Manchester United have captured their first summer signing after completing a £1.5million deal for USA keeper Tim Howard.

Howard's arrival will cast the future of current keeper, Fabien Barthez, into further doubt after a mercurial season between the posts.

The gallic flare and occasional wild blunder has been the cause of great consternation for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Barthez' place in the starting line-up may well be under threat.

Howard, 24, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for the last six months after impressing scouts in the NY-NJ league. He will be unveiled to fans next month.

Despite holding a Hungarian passport, Howard chose to play for the USA national side and will play in goal on Thursday night against Turkey in the Confederations Cup in France.

And USA boss Bruce Arena is confident that his keeper will make a marked impression when he arrives at the Premier League champions.

Arena said: Tim is an outstanding athlete, a great shot stopper and is very quick coming off his line. He's got the full package."

Reds wait on Ronnie

MANCHESTER United will have to wait until the end of the month to discover if their bid to sign Ronaldinho has been successful.

The Reds face stiff competition from Barcelona for the 23-year-old Brazilian.

But the player's agent and brother Roberto Assis, who has met with both clubs, says that no announcement will be made until after the current Confederations Cup - in which Ronaldinho is playing.

"Manchester United, Paris St Germain and Barcelona are still interested in Ronnie," said Assis, "But it won't be until the final of the Confederations Cup on June 29 that we'll announce Ronnie's departure - or if he's staying at PSG."

The Reds are believed to have offered around £9.3m for Ronaldinho, a similar amount to Barca. And both clubs will be encouraged by news that PSG have just fallen deeper into the financial mire.

The Direction Nationale de Controle de Gestion, a body appointed by the French league to examine the finances of its clubs, has ruled that PSG's wage bill is too high for a club of its stature.

Embargo

PSG now face an embargo on signing new players - and have to sell by the end of the month or face further penalties.

United scouts watched Ronaldinho finish on the losing Brazil side against Cameroon in their opening Confederations Cup game.

The Reds are also involved in a race for the signature of Harry Kewell, with Barcelona also announcing that they have joined the pursuit, in which Arsenal remain favourites.

But Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain may have blown his club's chances by hinting that Kewell comes behind Ronaldinho in their list of priorities.

He said: "Kewell is a very interesting player for us. He is on our list but he is not a priority. I think he would cost around £10-11m, maybe less to a foreign club, but that is still more than what we would want to spend on him."

United scouts at last night's game in France were also keeping a keen eye on the African side's Eric Djemba and Samuel Eto'o.

Talks

Agent Willie McKay, who specialises in bringing African players to Europe, says that United are expressing strong interest in Djemba Djemba, and added: "The clubs have been in talks for a while.

"United have made their intentions clear and Eric is desperate to go."

United recently signed a partnership agreement with Nantes, and a £3m bid is on the cards.

McKay has also claimed that United are interested in a deal for Cameroon striker Eto'o, another player on his books and who also played against Brazil last night.

Manchester United will be back in black for the next two years with a new, all-black away kit.

The kit, which is made from a stretch-woven fabric for extra comfort, is black with white piping on collar and cuffs. It features a subtle houndstooth check pattern woven into the black material.

The man responsible for designing the United kit is Craig Buglass, Design Director at Nike’s European Headquarters near Amsterdam. “It does give you a massive thrill, seeing players like van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Keane and Scholes running out in front of 67,000 fans in a kit you’ve designed,” he says.

"A design like this is great to work on for us because it looks so strong. The all black kit will forever be associated with the Cantona era by the fans, but I’m really hoping the new kit for next year will rapidly become a modern classic.”

The players are also keen on the new design: “This strip looks fantastic! It’s going to feel good to be playing in such a strong-looking kit,” says defender Rio Ferdinand.

The Kit will go on sale to fans for the first time on 17 July.

Carlos Queiroz looks set to be unveiled as Real Madrid's new coach within the next 24 hours.

Carlos Queiroz could be following Becks to Madrid, and you could get your hands on the Spanish champions' kit now!

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has given his permission for Queiroz to take up 'the chance of a lifetime' and the former Portuguese national coach will discuss the finer points of the move with Real officials today.

United expect to receive confirmation of the appointment this afternoon, with Queiroz likely to host an official press conference tomorrow.

Although Mike Phelan will almost certainly be asked to fill the vacancy in the short-term, Ferguson is likely to look to appoint another coach with wider knowledge of the European game.

Past experience suggests Ferguson will take his time trying to find the right man and the identity of Queiroz's successor will catch everyone by surprise.

No-one predicted the arrival of Queiroz or predecessor Steve McClaren, who Ferguson recruited from Derby after an intensive search over a period of months during the 1999 Treble-winning campaign.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Carlos, too big a chance to turn down," Ferguson told the Daily Mail.

"But we won't be in a rush to appoint a new coach. I've been very satisfied with the job that Mike Phelan has been doing."

Queiroz has been hailed as a major factor behind United's defensive transformation this term and Real will be looking for him to do a similar job at the Bernabeu as the Spanish giants try to reclaim their European crown.

It was their Champions League semi-final exit to Juventus which proved to be crucial in the departure of coach Vicente del Bosque over the weekend, although, while surprised at the move, new signing David Beckham will welcome Queiroz's appointment after working so closely with him at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United officials have rejected out of hand any notion they could be about to launch a bid for Arsenal's Patrick Vieira.

The French midfielder has consistently stated he has no desire to sign for the Red Devils and even Ferguson has no wish to test that theory.

Instead, the United boss, who already has deals lined up for Sunderland striker David Bellion, American goalkeeper Tim Howard and Cameroon midfielder Eric Djemba Djemba, will be eager to discover the outcome of negotiations between Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho and Paris St Germain.

Talks over the player's future are due to begin today, with United hoping they will end with confirmation that he will accept an £11million switch to Old Trafford.

Don't think so.

For Beck, he have already make up his mind about going to Real, it is only when he will go.

For the coach, any offer from a CL club to be manager is rather hard to resist for any coach.

But I think the lost of the coach have bigger impact on Man U than losing Beck.

Tim Howard will have to wait until May 2004 to secure his dream move to Manchester United, unless he is granted a work permit by the Home Office.

The USA goalie has agreed a lucrative 4 year contract with the Red Devils, but has so far failed to rubber stamp the move. Howard is unlikely to gain a work permit as he has not reached the critera of having played in 75% of his country's recent international matches and is only third choice behind Brad Friedal and Kasey Keller.

http://www.planetfootball.com/images/playerpics02_03/usa/howard_usa.jpg
Howard left in limbo??

Howard is hoping to gain a Hungarian passport as he thought this would give him a route into England but the Home Office have confirmed that a work permit could not be granted as Hungary are not part of the EU. Hungary are looking to join the EU as a directive states that citizens of prospective member countriescan acquire the rights of EU citizens when certain critera are met.

However, the Home Office that the Directive will not come into force until the 1st May, 2004. If Howard secures his passport the he could be loaned back to Metrostars or United could delay the transfer until next summer, thus giving Fabien Barthez a a second chance to prove himself.

Brazilian striker Ronaldinho's potential transfer to Manchester United could be nearer to completion on Friday.

The 23-year old's present club Paris St Germain are set to resume training under new coach Vahid Halilhodzic and the first issue that the club must resolve is United's reported £13m offer for Ronaldinho.

The World Cup winner has been hunted by Real Madrid, Barcelona and United for weeks while Newcastle have also reportedly shown interest.

However, Manchester United are marginal favourites and have money to spend after England captain David Beckham joined Spanish champions Real Madrid.

Ronaldinho's brother and agent Roberto Assis believes that PSG, who had earlier said they would hold onto their star asset, are gradually accepting that he will leave the Parc des Princes this summer.

"Ronaldinho would be happy to play for Manchester United," said Assis, who has been the player's guardian since their father died when Ronaldinho was eight.

"Every good player wants to join a team like them and we are happy that they have shown an interest in him.

"We will talk with PSG and I think he will leave. The situation is fairly straightforward now that Brazil are out of the Confederations Cup.

"I expect the talks to last until Friday."

PSG, meanwhile, are in desperate need of cash even if they insist they want to keep the Brazilian on their books.

The Parisian giants had a poor 2002-03 season, finishing in 11th spot and missing out on a place in the Uefa Cup after being defeated 2-1 in the French Cup final.

As for the rest of them... Surely it's the other clubs fault, not United's? Leeds pissed about with Rio to make Risdale look good, the deal was done ****ing ages before he did actually sign.

Former Manchester United star Mark Hughes could be on his way back to Old Trafford as assistant to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Wales boss Hughes is in line to replace new Real Madrid manager Carlos Queiroz as Ferguson's number two.

Hughes has led Wales to the brink of next year's European Championship finals in Portugal.

But United have reportedly been trying for more than six months to tempt him back to the Theatre of Dreams.

"Alex has been working hard for a long time to get Mark on board," Queiroz is quoted as saying in the News of the World.

"He tried to get him in November but it was difficult because Hughes was asking too much money.

"United brought in Ricky Sbragia from Sunderland in the end and he is working with the youngsters.

"Hughes wasn't making it easy at the time to take him to Manchester but Sir Alex can't do everything.

"Sharing responsibilities is key for the smooth running of that club."

The 39-year-old, who had two spells with United in the 1980s and 1990s and won 72 caps for Wales, has three years left on his Wales deal.

But Welsh Football Association president Des Shanklin told the same paper: "We have to recognise going into management with United would be Mark's ultimate dream.

"Manchester United are the biggest club in the world and we would never stand in Mark's way if he wanted to leave.

"But I'm 100% confident that he will see out his contract with us.

"The fans would be mortified if he walked out on us now.

"It is not surprising United are interested in Mark, given his track record over the past two years. My opinion is that Mark is very happy with his arrangement with us.

"I spoke with him at a three-hour meeting on Friday and he's given no indication of a possible move to United."

RONALDINHO looks likely to be confirmed as a Manchester United player this week.

Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon will meet the 23-year-old Brazilian's agent Roberto Assis today for further talks.

Barring any hiccups, a £15million deal is expected to be concluded with Paris St Germain in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Cameroon star Eric Djemba Djemba is also hoping to clinch a £3.5m move to Old Trafford.

The hard-tackling Nantes midfielder is seen by boss Alex Ferguson as a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and talks are at an advanced stage.

The clubs have agreed the fee and Djemba Djemba is hopeful he will be able to agree a contract quickly.

The African, 22, said: "It will be a dream for me when the deal is done.

"I have a contract until 2007 at Nantes but I think Manchester United and Nantes will come to an agreement.

"I believe in myself. In the years to come I believe I will be a first-team starter with United.

"I am young and I want to prove to everyone that I can do it."

hope tat ronaldinho is as good as he seems to be...
frankly he didnt leave me a great impression during the world cup...the goal against england was a fluke, just like beckham effort against wimbledon yrs ago....

somehow,,,not many south americans had impressed in english football....the successful ones seems to be only ossie ardilies and maybe his counterpart ricky villa. But then again,,most south american will prefer the spanish or italian league where the mony is much much better.

06/30/2003. According to reports, new Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz is keen on signing versatile Manchester United defender John O'Shea.

Alex Ferguson's former number 2 has apparently recommended him to the club's technical staff.

The chances of United being willing to sell one of their hottest young properties look thin, however.

ManUtd.com journalist Ben Hibbs was first to speak to David Bellion after completing his move to Manchester United. The speedy attacker was visibly ecstatic at having put pen to paper on a four-year deal...

Welcome to Manchester United, David. How does it feel to have finally signed?
I am really delighted. When you are young you always dream of playing for a club like this. I am really happy and can't wait for the start of the season. I am looking forward to training next week and being a Manchester United player. It’s fantastic.

Your transfer seemed to take a while to happen, did you ever think you had missed out on the move?
This is life. I had four or five months to wait but it’s ok, I just trained hard and worked hard. It took a while but it’s done now so I am just really happy.

What are your first impressions of the club and the stadium?
It’s unbelievable. It is the greatest club in the world. It’s amazing to know you play for this club. I went to Carrington [United’s training ground] and it’s a fantastic training ground. I am going to do my best for the club.

You must be desperate to get out on the pitch…
I can’t wait! When you see this kind of stadium, you can’t wait.

Which United player are you most looking forward to playing alongside?
When I was a kid I used to like Ryan Giggs a lot. I like his pace and the way he runs. I used to watch the team on TV and now can I play alongside the players, so it’s fantastic for me. I’m looking forward to playing with everyone here - Manchester United have a lot of the best players in the world.

You have played as a winger and a striker, but what is your preferred position?
I feel comfortable as a forward because of the way I play. I like to score goals but I don’t mind if I have to play as a winger, a striker or just behind the striker.

You are still young, so what aspects of your game do you hope to improve on while you are at United?
The experience comes first because I didn’t play too many games in the Premiership for Sunderland. The tactical side of the game is important, but you can learn everyday. Even the very best players in the world have to learn every day.

You have played Premiership football, so do you consider that to be an advantage?
Yes, it has given me a little bit of experience. I started five times last season and I played in the Derby game [against Newcastle], but now it’s different. It’s different because this is a massive club that is known all over the world. I have to be ready and stay focused on my mind, on my body, so those are things that I am looking to work on.

Is playing in the Champions League one of the highlights of coming to Old Trafford?
Yes, it’s the best to competition to play in so I am looking forward to it.

And finally, do you have a message to Manchester United’s fans?
I am really delighted be here. I want to work hard and give 100% for the club and score as many goals as I can. I hope to see the supporters soon.

Cameroon international Eric Djemba Djemba is due to complete his transfer to English Premiership champions Manchester United on Thursday.
However, the midfielder will only be unveiled at United's Old Trafford ground when he returns from the funeral of his Cameroonian team mate Marc-Vivien Foe next week.

He is expected to fly to Cameroon immediately after putting pen to paper on a deal worth around $5m (£3m).

United had hoped to officially introduce Djemba alongside their French acquisition David Bellion at a press conference this week but those plans have now been shelved.

The Premiership champions are signing 22-year-old Djemba from French First Division club Nantes.

Djemba played a key part in Cameroon's midfield during the recent Fifa Confederations Cup in France.

Sources close to the English champions say the Cameroonian star is being signed as a long-term replacement for their captain Roy Keane.

Paris St Germain president Francis Graille has turned down an offer from Manchester United for Ronaldinho.
Graille met Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon in Paris on Wednesday to discuss the possible sale of the Brazilian striker.

But Graille said the undisclosed offer had not been high enough, and revealed that he had also spoken to Real Madrid about Ronaldinho.

"Manchester United have made us offers, but the deal has not made any progress," said Graille.

"We are also in contact with another club, but for the moment Real Madrid have the advantage.

"I spoke about it with [Real Madrid president] Florentino Perez again on Tuesday."

Graille has put a price tag of £31m on Ronaldinho, believed to be more than double the amount Manchester United want to pay for the 23-year-old.

The Premiership champions are understood to have already agreed personal terms with Ronaldinho, who is under contract to PSG until 2006.

But Graille claims Real want to sign the player in a deal worth £24m that would see him stay at PSG for another season before moving to Spain.

PSG's hand has been strengthened by the announcement that French football's financial watchdog, the DNCG, has lifted all sanctions on the club.

The DNCG had previously forbidden PSG to sign any new players due to their large debts.

But major shareholders, television company Canal Plus, have stepped in with a significant cash injection to help balance the books.

Ronaldinho's agent and brother Roberto Assis is still confident Manchester United can agree a deal with PSG.

"We are very calm, talks are ongoing," he said. "The player is not on the streets and he has proved his worth on the pitch so we will wait and see what happens.

"I am certain Manchester United will make another bid. It is important that we let the clubs find a possible solution."

Djemba-Djemba agrees Man Utd deal

http://www.soccernet.com/images/european/france/djemba_e.jpg

Eric Djemba-Djemba will be confirmed as Manchester United's latest signing this afternoon but the Old Trafford outfit are still struggling to push through their major deal for Ronaldinho.

Djemba-Djemba is in Manchester completing the medical which provides the last obstacle to his £3million move from French club Nantes.

The 23-year-old has already agreed personal terms and an announcement is expected this afternoon, although he will not be formally unveiled as he is due to return to Cameroon to attend the funeral of international team-mate Marc-Vivien Foe.

A statement from his French club said: 'Eric Djemba Djemba will play for Manchester United next season.'

'The English champions, Nantes and the player have agreed on a five years transfer for an amount of 5 million euros.'

The Cameroonian youngster is delighted to be linking up with the Premiership champions but is aware that some serious hard work lies ahead.

'Mr Ferguson believes in my potential. I appreciated his talk. He believes I can play in different positions,' Djemba-Djemba told L'Equipe.

'I have a good fighting spirit. He also told me he trusts me and I will have a lot of fun.'

However, hopes of making Ronaldinho Sir Alex Ferguson's third summer signing after the capture of David Bellion on Tuesday are hanging in the balance after Paris St Germain turned down United's initial bid - believed to be in the region of £11million.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon met his PSG counterpart Francis Graille yesterday but has now returned to Manchester to consider his next move as efforts to land the 23-year-old World Cup winner continue to frustrate.

Old Trafford officials are annoyed with PSG for attempting to conduct business in the public arena but with Graille claiming Real Madrid are willing to pay £25million for their star man, with an £8million down payment promised immediately, Kenyon has seen the price pushed increasingly skywards.

If he cannot push through the deal, it would leave Ferguson open to accusations of weakening his championship-winning squad.

The United boss knows the arrivals of Bellion and Djemba-Djemba, for all their potential, could not fill the void left by the departure of England skipper David Beckham.

Efforts to sign Harry Kewell appear doomed, which would leave Ferguson looking at a possible big-money move for Blackburn's Damien Duff

ERIC DJEMBA DJEMBA has vowed to put his stamp on the Premiership after joining Manchester United.

Midfield hardman Djemba Djemba, 22, agreed a five-year contract yesterday.

The vow follows his move from Nantes in a deal — first revealed in SunSport on March 11 — that could top £4.2million.

The Cameroon ace said: “My style of play is ideally suited to the Premiership because I am quite physical — that’s one of the reasons I got 10 yellow cards last season.

“But it’s much easier to get booked in France because they don’t get stuck in like players do in England.”

Old Trafford chief Alex Fer- guson only met his long-time target for the first time yesterday.

And Djemba Djemba added: “We had a good chat. He said he noticed a lot of potential in me and wants to bring that out.

“He also said Manchester United never make a mistake when signing a player.”

Sir Alex Ferguson could renew his interest in FC Rennes star Julien Escude as talks aimed at bringing Ronaldinho to Old Trafford labour on.
Old Trafford insiders claim Ferguson remains confident of landing the Brazilian World Cup winner from Paris Saint-Germain, but that he also may have Escude in his range.

Unired are understood to be in talks with Rennes over the player they tried to sign last summer.

Escude has already declared that he would be interested in a move to the Premiership and United are likely to get a more favourable response from the French club this time around, after having their £3m offer turned down a year ago.

As far as the Ronaldinho move is concerned, United are still negotiating with PSG and are understood to have improved their original offer for the player.

The Premiership champions are said to be ready to pay around £18m - an increase of £3m from their opening bid - but the Parisians are demanding £31m.

A United spokesman said: "There could be some developments over the weekend. We are still hopeful of making progress."

defence wise i supposed man utd is quite stable now and after signing djemba (hope he is good) and together with the original midfield there shouldn't be a problem there. the only concern now is a right winger and another striker (unless forlan suddenly becomes another RVN this coming season)

United to up offer for Ronaldinho

Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to prevent Ronaldinho from joining Real Madrid

Dominic Fifield
Tuesday July 8, 2003
The Guardian

Manchester United will make an improved bid to Paris St-Germain this week for the Brazilian forward Ronaldinho in a desperate attempt to prevent Sir Alex Ferguson's principal transfer target joining Real Madrid.
United's initial offer, worth about £15m, was dismissed by the PSG president Francis Graille last week. A spokesman for the Premiership club said last night that their interest continued.

The 23-year-old's agent and brother Roberto Assis returned to France yesterday to talk to representatives of Chelsea and Barcelona, with Ronaldinho anxious that his future is resolved by Thursday when he is due back at the Parisian club for pre-season training.

PSG are privately resigned to losing the Brazilian, though they hope to persuade him to scrap a clause in his contract which entitles him to 15% of any transfer fee should he leave the Parc des Princes.

Their first choice remains selling him to Real, whose offer is financially the most attractive and who intend to loan the player back to his former club for a year. But, significantly, Ronaldinho remains sceptical about that arrangement, having seemingly decided to leave the club.

MU's getting desparate...

MANCHESTER UNITED have agreed an official link-up with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo, while also sealing the signature of starlet Carlos Eduardo Castro Lourenco.

United agreed an official co-operation deal with Sao Paulo - similar to the one they already have in place with Nantes and Sporting Lisbon.

The Red Devils have now used their new friendship with the Brazilian club to seal the signing of one of the most highly promising players in the shape of their Under-17 star Carlos Eduardo Castro Lourenco.

Planetfootball.com can reveal that the the 17-year-old is a midfielder, known as Rincon.

He has plenty of ability and is rated very highly by Sao Paulo - where he played at youth level last season.

The player is called Rincon because he has similar characteristics to Colombian legend Freddy Rincon.

Sao Paulo are not yet sure when Rincon will be departing to begin his career at Old Trafford.

United's Academy director Les Kershaw, who has brokered most of the Premiership champion's agreements with foreign clubs - confirmed the news of the link-up.

"Everyone in the Manchester is impressed with the vision of the Sao Paulo," said Kershaw.

"We see sufficient potential here for the development of projects together with the Brazilian club and our Portuguese partners, Sporting Lisbon."

Sao Paulo's president Marcelo Portugal Gouveia welcomed the deal saying: "The partnership in will help them to continue with our strong tradition to construct great teams.

"We can continue the professionalism throughout our club."

Manchester United's attempt to sign Ronaldinho appeared close to collapse last night after Paris St-Germain rejected the Premiership champions' latest £15m offer.

For a while yesterday United's path to the Brazilian international seemed to have opened up as Real Madrid ruled themselves out of the reckoning. But that was before Barcelona re-entered the chase with a new offer of players plus cash.

United's patience with PSG is now wearing thin and they may now be ready to turn their attention to the Real Betis winger Sanchez Joaquin. The United chief executive, Peter Kenyon, flew to Spain last night, fuelling rumours that a bid for the young Spaniard, valued at around £12m, could be imminent.

Internazionale are also trying to sign Joaquin, but United look increasingly likely to enter the bidding if PSG do not play ball over Ronaldinho.

Barca re-enter fight for Ronaldinho

The future of Ronaldinho is set to be decided in the next 48 hours as Barcelona made a late bid to snatch the 23-year-old Brazilian World Cup winner from under the noses of Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The Brazilian star is due to return for pre-season training with current club Paris St Germain tomorrow - and a meeting has been set up with the team's new president Francis Graille.

The player's brother and agent Roberto Assis told PA International this evening: 'What is clear that we have a meeting with the PSG president in the morning and we will discuss it in the day with the interested clubs.

'I have not spoken to Real Madrid but I have spoken to Barcelona and to Manchester United.'

He could not confirm reports in Paris that Barca president Joan Laporta had submitted a new Euro30million (£20.8million) bid to sign the player from under the noses of United - who look to be favourites to land the player.

Assis who has been his brother's guardian since their father died when he was a boy, said: 'I have heard PSG have received an offer from Barcelona but I can not confirm it.'

Earlier today Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had appeared to retreat from the battle to sign the Brazilian - although he would only say that the player would not join the club this year.

He said: 'The question of signings for next season is now closed.

'Yesterday we finished the signing of (Gabriel) Milito and with that we have now completed the four central defenders the club needs.

'For that reason Ronaldinho will not come to Real Madrid this year.'

However, it has been reported previously that a deal could be struck to bring Ronaldinho to the Bernabeu next year, allowing him to stay with PSG for another year.

That deal, which might also include a down payment, could be attractive to Graille and incoming PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic - who had vowed not to sell the player when they took charge in June but have now admitted that the club's financial situation is worse than they had thought when they made the pledge to keep a player who is contracted until 2006.

A PSG boardroom source said earlier today that Barca had lodged a bid worth Euros30million - 90 per cent would be paid in cash with two more players moving from the Nou Camp to the Parc des Princes.

United are keeping their cards close to their chest despite reports that manager Sir Alex Ferguson has taken personal charge of negotiations to sign the player he hopes will replace David Beckham in the hearts of the Old Trafford fans.

An Old Trafford spokesman said: 'We are pursuing our interest in the player.'

Ronaldinho chooses Man Utd
Ronaldinho has decided he wants to leave Paris St Germain and join Manchester United, and is now waiting for the two clubs to agree a deal.
The Brazilian has told his brother Roberto Assis, who acts as his agent, that he has made up his mind.

Although the deal is not yet complete, it is the first indication from the 23-year-old that he has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford.

"Ronaldinho wants to go to Manchester United," said Assis.

"Now it is just a question of waiting for the deal to be completed. PSG have an offer from Manchester United and we are waiting for a reply.

"I have to talk with the PSG president Francis Graille because Ronaldinho wants the situation concluded.

"We are working towards that and now it is just a question of timing."

Real Madrid were linked with the player but have decided not to make a bid, while Barcelona and Chelsea are the other clubs believed to be chasing him.

I want to play for United, says Ronaldinho
Graham Hunter and Adrian Milledge
Friday July 11, 2003
The Guardian

Ronaldinho's protracted transfer to Manchester United took a massive step forward last night when his agent admitted Old Trafford was the Brazilian's preferred destination.

"Ronaldinho wants to go to Manchester United," said the agent, the player's brother Roberto Assis. "PSG have had an offer from United and we are waiting for a reply."

Although Ronaldinho had previously expressed a desire to play in Spain, only Real Madrid fit the bill. However, the deal offered by the nine-times European Cup winners would have seen the player remain with PSG for another season and the prospect of missing out on another Champions League campaign is unpalatable to him.

Ronaldinho failed to return to the French capital for pre-season training yesterday after his club refused to grant extra time off following last month's Confederations Cup.

Arsenal have had a third offer turned down for Seville's Under-21 international striker Jose Reyes, this time for £9m.

"It's not so much that we have rejected this offer, more that we are laughing at it," said a Seville spokesman. "This kind of money wouldn't even buy Reyes' boots."

The aggressive left-footer would fit the role Robert Pires currently occupies or as a second striker in Dennis Bergkamp's position, but Valencia have queered Arsenal's pitch by offering £12m plus their striker Mista.

Kevin Keegan yesterday wel comed back his Manchester City squad only to find that they had put on weight over the summer break - with Robbie Fowler's physique attracting the most attention.

Speaking at the unveiling of their new home at the City of Manchester Stadium, Keegan said: "I have a squad of 40 professionals and 14 of them have come back three pounds over- weight or over.

"Robbie is three pounds heavier than when he left us last season. But I'm not going to make a big issue out of this."

David O'Leary is taking an unsympathetic attitude towards Aston Villa's trio of foreign malcontents.

No one has shown any interest in signing Juan Pablo Angel, Alpay or Bosko Balaban, who were bought by John Gregory for over £20m.

"If the three of them fit into what I want then they could stay," said O'Leary. "But if they don't fit in, they don't play."

Denis Irwin and Paul Ince will return to the Premiership next season having each agreed a one-year extension to their contracts with Wolves.

Brett Emerton left Feyenoord for Blackburn yesterday for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old Australia midfielder signed a four-year deal.

Lorenzo Amoruso is also expected to complete his protracted move to Ewood Park today. A £1.4m fee has been agreed and the Rangers defender has passed a medical.

Sunderland's Tore Andre Flo has rejected a transfer to Galatasaray because he does not wish to move his family to Turkey. The move would have reduced Sunderland's wage bill by about £30,000 a week.

PSG await Man Utd bid
Manchester United have still not tabled a written bid for Ronaldinho, according to the Brazil striker's club, Paris St Germain.
United remain favourites to sign the 24-year-old, but PSG insist they have not made a formal approach.

"At the moment, we have only received written offers from Barcelona and Chelsea," read a statement on the PSG website.

"There have been many rumours suggesting we have done a deal with Manchester United, but we have not yet received anything."

The statement added: "For PSG, the proposal which would suit us better is the one from Real Madrid.
"It would have the advantage of being able to keep Ronaldinho for another year before he joins the Spanish champions."

PSG's statement was released following the news that Ronaldinho had been fined for failing to turn up for pre-season training this week.

The striker was set to re-join his team-mates on 10 July following a two-week holiday.

The statement read: "He is not yet here. He will, therefore, be punished. His attitude shows a lack of respect for PSG."

PAUL INCE insists Brazilian belter Ronaldinho will soon stop Manchester United fans mourning the loss of David Beckham.

United last night tabled an £18.75million bid for Paris St Germain’s Ronaldinho as Becks begins life with Real Madrid.

And former Old Trafford skipper Ince declared: “If United sign Ronaldinho I don’t think Becks will be missed too much at Old Trafford.

“He’s a ready-made replacement for David and if I was Alex Ferguson I’d pay whatever it takes to get him.”

United have offered World Cup winner Ronaldinho, 23, a whopping £60,000 a week AFTER TAX over the next five years.

And PSG will pick up further payments depending on the success he brings to the Premiership champions.

Wolves captain Ince, 35, added: “Of course United will miss certain parts of Becks’ game — especially his crosses, free-kicks and ability to pull something really special out of the hat when it really matters.

“He makes wonder passes, can see things other players can’t and forged a great relationship with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“But Ronaldinho is something else. He’ll give United an extra dimension.

“I’ve seen him a few times and he’s just a fantastic player. He’s got more tricks up his sleeve than a magician and unlike Becks he will go past players as if they’re not there.”

Like 28-year-old Beckham, Ince was shown the Old Trafford exit in his prime by Fergie. That was in 1995.

But the former England midfielder is adamant Becks will never regret his £25m move to Real.

He said: “If it turns out anything like I experienced playing for Inter Milan, he won’t want to come back to England.

“When you’re playing for United you want to stay there for life.

“I certainly never wanted to leave and I hated United for letting me go. But when Fergie told me he’d accepted an offer from Inter Milan, you know your time’s up.

“I left at the same time as Mark Hughes and Andrei Kanchelskis and there was an outcry from all the fans. But United still won the league again the following season.

“Going to Italy and learning the language turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever done and in the end I didn’t want to come back.

“I was ready to sign on for another four years. But my youngest son had missed 2½ years of English and if we hadn’t returned when we did, he would have been too far behind.

“But I’ve always wished I’d stayed in Italy. It’s the one big regret I have.

“It’s been a similar scenario for Becks because he didn’t want to leave United, either.

“I’m not saying Fergie was right or wrong to sell him. But Becks just has to put it behind him, get on with the job in Madrid and learn Spanish — and then his football will speak for itself.”

Ince is confident Ronaldinho can prove an instant hit at United.

He added: “When you pay millions for a player you shouldn’t be talking about giving them time to settle in and all that. Players like Ronaldinho can come into the side and click straight away — that’s something Fergie has always been good at.”

Ince and his former United side-kick Denis Irwin, 37, both agreed new one-year contracts with Premiership new boys Wolves yesterday. And he confessed it was the Becks saga — and the way the Premiership “has gone mad” — that convinced him to play on at Molineux next season.

He said: “I was playing golf with my best mate Ryan Giggs in Portugal last week and kept hearing how things were going crazy back home with all the business about Becks, Harry Kewell and Russian takeovers at Chelsea. Actually, we spent much of the round talking not about Becks’ move to Madrid but Giggsy’s silly bleached-blond hair!

“But I knew then I couldn’t just walk away from all that’s going on in the Premiership at the moment.

“It’s got to be the most exciting time ever to be a Premiership player.

“It’s going to be a massive thrill for me to captain Wolves on their long-awaited return to the top flight.

“Winning the first league championship with Manchester United will always be the highlight of my career. But next season will run that close if we can do ourselves justice and stay clear of the bottom three.”

Assis in shock Real claim
Adam Marshall*-*12 Jul 2003 17:31

http://www.planetfootball.com/images/playerpics02_03/france/psg/ronaldinho_closed.jpg

THE seemingly never-ending Ronaldinho saga may not be over even if the brilliant Brazilian eventually signs for Manchester United, after his brother and agent Roberto Assis admitted Real Madrid are so persuasive they could even sign the player after he has moved to Old Trafford.
It is well known that Real want the Paris Saint Germain star in their ranks next year, and Assis feels, after the capture of David Beckham, that nothing is beyond the Liga champions' powerful reach.
President Florentino Perez has lured Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Beckham to the Spanish capital, and, even if Sir Alex Ferguson does manage to fight off competition from Barcelona and Chelsea this summer, the Premiership champions would be well advised to ensure Ronaldinho's five-year contract is water-tight.
Real's current offer is attractive to PSG because it allows the forward to remain at Parc des Princes for another season, but this seems impossible after 'Ronnie' was fined for failing to report back for pre-season training.
"The offer can be good for PSG," Assis told AS.
"But nobody of Madrid has still been directed to us.
"I have understood that the person who decides the acquisitions in Real is Florentino, and if, this year, he has been able to sign Beckham from Manchester, I do not believe that next year he would have problems signing my brother if he is at United."
Meanwhile, Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell*claims that they have been outbid by United for Ronaldinho leaving the road clear for the English champions to land the Brazilian.
PSG president Francis Graille has said that no deal will be reached this weekend.
"The discussions will continue this weekend but no decisive step forward will be made before Monday evening," Graille leparisien

Howard to join Man Utd

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39269000/jpg/_39269739_timhoward203.jpg

Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of United States goalkeeper Tim Howard on Monday after the 24-year-old received his English work permit.

Howard is expected to travel to England on Sunday before undergoing a medical on Monday.

"It's great for me," said Howard. "I just need to get better and work harder.

"If I get to start some games, that's great. If I'm a reserve in some games, that's great.

"I'm so happy. It's been a long time, and I feel so fortunate. Not many people get the opportunity that's been given to me. I feel blessed.

"Obviously, the national team is a big issue and I need to be playing and getting better."

Earlier, Former Scotland international Mo Johnston, now an assistant coach with New York New Jersey Metro Stars, confirmed the departure of his side's keeper to BBC Sport .

And Johnston believes the signing of the US international is a major coup for United.

"He's a wonderful goalkeeper, tremendously agile, and I'm sure he'll be a success in England," Johnston told BBC Scotland.

Howard has been in outstanding form in America's MLS this season and was overwhelmingly selected as goalkeeper for the end-of-season All-Star game.

He polled more votes from the league's coaches than any other player.

The 24-year-old suffers from Tourette's Syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes nervous tics and uncontrolled verbal outbursts.

Johnston joined MetroStars in December last year as assistant to head coach Bob Bradley.

He made his mark in the United States as a player with Kansas City Whiz, helping them to the 2000 MLS Cup championship.

Johnston retired in 2001 after six seasons in America, having already played 15 seasons in England, Scotland and France.

Howard is due to link up with Manchester United on their pre-season tour of the United States.

United table new Ronnie bid

http://www.planetfootball.com/images/playerpics02_03/france/psg/ronaldhino-head.jpg

MANCHESTER UNITED have moved a step closer to landing Ronaldinho after tabling a new bid for the Paris Saint Germain star.
United had a bid turned down for the Brazilian ace last week, but they have now moved in with a new improved bid according to the Sunday People.
It is claimed United have offered ?16 million for Ronaldinho with the fee rising to ?19 million, depending on his appearances for the Old Trafford outfit and also the club's future success.
The 24-year-old is also believed to receive 25 percent of the transfer fee as his part of the deal.
United chief executive Peter Kenyon confirmed the club were hopeful of landing their top summer transfer target after tabling the new bid.
"Things are moving well and we are making useful progress," Kenyon told the Sunday People.
"We have made a renewed bid for the player and are hopeful we can bring things to a successful conclusion in the next few days - that is certainly our intention.
"We believe Ronaldinho wants to come to Old Trafford and that has been a motivating factor for us in pursuing him.
"It's now a question of reaching agreement with PSG but we are hopeful that will be done sooner rather than later."
United's hopes of landing Ronaldinho were also boosted with Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell claiming that they had been outbid by United for the Brazilian ace.
Rosell has admitted they cannot match United's bid and that they will not be able to match personal terms either for the South American playmaker.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope they can bring this long overdue saga to a final conclusion...

Ronaldinho cannot wait to be the first Brazilian to wear the colors of English premier league champions Manchester United.

"I am desperate to become the first Brazilian to play for Manchester United," Ronaldinho told Sunday's News of the World.

"All the biggest stars from the past and today -- like Pele, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and even Rivaldo wanted to be the first to play for United.

"But I want to be the first Brazilian ever to be a Red -- and I know I am going to be."

United are reported to have offered Ronaldinho's French club Paris St Germain a deal worth 18.75 million pounds ($30.70 million) to sign the 23-year-old World Cup-winner, who has already agreed personal terms with the English club.

"Today, Manchester United are one of the three best clubs in the world." Ronaldinho said. "Their squad is so good that I can more or less compare them to the (world champion) Brazilian volleyball team.

"There are 23 fantastic players at Old Trafford and so I cannot rest for one moment if I want to get into the side.

"Professionally, there could be nothing more demanding in the world than playing at Old Trafford -- even more so than playing at Real Madrid."

Chelsea and Barcelona are also still interested in signing Ronaldinho, according to media reports. ($1=.6108 Pound)

Manchester United have offered Real Betis €17million and Deigo Forlan for Joaquin, the player's father has confirmed.

Peter Kenyon was due in Sevilla to hammer out a deal last week, but the United want to finalise a deal for Ronaldinho before opening talks with Betis.

"Manchester United have not been watching my son so much this season to pass the time," Joaquin's dad explained. "They have come to sign him."

Alex Ferguson's brother, Martin, has watched the Spanish international on several occasions this season along with Mick Brown.

Joaquin has been aware of the Red Devils interest for several months and even went so far as to declare 'I will be better than David Beckham' as he attempted to push United into action.

The stumbling block could come if the Old Trafford club are forced increase their bid for Ronaldinho.

If the Brazilian is signed then United maybe unable to raise more funds to offer more for Joaquin, should their initial bid be refused by the Andalucians.

Joaquin returns from holiday on Tuesday and is expected to ask Betis president, Manuel Luiz De Lopera, to accept the offer.

MANCHESTER UNITED last night agreed to dump Juan Veron on Chelsea for just £14million.

Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson finally decided to cut his losses on the Argentine flop — exactly two years after paying £28.1m for him.

Midfielder Veron, 28, is the latest buy funded by the Blues’ new billionaire owner Roman Abramovich. The clubs have verbally agreed a fee and the deal could be done by the middle of this week.

Veron’s departure will come as a massive shock to Old Trafford fans, who expected him to emerge as United’s playmaker this season after the £25m departure of David Beckham to Real Madrid.

The South American gave the first hint he could be packing his bags a month ago when he was questioned on the prospect of playing in Italy.

He has enjoyed a love-hate relationship since his arrival from Lazio but has made 82 appearances, scoring 11 goals.

There were calls from some fans to sell him earlier but Fergie constantly rounded on those who put the boot in.

Yet the boss has now accepted Veron has not lived up to his billing.

The Chelsea deal means the Argentine has been involved in five transfers, worth a huge £76.2m.

Abramovich is desperate to bring a string of top names to Stamford Bridge and has swooped for £6m West Ham defender Glen Johnson and £6.5m Real Madrid ace Geremi.

But the Russian turned his attentions to Veron after becoming frustrated in his bid to sign Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids.

He is still trying to land Arsenal’s Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira and Inter Milan’s Christian Vieri.

United have been boosted by the news the Ronaldinho deal is on the verge of completion.

And they will also step up their attempts to land Real Betis wide boy Joaquin Sanchez.

United have already had one £11m bid for him turned down in the form of cash plus Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.

But the Spanish ace has refused to sign a new contract with Betis and the club are likely to accepted an improved offer.

Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho took a step closer to Old Trafford after his club Paris St Germain snubbed the only other bid from Barcelona.

PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic rejected the chance to take Argentine midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme and French centre-back Philippe Christanval from the Nou Camp.

That has left PSG with no option but to accept United’s £10m up front, a further £5m guaranteed and possible bonuses worth another £5m.

United are also expected to complete the £1.2m capture of American keeper Tim Howard, 24, tomorrow after he was granted a work permit.

Also we are chasing Duff as well, we want to try and hijack Chelsea bid. ;)

BLACKBURN ROVERS chief executive John Williams fear a bidding war between Chelsea and Manchester United could result in Damien Duff leaving Edwood Park.

Money-bags Chelsea are actively pursuing the Republic of Ireland ace, while Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer of the fleet-footed winger.

Williams have confirmed Duff has a minium fee release clause in his deal believed to be £17 million, and a fight between Chelsea and United could force Rovers' hand.

"Damien has that clause in his contract at a time when the transfer market was suffering," Williams confirmed." But that's the nature of the beast.

"The bid have come when we're trying to build a team.

"If that's the way it turned out, we'll have to pick ourselves up.

'Chelsea are an ambitious club who've made substantial offers. Maybe they'll go the extra to trigger the clause.

"If so, Damien Duff is free to talk to them. If it turned out that way, then it will be disappointing."

United are concentrating on their efforts on landing Ronaldinho, but having come in with a late bid to hijack Liverpool's move for Harry Kewell, The Old Trafford outfit may step in for Duff.

Duff and Kewell are of smiliar mould, meaning the Irish ace would be an attrative option for Ferguson but he may not be able to match the financial muscle of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Ronaldinho is expected to finally seal his £19million move from Paris St Germain to Manchester United this week - with Sir Alex Ferguson desperately hoping the Brazilian enjoys more success than his previous two South American imports.

News is filtering out of Old Trafford that Juan Sebastian Veron is set to leave for Chelsea, while Real Betis' claim Diego Forlan has been offered as a makeweight in United's bid to take midfielder Joaquim.

That offers a conclusive verdict on the impact of two men Ferguson invested over £35million in.

Forlan remains a popular figure among the Red Devils support, if only for the gutsy way he overcame a run of 27 matches without a goal after his arrival from Independiente.

Veron though is a different matter. Never has anyone doubted the Argentinian's ability but his performances have been lacklustre.

Ferguson himself launched a vicious tirade at questioning journalists at the end of the midfielder's first season at the club when it was suggested he was the main reason why United had lost their title to Arsenal.

Even though there was no marked improvement in his Premiership performances last term, the 26-year-old appeared to be a key component in Ferguson's Champions League strategy.

With David Beckham's departure and the arrival of Ronaldinho apparently signalling a change in Ferguson's tactical strategy, Veron had been expected to play a major part in United's push for honours at home and abroad.

Yet when the first decent bid has come in, the champions appear to have snapped it up, leaving Claudio Ranieri with the problem of adapting Veron's exceptional passing skills to the cut and thrust of domestic combat.

Coming so soon after Beckham's departure, it is inconceivable Ferguson would have allowed the deal to go through if he had not been assured of Ronaldinho's arrival, despite Real Madrid's late push to snatch the player.

There must also be the likelihood of more arrivals before the season opens, in addition to American goalkeeper im Howard, whose signature should be secured today once the formalities of his medical have been completed.

An experienced defender was hinted at by Ferguson at the end of last season and talk of a bid for Juventus' Lilian Thuram has again been mentioned, in addition to a move for Joaquim.

At least the conclusion of Ronaldinho's move should settle a few nerves among the United faithful, who have been startled by Chelsea's financially-driven surge to title contenders and Harry Kewell's curt rebuttal on the basis that their club is a declining force.

As ever in the fickle world of football, the fans need a sure sign disaster is not lurking around the corner.

I think that Solskjaer will temporary replace Becks on the right wing and Ronaldinho will play just behind RVN in a 4-4-1-1 formation.

It would be great if Joaquin comes over but after Ronaldinho is signed, then there might be not enough money to get Joaquin, unless Veron is sold. I don't think Betis will be interested in Forlan.

Ronaldinho is not a natural rite winger....and I believe Man Utd has a lot of strikers already....with RVN, Forlan, Solskjaer and now Bellion.

U.S. national team goalie Tim Howard joined Manchester United on Monday, becoming the first Major League Soccer player to sign with the English Premier League champions.

Howard agreed to a four-year contract with Manchester United, leaving the MLS MetroStars after six seasons.

The 24-year-old goalie left Sunday for England, but will be back in the United States for Manchester United's tour later this month. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder from New Jersey made nine appearances for the U.S. team, with three shutouts and a 0.63 goals-against average.

"Players work hard every day for the hope to have this kind of opportunity," Howard said.

The timing seems right, too. Howard should step right in for starting United goalie Fabien Barthez.

Barthez, along with fellow Frenchman Mikael Silvestre and Eic Djemba-Djemba of Cameroon, will miss the U.S. tour to take extra time off following international commitments.

"Not only is this an exciting day for Tim, but it is for everyone connected with American soccer as Tim will be participating with the highest-profile club in the world," said Howard's agent, Dan Segal.

Howard will be the third U.S national team goalie in the Premier League, joining Kasey Keller of Tottenham and Brad Friedel of Blackburn.

i believe fergie targeted ronnie to let him play either on the right, left or partner RVN whenever the situation needed. remember how the brazilian coach used the 3-R in world cup. apart from ronaldo, rivaldo and ronnie just rotated among themselve to take turn partner ronaldo in attack while the attack just played behind the two.

Manchester United are flying in the Brazilian World Cup player Kleberson today after agreeing a £5m deal with Atletico Paranaense last night.

Kleberson, a close friend of another Old Trafford target, Ronaldinho, is arriving from South America to have his medical and sign after the cut-price deal was agreed in Manchester, leaving Leeds out in the cold.

The Brazilian delegation met United's chief executive, Peter Kenyon, shortly after the American goalkeeper Tim Howard was signed. United moved for Kleberson after the fee was established with Atletico officials by Leeds, and the bargain dropped into their lap as Juan Sebastian Veron was preparing to move to Chelsea. Kleberson will require a work permit but should resolve his personal terms since he is on a low wage at the Brazilian club.

Leeds were attempting to arrange a consolation deal last night by trying to sign another Brazilian, Rodrigo, who is on trial with them following his release at the end of last season from Everton.

It is a lucky break for United, who were not planning any move for him until Chelsea came in for Veron. The agent Pini Zahavi, who is working for the new Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, has spoken to United, however, and both they and Chelsea are confident that the two deals will go ahead, leaving the United manager Sir Alex Ferguson waiting on Ronaldinho's signature to end a frantic week.

Ronaldinho's agent suggested yesterday that the deal might not be struck until next week, which would disappoint Ferguson as the club are due to begin their tour of America on Saturday. The striker's representative and brother, Roberto Assis, said Ronaldinho will stay in Brazil until there is good reason for him to believe the talks are nearing a conclusion.

"I don't think that the signature will take place this week as Ronaldinho is still in Brazil and has things to do," Assis said, adding: "We are very optimistic. I am very happy for my brother and myself. We are waiting for the clubs to reach an agreement before Ronaldinho returns from Brazil.

"Things are progressing well but I prefer to be sure that things between Manchester and PSG are resolved before being completely happy. We don't want to wait too long before Ronaldinho comes back."

At a press conference to unveil Howard as his latest signing, Ferguson said: "We are obviously pursuing the Ronaldinho thing very intensely now, it's getting to that stage. It's maybe just about there, we don't know. We are very close."

Ferguson said he expects the 24-year-old Howard to challenge Fabien Barthez strongly. "The important thing is that Tim will be given an opportunity, but a coach can't guarantee anyone his position - he has to do that himself," he said. "His reflexes are very quick and he has a good presence. I'm nothing but impressed and his performances in the Confederat- ions Cup were superb."

Howard said his arrival at United had been a "fantasy". "Hopefully I have some good tools and I can exploit them," he said. "It's a fantasy really to even think you'll play here but when the interest came about it was humbling and exciting. It's the best club in the world without a doubt."

Howard is to be approached about raising the profile of Tourette's syndrome in Britain. Howard, who has suffered from the condition for 15 years, became involved in the US, where he was seen as a role model. Now the Tourette's Syndrome (UK) Association will invite Howard to its headquarters to discuss what role he might play.

"Tourette's syndrome is not a problem. It is part of my life," he said. "It doesn't affect me one way or another, on or off the field. In the match it doesn't affect me. I need to keep the ball out of the net and it will never affect me doing that job. Maybe there are times off the ball but even then it is not much of a problem."

Highly rated Real Betis midfielder Joaquin has insisted that he wants to stay in Seville despite interest from Premiership champions Manchester United.

The news comes following claims from the Spanish international's father, and agent, earlier this week that United had been following his son's development during the course of the season.

'Manchester United have not been watching my son so much this season to pass the time,' Joaquin's father explained. 'They have come to sign him.'

But despite Joaquin's alleged bust-up with Real Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera over the terms of a new contract - he has three-years remaining on his current deal - the 21-year-old is happy to stay at the club.

'Although the matter of my contract renewal is being handled by my father, who has kept me informed, the truth is that I want to stay here, at Betis,' said Joaquin.

'We are not talking about a weak team, it is a big club. But I am not excited by the idea of going to Manchester, nor Italy nor Argentina as I am very happy here.
'But the life of a footballer is short and I know that I need to earn enough money for the future so I can live in peace.

'If Betis give me the money that I find acceptable, then I will not look elsewhere because I repeat that I do not want to leave.

'It is going to be a difficult negotiation, that's clear, because I am not convinced by the money or the length, but we are going to talk.

'I still don't know when, but let's see if I can go into the pre-season with a new contract.'

United have reportedly had an an £11million bid (cash plus Diego Forlan) rejected for the Andalucian's services and also face competition from Roma and Inter for his signature.

Ronaldinho deal on brink of collapse

Dominic Fifield and Graham Hunter
Thursday July 17, 2003
The Guardian

Manchester United's protracted pursuit of Ronaldinho was on the verge of collapse last night after Barcelona re-entered the race to clinch his signature, apparently encouraged by confirmation that the Brazilian would rather move to La Liga than Old Trafford.
Earlier optimism that the Premiership champions were close to concluding a deal after another day of talks appeared misplaced when the 23-year-old's club, Paris St Germain, telephoned the Barcelona president Joan Laporta to persuade him against dropping his interest in Ronaldinho. Relations between United and PSG, already strained over the course of the transfer, appear to have sunk to a new low.

The PSG president Francis Graille, who maintains he verbally agreed an "acceptable" £23.5m deal with the United chief executive Peter Kenyon during talks in Geneva on Tuesday, is believed to have subsequently received a faxed offer of around £15.5m, significantly less than the figure discussed. He has apparently informed Kenyon that he has until close of business today to table an improved bid or the French club will give Barcelona the green light, despite the fact that their offer is for an initial downpayment of £17.5m, with a further £4m linked to future honours.

Officials at the Catalan club left the Nou Camp late last night in confident mood after an evening of frantic telephone negotiations with PSG, with the Barcelona director general Xavier Pérez Farguell intimating that Ronaldinho had had second thoughts about playing in Manchester.

"We were on the verge of agreeing the fee on Tuesday before United's bid came in and turned it into an auction," said Laporta, who had scrapped his earlier cash-plus--players bid in favour of a straight fee after talks with Graille in Lyon. He hopes to use the club sponsors Nike to guarantee the extra costs involved. "We can't compete with United financially, so the only way Ronaldinho is coming to Barcelona is if he really wants to."

That may now appear to be the case, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson fuming as his summer's primary target potentially slips through his fingers. United were still privately pursuing the transfer last night, but the lack of progress in the deal is understood to have left Ferguson questioning the player's commitment to play for the Premiership champions, having conceded earlier this week that "people can change their minds in football just like that".

Ronaldinho remains in Brazil with his wages suspended by PSG but, while United were offering him and his agent Roberto Assis more lucrative personal terms, Ferguson will be aware that the player has always privately insisted he would prefer to move to La Liga. Add to that the close friendship between Ronaldinho, Assis and the Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell and the attractions of moving to the Nou Camp - albeit to play in the Uefa Cup rather than the Champions League - become clearer.

There was at least some consolation for United last night when it was confirmed that the Brazilian midfielder Kleberson is close to agreeing personal terms with the club. A £5.5m bid was accepted by his club Atletico Paranaense and he should complete his move to Old Trafford today.

Ronnie to choose Barca or United
Adam Marshall*-*17 Jul 2003 07:55

THE moment of truth is set to arrive for Ronaldinho as the Brazilian must decide whether he wants to join Manchester United or Barcelona.
After Barca president Joan Laporta declared the Catalan side were out of the hunt on Wednesday, a dramatic twist in the early hours of Thursday morning has seen Paris Saint Germain president Francis Graille reaffirm his preference to deal with Frank Rijkaard's side.
When it looked as though United had done enough to land their priority target, suspicions are rising that 'Ronnie' will opt for a switch to Spain, much to Sir Alex Ferguson's chagrin.
The quotes attributed to the forward in SundaIy's News of the World were false, and PSG tried to contact their player throughout the night to discover his personal opinion on the matter. However, with Ronaldinho on holiday in Brazil, they were unable to speak to him.
United's faxed offer is understood to be less than the figures quoted on Wednesday, and Graille has reacted angrily, insisting Barca will win the chase if they up their bid by ?3 million.
"Insufficient," Graille said in response to The Red Devils' offer. "Manchester's suggestion does not satisfy us.
"I think Barcelona will win the placement at ?30 million.
"The things move again on all sides," he told Le Parisien.
Amid rumours that Ferguson, whose patience must be stretched to the limit, has privately admitted defeat to Barca, it will all come down to what Ronaldinho wants to do.
"The two offers are good for us and now the player is the one that must decide," Graille told Sport.
"All is not lost for Barcelona with him. Far from it.
"They have the same possibilities to deal with Ronaldinho as Manchester.
"We will see how it all finishes."
If the South American expresses a preference to join Barca, incredibly, a deal can be struck before the weekend.
United looked to have finally ended a summer-long pursuit on Wednesday, but Graille, who praised the "good behavior" of Barca's officials, seems determined to do business with the Camp Nou giants.
Barca had insisted they would not raise their ?27 million bid, but Laporta has been encouraged to match United's offer.
Other sources have intimated that United chief executive Peter Kenyon is concerned that Barca's offer has been played up in the media, in order to force the Premiership champions to meet PSG's asking price.
Kenyon has revealed that his valuation is ?18 million (?25.5 million), around ?3 million short of Graille's asking price.
L'Equipe claims there was real panic at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, with Ferguson having serious discussions with Kenyon.
The Red Devils are desperate to sign Ronaldinho, who is one of few world class performers that could replace David Beckham within their squad.
If they lose out on their top target, a late bid for Damien Duff cannot be discounted, but time could be running out as the Irishman is talking to Chelsea on Thursday.
All eyes are on Ronaldinho and, as soon as he can be contacted, the forward will choose his destiny.

SIR Alex Ferguson is understood to be furious at Manchester United’s failure to buy Ronaldinho from Paris Saint-Germain, but Peter Kenyon, the club’s chief executive, will make one final visit to France today in the hope of resolving the protracted saga.
François Graille, the PSG president, last night criticised United’s approach to negotiations and voiced his disapproval at their clandestine talks with Ronaldinho’s agent, Roberto Assis, with whom a five-year contract was agreed in May. According to sources at Old Trafford, though, Graille’s anger is more than matched by that of Ferguson. The United manager expected the deal to be tied up six weeks ago, but Kenyon has encountered fierce resistance from Graille, who has so far refused to drop his £21 million asking price for the player initially said to be available for half that fee.

Graille claims that United have agreed verbally to pay £21 million, but have yet to table an acceptable formal bid. “If they confirm in writing the proposals that have been made verbally, we should be able to reach an agreement,” Graille said. “But their written offers have always been lower than the verbal proposals.”

Under pressure from Ferguson, who wants the deal tied up before he takes his squad on a 16-day tour of the United States tomorrow, Kenyon is likely to raise his bid from £18 million today, but there is no guarantee that Ronaldinho will join United. The Brazil forward, 23, could yet join Barcelona, with whom Assis has also agreed a contract.

Failure to sign Ronaldinho would be a huge blow for Ferguson, who identified him as an integral part of the post-Beckham era. Alternatives include Joe Cole, of West Ham United, or Damien Duff, of Blackburn Rovers.

One acquisition that United should complete today is that of Kleberson, Ronaldinho’s international team-mate, who arrived in Manchester last night for a medical examination. A transfer fee, expected to be between £5 million and £6 million, has already been agreed with the midfield player’s club, Atlético Paranaense.

Ronaldinho's agent has given Paris Saint-Germain an "ultimatum" for the Brazilian's future to be resolved one way or another this weekend.
Premiership champions Manchester United and Spanish giants Barcelona are the two clubs locked in a £20m race to sign the shaggy-haired World Cup winner.

And the player himself has stated that he would prefer a move to Old Trafford, where United can offer him Champions League football and a title charge.

However, the Brazilian's future has become the centre of the summer's most protracted transfer story, and Ronaldinho's agent and brother Roberto Assis has delivered an ultimatum to PSG insisting that the transfer must be complete by this weekend.

Assis said: "It is a very complex transfer due to the amount of money that PSG are requesting, and also due to what the clubs are prepared to pay.

"We have given an ultimatum for the situation to be resolved by this weekend.

"That does not mean that Ronaldinho will stay with Paris. We are confident that the club will meet an agreement in the next 48 hours.''

While Ronaldinho may soon be heading into Old Trafford, it appears that Juan Sebastian Veron is in no rush to leave Manchester.

Sir Alex Ferguson is seemingly happy to part with the Argentinian midfielder, who was targeted by new Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

But even the Russian billionaire has baulked at Veron's wage demands, so any move to Stamford Bridge is on the backburner for the time being.

Marathon meeting for Fergie and PSG
Adam Marshall*-*18 Jul 2003 07:24

TALKS between Manchester United officials, including Sir Alex Ferguson, and Paris Saint Germain president Francis Graille stretched into the early hours of Friday morning, but still there is no agreement concerning Ronaldinho.
Barcelona moved into pole position on Thursday, after United had looked firm favourites to clinch the Brazilian international's success, and the Catalan club would have been able to announce his signing if the player agreed to move to Camp Nou.
However, Barca president Joan Laporta has apparently refused to deal with agent Roberto Assis, with Ronnie's brother preferring to stick to striving to clinch the long-awaited transfer to Old Trafford.
Barcelona also feel a deadline has passed with regards to getting the matter resolved, and seem to be actively pursuing other targets.
All this has led some to believe, even within the corridors of power at Old Trafford, that the Catalan*giants may not have the financial weight at their disposal to compete with The Red Devils.
Yet United know they could be playing a dangerous game, with PSG holding firm on a ?30 million asking price, and making no attempt to hide their discontent with the Premiership champions.
"In contrast to Fifa rules, they did not play the game and had negotiations directly with the player," fumed Graille.
Sources in the French capital indicate that talks involving Peter Kenyon, Ferguson, Roberto Assis and Graille lasted nearly five hours, and are set to restart on Friday morning.
Ferguson's presence illustrates the growing impatience on United's part, and their willingness to complete the transfer.
Apparently, United's offer is now only ?3 million short of PSG's valuation of the player, believed to be the amount The Red Devils will pay to Assis*for*his part in the deal. This is commonplace in modern football, as the Harry Kewell move proved, but Barca seem to be using that as an excuse not to speak to the player's brother.
Hopes are high that the two clubs will reach a compromise with a friendly match, with PSG owning the television rights, and this will help bridge the gap, although fitting it into United's perenially packed schedule may*be an issue.
It has been said many times before, but the most protracted transfer deal of the summer now looks set to be resolved, one way or another, on Friday.
If the discussions in Paris on Friday morning still fail to reach a positive conclusion, there is surely the prospect that United could pull the plug on the deal with Graille proving to be a difficult negotiator.
One wonders what would have happened if Laurent Perpere had remained at the PSG helm, and Luis Fernandez had still been the coach at Parc des Princes.
Fernandez has had a stormy relationship with Ronaldinho, while Vahid Halilhodzic has pledged that he would love to have the South American in his side - although this was always unlikely to happen.

I am thinking if Man U didn't get Ronny this season might be blessing in disguise.

Imagine end of this new season, Real want Ronny and Man U are force to sell Ronny to Real at a discount again.

Just like Beck transfer deal.

Ronaldinho's future still unclear

Manchester United fly off for their American tour tomorrow with question marks still remaining over which new faces are going to be at Old Trafford next season.

The chances of Ronaldinho joining the United ranks appear to have receded as Barcelona upped the stakes in the contest to sign the midfielder, and his agent put a deadline of this weekend on the transfer being agreed.

Meanwhile, the Old Trafford club have yet to agree personal terms with another Brazilian midfielder, Kleberson, who flew into the country yesterday for talks, nor a fee with his club Atletico Paranaense.

Ronaldinho's agent and brother Roberto Assis has delivered an ultimatum to Paris St Germain insisting that the transfer must be complete by this weekend.

Assis said: 'It is a very complex transfer due to the amount of money that PSG are requesting, and also due to what the clubs are prepared to pay.

'We have given an ultimatum for the situation to be resolved by this weekend. That does not mean that Ronaldinho will stay with Paris. We are confident that the club will meet an agreement in the next 48 hours.'

It's not just Brazilians driving Sir Alex Ferguson nuts - Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron's future looks clouded after his move to Chelsea fell down due to the London side - owner Roman Abramovich's billions notwithstanding - baulking at his wage demands.

But it is Ronaldinho's future that will be concerning United most. Ferguson has identified him as the ideal replacement for David Beckham yet United do not want to be dragged into an auction which could end up with them paying almost as much as they received for the England captain.

Barcelona have assumed pole position in the race to sign Ronaldinho from PSG with the Catalan side's £21million bid 'completely superior' to United's offer according to the French club's president Francis Graille .

Graille said: 'The offer from Manchester is not satisfactory to us. I think Barcelona will be successful at 30 million euros (£21m).'

The mood in Barcelona has changed from one of defeat earlier in the week.

Juanho Castillo, press secretary to Barca vice-president Sandro Rosell, said: 'We are still fighting to get him playing here now that we know Manchester have taken one step down in the negotiations.

'We are looking forward to having him here playing at the Nou Camp next season. His negotiators are very tough but we are optimistic we'll have him here. Just two days ago we thought our chances had gone.

'We are still talking with Ronaldinho and Paris St Germain, but you never know what's going to happen and things could turn around again if United come in with a new offer.'

That sly old fox Graille is still holding out for MORE!...

He said that many times, his words can't be trusted. I reckon its nearing the time we just pull the plug on the whole deal. Its getting beyond a joke, each day longer we stay interested, the more we have to pay.

Ronny can started to skip training and make SAF piss off, then Man U got no choice but to let Real have the price they want.

Ronny did said that he would like to play for Real in the future.
