Man U boss in summit with Glazers

Denis Campbell, sports news correspondent
Sunday June 5, 2005
The Observer

Manchester United's new owners will this week finally reveal their business plans for the club at a summit with the chief executive David Gill that could lead to his departure from Old Trafford.
Gill is travelling to Florida for two days of meetings with two sons of Malcolm Glazer, the American entrepreneur who last month bought the world's biggest football club in a £790 million takeover.

Sources in the Glazer camp confirmed that the talks in Tampa would cover every aspect of the club's future, which is likely to see United adopt a more aggressive commercial strategy in order to pay off the £540m in loans they borrowed to gain control.

Analysts say Gill will stay in his £900,000-a-year job if he is convinced that the Glazer family's plans to turn United into an even more lucrative sports business are viable. He is due to hold discussions with Joel and Avi Glazer, who will now run the club.
Gill's first encounter with his new bosses since they gained control will be tense. He warned publicly before the takeover that the Glazers' plans were 'potentially damaging' to the club because of the high level of debt involved.

Although the Glazers have pledged to work with United's existing on and off-field management, associates admit that changes to the club's senior personnel are possible. Gill, 47, is highly respected in football but he may have irritated the Glazers by trying to stop them gaining control.

Sir Roy Gardner, the United chairman, and his two fellow non-executive directors are due to step down after the offer period to shareholders to accept or reject the Glazers' £3-a-share proposal ends on 13 June.

If Gill follows them, he is thought unlikely to seek another job in football, as he would see any other club as a step down from United. An accountant who joined United as finance director in 1997 from First Choice Holidays, he is certain to receive offers from the City if he leaves. He is already a director of a hotel company.

Subjects under discussion are likely to include the position of the manager Sir Alex Ferguson, kit sponsor Nike's threat to pull out of its 13-year £303m deal and Chelsea's new-found supremacy.

Ronaldo staying put at Manchester United: Queiroz

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, is staying put at Manchester United, the English Premiership club's assistant manager Carlos Queiroz said.

"That is speculation. Manchester United is building an entire project around Ronaldo. Around him, striker Wayne Rooney and the younger players," he said in an interview published in daily Portuguese newspaper 24Horas.

Manchester signed the 20-year-old from Sporting Lisbon for five years in a deal worth just over 12 million pounds (17.8 million euros, 21.8 million dollars) in August 2003.

Queiroz added that age would not be an impediment to signing Real Madrid winger Luis Figo but he refused to say if the club has its sights set on the 32-year-old.

"I don't want to speculate about that. The decisions we make are not made according to ages, but according to the interests of the team. As far as I know Figo is at Real Madrid," the Portuguese assistant manager said.

The Spanish press reported earlier this week that Real Madrid had released the player, who has been demoted to the bench at the club since early April.

Queiroz, a close friend of Figo, coached Real Madrid in the 2003/04 season but was sacked after the club finished fourth in the league.

A one-time coach of the Portuguese national team, Queiroz is widely tipped to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson when he eventually steps down at Old Trafford.

Essien choose Chelsea,
Buffon wants Madrid,
Raul prefers Liverpool,
Even the already signed Mikel said he loves Chelsea. :s27:

Fergie to sign Van der Sar
World Cup star Edwin Van der Sar will be Manchester United's new goalkeeper for the start of the Premiership season in August - at the second time of asking. Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to return to the keeper he first tried to sign when Peter Schmeichel quit Old Trafford six years ago, only to be foiled by Juventus. This weekend, intermediaries have been setting up a £2m deal for Van der Sar, who only signed a contract extension with Fulham in January. His ambitions, however, are now firmly focused on United. The Dutchman was on his way to Italy in 1999, just weeks after Schmeichel's farewell party, when he was ambushed by Ferguson in the departure lounge at Amsterdam airport. He confirmed: "When he phoned me I really wanted to join United. But it was impossible at the time because I had already committed myself to Juventus."
Peter Fitton, Mail on Sunday

Van man for Man U
Manchester United's search for a goalkeeper is set to end with the signing of Fulham's Edwin Van der Sar. Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to go for the experienced Dutch international, whose contract is running out at Fulham. A £2m deal for Van der Sar, 34, is close to being agreed. United have considered and been linked with a host of keepers, including Spurs' Paul Robinson and Shay Given of Newcastle. But Van der Sar, who has always performed well against United, has emerged as the best option. At 6ft 6ins, he has the height Ferguson is seeking, in addition to experience and proven ability at the highest level. His arrival will give Tim Howard, in whom United still have great hopes, more time to develop.

Barcelona line up deals for Ferdinand and Cole
Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole are banking on a move to Barcelona to escape their troubles at Manchester United and Arsenal. Pini Zahavi, Ferdinand's agent, is understood to be at the centre of negotiating a move for the pair to the Nou Camp. Ferdinand is stalling on a new £100,000-a-week deal at United, while Cole has vowed to snub Arsenal's offer of a new contract.

Barca battling over Rio and Ruud
Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard and president Joan Laporta are caught in a battle of wills over Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Laporta, the man who came to power with the promise of signing David Beckham only to lose out to Real Madrid, now has Ferdinand in his sights. But Rijkaard isn't keen on the Old Trafford defender and has other targets including Ferdinand's team-mate Van Nistelrooy.

Buffon: Utd are just not big enough
Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has delivered a damning verdict on Manchester United, dismissing suggestions that he will make a mega-money move to Old Trafford because they are no longer considered one of the world's top clubs. £35m-rated Buffon put the boot in further when he said: "I would not even consider a move to Manchester United. They are not the club they once were. I am only interested in a club that is serious about winning the Champions League, so there is no possibility of me moving to Manchester."

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Fulham over the signing of keeper Edwin van der Sar for an undisclosed fee.
The Holland international has agreed a two-year contract at Old Trafford and will undergo a medical after returning from international duty.

I think Howard is the more likely back-up, and Carroll is sh!t, he made too many mistake for us towards the end of the season, not to mention the clear goal he gave to spurs.

Experience in goal is definitely what Man Utd need, Utd's defense needs someone behind them they can rely on. Thats what Van Der Sar can do.

van der Sar has arrived about 4 years too late...never fully understood why he decided to go to Fulham to spend his peak goalkeeping years... still a great keeper and hopefully he can operate as long as Shilton, Martyn, Zoff etc and give full performance for both coming seasons and more.

Cost cutting liao... until Glazer really provides his borrowed cash in transfer spending and not just make verbal pledges, it is all talk by a proven businessman with little integrity.

Seriously, I am glad to see Edwin van der Sar finally sign for Man Utd. If U can see, Holland is just playing similar styles with Man Utd in some ways. And I believe he will be good enuff to help out T.Howard to gain more experience in the way of playing as a goalie. Afterall, he's a winner with Ajax b4, and also able to commit himself with Juventus b4 going to Fulham. And Fulham is only the club he ever played and still cannot win anything and still always having problems in front of him when he's with Fulham. Fulham's defenders are making even more mistakes than I can imagine after these few yrs of playing with Edwin van der Sar.

Anyway, I hope to see Luke Steele into actions too. If there's a possibility.

well initially I thought it is a panic buy too.. but come to think of it, it is not such a bad idea after all. Howard has got the potential though not the experience... and he's young. So instead of investing on a big name, which is going to cost, we get van der Sar, and he can be the No. 1, in the meantime, guide Howard and hopefully in 2 years time, Howard is ready to takeover and continue.

well van der sar still prone to the occasional blooper... anyone i once saw him in a fulham match, he got the ball at his feet in his penalty area, an opposing striker(forget which one) go and pressure him, mr edwin try to be too clever and try to dribble past the striker, which of cos he failed and the striker pass the ball into the empty net... i could think of another couple more u know... but anyway, he's very reliable when come to making saves or crosses...

Errr... Got diff. opinions as U. Edwin van der Sar is not just good becos he's tall. In fact, what impress me most is he's good becos he's still quite agile for such a tall man like him. And even under pressure for so many yrs during his time for Netherlands, he is still able to be so calm or still be capping for the national team for so many yrs.

But I do admit that I did make some silly mistakes over the years. Did U guys notice, some of his mistakes also made by Sander Westerveld b4? Like letting the goal slipped through from their own hands and letting opponents to score by kicking the ball in through their open legs?

I am wondering, maybe sometimes, being tall still do them some problems no matter how agile they are, they might still face some problems...

A good Korea move?

Ernst Bouwes

Three years ago South Korea humiliated the stars from Portugal, Spain and Italy on their way to the semi-final of the World Cup, before the Germans eventually kicked them out.

Ji-Sung Park and Young-Pyo Lee celebrate Park's semi-final goal against AC Milan. (Photography/GettyImages)

Only three players of the squad headed for Europe as most of the others never left the Far East.

Those three travelled to Holland in the footsteps of their coach Guus Hiddink. Young-Pyo Lee and Ji-Sung Park went with him to PSV. Chong-Gug Song was signed by Feyenoord for 4m euros where he hooked up with Japanese star Shinji Ono.

Come 2005 the first two almost threw AC Milan out of the Champions League while the other quietly returned home after last Christmas. What happened to them in the meantime?

Song was the first to arrive in September 2002 and made an immediate impact. 'Song becomes hit' announced Dutch football magazine Voetbal International after his first training sessions in Rotterdam. Adjusting so well, coach Bert van Marwijk could not refuse him a place in the starting eleven in the next game, at FC Twente.

A rampant Feyenoord slaughtered the home team 5-1 with Ono and Song sensational in midfield. What a buy! As the months went by however, the form of the team deteriorated and so did Song.

An injury, picked up shortly before the winter break, put him out for a some months, after which he struggled to get back into the midfield.

As a right back he had an indifferent second year, which made some hacks wonder whether the real Song had sent his brother to Rotterdam after the summer.

The arrival of Gullit last year did not help him as the manager decided to make some tactical changes after the Van Marwijk era. As Song had never been able to pick up a language other than his mother tongue, he could do not anything but smile and nod at the pointers Gullit was giving him about his new role.

This complete lack of communication was the eventual reason that the club agreed to sell Song to South Koreans Suwon Samson Bluewings this January for half the money they had invested in him.

In a winning team football-lingo is universal and mere eye contact is enough to open an offside trap. When it is all falling apart, then coaches tend to rely on the players that understand what they want. Clearly, for Gullit, Song did not belong to that group.

Chong-Gug Song: Flogged by Feyenoord after initial success. (MikeHewitt/GettyImages)

In January 2004 Lee and Park were heading for the same track at PSV.

They had both arrived during the winterbreak the year before and celebrated the title, but until then never looked like world beaters from the World Cup.

At that time Mark van Bommel said in an interview: 'They are here, but that is all you can say about them. They have not made any progression. When you say something about some mistake they make, they smile and then continue making them. That is quite frustrating.'

Especially as the club had seen Lee mock Luis Figo several times in the World Cup game against Portugal, while Park scored the spectacular goal that sealed the end of Spain in the tournament.

Both had the potential to make it, but seemed to be lacking the necessary bravura on the pitch as well as in the dressingroom.

Yet Hiddink always kept faith in them. The foreign football world can be a lonely place when things are not going for you, but at least there was someone around who knew their abilities and would not let them down so easily.

The turning point may have come last summer. After one-and-a-half year of continuous assistence their translator Chung reached the end of his contract and left them to take on lives of their own.

He now says: 'Since they came here, both of them relied completely on me with every sort of communication, diners, shop visits etc. They did not do anything when I did not. When I left, they had to take care of themselves. To my surprise this transition went very smoothly and the interaction with their teammates and everyone else in Eindhoven increased enormously. They even speak some Dutch now! If only I'd left a bit earlier.'

It is even rumoured they eat spaghetti at the PSV training centre De Herdgang daily, while to the average Korean Chinese food is already as exotic as it comes.

Now they have really settled, their performances have improved dramatically.

As a left-back Young-Pyo Lee has rarely missed a game since he came to PSV. At first he stuck to his defensive job, but at the start of the 2004/5 season he began marches along the flank.

His runs into opponents' half have resulted in goals against Ajax, Feyenoord and FC Twente.

Ji-Sung Park scored the first against AC Milan in Eindhoven while Lee created the second for Cocu to head home. Apparently, Lee takes his strength from religion which he discusses with several PSV teammates.

Ji-Sung Park makes a nice duo with his countryman, but is less interested in heavenly matters. His favorite book is the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

Hiddink: Father figure to PSV's twin, and successful, Korean imports. (MatthewAshton/Empics)

His stuttering start at PSV was mainly due to a hidden knee injury and the lack of rest after the World Cup. Both players are completely fit now in body and mind. PSV reaped the fruits of patience during the knock-out stages of the Champions League when both South Koreans kept running at their opponents and never tired.

Recently PSV took the option on Lee's contract which means he will be staying until 2007. The 27-year old is said however to be mature enough for a move to another European competition like the Premier League.

Not so Ji-Sung Park, four years younger then Lee, who seems happy to extend his time at PSV for several years. He is still very close to Guus Hiddink, a sort of a father figure to him, while his real father is around too.

He has become quite the celebrity in Eindhoven as well. The city embraces its Koreans as never before.

MANCHESTER United will be allowed to speak to PSV star Ji-Sung Park after the Dutch club confirmed United had made an approach for the midfielder.

PSV do not want to lose the services of the 24-year-old South Korea international but admit they cannot stop Park moving if he wants to.

Club spokesman Pedro Salazer-Hewitt told the Daily Mail: "The only person who will decide his future is Park.

"We want to keep him, as we want to keep all our best players, but we know the system and we know that if another club make an official offer it's a possibility we will lose the player.

"United have officially asked about Park and the player has been informed."

Don't be so pessimistic it may turrn out well. Infact I do not understand why people wanted to have a break away team in FC United. The attachment is totally different. I can on;y say that those people suggesting to the FC United are trying to earn big bucks from it. If we stop supporting Glazers then ManU will definately be destroy. If we support him chances is that we can see a even better ManU as he should be able to see the better the team plays the better the returns will be. As a businessman myself i do not see his purchase as anything wrong but i feels that the supports are making too much noise over it. Once an ManU fans always a ManU fans. Glory ManU!!!

EXCLUSIVE: BRING ME THE TITLE ..OR ELSE
Glazer lays it on the line to Fergie
By David McDonnell

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has been told by Manchester United's new owner Malcolm Glazer he must recapture the Premiership title next season - or face an uncertain future.

United chief executive David Gill met with the Glazers in Florida yesterday and was told they expect an immediate return on their £790million purchase of the world's most famous club.

Having borrowed almost £600m to finance his takeover, a debt which has left him with interest repayments of around £35m a year, Glazer is anxious to recoup money as quickly as possible.

And the American billionaire knows success in the Premiership and Champions League, restoring United to the top of world football, is the way to the lucrative marketing contracts he is after.

Although Fergie's immediate future has been assured by Glazer, the United boss is now on a one-year, rolling contract renewable after every subsequent campaign.

But failure to win the domestic title for the third season running, combined with another early exit

from the Champions League, could well see Fergie's glittering 19-year reign come to an end.

There is precious little money available for new signings, despite the pre-takeover claim from the Glazer camp Fergie would be given at least £20m to spend each summer.

They paid £2m for Fulham's Edwin Van der Sar because the £8m price tag on Shay Given was too high - and it is why they are looking at the likes of PSV midfielder Ji-Sung Park.

The Glazers yesterday took strategic and overall control of the day-to-day running of United when Malcolm's sons Joel, Avram and Brian were appointed to the board.

No quotes. Nothing substantiated. No words from Glazer.

But if true, Glazer can f*ck off, He creates the debt, then demands the club get him out of it... mmmmmmm if this quote is true, then, well, the future may not be all that bright, this sort of logic could cripple the club. :(

OFT to consider Glazer takeover?

The Government believes the Office of Fair Trading will wish to consider whether the takeover of Manchester United by the US billionaire Malcolm Glazer raises any competition concerns, it emerged today, amid new concerns about the future of the club.
Junior Government minister Lord Davies of Oldham made this clear in written House of Lords answers to Labour peer Lord Morris of Manchester.

But he added that ministers could intervene only in cases that raised specific 'public interest considerations'.

Lord Morris, who said he was 'deeply concerned' about the situation, had asked whether the Government proposed to take any action and whether ministers were inquiring into the extent to which the interests of stakeholders in Manchester United were being protected.

Lord Davies told him: 'The Government are committed to ensuring that all football clubs are run in the best possible way and that they remain a focal point of their local community, including for the clubs' supporters.

'However, ownership is a matter for the football authorities and clubs. In the case of Manchester United, it was for shareholders to decide on the merits of takeover proposals and independent competition authorities will look at the effects of any deal on competition.

'The Office of Fair Trading will wish to consider whether the proposed takeover raises any competition concerns. Such consideration is a matter for the independent competition authorities.

'Ministers may only intervene in cases that raise specific `public interest considerations' as defined in the Enterprise Act 2002, presently relating to mergers in the defence sector and the media.

'While the Government have looked at football clubs, there are no plans to introduce an additional public interest consideration concerning football.'

Lord Morris commented: 'If football is the beautiful game, Glazer is not my nominee for role model. What causes me very deep concern is the extent to which the club was purchased with borrowed money.

'This will place new burdens on the club. The stakeholders are asking how can it be that one day their club was in profit and the next day it was the most indebted football club in the world?'

A spokesman for the Office of Fair Trading said: 'We are not currently looking at the case as it has not been notified to us so far.

'We can look at the competition aspects of all mergers where the UK turnover is more than £70million or together the merged parties have a 25% share of the market.'

Nothing wrong in signing stars, nothing wrong as long as u have the wealth of Milan or Inter or Juv have, and dun do that fuccking chels way, by all means. No one will say bad things about ti as long as we are 光名正大.

but, I am even more proud with our players like Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Gary&Phil, Butt, Peter Schemeicher, Ole. Why? Who knew what hell are them before they played for us? And who dun know them now? I prefer it this way, and I seriously think these players are more loyal to the club.

Not true lah... Sometimes, it's better to understand English themselves. If they duno the languauge themselves and always depend on translator might have problem. Vicente snub move to United. :o

United make move for winger

Valencia have dismissed an enquiry from Manchester United for winger Vicente.

The Premiership giants reportedly lodged their interest in the Spain international but their enquiry met with a cool response from Valencia.

Vicente is purported to be Sir Alex Ferguson's latest transfer target after the Scot started his summer recruitment drive with the capture of Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

But Ferguson has been given no encouragement by Valencia, who are determined to retain the services of the wide man.

The 23-year-old has a further two years remaining on his contract and is rated in the £14 million bracket.

The Che have regularly stated they do not wish to sell Vicente and club president Juan Soler confirmed he had rebuffed an enquiry from Old Trafford.

"A director at the English club called me but Vicente is totally untransferable," Soler told The Sun.

Vicente is also aware of the interest from United but acknowledged he has no yearning to quit the Mestalla for The Premiership.

The winger said: "It's pleasing United are interested but I'm happy at Valencia.

"I know that United are interested in me but I didn't speak to anyone.

"The president informed me about this situation.

"But I'm happy to remain at Valencia because I was born here and it's my home."

Schmeichel: Van Der Sar Is Right Man For Reds

Sir Alex Ferguson has completed a transfer coup in signing Holland goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, according to United European Cup winner Peter Schmeichel.

The former Reds keeper, who Ferguson has found it so difficult to replace since his departure in 1999, says the Reds have finally found the man with the blend of ability, concentration and consistency.

So vital are those components to be successful goalkeeper at Old Trafford, that Schmeichel claims the lack of displaying all three for any sustainable period is the root cause of failure for his six major successors at the club.

However, with van der Sar, Ferguson's seventh attempt to find a consistently reliable heir, Schmeichel believes the outcome will be different.

"He's got everything," Schmeichel told MUTV. "He's got almost 100 caps for Holland. They are a great team and have been for a long time. So that just shows what he can do."

"He performs at a certain level every time. That is one of the most valuable things you can have as a goalkeeper.

"Being a goalkeeper at Old Trafford is special. You're not in the game all the time. You have to be alert and aware of what is happening, every single moment of the game."

He added: "It's easier when you get the ball a lot, if you have to make saves and come for crosses; that's when you don’t have to think about it.

"But when you are there on your own for periods of the game, you have to keep your concentration and keep your focus. That's what makes this place so difficult. But, with van der Sar, he has the quality to play for United.

"If you make a mistake it can follow you for a long time. We've seen that happen with other United goalkeepers. Mistakes have been made and a lot of people will not forget them."

Van der Sar will join the Reds on 1 July for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £2million. His arrival from Fulham is one that has been mooted for a long time, having caught Ferguson's transfer gaze on numerous occasions in the past.

A European Cup winner with Ajax in 1995, van der Sar then signed for Juventus in 1999. That was when the Dutchman first attracted interest from Sir Alex, at a time when the Scot was trying to replace the departing Schmeichel.

Seven years on, following two seasons in Turin and four years with Fulham after a £5m move from Italy, and van der Sar has eventually found his way to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman's detour may have been an inconvenience to Ferguson during that time where goalkeepers were drafted in at regular intervals, but Schmeichel believes the Reds boss has finally got the right man.

"Van der Sar is the right goalkeeper and the right person," he said. "I think he has been for a long time. I can understand where Sir Alex is coming from.

"He is rebuilding the squad so he needs somebody he can stick by, someone who is going to do the job.

"A few years ago there was a problem with the back four, but they are together and playing very well now. They are playing at a very high level and they need someone behind them.

"Van der Sar is only 34 so I think he can play on for another five years," added Schmeichel.

"But even if it is only for two years, it will still give the manager time to scout the world and find a long-term replacement. Two years is a long time in football. It can make a heck of a difference."

oh ****, Glazer going to kick Sir Bobby out of the club. :s27:

EXCLUSIVE: SIR BOBBY GETS THE BOOT
Charlton faces exile in Glazer United shake-up
By David McDonnell
SIR BOBBY CHARLTON is set to become a victim of Malcolm Glazer's ruthless overhaul of Manchester United.

Their most revered player could be exiled by the new Old Trafford owner's radical vision for the club.

Glazer installed his three sons on United's plc board this week and plans to delist the club this month, taking 14 years on the Stock Exchange.

The American billionaire will disband their six-man football board, which includes Sir Bobby and chief executive David Gill.

With United back in private hands, Glazer sees no need for two boards and has not made it clear whether there will be a new role for Sir Bobby inside Old Trafford.

The revelation will infuriate United fans opposed to Glazer's takeover and also anger boss Sir Alex Ferguson, for whom Sir Bobby has become a close confidante during his 18-year reign in charge.

While Fergie has publicly revealed his desire to develop a working relationship with the Glazers, he is opposed to radical change and would not want to see key figures like Sir Bobby, who made a record 606 appearances for the club, suddenly jettisoned.

But Glazer has wasted no time in pushing through his first changes at the club and more are expected to follow in the coming weeks as he seeks to assert his control.

Already plc chairman Sir Roy Gardner and fellow directors Jim O'Neill and Ian Much have resigned from the board, paving the way for him to appoint his three sons to start exerting control.

Last night Sir Bobby was unavailable to comment on the latest developments at Old Trafford.

that's becasue very very often, ur posts r very very very permistic. i dun prejudice on a certian person in MU thread, but on those permistic posts.
Come on, we dun need more cries, mourning, sighing frm supporters, had enough. Stand up, look up, and walk our way.

I prefer it this way, and I seriously think these players are more loyal to the club.
amendment on my our post, Peter Schmeichel not really unknown before moving to us, coz he won with Denmark th EURO92, in an amazing trip that year......

Man Utd are keeping tabs on two Denmark defenders - Brondby's Daniel Agger and Udinese's Per Kroeldrup and watched them in action in their World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night. But there was disappointment for Fergie as Valencia winger Vicente ruled out a move to Old Trafford.

MALCOLM GLAZER would not risk further fans backlash by axing Sir Bobby Charlton along with the rest of the United football board.

Reports today suggested the United legend was set to go as part of a Glazer reshuffle, but a source close to the Reds' new owner told M.E.N. Sport: "He has indicated he does not want to change the management and therefore it is implicit the structure of the organisation."

Glazer is today again in talks with United chief executive David Gill at his Florida mansion when he is expected to stress the need for even more success on the pitch - and bigger profits from worldwide merchandising.

If Glazer does, however, target the six-man football board when the club is taken off the Stock Market he will be strongly advised that it would be a PR disaster if Sir Bobby's status is diminished.

Charlton has served United with distinction both on and off the field for more than half-a-century.

Sean Bones, spokesman for Shareholders' United action group said: "Such is the aggressiveness of the Glazer takeover that we can expect to see him ripping out more and more of the club's history and heritage."

By NEIL CUSTIS

ALEX FERGUSON has told the Glazers of his two-year plan to put Manchester United back at the Premiership summit.

Boss Fergie had a meeting with prospective chairman Joel Glazer at the club’s Carrington training ground last week.

And during it he spelled out exactly how he is going to form a side that will dominate the game as they did in the 90s.

The new club owners are impressed with Ferguson’s plans.

Far from putting pressure on him for immediate results, they have faith in what the manager is doing.

Suggestions that Ferguson will be sacked if he does not deliver straight away were dismissed on both sides of the Atlantic yesterday.

Indeed a United source said: “It is laughable to say that Alex Ferguson has been given an ultimatum.

“He has demonstrated over the decades that he does not need any encouragement to strive for success.”

As revealed in SunSport in the wake of United’s FA Cup final defeat, Ferguson has decided to retire in two years when he is 65.

And in a revealing insight into Ferguson’s thinking, he has explained just how his team will grow into the best again in that time.

Ferguson said: “There is no question we have been trying to create a new team. Anyone who has been watching us can see that.

“We’ve signed Cristiano Ronaldo and we’ve signed Wayne Rooney, who have given the team youth.

“We’ve got Darren Fletcher coming through too and he has been fantastic for us. He’s going to be a great player for us in the midfield.”

Ferguson has told the Glazers that Ronaldo and Rooney are going to be sensations as they mature.

Already the pair have taken football by storm with their skill, drive and goals. Ferguson said: “Ronaldo is 20, Rooney is 19. Those two are going to be fantastic players.”

It is in defence where Ferguson believes he is also forming the backbone of what could be his best side yet.

He said: “Defensively, the ages of the players are actually young with players like Wes Brown (25) and John O’Shea (24).

“Look at the ages of the teams that win the European Cup and the average age is normally around 29.

“Our back four is really young and yet defensively they have done very well. So that is a great foundation.”

Ferguson knows he has an ageing midfield but believes the signing of Ronaldo and the advent of Fletcher, 21, is already creating a platform for the future.

He also still has faith in the experience of his old guard to oversee the transition and still deliver success.

Ferguson said: “The next part which we are trying to address is the midfield area

“We are not going to keep Roy Keane forever and Paul Scholes is 30, although I think Scholesy can play on for a bit yet.

“Ryan Giggs is 31 but I think he can play — he’s signed a new contract and is a fit lad — he can play for two or three years yet.”

Ferguson has already addressed the goalkeeping problem by getting the vastly-experienced Edwin van der Saar in for two years.

He still has faith in Tim Howard and believes that in those two years he will develop to become his No 1 again when Van der Saar leaves.

The problem last season was the lack of goals and his misfiring strikers.

But with £20million to spend this summer, Ferguson is looking to deal with that. However, the future of Dutch hitman Ruud van Nistelrooy remains in doubt.

England striker Michael Owen is the man Ferguson would ideally want at Old Trafford.

As revealed in today’s SunSport, the Glazers would also like David Beckham to be part of Ferguson’s thinking.

That would prove slightly more troublesome given the way their relationship broke down before he was sold to Real Madrid two summers ago.

Despite the tinkering that needs to be done, Ferguson is convinced his empire is not crumbling. And he has told the Glazers that he has complete faith in the character of his players.

At times that was questionable last season as they finished potless.

But Ferguson is convinced they can bounce back. He said: “I have great confidence in my players.

“We’re proud of the character of the team here — we’ve proved that time and time again.”

The Glazers are desperate for Ferguson to stay and see out his plans. That is why they have also told him to name his price on a new contract.

He may be facing one of the biggest challenges since winning his first Premiership at United in 1993.

Chelsea’s title win and Arsenal’s FA Cup success over them has left them playing catch-up.

Likewise their failure in Europe at the second round stage for a second season running is not good enough for a club of United’s size.

But neither Ferguson, nor now the Glazers, doubt that United can climb back to the top again.

MANCHESTER UNITED could get a tasty new badge if the Glazers decide the club needs an image change.

We asked for your ideas on a possible revamp — and you came up trumps with some dazzling designs.

Pride of place goes to the mouth-watering McDonald’s lookalike crest which would put Old Trafford right at the top of the Premiership menu.

Or the Americans might rename their new investment the Salford Red Sox. That would certainly improve the club’s footie index rating.

Many yanks for your help. :s22: :s13:

Agent speaks in Mikel saga

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Mark Buckingham - created on 9 Jun 2005

John Obi Mikel's agent John sh!ttu insists the Nigerian starlet was pressured into signing for Manchester United and refuted Lyn's suggestions that the teenager had been kidnapped.

Mikel is at the centre of an alarming transfer row after Lyn announced they had sold the player to The Red Devils in April.

The youngster was pictured holding a United shirt to mark his transfer but, behind the scenes, a storm was brewing.

Chelsea thought they had an agreement to sign the 18-year-old, while Lyn blamed Sh!ttu for the saga which could require Fifa's involvement to resolve.

But Sh!ttu is adamant he is not to blame for the furore and he points the finger at Lyn director Morgan Andersen for creating the messy situation.

Sh!ttu, who has been looking after Mikel's interests for over two years, insists the midfielder was coerced into signing a deal to join United by Lyn.

"On April 29 after noon I had a fax saying that Obi Mikel doesn't need my services as his agent anymore," Sh!ttu told This Day. "I told my secretary to forget it as that is not Mikel because we have been together for two-and-a-half years and I know he would never do such a thing.

"In the evening a friend called me and said 'congratulations, Obi Mikel has just signed for Man U'. I said please forget it, Mikel is not going to Man U.

"I kept calling him (Mikel) but he didn't respond so I left it until the next day and he said 'bros I am sorry it was these people'.

"He said it was Morgan Andersen. He was put in a room and was told that a day before Man U had contacted him and that they wanted Mikel to sign for them and the contract papers have been faxed to him (Andersen).

"He said he needed to speak to his agent but was refused. He said he needed to study the contract for a week - he was refused. He was told he could not speak to his agent or his family and was told to just sign the deal.

"He said he was forced to sign."

Sh!ttu then travelled to Norway for talks with Lyn and, at this point, the Mikel saga came to public attention with his club claiming the starlet had been kidnapped.

His representative strongly refutes the accusation, claiming Mikel merely opted not to go to a meeting with Andersen before travelling to London with Sh!ttu to escape the media spotlight.

Mikel has recently been with the Nigerian Under-20 squad and Sh!ttu is waiting for the matter to be resolved, with a return to Lyn a possibility.

He added: "If the contract is what Mikel wants, then no problem, but he should not be forced to sign a contract under duress.

"He is doing well. I left him in Paris with his team-mates. All the Norwegian people are waiting for us there."

Sh!ttu also revealed that Mikel, along with compatriot Isaac Promise, were close to signing for The Red Devils a couple of years ago after the pair trained with the Premiership giants.

"I went to Old Trafford to see the management team of Alex Ferguson and Jim Ryan," he continued.

"We sat down, had a meeting and arrived at an arrangement of how we can get the boys to sign for Man U.

"They made a lot of promises which the boys liked. We all agreed and we were expecting them to come back with their promises. In principle we agreed on what they wanted to do and how they wanted to finance the boys.

"After about two months of waiting for Man U to live up to their promises the boys became impatient in Nigeria and kept calling me and I was calling Man U but they were not forthcoming with anything."

Well, its nothing suprising, he has to do that to pay back the huge debts. :s8:

Glazer plan ticket price rise

US tycoon Malcolm Glazer's plans for Manchester United reportedly include costlier tickets and spending limit of £25m a year net on player transfers.
The Times newspaper said on Friday it had seen documents outlining proposals to boost Man Utd's revenues by just over half by 2010.

The draft proposals are likely to enrage Man Utd fans, many of whom oppose Mr Glazer's takeover.

A spokesman for Mr Glazer's business told the BBC nothing is finalised.

"Things are still up in the air. Plans have not been finalised," said the spokesman, who represents Mr Glazer's son Joel.

Ticket price rises

Earlier this week, Joel Glazer joined Man Utd's board as a non-executive director, along with his brothers Bryan and Avram.

The Glazer's investment company, Red Football, has won almost complete control of the club with its £790m takeover, much to the anger of supporters. It currently owns about 76.2% of Man Utd's shares

Among the draft proposals likely to anger fans are plans to increase ticket prices by 54% over five years, the Times reported.

Mr Glazer's ideas for the club's future include increasing the cost of attending Champions League games by as much as 25% from next year.

A deal with his bankers could restrict Man Utd's player purchase fund to £25m. Any more than this would have to come from player sales.

Mr Glazer reportedly intends to increase Man Utd's revenues by 52% to £245.6m by 2010 from £161.5m this year, the Times reported.

The increase will be achieved through a 61% increase in match day sales, a 13% rise in media sales, and 76% increase in sales of merchandise and other commercial activities.

Man Utd's players will have to play an annual exhibition match in Florida to increase revenues.

'Nothing settled'

"Nothing has been signed off. These are speculative numbers," Joe Glazer's spokesman said.

He also denied reports that Sir Bobby Charlton, the veteran England player, would be ousted from Man Utd's board.

Bobby Charlton "is in for life, and regarded with the utmost respect by the Glazer camp", Joel Glazer's spokesman said.

It is thought that next week the Glazers will reveal their exact shareholding when all replies to their offer of £3 per share have been received.

Park to Man U - a done deal?
6/10/2005 6:13:00 AM
Reports in the South Korean press this morning have claimed that Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven have agreed a fee of around $7 million for the Dutch giant's star midfielder Park Ji-sung.
Park, who scored his fifth goal in 53 games for South Korea on Wednesday as they clinched a place in Germany with a 4-0 win over Kuwait, said after the game that nothing had been decided.

However, a number of Korean newspapers say that since then PSV boss Guus Hiddink agreed the fee with Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill, with the details of the contract being decided later.

The 24 year-old joined the Dutch champions from Japanese outfit Kyoto Purple Sanga at the end of 2002 and despite a few settling in problems, has become a key figure in the team and shone in their recent run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

If the versatile midfielder joins United, he would become the first South Korean to appear in the English Premier League.

The big squeeze
Big-money signings like Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney could be a thing of the past at Old Trafford. Secret documents revealed last night show transfer spending will be squeezed to £25million a season under Malcolm Glazer’s new regime. The new owner will also release an additional £25m, spread over the next five years. But, with the Rooney deal costing United a potential £30m and defender Rio £29.1m, it is clear Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson will not be able to buy a team of superstars. The spending cap will be imposed as Glazer pays off the £374m in loans he used to buy his current 76.2 per cent share in the club. Fans will also be shocked by ticket price rises of 54 per cent within five years. The price of an average United ticket — expected to be £29.90 this year — will jump to £33.40 next year, £38.70 in 2007, £41 in 2008 and £43.40 in 2009. United fans will be expected to pay an average of £46 per ticket for home games in 2010 — just below the current cost of a ticket for Chelsea home games. But American tycoon Glazer will also bump up the prices for “Premier” games, such as Champions League quarter-finals and semis by 25 per cent — from next year. Tickets for group games will be 12.5 per cent more expensive.

Fergie leads Owen chase
Manchester United are in pole position to sign Michael Owen. Sir Alex Ferguson has been drooling over the prospect of creating an England dream team by linking the Real Madrid star with his own Wayne Rooney. And Fergie has asked Madrid to keep him informed about Owen's future. The Spanish giants have told Fergie if they decide to sell then United will get the nod. A United source said: "Michael is a proven goalscorer at every level of the game, so the boss knows what he can do and what he would bring to United. He would be a great signing for this club."

I'd adapt easily, says Park

PSV midfielder Ji-Sung Park believes he would not find it hard to adapt to life in the Premiership, if he decides to sign for Manchester United.

The South Korea international, who helped his country qualify for next summer's World Cup with a goal in their 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, is considering the move.

PSV have confirmed that United, who ended the season without a trophy after finishing third in the Premiership and losing the FA Cup final to Arsenal, have already made an enquiry about Park.

"I don't think that it would be difficult to adapt," Park told the Korea Times. "I need to think not only about football but also about living conditions there, and I have already been considering it.

"I didn't have such a big dream when I was young. What is important for me is which place would be better to develop myself faster and consistently. But I should wait to know whether the time is now or later.

Chelsea hope to succeed where Manchester United failed by luring Valencia winger Vicente to Stamford Bridge.

Valencia, and the Spanish international himself, snubbed an offer from Old Trafford after the Reds reportedly made a £14m bid for his services.

But now Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho looks set to test Valencia's resolve with a big-money offer which he hopes will allow Vicente to complete a switch to the Blues.

Mourinho is thought to see Vicente as ideal to cover the injury-prone Arjen Robben - and the winger, capped 29 times by Spain, is also comfortable on the right-hand side, a position where Chelsea were thought to lack cover last season.

Mourinho has previously been linked with Real Betis winger Joaquin and Manchester City favourite Shaun Wright-Phillips

Aiya relac lah... Its not like both United and Chelsea are trying to outbid each other for the same player... i mean this Vincente has already made it clear that he is not interested in a United move.

Anyway, better get used to this kind of rejections from star players. United are no longer the star player magnet they used to be... furthermore the days of splashing over 20 million for a single player are over. Don't mean to sound negative, but if United does not start winning things next season, we will seriously lose the 'shine' we used to have.

even better, we create stars and sell! Come on, it is not that our our players cannot make it k? y the hell always want to sign stars? the onli reason i can think of is to attract more audience to come in n watch the game.
If Glazer really so business minded, please ask the scouts to look for a few more good looking lads with David Beckham-to-be potential, groom them and build the image, this is the way to do business! anyway, nothing wrong in being a club creating stars and sell, and being able to get trophies at the same time. take a look at ajax, psv

Mikel transfer creates a riddle
Paul Hince

CHELSEA face the most severe sanctions ever imposed on a football club if FIFA investigators find that anyone representing the Premiership champions attempted to persuade John Obi Mikel to turn his back on Manchester United.

The bizarre transfer saga involving the Nigerian wonderkid, which has led to the full-scale probe by football's world governing body, began on April 29 - one week after Obi's 18th birthday. That was the day the midfielder agreed to move to Old Trafford on a four-year contract.

A day earlier, the Reds had negotiated a transfer fee with Obi's Norwegian club FC Lyn Oslo, which was widely reported at 10 million euros.

As part of that deal, the two clubs agreed that Obi would continue to develop his fledgling professional career at Lyn Oslo before moving to Manchester permanently at a later stage once his work-permit qualifications had been met.

On May 11, the youngster described by the Lyn coach Henning Berg as "better than Steven Gerrard at the same age" was accompanied to a cup tie between Lyn and Klemetstrud by the agent John ****tu, who had previously arranged for Obi to train at Chelsea through his Sports Entertainment and Media Group plc.

When the highly-rated teenage midfielder was approached by reporters after that cup tie, he said that he no longer wanted to move to Old Trafford. He claimed that he had been "coerced" into signing his pre-contract document with the Reds - and that he now wished to join Chelsea.

His father, Mikel senior, also said that his son had made a mistake in agreeing to join the United and he now wanted his son to pursue a career in England at Stamford Bridge.

On May 12, Obi failed to report for training with his Norwegian club. The following day, United reported Chelsea to the Premier League, asking the body to investigate whether Chelsea had played a part in the youngster's sudden change of heart.

London

Five days later, Obi and three other young Lyn players were in London in the company of the agent ****tu.

Within 24 hours, both United and Lyn Oslo had lodged an official complaint with FIFA. On May 21, Obi failed to report at the Flying Eagles camp in Holland for the Terborg Tournament.

Nothing was seen or heard of him until he reported for duty with the Nigerian Under-21 team earlier this week. He has not contacted any official at Old Trafford to confirm that he intends to honour the agreement he signed with the Reds.

However, fresh evidence has now emerged that an inquiry needs to be carried out into why Obi, who had signed a pre-contract document, had an apparent change of heart about moving to United within 12 days.

Whether Obi was "persuaded" to change his mind about his pending move to Old Trafford is part of the inquiry.

Threats

Norwegian newspapers reported on May 10 that the player had received death threats and had gone into hiding at a secluded hotel near Oslo.

M.E.N. Sport has obtained a transcript of an interview Obi gave to Nigerian reporters Samm Audu and Colin Udoh only two days after he agreed his four-year contract with United. The interview was subsequently printed in the football magazine Kick Off.

And in that interview, the sought-after youngster made it clear that he was delighted to be joining United. "I am really happy to get a chance to play for a big club like United," he said. "My family and I thank God for everything. It is a dream come true for a kid like me who has always loved football.

"Hopefully I should be with United by January next year, because I have not played the required 75 per cent of Nigeria's international games in the last two years.

"United are a very big club and I like everything about them. I have been to the club twice, once before the 2003 FIFA Under-17 tournament in Finland and then again after the competition. I found the players to be very friendly.

"My favourite shirt number is 10 but, at Old Trafford, Ruud van Nistelrooy has that number.

"I would have also loved the number 20 but that belongs to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so I've had to settle for 21. I hope it brings me luck.

"I don't have a contract with Chelsea. I only trained with them for two or three weeks. I am happy with the way the transfer was handled, although I know that Chelsea will not be happy. But both United and Chelsea are big clubs and will therefore find a way to solve whatever differences they may have.

"Chelsea are a big club with big money and they've just won the title. Any player would love to play for them but, all the same, I am happy with my deal with Manchester United."

United's chief executive David Gill admits to being baffled and disappointed by Obi's dramatic U-turn on his "dream" move to Old Trafford.

"We have been monitoring Obi's career since we saw him playing in the Nigerian Under-17 side in 2003," he said. "When he signed his agreement with us he was all smiles. He looked really pleased to be joining us.

"Everything about his transfer was done legally and in accordance with FIFA rules. We did everything strictly by the book. We dealt with his club first, settled on the fee, and then we talked to the player.

"The situation is very clear. He is still contracted to Lyn Oslo and no other club can approach Obi without his club's permission."

Because of the international aspect, the English Premier League have passed over United's request for an investigation to FIFA, who must now decide whether Chelsea had any influence over Obi's change of heart.

Although the talented young midfielder appended his signature to a pre-contract document rather than a contract itself, the agreement he made with United is legally binding. Obi has no option now but to report for duty at Old Trafford when he is cleared to work in this country.

Having already received the first instalment of the player's transfer fee from the Reds, FC Lyn Oslo cannot give permission to any other club to speak to Obi with a view to signing him.

After their highly-publicised and costly breaches of football regulations last season, Chelsea will be only too aware that if they are deemed by FIFA to have made an illegal approach to Obi, they will almost certainly start the defence of their Premiership title in August with a massive points deduction as well as a fine of such proportions that it would make a dent in Roman Abramovich's bank balance.

Yesh.... Must deduct points + ban them from making transfer for 3 years + ban from european competetion for 5 years, then they will learn their lesson.

Can you clear your head and read for god's sake. He said that 10 was his favourite number, but Ruud had it. 20 was his second favourite, but Ole had it. So he went for 21, and hopes that it brings him luck. That's all that he said. He didnt demand for the number 10 shirt.
