placed an angled drive into the far corner.
The game sparked into life and Mauro Camoranesi's chip just failed to reach Di Vaio, but on the counter-attack Francesco Totti's magnificent half-volley slammed the underside of the bar.
Pavel Nedved went on a strong run and his fierce drive was just wide of Ivan Pelizzoli's goal.
David Trezeguet became a makeshift defender with a crucial headed clearance on Chivu's powerful effort.
At the other end Di Vaio nodded a Camoranesi free kick wide, but there were timid penalty appeals for Lilian Thuram's unorthodox challenge on Antonio Cassano following a Paolo Montero error.
Di Vaio picked up a knock and was replaced just before the half-time break by the explosive Fabrizio Miccoli.
But Roma started the second half in confident fashion and a last ditch challenge prevented Emerson getting a clean shot on Totti's assist.
It came as little surprise when on 52 minutes Paolo Montero brought down Cassano in the box and Pierluigi Collina inevitably pointed to the spot. Francesco Totti stepped up and turned his penalty in off the inside of the upright.
The tension rose and Montero saw red for a second bookable offence just moments after he gave away the penalty. The Uruguayan hacked at Totti's ankle and it could easily have been a straight red.
Bizarrely, Juventus have had at least one player sent off in this fixture for the last four years running.
Roma were on cloud nine and Buffon parried a powerful Amantino Mancini effort from the edge of the box.
Miccoli refused to give in and Pelizzoli was forced into a risky rush off his line to clear from the former Perugia man.
The goalkeeper then plucked an Igor Tudor header out of the air from another Miccoli set-piece.
But the home side was running the show and Cassano skipped past two defenders before blasting over the bar.
Miccoli is a set-piece specialist and Pelizzoli scrambled his fierce curling effort clear at the near post. The young goalkeeper also missed the resulting corner kick, but no Juve players were ready to take advantage.
Instead Roma made the pressure pay off and took their lead to three goals with Antonio Cassano. The starlet was left unmarked to sidefoot in a deflected Mancini cross from six yards as Juve's disastrous defensive record took another twist.
There was controversy soon after, as Collina awarded a penalty to Juventus for Chivu's push on Alessio Tacchinardi. The Frenchman stepped up and fired his central spot-kick straight at Pelizzoli's feet.
The scoreline could have been extended further, but Buffon batted away a fierce Totti free kick and Christian Panucci turned a header over.
It got even worse in the final minutes when Cassano was left completely unmarked in the centre to nod in Mancini's sweeping centre following a well-worked team move. The youngster was booked for over-celebrating as he broke the corner flag and it had to be replaced.
Roma: Pelizzoli; Panucci, Zebina, Samuel, Chivu; Lima, Emerson, Dacourt (De Rossi 91), Mancini; Cassano (Carew 87), Totti (D'Agostino 89)
Juventus: Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Appiah 67), Tacchinardi, Conte (Tudor 57); Nedved; Di Vaio (Miccoli 45), Trezeguet
Ref: Collina

Marcello Lippi insists that Juventus have no intention of giving up the Scudetto chase despite lagging eight points behind the leaders.
?This is a message to those Juventus fans who I understand will be downhearted this evening: Nobody here is giving up.?
Many have ruled the Bianconeri ? who have lifted the last two Italian titles ? out of the running after tonight?s 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Roma.
?If anyone out there thinks Juve will let go of this Scudetto then they can take that idea right out of their heads,? added Lippi. ?This is not over.?
The worst Bianconeri defence for forty years reared its ugly head once more by conceding four goals.
?Quite simply Juventus were in the game until we went 2-0 down,? he insisted. ?When I was preparing the substitution of our two players who were already booked Paolo Montero was sent off and that was the end of that.?
?Today we conceded a goal on a set-piece so I don?t think Olivier Dacourt?s strike can be blamed on the defence. The penalty and the red card moments later turned the game.?
Despite dominating much of the first half, Roma went into the half-time break only 1-0 up and added to their tally in the closing stages.
?Most of Roma?s chances up until that point were chaotic moves or individual moments of magic such as when Francesco Totti rattled the crossbar, but it was a balanced encounter.?
There was controversy and surprise before the game when Alessandro Del Piero was sent to the stands, but Lippi assures there is no story to discuss.
?Del Piero suffered a muscular problem during yesterday?s training session and we tried to get him back to full fitness in time for the match. New tests showed it was a minor strain and we could not risk it. There is no mystery.?

I don?t recall watching Juve play any worse.. the highest rate for any player is 5 imo.. I?ll be very surprised if anyone get higher than that..
Buffon: he did some decent saves, but the defence was so crap.. but, again, he is not the Buffon that we know..
Montero: this guy is no good anymore.. even if he plays with the primavera, he?ll suck..
Legrotaglie: didn?t do anything that a defender should do.. maybe he needs time.. but, we should?ve sign someone better..
Thuram: the best defender tonight.. but, still.. overrun by totti and cassano..
Zambro: really bad.. mancini make him look like an average player..
Tacchi: couldn?t rise up to stop Roma?s midfield..
Conte: same as tacchi.. but, he?s excused.. he?s old.. do we need davids now, lippi..?
Camoranesi: slow.. individual.. every time he touched the ball, he lost it.. and it?s a counter attack for roma..
Nedved: was marked with more than one player.. couldn?t help us tonight..
Di Vaio: invisible.. didn?t get many chances and was replaced by miccoli..
Trez: waste the only chance to score an honor goal.. like last-year-cl-final-trez is back..
Miccoli: the best player tonight.. even if he played one half only.. he is the only one who was fighting..
Appiah: came in late.. when everything was over.. can?t say anything more..
All in all, Roma really deserved to win.. could not find any excuses for us..
I wonder what would Lippi and moggi say after this horrible match.. ohh, maybe they are warming up for inter?s match this Thursday..
For the records: it?s the first time in years we concede 4 goals in one match.. and from who.. Roma.. at this crucial time..
This game is not decisive, ha..? nice going lippi..

Fear factors:
1. MONTERO
2. Olimpico
3. Unwell-organized defence
4. No DP
5. Bad luck
6. Left back sector, most goal conceded started from there
7. Lippi didn?t change MONTERO since he got 1 yellow card
8. We lost the ball too much
9. We didn?t show JUVE SPIRIT up (I?m afraid to say we lost it)
10. It may be the first, GOD didn?t answer our prayer.
Due to the result we?d better say good-bye to Scudetto and start to focus the team in CL..

Shame on Luciano Moggi and Marcello Lippi for being so arrogant in thinking that this team just needed mental toughness to solve their defensive liabilities. I really hope that this is a lesson for this management who runs a franchise that is the 5th richest franchise in PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, yet fails to act like it. I would much rather lose these type of games, if need be, with using young defenders that we can at least build for the future with. Now its beyond too late for this year, and who knows what will happen this summer.

Okay I'm more cool down now so I'm willing to comment the match now.
Well, with the current form of our defence I was expecting Roma to beat us, but not a 4-0!!! We were totally outplay and I blame Moggi and Lippi, they are too stubborn to see that we need new defenders and now we are paying the price for their choices! Everyone can see that a good defence is important, but our dear Management and Coach failed to buy a single defender in the winter break. Shame on them
So now the scudetto is quite far, if not imposible. The Coppa, well we have a chance but with our defence to stop Adriano + Vieri + Recoba? So that leave us with only the CL, do you really see the team that play yesterday winning against Deportivo in Spain???
So... I'm looking fordward for next season :(

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero insists that he missed the Roma game because of injury.
There were whispers in Italy that he may have been left out for other reasons but the No 10 has put the record straight.
"I suffered a slight muscle injury on Saturday," he revealed. "I didn?t think it was anything serious but I still felt the pain yesterday.
"I had a fitness test but I wasn?t in any shape to play. But I repeat, it isn?t anything too serious."
Del Piero could do nothing from the stands as he witnessed his teammates being destroyed 4-0 by a rampant Roma.
"When you lose in that way it is the responsibility of everyone," he noted. "But we won?t give up in the Scudetto race.
"We now need to hit back and quickly. Starting with the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against Inter on Thursday."
Juve will need to go to the San Siro and win after the 2-2 draw in Turin last week. And Del Piero maintains he may feature.
"If there are no further problems with my fitness over the next few days then I could be available for selection," he added.
Meanwhile, his teammate Alessio Tacchinardi insists Juventus are still in the championship race despite being eight points behind leaders Milan.
"If people think we have resigned ourselves to losing our crown then they really don?t know us," he stated. "We are not dead."

02/09/2004. Gianluca Pagliuca-There isn't once the former Azzurro fails to be a vital part of his team's successes.
Sanchez Cribari (Empoli)-The Brazlian, together with his fellow defenders, cancelled out two prime striker's such as Chiesa and Flo.
Cristian Chivu (AS Roma)-'The Professor' as he is known in Rome is back in top form. Trezeguet was MIA last night.
Luigi Di Biagio (Brescia)-Continues to impress in his new central defensive role. Could a Nazionale return beckon for the Italian veteran?
Marco Cassetti (Lecce)-His second half goal sealed off his team's unexpected triumph at Chievo.
Olivier Dacourt (AS Roma)-Outplayed his Juve counterparts, and kicked off Roma's magical evening with his first Giallorosso goal.
Manuel Rui Costa (AC Milan)-His freekick got Milan out of a gooey situation and confirmed he has successfully reunited with his goalscoring ways.
Hidestoshi Nakata (Bologna)-The symbol of Bologna's renaissance together with coach Carletto Mazzone.
Francesco Totti (AS Roma)-Finally was able to demonstrate to a worldwide audience that he is currently one of the best players on the planet.
Claudio Lopez (Lazio)-Downed Parma with a brace. Since he has returned to action, the Biancocelesti have been flying.
Christian Vieri (Inter)- Adriano, Cruz, Recoba, Martins can all have their moments of glory, but the center of Inter's striking system is and has to be Bobo.

Expected to see Montero in there...
02/09/2004. Morgan De Santis (Udinese)-Gifted Bologna with the three points by totally misjudjing Nakata's swirling free-kick.
Paolo Maldini (AC Milan)-Committed a couple of un-Maldini like errors against Perugia that could have made his team's life extremely complicated.
Fabio Cannavaro (Inter)-He has strangely been the weak link of the Nerazzurri's defense this season. The Sampdoria match was no exception.
Juan Pablo Montero (Juventus)-An awful match by the Uruguayan international, who eventually got sent off for a disgusting foul on Roma skipper Francesco Totti.
Thomas Helveg (Inter)-Zac should give up on trying to make the Denmark international return to his late 1990's level of form.
Simone Tacchinardi (Juventus)-Too many fouls, no enlightening passes. This was what Tacchinardi's poor evening was all about.
Simone Barone (Parma)-Overwhelmed by Lazio's dynamic midfielders.
Luciano (Chievo)-Even though he scored, he was the worst Flying Donkey on the pitch against Lecce
Dario Hubner-Useless against AC Milan.
David Trezeguet (Juventus)-The only time he did something important on Sunday night, was when he had his penalty kicked saved by Pelizzoli.
Enrico Chiesa (Siena)-Unable to do one thing right against Empoli.

Moggi: No Juve Revolution
Tuesday 10 February, 2004
Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has resisted calls for a revolution within the Juventus camp and insists the Scudetto is not out of reach.
“I recall after defeats to Parma and Lecce the press called for a complete clear-out of our squad,” insisted the Director General, “but both times we went on to win the title. Perhaps it’s even a lucky omen to be hammered every once in a while.”
The 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Roma has left the reigning Champions eight points adrift of leaders Milan.
“We are only three points behind Roma and to be perfectly honest they deserved to win on the night,” added Moggi. “But the table is only tallied up in May.”
Above all, they are dealing with the worst defensive record for a Juve side in four decades and some believe the decision not to sign reinforcements in January was a mistake.
“It isn’t much fun to concede 25 goals in 20 games,” he admits, “but with a few injuries and other players off form right now there have been some problems. I am certain that we will find a solution before Thursday.”
The Bianconeri’s next challenge is the Coppa Italia semi-final, where they must recover from a 2-2 home draw with Inter.
However, many newspapers are already looking to the future with reports of Parma duo Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera as well as Ajax star Hatem Trabelsi targeted for the summer.
“We are keeping our eye on a few players,” conceded the dg, “but we won’t go crazy on the transfer market. Juve are a serious club that won’t end up like certain others I could mention.”
Moggi also commented on Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti’s appeal to rest his players for the upcoming international friendly.
“The Nazionale is something that belongs to everybody and therefore we should all play our part.”

The agent of Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes has confirmed a string of offers from Serie A clubs about next season.
French international Mexes is expected to quit Auxerre after Euro2004 and is believed to be favouring a move to Italy.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking Mexes since he was 15, while he is also a favourite of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
But his agent told Tuttosport yesterday: "People have asked about him from Juve, Roma, Inter and English clubs. In the end we will choose the club where the coach guarantees him of being able to play regularly."

Juventus are biding their time before making a move for AS Monaco defender Sebastien Squillaci.
Gazzetta dello Sport says no official contact has been made by Juve regarding the 23 year-old defender, however his transfer has been discussed by the club's board.
Indeed, a £6 million proposal has been drawn up and put aside ahead of an official approach to Monaco asking permission to speak with Squillaci.
Juve chief Luciano Moggi is keen to overhaul the club's defensive setup with Lilian Thuram, Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero now on the wrong side of 30.

AC Milan ace Kaka has ruled out Juventus as a potential title threat.
The Brazilian midfielder believes only AS Roma can catch Milan before the end of the season. He said, "Eight points is a huge gap for Juventus to make up.
"I think it's going to be an exciting race with Roma. But we do not have to fear anyone.
"Roma coach Fabio Capello believes the Champions League will tire us. But we have a very deep squad - two teams, really - and we can maintain our form in both competitions. I'm very confident of that."

02/11/2004. Juventus coach Marcello Lippi has blasted Roma following the Bianconeri's 4-0 defeat at the Olimpico on Sunday.
"If Milan had won 4-0 in that way they surely wouldn't have had such disagreeable attitudes," he said.
Lippi was referring to Francesco Totti as much as anyone, guilty of having turned to Igor Tudor and telling the Croatian to 'take it and go home' at the end of the match.
"Great players, even when they win against important teams, must have more respect for adversaries," added Lippi.
"Only by winning and knowing how to win can a player become great. I say it without any polemic desire and with great serenity.
"There's need for more respect for losing adversaries."

David Trezeguet has become the third Serie A based player this week to be linked with a move to Barcelona.
Milan?s Manuel Rui Costa was associated with a Nou Camp switch on Monday, his teammate Pippo Inzaghi was named on Tuesday and now it is the turn of the Juventus player.
Barca President Joan Laporta is reportedly keen on signing a recognised goalscorer who can guarantee his club over 20 goals in a season.
Trezeguet?s future in Turin has been the subject of speculation for some time as his contract expires in 2005.
The French international has often stated that he wants to stay at the Delle Alpi but only in return for an increased salary.
That seems to be the major stumbling block even if the Bianconeri hinted last month that an agreement will be reached.
Barca are allegedly ready to offer around £22m, a fee that could tempt the Italian champions to sell.
After all, this is a club that released Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid for £48m and Inzaghi to Milan for £23m.
In other transfer news, Chelsea could intercept Inter?s proposed summer swoop for Esteban Cambiasso.
The Argentine is set to leave Real Madrid on a free transfer and the Premiership outfit may offer the midfielder a better financial package.

Not Montero again!!
Juventus boss Marcello Lippi is set to drop his Coppa Italia rotation policy for Thursday?s trip to Inter.
The tactician has usually rested a number of first team regulars for Cup games but he?s named a strong 18-man squad today.
Lippi can?t afford to take any risks with Inter in pole position to win the semi-final after the 2-2 draw in Turin last week.
Alex Del Piero is once again available after he missed the Roma game because of injury. The only absentees are Alessandro Birindelli, Mark Iuliano and Mauro Camoranesi who are all injured.
The Italian champions will be keen to impress after their 4-0 debacle against the Giallorossi on Sunday.
"If we don?t manage to qualify then I expect us to be criticised even more," admitted Lippi. "We?ve won so much in the past that it is normal that people want to have a go at us."
Yet Inter boss Alberto Zaccheroni is also set to field his strongest side given the way their season has developed.
"Winning the Coppa Italia is our primary objective right now," insisted Zac. "I expect my side to take control of the tie if we play with character and concentration."
Julio Cruz may return to the line-up after he was suspended for the first leg. While goalkeeper Alberto Fontana will feature because of Francesco Toldo?s dismissal seven days ago.
Juventus squad: Buffon, Chimenti; Ferrara, Montero, Tudor, Pessotto, Zambrotta, Thuram, Legrottaglie; Tacchinardi, Conte, Nedved, Maresca, Appiah; Miccoli, Del Piero, Trezeguet, Di Vaio.

Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has confirmed the club is already working on summer transfer deals.
Several names are being considered, with Lazio defender Jaap Stam, Parma's Daniele Bonera and AS Monaco's Sebastien Squillaci high on Juve's wanted list.
"It's correct to say that we are actively working on upgrading the squad for next season," admitted Moggi yesterday.
Also in the frame are Parma attacking midfielder Alberto Gilardino and Udinese schemer David Pizarro.

Juventus will meet Lazio in the Coppa Italia Final after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against 10-man Inter. A Christian Vieri error proved costly for the Nerazzurri after an exciting 120 minutes of football at the San Siro ended in a 2-2 draw.
Having drew 2-2 in Turin last week, Juventus knew they had a mountain to climb in order to reach the final. Yet their start to the game was highly encouraging as their high tempo seemed to cause Inter instant problems.
Miccoli went close on five minutes when his glancing header almost gave his side the lead before Juve were punished for their first mistake. Adriano broke the offside trap, with the aid of Juve stopper Legrottaglie, to round Chimenti and give Inter the lead on seven minutes.
Juventus kicked off and again seemed to be in control of the game. A fierce Di Vaio effort from outside the area finished just wide, as did a dangerous Miccoli free-kick. Tudor then shot over the bar from a great position inside the area.
But Inter again threatened to score with one of their few first half chances. This time Vieri broke the offside trap but his low diagonal drive struck the foot of the post. They hit the woodwork again on 37 minutes through Kily. His hit and hope from outside of the box rattled the bar.
Yet Juventus got a deserved equaliser just before half-time. A Miccoli shot was rebounded into the path of Tudor who slotted home from close range. That would be the Croatian?s last contribution, because of injury, as he was immediately replaced by Trezeguet.
The second half had far fewer chances but plenty of controversy. Having put on Nedved and Del Piero, Juve searched for a crucial second away goal. That job was made easier by the 66th minute dismissal of Cordoba. The Colombian hacked down Nedved who was converging towards goal.
The home side should then have been handed a clear penalty after Montero seemed to bring down Emre. Yet the referee incredibly waved play on much to the anger of the Inter players and the San Siro faithful. They were even more upset six minutes later when Del Piero nodded home a Miccoli corner. Inter 1 Juventus 2.
With a man advantage, Juve were knocking the ball around at ease but Inter kept fighting on. That passion and commitment was rewarded in injury time as Adani netted a scruffy goal to equalise with literally seconds remaining.
Juventus had the better of extra time as players from both sides visibly tired. Legrottaglie, Miccoli, Appiah and Nedved all had decent efforts. Even if the most dangerous effort in the silver goal period belonged to Adani. He thought he?d headed his side into the final but Del Piero cleared off the line.
Penalties inevitably followed where every player scored apart from Vieri. He took Inter?s final kick but Chimenti dived to his left to save. Miccoli slotted home the crucial spot-kick with class to set up a final against Lazio.

AS Monaco trainer Didier Deschamps is being linked with a move to Juventus.
The former Juve midfielder could make the switch to Turin as Juve coach Marcello Lippi's successor in the summer.
If Lippi accepts an offer to takeover from Giovanni Trapattoni as Italy trainer after Euro2004, the Juve board has Deschamps high on their list of possible replacements.
Deschamps' Monaco contract expires in 2005 and he has refused to discuss a new extension. Monaco's cash problems have also restricted his spending power in the transfer market and forced the ex-Chelsea favourite to consider his future.

Barcelona have made contact with Juventus about the availability of World Player of the Year Pavel Nedved.
The Czech Republic ace is the galactico that Barca president Joan Laporta is prepared to spend the majority of his £25 million summer transfer budget on.
Preliminary talks have already taken place and Laporta has been told any deal would hinge on the Spanish giants sacrificing a major star in a cash-plus-player exchange.
The player Juve general manager Luciano Moggi wants is Carles Puyol and as much as Nedved is a hero to the Juve support, his age (31) and the club's disappointing domestic season means even the Czech's future in Turin is not secure.
