Ajax superstar Rafael van der Vaart has denied having been contacted by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson with regard to a summer move to Old Trafford.

Recent media reports from England suggested Ferguson had spoken to the Dutch international, but van der Vaart says he has not been contacted by the wily Scottish tactician.

"Alex Ferguson has not been to visit me," van der Vaart told De Telegraaf.

Van der Vaart is reported to favour a summer move to Barcelona as opposed to Old Trafford, but the attack-minded midfielder has yet to make a decision on his future.

The 21-year-old has an agreement with Ajax that he can move on in the summer and it would appear van der Vaart will soon make an announcement on his future.

"I don't know where I am going to go right now," he said. "I haven't made a decision.

"But of course I am aware I have to do that soon."

Ajax are romping towards regaining the Eredivisie title from PSV Eindhoven and van der Vaart says he is happy with how he has performed this term.

"It has been a very good season for my development," van der Vaart added. "I have become captain, hope to be crowned champion and have overcome some bad luck"

more confirmation....or izzit fergie using him as smokescreen?....

SIR Alex Ferguson has hailed the "next generation" of United players as the heroes of Villa Park.

As United prepare for a May 22 FA Cup Final showdown with Millwall the Reds boss singled out the contributions of three players who he hopes will form a legacy for his successor.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave the left side of Arsenal's defence a torrid time, Darren Fletcher was industrious and intelligent in midfield, and Wes Brown was magnificent - for the second week running - at the heart of defence.

Said Fergie: "Ronaldo was fantastic. The boy is a marvellous player. He tired simply because he had a game on Wednesday, when he played 45 minutes on a soft pitch in Portugal where it had poured all night, and then didn't get back until five o'clock on Thursday morning.

"He had to come into training the same day because I was going to pick my team on Thursday. But he has done really well to have that kind of week and perform the way he did.

"Also Darren Fletcher had a marvellous game for a young lad of 19. I am very pleased with the younger players. Wes Brown is getting better with every game. I don't think anyone was ignorant of the fact that he needed games, and the previous Sunday at Arsenal was maybe when he proved to himself that he was back, because in these two games he has been wonderful."

Confidence

Brown has shown great mental resilience, as well as physical toughness, to come back from three major injuries and then weather a storm of media criticism since being hurried into the side to replace the suspended Rio Ferdinand.

"I don't think a person who has been out with two cruciates and a broken ankle can be full of confidence," said Fergie. "It's only performances like his last two that will help the lad, and I am sure it will. Since he was 15 years of age he has always been a natural defender who can spot danger, tackle with both feet, and is quick. He has all these attributes, but has had an unfortunate career - if you wish anyone a bit of luck for the rest of his career, it would be that boy."

Fergie enjoyed a first success in five games over arch-rival Arsene Wenger, and his tactical stroke of giving Ryan Giggs a roving role paid off at Villa Park.

United now face Millwall in Cardiff after the London club beat Sunderland 1-0 in the other semi at Old Trafford yesterday.

fergie got it right!!! :o :D

When asked whether Arsenal would win he replied 'I wouldn't bet on it' - his demeanour inferring that the Gunners' brilliant season might just be about to go the way of the nine horses which failed to clear the sixth fence at the Grand National.

Wenger's reaction was predictable: 'It's a long time since I've listened to what he says.'

There is always a chance of a lot of things happening.

As much as I dislike some dumbass arsenal fans in this forum, I respect the team and hope they win the EPL Trophy.

They deserve that.

But then again, when has 'deserved' ever determined a winner right?

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied speculation linking Manchester United with an end-of-season swoop for Ajax and Holland star Rafael van der Vaart.

Reports claim United are chasing the Dutch 21-year-old, but that Ferguson could miss out as Barcelona are emerging as favourites to land the midfielder.

Asked what was happening on the van der Vaart front, Ferguson stressed: "Absolutely nothing. You can run it [the story] if you like.

"I would be delighted if you did to keep the scent off."

Meanwhile, van der Vaart has backed up Ferguson's words saying he has had no contact from Old Trafford although he remains adamant a decision on his future will be made soon.

"Alex Ferguson has not been visiting me, and that's a fact," he said.

"I haven't made a decision yet, but I understand that I'll have to make one soon," he added.

Shrewsbury Town manager Jimmy Quinn has revealed that Gay Meadow youngster Sean Evans has signed for Premiership giants Manchester United.

The former Northern Ireland international has given his blessing to the move, which is reportedly worth a "substantial" amount to the non-league outfit, after the Under-16 midfielder impressed during a six-week trial stint with The Red Devils.

"We are delighted for Sean and hope that he goes on to have a very successful career with Manchester United," Quinn told Shrewsbury's official website.

"We believe that our youth policy is an important ingredient in the club's future and we are delighted that our faith is being repaid, not only by today's announcement, but by the number of former youth players who are now part of the first team squad."

Evans is a skilful left winger who will be sad to leave Town after joining the club as a nine-year-old.

However, the chance to move to Old Trafford is one he could only have dreamed about, and the prospect of learning from the likes of Ryan Giggs in the future must be thrilling the teen starlet.

Forlan has been hanging on to his place largely due to his 'United'-standard team spirit and attitude... very important to SAF.

For good goalscorers with solid team attitude, I had been hoping during the 2003 pre-season that Morientes and Forsell would have been targeted, as both are excellent strikers who have been badly treated by their clubs by being put out on loan despite their loyalty... and have kept their professionalism and character by performing well for their loan clubs. They would not cost over the odds too, and are proven to have strong character... top class footballing character.

RUUD van Nistelrooy’s fear that he may need knee surgery have been allayed after a scan on the Manchester United striker’s injury revealed no serious damage.

The Dutchman missed the FA Cup semi-final victory against Arsenal with a swollen knee.

The Reds’ medical staff are recommending van Nistelrooy doesn’t play over Easter, however, so he is likely to miss the fixtures against Birmingham City and Leicester City.

Louis Saha, cup-tied last weekend, is set to be recalled and Diego Forlan may also get a starting spot.

Actually both has never been in the first team at all..when all the guys r fit. First team is already fix unless someone leave..the only slot left fighting for is mid right.

Giggs --- Keano ---- Phil---Fletcher/Ronaldo/?

U see the giggs, keano n phil have already fix their place..only slot is right even solskjaer is ask to play that role..Scholes is play behind Rudd..so all place is taken..if no one leave, butt n forlan will never has a chance..not even when a new player comes in..even we get Robben, Vicent or Van der Vaart they oso wun hv much chance to play. Robben is already snatched up by Kenyon. And P. Neville doesn't really belong to the midfield. Fletcher's real place is in the middle and not on the right.

DAVID Bellion is set to start against Birmingham tomorrow as Sir Alex Ferguson puts FA Cup final places up for grabs.

"What we need now are more bodies back and I want to be able to give players some more experience before the Cup Final because you never know what might happen before then," the Manchester United manager said.

"I will be giving them all games in the meantime. We need to see someone like David Bellion, for instance, in a full match.

"David has done very well for us when he has come on as a substitute. He's getting better but he has to have that full match experience now.

"The place has been very buoyant this week," Sir Alex added.

"You are all more relaxed when the team is playing well and winning and I believe we have turned the corner now."

Yet Ferguson's focus on making sure the match against Millwall at the Millennium Stadium is a rousing finale to United's season won't be at the expense of Louis Saha.

The £12.8m January transfer window buy has had a fragmented start to his Old Trafford career. He's been cup-tied while United have progressed to the FA Cup Final and has been suffering with a calf and Achilles problem.

"Louis' injury is a lot better than it was and he will play up front against Birmingham," Fergie said.

"I will be giving him games even though he can't play in the Cup Final. I think it is important to have that freshness back in the strikers' department.

"When they are all fit I am back to that two from four choice again which is excellent for us.

"Louis has already shown us what he can do with five goals in seven appearances and at 25 he is going to get better.

"Diego Forlan didn't make it back from Uruguay in time for the semi final last Saturday but he's back now and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also fresh.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy hasn't done any training this week but he's been on the bike. He was still getting treatment on his knee until one in the morning last Saturday in a bid to get him ready for the Arsenal match.

"The fluid didn't come off quickly enough and I don't think he is going to be ready for St Andrews. But when he's fit again he'll have had a break which is good."

The United boss promised keeper Roy Carroll two or three matches after he decided to rest regular Tim Howard following the derby defeat to City at Eastlands.

The Northern Ireland international has kept two clean sheets and conceded just one goal at Highbury in his three matches and now he will extend his duty at St Andrews tomorrow.

But Fergie is delighted by the response from his former first choice.

"Tim has benefited from the break," he added. "He will come back stronger and better.

"He had been playing non-stop for 16 months and has looked fresh again in training.

"But Roy has played very well in the matches he's had. It would have been very unfair to leave Roy out after what he's done and Tim understands that."

Although Sir Alex is aiming to give all his senior squad pitch time before May 22, he will still have one eye on the title picture that may develop if Arsenal's double Euro and FA Cup body blow sees them crack up in the run-in.

Fletcher prefer to play in the middle but the only slot available is right...n he can play right too...thats y he is there...u think SAF will put butt there?? Ferguson asks Eriksson not to take Brown to Euro 2004
Reuters
Friday April 9, 2004 2:51 PM

By Jeremy Butler

MANCHESTER, England, April 9 (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has urged England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson not to consider defender Wes Brown for his Euro 2004 squad.

Brown, who won the last of his seven caps as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat by Australia in February 2003, has recently returned to form following lengthy injury breaks.

He was initially criticised after replacing the suspended Rio Ferdinand in United's defence in January, though has since made 15 appearances and performed admirably in the recent matches against Arsenal with United achieving a 1-1 draw in the league and a 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory.

"The boy is maybe going to need a break during the summer after going through what he has been through," Ferguson told reporters on Friday.

"You have to remember he has had two cruciate ops and a broken ankle as well, so he has been through a great deal. I just feel he needs a break.

"The nice thing is that people are talking about him that way. It shows you how far he has come on."

Ferguson added that striker Ruud van Nistelrooy would miss Saturday's premier league match at Birmingham, though the Dutchman, who has resumed running after being sidelined with a troublesome knee, could play on Tuesday against Leicester City.

Having a spare striker in the squad is always better than having a midfielder who can't hold up the ball, loses possession at the slightest contact, drifting out of positions and out of the game most of the time. The worst thing is he doesn't even have the physique to compete with the average player in the league.

But in my opinion, i can see that Fletcher can really develop to a player that has potential, if you see his tackling against Arsenal in the FA Cup Semis, it was really solid, somemore, i think his long linkup with Ronaldo is near perfect. Might become the next Beckham if he develops in the right way..

?? You sure or not? Scholes can disappear from a game much of the time, drifting out of positions and out of the game most of the time. and can't tackle for s-hit (more likely to tio card for yet another rash challange). So based on this, MU should dump him too.

RvN is a selfish player and can't outrun a drunk tortise. He's incapable of shooting a ball further than a sedated cripple and falls over at the slightest contact. He is drifting out of positions and out of the game most of the time, always tending to go offside. Dump him too.

Manchester United came from behind to put a dent in Birmingham's hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Birmingham looked on the way to a vital win after Roy Carroll allowed substitute Martin Grainger's 30-yard free-kick to go in after 39 minutes.

But United substitute Cristiano Ronaldo headed the equaliser on the hour as he got on the end of a Ryan Giggs cross.

And Giggs was the provider again 12 minutes from time, crossing for Louis Saha to head home United's winner.

United made two changes from the team that beat Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final, with Saha and Eric Djemba-Djemba replacing Ronaldo and Roy Keane.

Birmingham made the brighter start, with Robbie Savage typically competitive in midfield.

But they suffered a blow after 13 minutes when Stan Lazaridis caught his studs in the turf and collapsed in agony before being stretchered off.

Birmingham were not knocked out of their stride and twice came close to breaking the deadlock in the space of a minute.

United goalkeeper Carroll blocked a powerful shot from Bryan Hughes after good work by Mikael Forssell.

But Carroll was helpless as Savage's free-kick crashed against the bar.

Birmingham were making all the running and Mikael Silvestre had to make a desperate challenge to deny Clinton Morrison.

United had barely threatened, but Saha almost got in on the end of Paul Scholes' pass only to fire wide as he stretched.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40026000/jpg/_40026069_scholes200afp.jpg

Birmingham got the goal their dominance deserved after 39 minutes - but Carroll must take the blame.

He got both hands to Grainger's 30-yard free-kick, but allowed the ball to squirm into the net.

It was Grainger's last contribution as he was replaced at half-time by Jamie Clapham, who has just recovered from a bout of shingles.

Saha had the perfect opportunity to equalise in the opening seconds after the re-start, but he fired over the top from Scholes' pass.

United were upping the tempo, and Maik Taylor was forced to make a magnifient save from Saha's header from inside the six-yard box.

It was only a temporary reprieve and United equalised on the hour, thanks to substitute Ronaldo, who had replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer six minutes earlier.

He sent a glancing header past Taylor from Giggs' cross as United's pressure finally told.

And United completed their comeback when Saha put the champions ahead with 12 minutes left.

Giggs was once again the creator with another cross, with Saha getting in front of Birmingham' defenders to flash a header past Taylor.

Birmingham: Maik Taylor, Martin Taylor, Cunningham, Upson, Lazaridis, Johnson, Savage, Clemence, Hughes, Forssell, Morrison. Subs: Bennett, Grainger, Clapham, John, Tebily.

Djemba gave possession too cheaply though, he needs games to brush up his passing and awareness...

Ferguson salutes Saha

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised the contribution of Louis Saha after the win at Birmingham.
Saha headed United's late winner in the 2-1 victory and Ferguson said: "Saha makes a great contribution because he is a threat all the time.

"I thought that maybe he could have scored a couple more goals. He snatched at a couple of chances.

"But it was a good comeback. When you are 1-0 down here, it is difficult given their enthusiasm and commitment."

Ferguson added: "They were the better side in the first half but the turnaround by us was good.

"We picked up the play in the second half and there was a lot more sharpness about our game.

"We could have scored a few more. Once we had drawn level, we looked in a good position."

Cristiano Ronaldo was the catalyst behind United's revival, heading home another centre from Ryan Giggs just five minutes after entering the action to cancel out Martin Grainger's first-half strike.

Ferguson said: "Darren Fletcher does a good job for us and adds some balance on the right side.

"But when we needed to try and get back into the game, it was time for Ronaldo because he is the best at doing that."

Flair is good, but I think wat we need most now is a good crosser of the ball...

Since Beckham left, we only have Giggs who's a good crosser...

We're starved of service into the box for players like Van Nistelrooy etc to attack, resulting in his low scoring season.

Ronaldo can dribble, but he needs to work on his crossing.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to return to action for Manchester United in Tuesday's Barclaycard Premiership clash with Leicester at Old Trafford after missing the FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal and the weekend win at Birmingham with a knee injury.

Midfielder Roy Keane could also return after missing the game at St Andrews with what Sir Alex Ferguson described as "a few knocks" sustained in the Arsenal game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is slowly returning to match fitness after his long injury lay-off and played for an hour against Birmingham.

04/13/2004. According to the Spanish sports journal Marca, Barcelona President Joan Laporta has met with Ruud Van Nistelrooy's agent, Roger Lindse, to discuss a possible transfer from Manchester United to Barcelona.

Marca also claims to have contacted Barcelona officials who would not deny that the club is interested in acquiring Van Nistelrooy.

Kluivert's deteriorating relationship with Barca's board of directors means that the Dutch striker could be on his way out at the end of the season and Barca have already begun to search for a suitable replacement.

However, because Van Nistelrooy is a regular in Alex Ferguson's starting eleven, Manchester United may be unwilling to part with the striker, though no official declaration has been made.

Van Nistelrooy still has four years left on his current contract and agent Roger Lindse says that his client would play for nothing less than 5 million euros a season.

While Barca may be able to afford his salary, they may have to shell out truckloads of cash to convince Man U to part company with him.

Yup read somewhere that

Ruud van Nistelrooy can leave Manchester United for £28million. The prolific Dutchman demanded a clause in his new Old Trafford contract allowing him to quit for 42 million Euros should boss Sir Alex Ferguson quit - or United fail to buy big-name stars.

RVN
13-04-2004, 05:59 PM
Ruud van Nistelrooy's agent Roger Linse has indicated that the Dutch striker would be ready to move to Barcelona if Manchester United agreed a deal for him.
Tensions are thought to have been high between Sir Alex Ferguson and van Nistelrooy in recent weeks - after the Dutchman was dropped for the clash at Fulham in February.

However, it was not thought that van Nistelrooy's immediate future was in doubt - as he signed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford in January.

Reports in Spain, though, are now suggesting that van Nistelrooy's new deal could be the reason behind the latest speculation as the Dutch star is reported to have negotiated a get-out clause of just under £30 million.

Real Madrid and particularly Barca are now understood to have taken a keen interest in the United star and Linse told Radio RAC 1 in Catalunya that he had held informal talks with Barcelona supremo Joan Laporta.

Linse resides in Spain and insists the meeting took place merely because he was close by, but the news is sure to be disturbing to the hierarchy at United.

Further to his meeting, the Dutch agent has confirmed that van Nistelrooy would consider a move, should United agree a deal with Barca.

"It's crazy to think that he will be playing for Barcelona next year because he renewed his contract for two more years in January," said Linse to El Mundo Deportivo.

"I don't want to say that it's impossible because I'm not Manchester United, nor do I represent them.

"But I think it's a little bit complicated. There is only a possibility when the two clubs reach an agreement and until that happens, there is no sense in talking about it.

"I insist that this does not mean that van Nistelrooy doesn't want to go to Barca. Only that in the current situation, he has four years left with United.

"I can only act and speak to the player if the club give me permission and at the moment, I don't have that."

Van Nistelrooy is currently sidelined with a knee injury and is rated as doubtful for Tuesday's clash with Leicester.

It remains to be seen how United react to the speculation over his future, but they are sure to be anxious at the way the Spanish media are insisting that Barca will lure their star striker away from them this summer.

http://www.skysports.com/skysports/article/0,,7-1131185,00.html

I had been getting optimistic for next season. But this is distinctly worrying. I never believed Beckham was going last year until it was a done deal. If Ruud goes this summer, we've had it!! (My natural pessimism has returned.:(

What United shoud do now is finding the proper replacements for aging Keane and Giggs, and adding more strength in defence.

Not this stupid act in forcing the most prolific striker out, while we had conceded premiership title to Gooners, unless all the brain of United PLC filled wth water.

I hope there is no any conflicts btw Ruud and SAF, such as Beckham's saga.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has dismissed rumours linking him with a summer move to Spanish side Barcelona.

Spanish newspapers this morning ran stories that the player's agent Rodger Linse had met with Barca President Joan Laporta to discuss a transfer.

Van Nistelrooy told ManUtd.com: “I am happy at Manchester United. I recently signed a new contract and I wouldn’t have committed my future to the club if I wasn’t.

"I am enjoying my football, the fans are second to none, and any reports of me leaving are just wild rumours”

Chief Executive David Gill simply said “Ruud is not for sale.”

Roy Keane is to play again for the Republic of Ireland, the FAI confirmed on Tuesday.

The Manchester United captain met with Irish team boss Brian Kerr and made it clear he wanted to be considered for international duty again.

Keane has not played for Ireland since his row with ex-manager Mick McCarthy.

The player flew home from a training camp just before the 2002 World Cup and said he would not play for Ireland again while McCarthy was in charge.

McCarthy's resignation later that year sparked speculation that Keane would return under new manager Kerr.

At that stage, Keane appeared to be on the verge of agreeing to return.

It takes some courage after all that's happened to come back
From Name Bushman
Have your say on 606

However, influenced by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Keane eventually announced his international retirement, saying his main focus was on prolonging his club career.

Keane's return will be a boost to the Republic's World Cup qualification campaign which starts with a home game against Cyprus in September.

There may be concerns, though, about what impact Keane's dramatic return will have on team morale.

Keane, who has 58 caps, last played for Ireland in the final World Cup warm-up match in May 2002 when the Republic lost 2-1 to Nigeria.

Ferguson praises players

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for his players after their win over Leicester.
"They make you challenge every ball, I knew before the game our defenders were going to have to win the game for us and I think they did that," he said.

Ferguson also defended his team selection and the suggestion that Leicester were under-estimated.

"We have 60,000 people expecting us to win. In the process I have to give players a game who I feel need games."

The unlikely match-winner was Gary Neville, who scored only the fifth goal of his Old Trafford career.

"If anything it's only one a season, he'll be putting his boots away for the season now," Ferguson quipped.

Cristiano Ronaldo was also singled out for special praise by the United boss in his interview with the BBC after the game.

"He is marvellous, he's had a fantastic season. We have to make sure we give him a rest at the right time.

"The boy's got great pride, great desire. We have to rein him in and make sure he doesn't get impatient."

No Ruud swap

Barcelona will not offer Manchester United Spanish international defender Carlos Puyol plus cash for striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, according to vice-president Sandro Rosell.

"No, this is not true. There is no foundation in this story at all," Rosell told BBC Sport.

"But a top-class striker will be the top priority in the summer - and the best in the world if possible."

"Our coaches will only discuss who they want for next season when the current campaign is over,” he added.

Rosell also re-iterated their belief in the value Puyol.

"Carlos Puyol will absolutely be staying at Barcelona. He is a key player and not going to be sold," vowed Rosell.

Barcelona are slowly rediscovering their best form after a couple of seasons in the doldrums.

Under Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard they have risen to fourth in La Liga, just a point behind Deportivo La Coruna.

"Rijkaard will be drawing up his list of targets in the coming weeks," said Rosell.

"We are absolutely happy with the job he has done. We have gone from the bottom to the top and this is always good news."

I don't think United should ever even think of selling Ruud. Utd has enough money, it can get by without selling its best players. If a club as hard up as Arse can turn down offers of £50m for Henry, they shouldn’t be looking to cashing in on Ruud. And they are dependent on Ruud as Arse is on Henry.

When ppl talk about lacking ambition, it’s not just wrt to losing Ruud. There’s also united recent transfer foul-ups. They don’t have enough forwards in the first team and we’ll need to buy in order to replace Ruud. Are you confident in the board’s ability to get someone as good as/better than Ruud so our performance won’t suffer?

If Man U wins its game against Chelsea, and all remaining games, there is no need to keep clean sheets as it'll be ahead of Chelsea by 3 points (assuming that Chelsea wins its remaining games and loses its game against Man U).

Apr 15 - Manchester United will listen to offers for their South American duo Diego Forlan and Kleberson this summer in order to free up transfer cash for manager Alex Ferguson.

The United boss has decided that Uruguay striker Forlan, 24, is not going to make the grade at the club after just 36 starts in his 26 months at Old Trafford.

And FootballChannel can also reveal that Ferguson will reluctantly listen to bids for Brazil midfielder Kleberson after the World Cup winner's difficult debut season in England.

Forlan's decision to storm down the Old Trafford tunnel after being substituted during the 1-0 win over Leicester on Tuesday night has only hardened his manager's resolve to sell him for as little as £2million.

Ferguson had to send one of his staff chasing the striker as he headed for the dressing-room after being replaced by Darren Fletcher in the second half. It could now be that Forlan will never start a game for the club again after contributing little to United's season.

The case of Kleberson is more delicate as Ferguson weighs up what to do with a player whom he believes has the potential to succeed in England. Nevertheless, his season has been disrupted by injury and he has had problems settling off the pitch.

Although Ferguson is not keen to sell him, he will listen to any interest from other clubs and will allow Kleberson to move if it is in the best interests of the player.

United would have to take significant losses on both, given the depressed state of the transfer market. Forlan arrived in January 2002 for £7.5m and Kleberson joined United last summer for £5m.

There is no guarantee that United will be able to sell the players but if they are able to do business it would trim the club's wage bill.

Forlan is earning about £1.5m a year and despite a modest return of 17 goals -- 10 in the Premiership -- that would rise to nearer £2m a year if he were still around next season.

Kleberson, meanwhile, is earning a similar amount after arriving from Paranaense last summer. United supporters will be surprised to learn that Kleberson may be sold, but less so Forlan.

The striker seemed to be heading for Middlesbrough from Argentinian club Independiente when Ferguson stepped in and offered him the opportunity of partnering the prolific Ruud van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford.

Despite sporadic flashes of ability and the occasional spectacular goal, Forlan has never looked the part. The player is aware that time may be running out and it is understood he would not be opposed to a move.

Sources close to Forlan indicated he began to realise that his time may be up when Ferguson did not include him in his plans for the recent FA Cup semi-final triumph over Arsenal at Villa Park.

Ferguson prevented a clutch of players joining their countries for internationals in the week before that game but he allowed Forlan to head off to South America to team up with Uruguay.

Even when it later transpired that Van Nistelrooy was unfit to face Arsenal and fellow striker Louis Saha was cup-tied, Ferguson made no attempt to change Forlan's plans to arrive back in England at 5.30pm the evening before the game.

Forlan watched from the stand as a makeshift attack of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ryan Giggs propelled United into the FA Cup Final. They will be led out in the Cardiff showpiece by Roy Keane.

Police say early indications are that the player was not to blame
A teenage girl has been knocked down by a car driven by Manchester United star Eric Djemba-Djemba.
The girl was hurt as she crossed Rochdale Road in Harpurhey, Greater Manchester on Sunday evening.

Greater Manchester Police say that "no dangerous driving was involved".

The girl was taken to Manchester's Booth Hall Hospital following the accident. Manchester United say the player "stands ready" to help police.

Officers expect to speak to the 22-year-old star in the next few days, but say it is a formality.

They are investigating reports that the teenager stepped out into the road without spotting Djemba-Djemba's Lincoln Navigator 4x4.

Manchester United and Chelsea will watch Parma defender Matteo Ferrari against Juventus on Sunday as Sir Alex Ferguson joins the race to sign the player who could be the biggest bargain of the summer.

Ferrari, 24, who has recently won a place in the Italy team and is expected to make the Euro 2004 squad, is one of a group of promising Italians who are being auctioned off by Parma at the end of the season to service the Serie A club's crippling debt.

Despite failing to pay their players for the last six months, Parma have risen to fourth in the country's top division and Ferrari has become a target for Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan and AC Milan, all attracted by the possibility of signing him for around £3 million. However, the player tipped by Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni to be his country's next great centre-back, is considering a move to the Premiership.

United will be cautious about bidding against Chelsea but sources at Parma have indicated that Ferguson was urged by some of his best contacts in Italian football to take a close look at the player. United watched him in Italy's friendly defeat of Portugal last month and would expect to pay considerably less than the market rate.

David Gill, United's chief executive has denied reports that Rio Ferdinand could move to Chelsea in the summer but Ferguson will look to sign a centre-back at the end of the season. He tried to get cover for the position in the January transfer window after Ferdinand was given an eight-month ban.

Following the collapse of the parent company, Parmalat, in December control at Parma has been handed over to an administrator who has to sell players to repay some of the club's £140 million debt.

In January, Inter paid £15 million for Parma's Brazilian winger, Adriano, but the first payment had barely any effect on the club's financial state.

Though Ferrari was sold for £4 million when he left Inter for Parma in the summer of 2001, he has since made his international debut and become an integral part of his club's side.

When Parma host Juventus at the Ennio Tardini stadium tomorrow there will be a collection of England's richest clubs watching the defender.

Ferrari, who has eight international caps, has an Italian father but was born in Algeria, where his mother comes from, and grew up in Italy.

There is an agreement between Parma and their players to pay backdated wages in the summer and the club, who owe £40 million in tax alone, have indicated to the player and his agent, Giovanni Corci, that he will have to be sold.

The clear-out at Parma, football's biggest financial meltdown since Fiorentina went bust two years ago, will also see the sale of some of their other coveted young talent. Blackburn made an attempt to sign the Australian international Marco Bresciano in January, and agreed a fee of £2 million for a player who cost Parma £8 million two years ago, but the Italian side pulled out of the transfer.

DIEGO Forlan is intent on proving he has a future at Manchester United.

The 24-year-old striker admits it has been frustrating not getting a regular run in the side in the second half of the season.

He was replaced by Darren Fletcher with 33 minutes to go in the victory against Leicester on Tuesday.

Forlan shook hands with the Scotland international before disappearing down the tunnel, instead of going to the bench.

That led to questions being raised about whether the Uruguayan - a £7.5million buy in January 2002 - could be on his way out of the club in the summer.

Forlan is ready to dig in, however. "It is difficult for me," he told MUTV.

"When you get a run like I did before Christmas, then that stops and you have to come back, it is not easy.

"You play one game, then are out for three or four and sometimes you are sub, it is hard.

Pushed down

"You have to work hard, try to keep going and be ready for the next time when you have a chance."

Forlan has found himself pushed down the pecking order following the arrival of £12.8million Luis Saha from Fulham in the transfer window and the re-emergence of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after injury.

While Frenchman Saha has scored six goals in nine appearances, Forlan's opportunities have been limited to three starts and two substitute appearances - and he hasn't found the target.

It is a different scenario to the one last autumn when Forlan scored six goals in eight games.

His last senior goal came at Northampton in the FA Cup just days before Saha marked his debut by scoring.

For the moment, however, Forlan is focussing on helping United clinch an automatic Champions League place.

A rare strike from England full back Gary Neville was enough to overcome a gritty Leicester side and maintain the momentum.

"We need to keep going now," said Forlan.

"We are only three points behind Chelsea, so we need to fight for that second place.

"Although the performance against Leicester was not that good we got the three points, which was very important to us.

"We needed to win as Chelsea are dropping points and it was good we were able to do that.

"Leicester defended well and had chances. We took our chance and the whole game changed."

he should of been fighting for his future the day he got here!, not scoring goals for ages now. Let him fight somewhere else he certainly doesnt 'fight' enough on the pitch that's for sure. Nice bloke. Thanks for the goals v the scousers But move on, with our best wishes, and do well for a smaller club. :o

United to spy on Gilardino day 16 April, 2004

Parma youngster Alberto Gilardino will be watched by Manchester United scouts this weekend.

Reports in Italy today claim that the 21-year-old has caught the eye of the Premiership side who will assess his performance against Juventus.

The former Piacenza player has been a revelation this season after scoring 17 goals in Serie A so far.

That is especially impressive as he started the term on the bench behind Adriano – who is now at Inter.

United are interested in adding the Under-21 international to their attacking options for the new campaign.

However, the Old Trafford outfit will face stiff opposition from Juventus who are also very keen.

Gilardino admitted earlier this week that he wouldn’t mind staying at Parma but he could be forced out because of the club’s financial situation.

The Premiership giants are also believed to be interested in Gialloblu goalkeeper Sebastien Frey and defender Matteo Ferrari.

the man to replace Forlan ?

Manchester United are unlikely to recall captain Roy Keane and top-scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy for the match Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Keane has missed two matches after picking up bumps and bruises in the FA Cup win over Arsenal, while Van Nistelrooy has not played since suffering a knee injury in the league encounter with the Gunners.

Neither player has trained sufficiently this week and are likely to miss out, while Diego Forlan is definitely absent with an Achilles strain.

Kleberson (knee) is still missing, while Quinton Fortune (knee) is out for the season, while Rio Ferdinand continues his eight-month ban.

Manchester United (from): Howard, Carroll, G Neville, P Neville, Brown, Silvestre, O'Shea, Pugh, Fletcher, Butt, Scholes, Ronaldo, Keane, Djemba-Djemba, Giggs, Saha, van Nistelrooy, Kleberson, Solskjaer, Bellion.

Sir Alex Ferguson has fired another broadside at The Football Association ahead of Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes' disciplinary hearing.
Scholes is due to appear before an FA panel on Monday in relation to a charge of violent conduct following an altercation with Middlesbrough's Doriva in the 3-2 defeat in February.

The England international could be hit with a three-match suspension if found guilty of the charge with Ferguson holding a gloomy outlook on the matter.

The Red Devils boss has hinted that Scholes is unlikely to get the benefit of the doubt from the disciplinary panel and the Scot is on course for another run-in with The FA.

Ferguson has often had a strained relationship with the governing body and he has once more reiterated his belief that United are treated differently to other Premiership clubs.

"You know The FA and Manchester United," commented Ferguson. "There is a scenario for every club in the country and another one for us.

"We expect Paul to have a difficult hearing. Put it this way, I don't think he will get the same hearing as other players get."

Ferguson also insisted he has no gripe with Diego Forlan after the Uruguayan reacted frostily to being substituted against Leicester City in midweek.

Rather than occupy a spot in the dug-out after his substitution, Forlan headed immediately for the tunnel, seemingly upset at the decision.

But Ferguson brushed off any trace of friction between the pair by revealing the much-maligned striker had suffered an Achilles injury which will keep him out of Saturday's game at Portsmouth.

"It wasn't a problem to me," he added. "He was disappointed to come off but that is natural.

"On Tuesday he had an Achilles problem and wanted some ice on it, that's why he went straight to the dressing room."

Will be a blow to lose Scholes at this stage, damm it.

Reds go grey for U.S.A

MAN UTD are launching a GREY kit for their summer tour of the USA.
United haven’t worn the colour since their 3-1 defeat at Southampton in 1996 when players said they could not see each other.
At half-time boss Fergie ordered the team to change into a blue and white strip.
It is unlikely the strip (pictured) will be worn in the Premiership, but Man U are set to unveil a new home kit in New York on July 17.

The worrying thing is this is not a one-off. Lost to Wolves away, barely edged out a win against Leicester City at home. These are teams we would have easily dispatched a couple of years ago. We could have had 30 minutes of added time, we still wouldn't have scored.

For all our possession in the first half, we didn't create very many clear cut chances. We've really lacked a cutting edge, not just today, but for a lot of the games this season. And unless we bring in a couple of quality players, I don't see how that's going to change.

We can now only settle for 3rd spot now, grrrrrrr:mad:

Where the passing game?

The first half, most of the passes is half hearted. It kind of show the players are not that confident in their passing.

I only wish Man U can get back their passing game and not long ball from the defender to the front man. Midfield play are missing most of the time.

Manchester United have joined the chase for Parma starlet Alberto Gilardino.

The Under-21 striker has set Serie A alight this season with 17 goals, which has helped Parma emerge as serious contenders for a UEFA Champions League place - despite their precarious financial situation.

Gilardino, 21, is being increasingly linked with a move away from The Ennio Tardini and it seems that he may be moving on in the summer.

The player himself has insisted he wants to stay, but the club may be forced to part with their prized assets such as Gilardino, Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera to raise funds.

United have now confirmed to Parma that they will be attending their match with Juventus on Sunday - and Gilardino will be the man under scrutiny.

Gilardino, though, will also have options to stay in Italy, and United would have to work very hard to lure the youngster to England.

Juventus are understood to be the most interested club in Serie A and some reports in recent days have insisted that Parma have already struck a deal with The Old Lady.

However, nothing official has been announced and United will run the rule over him on Sunday.

Sir Alex watched his side succumb to a Portsmouth side fighting for Premiership survival on Saturday.

This is what the boss had to say of the 1-0 defeat at Fratton Park...

United Worked Hard
"We couldn’t have tried any harder. The players worked their socks off but it was a frustrating day for us. You don’t know how to analyse that type of match – we’ve had so much of the play, but once Portsmouth got the goal I always knew it was going to be difficult."

Scrappy Affair
"It was a lively pitch and very windy, tailor-made for someone to win it 1-0. It was a scrappy affair, it became that way in the second half. We got a little bit frustrated, we were crossing the ball in where we would normally take an extra pass and show that composure that experience gives you."

Portsmouth’s Goal
"It looked a bit scrappy to me. I don’t think we cleared our lines too well. It’s fallen nicely for Steve Stone. It was one of their only real attempts on goal. At that period just before half-time, we were playing some really good stuff. I think our best chances came in the first half as well."

Not United's Day
"When they scored the goal prior to half time, it was a great boost to them. They could sit in, play on the counter-attack, knock the ball up to their front two. They ran their socks off. They fought for every ball from our back two. It became a really frustrating day."

Minds On The Cup Final?
"No, nothing like that, no. If anything, we just got frustrated and should have shown more composure on the ball in the second half. But, when you are 1-0 down you go for it. We ended up with Ryan Giggs at left-back, one centre-midfielder – but that’s Manchester United."

Penalty Chance
"They say it was a penalty kick, but there was a crowd of people in the penalty box. I think Neale Barry [the match referee] is one of the best decision-makers out of all the referees. His integrity is 100%. You saw that last week when he inadvertently knocked the ball in for the Norwich player and he comes out afterwards and owns up to it. It’s fantastic – if more referees did that there would be more respect. I have 100% respect for Neale Barry as an official and I don’t think you can fault him for that."

Scrap For Second Place
"I think the game against Chelsea at home is going to be a very important match now."

Too ****ing right it is. :bounce: We were pathetic yesterday.

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY has rubbished persistent rumours that he's unhappy and ready to walk out on Manchester United in the summer.

The Dutch striker has been linked with a string of European clubs throughout a troubled campaign for United.

And speculation about his Old Trafford future intensified last week with reports that agent Roger Linse had held transfer talks with Barcelona's vice-president Sandro Rossell.

But Van Nistelrooy insists he would be happy to end his playing days at United.

He said: "I thought long and hard about the implications of signing a new four-year contract at United and I have no regrets whatsoever.

"I have said so many times in the past that I would be happy to see out the best days of my career at this club and nothing has changed. So to suggest that I want to leave is ludicrous - I don't know where these stories are coming from."

While it has been a disappointing season by United's standards, Van Nistelrooy is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and claims he couldn't be happier with life in Manchester.

"Naturally, we're all disappointed that the season hasn't been as successful as we would have liked, particularly in Europe and the league.

"But for all that I wouldn't change a thing. I live with my girlfriend Leontien in Bowden, not far from the airport. We have an apartment overlooking the hills.

"We really love it here. This is the place where we feel most at home.

"We like the English way of life much, much more than the south of Europe. I have no desire to go to Italy or Spain.

"There everyone wants to touch you, own you and approach you. I try to be as kind as possible to all my fans, but in those countries I know I couldn't cope.

"They want to be on top of you all day like they own you and that is not the life for me.

"Life where I live now is so similar to Brabant, the county in Holland where I come from. I am never homesick - that says enough, doesn't it?"

A few years ago silly things would unsettle the striker but now he is much more relaxed.

He said: "Hardly anything affects me or puts me off balance. I still read papers and I still watch telly, but I don't get wound up about what is written and said about me any more. I let people say and write what they want.

"Because of that I don't care when I read in the newspaper that I am going to Real Madrid or Barcelona after this season. It's all total rubbish!

"I guess because people read these things, they think it is true. Ten years ago they may have upset me, but not any more. I know it's not true and that's the important thing.

"I find myself far more relaxed with life. I read these stories, I laugh about them and I put them in the joke category. Be honest, would I have signed a four-year contract at United if I wanted to leave?

"Four years, doesn't that says everything about my future as a player in England?"

Van Nistelrooy realises you have to live with speculation when you make the decision to be come a United player.

He said: "It doesn't bother me because it seems to be normal when you play for Manchester United and you are doing well.

"People think it is normal to write stuff which is based on absolutely nothing. Honestly, it is garbage. Every word about Real Madrid and Barcelona is a joke to me.

"And if people don't believe the words that come out of my own mouth then maybe they should just listen to the views of people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. People who don't even know Ruud van Nistelrooy."

Van Nistelrooy returned home last week to open a new Nike Megastore in Rotterdam with former Dutch star Marco van Basten.

Hundred of youngsters came to see their heroes and, given the recent speculation, Van Nistelrooy wasn't surprised when the first question he was asked by a youngster was how long he would stay in England. Realising the Barcelona rumours had gathered momentum in Holland, he refused to duck the issue and simply said: "I have been in England for over three years now and it isn't boring me one bit. In fact, I think it is the greatest move I have ever made.

"I am looking forward to many more years in the red shirt of United. I'm at home there and I want to stray as long as possible."

Amazingly it was the first time that Van Nistelrooy and Van Basten had met and the United star said: "It was an honour to meet him. He has always been a special player and someone I idolised.

"At least I've been able to get his signature at last. I used to join all the other kids and queue for hours but it was always so busy and by the time I got anywhere near him it was time for him to leave."

Van Nistelrooy was left out of yesterday's 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth but he insists the recent rest has done him good.

He added: "It sounds strange but this knee injury gave me a little rest which I badly needed.

"It was not a serious injury like some people have made out. But now I have had the opportunity to take time off, I feel this could just give me a boost for the rest of this season and it could pay off in the European Championship.

"For three weeks I have been able to do real quality training. I did not have to focus on the matches.

"I was allowed to find my strength and work on other things. It has done me the world of good."
