i dunno...but when i saw traroe charging the crosser (dunno who), i had bad feeling liao...

left back...charging at right back position....if cross deep...sure jiat liat....and my fears came true when the cross came and juv score.... probably if hamann is around..he would have pick up cannavaro..or a more experience gk may charge out to claim the cross...neither happen...
hmmm but from my view... i thought Carson should have saved it cleanly...
he kinda mishandled the ball ala dudek and helped it into the back of the net...

but he is quite a gd keeper and is only 19, will have a bright future ahead of him.. if he continues working hard in training and picking up experience when he is called upon... he will be our future no 1..

yes...he should have save it...

i am saying..he could/should have come out to collect the ball...seeing no defenders is challenging... a more experience gk may notice the danger more and come out to collect the cross...

he is still a good gk and is young somemore...bright future for him, liverpool and england

RAFA: WE CAN REACH THE SEMI-FINAL
Steve Hunter 05 April 2005
Rafael Benitez said he was delighted with the performance of his side in the first half against Juventus and believes Liverpool have a great chance of reaching the Champions League semi-final.
While admitting it was disappointing to concede an away goal Benitez said the first half performance was the level at which he wants to see his team play consistently.

Benitez said: "I was delighted with our first half performance. We scored two goals, created good chances and we did a lot of the things we have talked about.

"It's difficult to do the same and keep up that tempo all game and while I am disappointed with the goal we conceded we have confidence for the second leg.

"We now have two options for the second leg. We can win or draw and that gives us two possibilities to reach the semi-finals. I think we will score in Italy and we will go into the game with confidence."

The Liverpool manager refused to single out blame to goalkeeper Scott Carson for the goal which Juventus scored and said Jerzy Dudek was honest enough to admit he wasn't fit to start the game.

Benitez said: "I talked to Jerzy and he said he wasn't confident because he felt pain in his groin. We then felt it was much better to use a goalkeeper who was 100 per cent fit."

GERRARD: WE CAN FINISH THE JOB OFF
Paul Eaton 05 April 2005
Steven Gerrard insists Liverpool have every reason to feel confident about reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League following their brilliant 2-1 victory over Juventus.
The tie is still on a knife edge after Cannavaro's header squirmed into the back of the Liverpool net, but the skipper believes the Reds can now finish the job off in Turin.

"We're pleased," Gerrard said. "We'd have have taken that before the game.

"It was such a great atmosphere and we scored two but it was a blow to concede one.

"I'm sure Scott will be disappointed with it but he stopped one in the first half that was one of the best saves I have seen this season.

"He will learn and now Scott or Jerzy need to keep a clean sheet for us in the second leg.

"I don't think we'll play for a 0-0. We have got the ability to nick a goal over there. That will be the game plan, to keep a clean sheet and nick a goal. I firmly believe we have the quality to get a goal over there.

"A clean sheet and we're in the last four of the competition. That would be magnificent for this football club."

CAPELLO HAPPY IN DEFEAT
Paul Eaton 05 April 2005
Juventus boss Fabio Capello was more than happy to leave Anfield on Tuesday night with a 2-1 defeat.
The Italians were completely outplayed during a one sided first half in which Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia gave Liverpool a two goal lead.

But Juventus hit back after the break and netted what could prove to be a valuable away goal when veteran defender Fabio Cannavaro headed past Scott Carson from close range.

"In that first half we just didn't play, we didn't get started. The doubts I had before the game about not having played on Saturday and not being sharp enough were well founded," said Capello.

"We were not fast enough, and we were lucky that Liverpool had only three chances and scored just two goals.

"But I was delighted with the reaction of my team after the interval. We were more aggressive and faster all over the pitch.

"After being 2-0 down of course I am happy with the outcome. I am very satisfied with the way we came back in the second period.

"And now I have faith in my team and trust them to win the second leg and go through into the semi-finals.

"I brought Pessotto as a tactical change, I wanted someone to stay in one position and stop the flow of attacks to allow others to go forward, and it worked.

"We all suffered in that first half, but when we did get the ball and attack in that second period, we caused them a lot of problems which gives me great confidence for the second game.

"I expected Liverpool to play with two forwards, but we allowed them to take far too much control and we just did not get started in the match.

"But I accept that we saw two excellent teams and Liverpool certainly played well. But I accept that at 2-0 down it was a very difficult task for us and I feared for the future, but at the break I impressed on the team that they could score and I felt we were also going to get the equaliser after we did managed to find the net."

Liverpool's young goalkeeper Scott Carson has accepted the blame for Juventus' away goal at Anfield.
The Reds blazed into a 2-0 lead during a feverish first half display, but the powerful Italians applied more pressure during the second half.
Fabio Cannavaro grabbed a vital away goal just after the hour mark, when Carson allowed a soft header to elude him at the far post, and he fully accepts the blame.
However, the 19-year-old has vowed not to let his error play on his mind and will aim to bounce back should he play in Liverpool's next match.
"At the time I didn't think it was an error but I've seen it on telly and obviously I feel as if I could have done better," said Carson.
"But I'm not going to beat myself up about it.
"If you go into the next game thinking 'I made a mistake in the last game' you're going to struggle.
"I talked to the goalkeeping coach after the match," added the England under-21 keeper who joined from Leeds United.
"He said 'It bounced in front of you. It's just one of those things. Forget about it'."
Czech Republic striker Milan Baros emulated Steven Gerrard's comments after the game that Liverpool would not go to Turin looking for a draw.
"We know the second match won't be easy but we're 2-1 up and they have to play," said Baros.
"We can't go there to defend. We have to play offensively and try to score.
"We've played quite well in the Champions League so far so I don't think we'll be intimidated by the atmosphere in Turin."

UEFA PRAISE REDS AFTER EMOTIONAL NIGHT
Paul Eaton 06 April 2005
UEFA last night paid tribute to Liverpool for the way they handled their first meeting with Juventus since the Heysel tragedy.
A series of commemorative events took place before the game, culminating in a mosaic on the Kop before kick-off as fans held up black, white and red cards spelling out "Amicizia", the Italian word for friendship.

The first clash between the sides in 20 years was always going to be an emotional affair, but UEFA say Liverpool made the occasion one to remember.

Deputy chief executive Markus Studer, among the official UEFA party at Anfield last night, said: "You have to say the organisation was just right, it was perfect.

"Liverpool must be applauded for the way they handled the arrangements and the fans of both clubs understood the message.

"There was not a hint of trouble in the stadium, there was a fantastic atmosphere and both clubs must be praised. It was a very successful night for European football.

"The mosaic was a very nice gesture and the Juventus fans warmly appreciated it. The whole match was played in a perfect atmosphere and the night was handled in the right way."

RAFA: WE'LL NEED TO SCORE IN TURIN
Paul Eaton 06 April 2005
Rafael Benitez feels Liverpool will need to score in Turin if they are to reach the semi finals of the Champions League for the first time.
Last night's thrilling 2-1 first leg victory over Juventus has given the Reds an advantage for the second leg next Wednesday, but Benitez knows Fabio Cannavaro's second half header has given the Italians a lifeline in the tie.

"We had a very good first half, but they were better in the second period and it was difficult for us to keep the ball," said the Liverpool manager.

"But we won against a really great side, even though I accept that we must score in Turin.

"In that first period we did everything that we had talked about, we scored two great goals, but it is difficult to maintain that level for the whole 90 minutes.

"We had confidence and knew what we had to do, but 90 minutes at that tempo is very difficult to maintain.

"As for the goal we conceded, I do not blame the 'keeper. But we were not ready for the corner and we reacted too late.

"The ball bounced right infront of the 'keeper and it was very difficult for him. He was in a good position but the bounce deceived him.

"As for the second leg, we do have confidence but we know it will be more difficult. But do not forget that they must win the match to go through, they must attack us and only time will tell whether their goal was more important than our two.

"If we win or draw we are through. But do not forget that we have played very well against a great team.

"For me it means we can beat all the other teams in the tournament, but we must be confident to go through."

dudek did not play cos he is not 100% fit, still recovering from a groin strain..

anyway i think carson did quite well for a european debut..
at 19 yrs old.. he is definitely a prospect for the future, and i am glad pool managed to beat chelsea to signing this youngster..

Finally have time to sit down and review on last night's performance. My own ratings and comments. :)

1) Carson, 6.5 - Nice work whole evening except the goal that he let in. Pulled a few good saves and was focused thruout the night though was almost caught in 2 worlds with Carra for poor communication btw the 2. Would have a '7' if not for the goal conceded.
2) Finnan, 7 - good fullback support down the right. Wonderful passing on the right wing.
3) Carra, 7.5 - Very composed and focused. No fancy footwork but classy defending.
4) Hyypia, 8 - Good goal, dealt nicely with the crosses which Juve eventually opted to attack thru the middle with defence-splitting passes. Supposed the few matches rest did him good.
5) Traore, 6 - Average performance. Gave a few balls away and made me wonder why he was jumping to block the ball coming from the right where he should have been marking his man on the left.
6) Garcia, 8 - Kept up with his form, good footwork and passing. Most importantly of all, scored a wonderful goal. Guess Moro gave him some tips on that shot :)
7) Gerrard, 8 - back to his usual running all round the pitch. If not for him, Nedved might have bagged in a goal or two from outside the penalty box. Luckily for Gerrard to backtrack fast enough to put him off. Was very careful with his tackles, not wanting to invite any unwelcomed 'yellow'.
8) Biscan, 7 - Defensive holding play wise ok, did well in his passes and driving forward with confidence.
9) Riise, 6.5 - Did some nice cover work defensively but was lacking the punch in his attacks. Abit quiet than usual.
10) Le Tallec, 6.5 - Quite a quiet day. Good experience and showing for a senior cap in a CL match.
11) Baros, 6 - Not as hardworking as usual, perharps due to the double-team whenever he has the ball. Better work harder and faster. RB's patience is drawing thin as observed.
12) Nunez, 6.5 - not much time given but was lively. Was unlucky on a few grounds when he was taken out on the right. Show a little magic with nice footwork but crosses can still be better.
13) Smicer - Quiet night for a man 'getting old'.

agree with u on most...but on traore...i dont fault him for charging/blocking the cross...he did the right thing in fact...qn is...why is he there at the first place? after the inital corner was cleared..y no other players..biscan/gerrad/garcia(right mid)/baros/lta was there to close/cover the right...? the prob as RB had pointed out...we were slow and not ready for the corner...leaving gaps and were exploited by juv quickly....I would give traore a 7 at least....

Gerrard was involved more defensively last night... and he did well to hold the midfield together... did not really see him make many foraging runs from midfield... but his tracking and tackles in the engine room was good, and his spraying of passes was gd as usual..

STEVIE: WE NEED THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR LIVES
Steve Hunter 06 April 2005
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has described the performance against Juventus as the Reds' best this season, but stressed they'll need to perform even better to finish the job off in Turin next week.
Gerrard is refusing to be too downhearted over the away goal gifted to the Italians in the second period and is instead taking heart from an overall display which, he feels, eclipses anything the Reds have produced for many years.

Gerrard said: "That was easily the best we've played all season. I would put it beyond the Arsenal and Olympiakos performance. Given the calibre of opposition, the first half performance may even be as good as anything I can remember in the last few years.

"You have to look at what we've done. We've beaten one of the best teams in Europe. Juventus and AC Milan were everyone's favourites and not many would have given us a chance. But everyone stood up to the task and we've achieved a special result.

"A lot of us are going to have to put in the performances of our career in Turin.

"Every player has to be on top form that night. We won't be able to carry anyone, from the starting 11 to the substitutes. We know how hard it's going to be, but we should take a lot of confidence from this.

"There's a semi-final place for us if we can put in another performance like last night. None of us have experienced a European Cup semi-final before and we're all desperate to make it happen."

HOW THE MEDIA REPORTED LAST NIGHT'S WIN
Paul Eaton 06 April 2005
After a stunning victory over Juventus in last night's Champions League clash at Anfield we take a look at how the British and Italian media are reporting the action this morning.

Emotion clearly brings the best out of Liverpool. On an evening when public moves were made to heal the wounds inflicted on a terrible night at Heysel 20 years ago, the Merseysiders emerged from a blistering contest with victory and genuine belief fuelling their Champions League campaign. That conviction will not have been drained by Juventus's inevitable second-half revival which plucked what may yet prove to be a crucial away goal from the dregs. Few had anticipated anything but Liverpool's willing triers, with so much talent absent, spluttering aground upon consummate Serie A defence. Instead the Italians have been shown to be fallible, their soft underbelly exposed, to ensure that Rafael Benitez's side travel to Turin next week retaining real hope of progress.
The Guardian

The fantastic atmosphere of Anfield was like an electric shock for the Liverpool players, who started the match at an astonishing tempo. They seemed unstoppable, while the Juventus players used neither their brains nor their legs. Fabio Capello will have to think about this incredible blackout which allowed Liverpool to score two goals. When they seemed on their knees, however, Juventus reacted, showing their great personality. Cannavaro's goal is more than enough to keep Juventus's hopes of qualifying alive and the Bianconeri were unlucky not to score more goals. Capello made a great substitution when he fielded Pessotto instead of Blasi in midfield and managed to balance the whole team. However, he will need Emerson in better condition next week. And most of all he will need the real Juventus for 90 minutes, not part-time like at Anfield.
Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy

Nothing the Grand Old Lady servedup at Anfield should worry Liverpool on this form, and nothing should detract from a performance that illustrated why Benitez encourages such confidence for the future. Although in Europe he is proving just fine at present.
For 30 first-half minutes Liverpool produced their finest football in several years to establish a two-goal lead through Sami Hyypia and the outstanding Luis Garcia. And against a team whose strength in depth puts Liverpool's resources firmly in the shade.
Liverpool Daily Post

Rafael Benitez got his wish. If ever a game could be fitting as a tribute to the victims of Heysel, this was it.
It was always going to be a momentous night. No one, though, could have predicted there would be a football occasion to match.
On a Champions League evening that surely comes close to anything that has been witnessed before in this famous old stadium, Liverpool produced one of the greatest 45-minute performances in their European history.
Daily Mirror

The profound sadness of the emotions stirred by the death of 39 people 20 years ago is a strange and unnerving backdrop for a football match, but for at least 45 minutes last night Rafael Benitez's Liverpool put aside the tension of the occasion. Their two goals threatened to make this one of Anfield's greatest nights, until Fabio Cannavaro intervened to wrench the advantage in this absorbing tie back towards Juventus.
Defending this fragile lead in the Stadio delle Alpi on Wednesday will require Benitez's side to summon the verve and the fortitude that characterised their first half last night. Led by Steven Gerrard, they scored two goals against a team that had conceded only two in their entire eight previous matches in thiscompetition. And in the second strike, by Luis Garcia, they had a goal that will give hope to every supporter who makes the difficult journey to Turin next week.
The Independent

Rarely have the Italian giants been subjected to such a hounding, in fact they had conceded only two goals in the tournament before this emotional quarter-final first leg showdown at Anfield.
Before the game the thoughts were all about the Heysel disaster 20 years ago when these two sides last met in competitive action.
By half-time Anfield was relishing an outstanding, if unexpected performance from their heroes.
But Juventus were never likely to go down without a fight and their second half display of control, skill, constant movement and possession gave Liverpool an insight into what they will face in next week's return in Turin.

I also feel LTA did quite well.. playing off Baros.. he pressured and ran for every ball.. had a hand to play in the second goal.. held the ball well whilst waiting for support etc...

He is another talent to watch in yrs to come...

Xabi Alonso has given Liverpool's Champions League hopes a massive boost by playing 45 minutes for the Reserves in the 1-0 defeat by Leeds United at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Spanish ace Alonso has been out for three months after breaking his ankle on New Year's Day against Chelsea and the sight of the midfield maestro back on a football pitch ahead of schedule is a very welcome one for Rafael Benitez.

Alonso played the second half and was quickly into his stride, making tackles and spraying the ball about with quality passes left, right and centre. He looked really sharp and combined superbly in midfield with John Welsh.

As for the game itself Hughie McAuley's side gave it everything, especially in the second half with Alonso on the field, and they were unlucky not to get at least a point.

Liverpool played good passing football in the second half and used the width well with Richie Partridge down the right, and Ryan Wilkie especially down the left catching the eye. Wilkie had an excellent game and was a constant threat to the Leeds defence.

Many times in the second half Liverpool got in behind the Leeds defence but the only thing that was lacking what a goal predator to put the ball in the back of the net. Irish youth striker Conal Platt worked hard and is a good young footballer with a good touch and vision, but he is more of a creative attacking player than a natural finisher.

The only goal of the game came on 27 minutes when Leeds Chris Jones curled a splendid shot past Paul Harrison.

With captain John Welsh and David Mannix in central midfield Hughie McAuley gave Academy defender Adam Hitchen his first reserve start at right back with David Raven moving to left back. Darren Potter played just off the lone striker Conal Platt.

Potter created the first chance for the Reds after two minutes when his superb back heel released Richie Partridge whose effort was well saved by Leeds former Charlton keeper Sasa Ilic.

Partridge went close again after 11 minutes when his cross was deflected just over the bar and at the other end David Raven cleared a Leeds cross off the line.

Wilkie then got in behind the Leeds defence down the left side but his cross was behind Partridge. Then after more good play from Wilkie Darren Potter had a great chance but unfortunately the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international miskicked in front of goal.

The best moment of the night arrived in the second half with the arrival of Xabi Alonso. Hitchen made way with Mannix moving to right back with Alonso partnering Welsh in midfield.

Straight away Alonso was putting tackles in and not afraid to get stuck in.

Liverpool had a great chance to equalise after 56 minutes from a corner but the unmarked Danny O'Donnell blazed over the bar.

After 70 minutes Alonso produced a brilliant cross from the left wing which he hit with the outside of his right foot, but after a goalmouth scramble Liverpool just couldn't force the ball home.

A superb Alonso pass then sent Partridge racing away but despite cutting into the area he shot wide. Partridge also missed a great chance four minutes from time when he couldn't keep an effort down from a good position.

Liverpool Reserves: Harrison, Hitchen (Alonso 45), Raven, O'Donnell, Whitbread, Mannix, Partridge, Welsh, Platt, Potter, Wilkie. Subs unused: Willis (GK), Hammill, Noon, Barratt.

Leeds United Reserves: Ilic, McKeown, Morris, Rothery, Keegan, Parker, Gray, Jones, Corr, Smith, Woods.

Referee: P N Gibbs.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: Ryan Wilkie. Superb display on the left wing from Wilkie, really got at the Leeds right back.

Different style of play. when he play for Czech, he is a 2nd striker to Koller where Rosicky is the play maker... At Liverpool, he is the lone striker where 2 to 3 defender pin pointing him and there is really no real play maker to support him so it is more difficult that way.

ALONSO DELIGHTED TO BE BACK
Steve Hunter 07 April 2005
Xabi Alonso says it has been very frustrating being on the sidelines for three months but added he is raring to go again after making a successful comeback for the reserves.
Alonso played 45 minutes for the reserves against Leeds United on Wednesday night and looked sharp and eager to please.

Alonso said: "It was good for me to have a game and I felt no pain. I have been out for three months and it has been very frustrating to miss out on some very big games.

"I am getting fitter and I hope to be back in the first team soon. I am very confident, the ankle is good and I am running very well.

"It was nice to be back on the bench against Juventus. It was a great match for us and we hope we can go through to the semi-finals now. I will keep on working hard in training and get fitter so I am ready for the team when the manager needs me.

"We have a lot still to play for and it's nice for me to be back playing again and be a part of it and help my team."

EURO DREAMS GIVING LUIS SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
Paul Eaton 07 April 2005
Luis Garcia has admitted the thought of winning this season's Champions League - and not the fact he has just become a father for the first time - is keeping him awake at nights.
Garcia struck a wonder goal at Anfield on Tuesday night to put the Reds in the driving seat at the end of the first leg clash with Juventus, and the Spaniard has revealed he has allowed himself to think about the prospect of ending the campaign as a Champions League winner.

He said: "My son knows his daddy needs rest and I am lucky that he is allowing me to sleep right through.

"There is a good chance he will grow up with a scouse accent as well, but I have to admit I have been lying awake at night and I have allowed myself to think about us winning the Champions League.

"We have players who are good enough to do it and we only have to look at Monaco and Porto last year to realise what can be achieved.

"I am not sure I have had a best game for Liverpool yet. I have had moments when I have played to my level and done good things, but there have always been little things I would have done differently.

"I was pleased with how I did against Juventus and the goal was one of the best I have scored. It was a good result for us.

"I am really enjoying it at Liverpool. I am settling in more and more. My family are over now and I have bought a house."

GERRARD HAILS RED HOT STARS
Daily Mirror 07 April 2005

Steven Gerrard proudly insisted last night that Liverpool's first-half display against Juventus was their best in years.

But the Anfield skipper accepts his team will have to produce the performance of their lives if they are to reach the Champions League semi-finals. Liverpool can hardly believe the manner in which they destroyed the Italian giants in a pulsating first half.

But a Juventus goal after the break brought everyone back down to earth. Now they must go to Turin and pull off the virtually impossible... getting a draw in the Stadio Delle Alpi.

"Given the calibre of opposition, the first-half performance may be as good as anything I can remember in the last few years here at Liverpool," said Gerrard.

"That was easily the best we've played all season. I would put it beyond the Arsenal and Olympiacos performances.

"We've beaten one of the best teams in Europe. Juventus and AC Milan were everyone's favourites and not many would have given us a chance.

"But everyone stood up to the task and we have achieved a special result."

But Juve are hot favourites for the return and a 1-0 win at home will see them through.

Liverpool, though, at least have a one-goal cushion, and while the captain knows how hard things will be in Turin next week, Gerrard is adamant it is possible. He said: "We know how difficult it will be and how good they are, they are one of the best in Europe, so a lot of us are going to have to put in the performances of our career in Turin.

"Every player has to be on top form that night.

"We won't be able to carry anyone, from the starting eleven to the substitutes.

"But we should take a lot of confidence from the win at Anfield. We showed we can beat them and there's a semi-final place for us if we can put in another performance like that.

"None of us have experienced a European Cup semi-final before and we're all desperate to make it happen."

Reds keeper Scott Carson claims he is tough enough to overcome what he admits was a costly error against Juventus.

"Yeah, I'll hold my hands upfor the goal," he said. "I've seen it on TV and it was a mistake. But I'm not going to beat myself up about it - it happens.

"I'm confident in my own ability and I will learn from the mistake, not dwell on it."

RAFA: CITY GAME AS IMPORTANT AS JUVE
Paul Eaton 07 April 2005
Rafael Benitez has told his players they must approach Saturday's visit to Manchester City in the same way they did against Juventus on Tuesday night.
Liverpool came storming out of the blocks against the Italians and could have finished the tie in the first half before Juventus gave themselves hope after the break with a header from Cannavaro.

With a gap still to claw back on Everton in the race for fourth place, Benitez wants his players to perform to a similar standard when they travel to Manchester this weekend.

He said: "We are more consistent now than we were earlier in the season, but even in the Juventus match you saw two different levels.

"Now we have time for the players to recover for Saturday, maybe we will use some different players, but I hope we will approach the Manchester City game with the same attitude as we played Juventus. We need to do the same again to get even closer to Everton.

"Our idea is to play at the same level in all the games and I believe we are closer than before to that standard. We are also closer to Everton now and we must continue in the same way playing with this high tempo and the same mentality."

While Benitez is calling for more consistency in the Premiership run-in, he is more than happy with his side's European displays this season.

He added: "We have produced a good Champions League tournament. The thing is, if you don't win the tournament then people remind you of when the club were able to do that.

"I understand, but I look at what has been achieved this season and I am happy with the progress. I can only say that we will try with everything we have to give this club a good position in Europe again."

Liverpool's Anthony Le Tallec has described Tuesday's 2-1 win over Juventus as the best moment of his career.
The French youngster was something of a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up for Rafa Benitez's side, and put in a sterling display after enduring a troubled season to date.
Le Tallec has been in the Anfield wilderness since the arrival of the former Valencia boss, and only returned to the club in January following a disappointing loan spell with Ligue 1 outfit St Etienne.
However the 20-year-old responded well to the challenge of facing the Italian giants, and revealed that Benitez offered him words of encouragement before the game.
"I expected a little to be a first team member, it was 50-50 between [Antonio] Nunez and me," Le Tallec told L'Equipe.
"Before the match Benitez told me: 'Where were you three months ago? Today it is up to you to play, football is just like that, it can change very quickly, perhaps it will be your last Champions League quarter final so make the most of it'.
"His instructions were to play just behind [Milan] Baros and control Emerson, I think I had a good match.
"I have never played at such a level, I am so happy, it is the best memory of my career.
"I have scored one goal in the Uefa Cup against Ljubljana, but this time it is something else."
Le Tallec has featured sparsely this season at both Liverpool and St Etienne and admitted that the pace of the European tie left him tired as he made way for Vladimir Smicer.
The former Le Havre man also held out hope that his performance against the Bianconeri, which included an assist for Luis Garcia's strike, would affect a change in his first team prospects.
"What surprised me the most is to have lasted 75 minutes at the same pace, I finished completely exhausted," Le Tallec continued.
"I hope we will qualify, then, if the first match can change my playing time, it would be nice."

CARSON: I'LL BOUNCE BACK FROM MISTAKE
Paul Eaton 07 April 2005

Scott Carson has insisted he will bounce back from his goalkeeping error against Juventus on Tuesday night.

The England under-21 star turned in an excellent display on his Champions League debut, but unfortunately made a costly mistake in the second half to gift the Italians what could prove to be a precious away goal.

But Carson refuses to be too down about the incident and instead prefers to concentrate on the massive strides he has made in his career over recent weeks.

"It was only a couple of months ago that I was playing for Leeds reserves at Wakefield, and we'd be lucky to get a couple of hundred fans in," he said.

"So to go from that level to the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus - you can't ask much more than that.

"I have got Buffon's shirt and that is going straight on the wall. I got a special buzz when the Champions League anthem played.

"When you see that as a kid on TV, you think 'It'd be a dream to play in a game like that'. Once it happens, you are a bit overwhelmed. But the fact I have now played in the Champions League gives me massive confidence and I know I can play at that level. I can't speak about how good it was to play in a game like that. We definitely have a chance in the second leg and if I get the nod, I'll do my best and won't be fazed."

He added: "At the time I did not think it was an error for the goal. But after seeing it on the TV I now feel I could have done better.

"The ball bounced up in front of me. But I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I will just concentrate on doing better.

"If I go into the next game thinking I made a mistake in the one before, then I am going to struggle. I'm confident in my own ability and hopefully everything should be okay.

"It's the most intense atmopshere I have ever experienced. But once you get out there and the whistle goes, you forget about it and concentrate on your own game. It was my first Champions League game, and hopefully I will keep playing and improving."

yah i admire patridge too.. and have said before he can be liverpool's version of ryan giggs.
however he is very injury prone, and seem to be spending more time on the operation table then on the field..

have seen some reserve footage of him before... can see glimpses of slick footwork and passsing... but cannot seem to reproduce it for the whole match... and that might be y he has not been able to make the step up to the first team yet..

just my 2 cents..

Yes, i had agreed before to get wingers to strengthen the club as Kewell is always out with injury, Riise is not a natural winger, Garcia neither is a winger when he's played on the right. Nunez wasn't sharp after arriving from RM.

But after seeing Nunez's past 2 games, i do feel that he's 'slowly' showing us that he does have some worth that we must not discount him for. For once he's getting more confident to go past the defenders and that is a good sign. Especially in the match vs Juve where he was persistent to go down the right despite drawing 2 defenders to himself and eventually show us that he does have the 'skill' to go past even 2 (with a little bit of luck). I hope to see him play the remaining matches on the right as often as he gets to and continue to impress RB and us that he deserves a shot for that right winger role.

Hey Keltan, wanna org an outing for Sat match vs Man City or not?? :D

NANDO THRILLED WITH XABI FITNESS BOOST
Paul Eaton 07 April 2005
Fernando Morientes has described Xabi Alonso's return to fitness as "the best possible news" for Liverpool fans.
Alonso successfully came through a 45 minute run-out for the reserves last night after recovering from a broken ankle and could be in line for a place in the squad at Manchester City this weekend.

Morientes insists the Spanish midfielders's return couldn't be better timed as the Reds look to leapfrog Everton into fourth and continue their adventure in the Champions League.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Xabi is a great player, one of the best midfielders in the game and so to have him back to fitness is the best possible news any Liverpool fan could hope for.

"We have so many big games left to play this season and we're going to need our top players. He has recovered well from his injury and I know all the lads are glad to have him back again."

Morientes admits confidence in the camp is high following the victory over Juventus but he insists that result must be put to one side for now as the Reds look forward to Saturday's Premiership clash at Manchester City.

"Everyone is on a high at the moment because of the Juventus result but we know the job isn't finished yet," he said. "We are going to have to play very well defensively over there to get through the tie, but I believe we can do it. But before that we need to win at the weekend.

"The whole occasion against Juventus was magnificent. I can't even find the words to talk about the supporters on the night. They were incredible. All I can say is that fans from other clubs should look at the Liverpool supporters and learn from them. They are amazing.

"I know all the players want to reward the fans for their backing this season. It was always going to be a transitional season with it being the manager's first year here, but I think we're now seeing signs of what the future holds."

Morientes admits he's gutted at not being able to play a part in Liverpool's Champions League campaign this season, but he's now fully fit after injury and preparing to lead the line at Manchester City on Saturday.

He said: "I've been training properly this week and feel good now. Of course I'm disappointed I can't play in the Champions League, but I knew the situation before I came to the club. It does bug me, but there's nothing I can do.

"It just means I want to do even better in the Premier League games. I'm happy with the way I've started at Liverpool and I want to make sure I end the season having scored some more goals for the club."

XABI LEADS HIS RACE TO FACE JUVE
Liverpool Echo 07 April 2005

Xabi Alonso looks certain to be thrust straight back into Premiership action in a bid to be fit for the Champions League return with Juventus.

Rafa Benitez is desperate for his playmaker to prove his fitness ahead of the trip to Turin and will test the Spanish star against Manchester City this weekend.

Alonso played 45 minutes for the reserves last night and he's sure to play some role in the trip to the City of Manchester Stadium.

Much depends on the 23-year-old's reaction to his first match in three months, but he came through his first competitive action unscathed.

Alonso would be a key man in Europe, where Liverpool know they are going to have to maintain possession for long periods to fend off the Juve stars.

"I came through last night's game very well," said Alonso today. "The ankle is not too bad. It's been a frustrating time for me but I'm just concentrating and getting fit again.

"I wasn't thinking about a date to return, just working hard to get back. Now I feel confident about the ankle. I'm running very well.

"Going into my first tackle felt strange, but it was fine. It was very frustrating for me watching the game on Tuesday.

"We will have to wait and see about the City game. I will talk to the manager and keep training hard to get fit.

"It's good to be back with my teammates. Like every player, I just want to be out on the pitch again."

Benitez faces the dilemma of who to select at centre-half on Saturday.
Sami Hyypia's stirring response to his recall may give him the edge over Mauricio Pellegrino.

I rather Alonso start the game and perharps sub him out after halftime. But i can't think of someone to make way for him at the moment cos Moro and Baros could be spearheading the attack, though Baros may well deserve to face the chop after countless disappointing matches recently. Riise, Gerrard, Garcia and Biscan to keep their places in the midfield. Unless RB so decide to chop Baros for the match and use Garcia behind Moro.

Totally forgot if Hamann still injured, forgotten that Baros suspended. I feel Riise needs to cont, Garcia in the hole... and Alonso to start the game so can highten the tempo with his passing and then later Biscan to come in later to hold the game if we're leading or LTA if in need of goals.

I hope Baros will reflect on his recent performances in REDs jersey and tat of in Czech jersey. Hope he produce some good performances with goals to add to his current tally and propel Liverpool in search of the coveted 4th spot. Irregardless of whether he's still going to be wearing the Liverpool jersey next season. I oso growing abit 'tired' of his goal drought especially when he's suspended for 3 EPL games, he shld have make full use of his slot in the CL match lineup. Sigh...

WAKE UP BAROS, WAKE UP! I gotta be fair this time round... u might really deserve to be shown the exit door BUT... i'm hoping for the best from you PLEASE!

Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer could return to Lens in the summer, after revealing he is considering two offers.

Smicer's contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season and he previously hinted he is keen to secure an extension.

But the 31-year-old now appears poised to leave the Merseyside outfit and a move back to old club Lens is a possibility.

The Czech Republic ace has confirmed that he has two offers on the table, with one rumoured to be from Lens.

"It is 90 percent certain that I will quit Liverpool," Smicer told Vecernik Praha.

"I have two concrete offers coming in from big areas."

Smicer joined The Reds from Lens in 1999 and has performed a useful role as a squad player at Anfield.

He missed the bulk of this season due to a knee injury before making a return to action in February.

The attack-minded midfielder featured as a substitute in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League victory over Juventus and will be hoping for more playing time as his Liverpool career draws seemingly near to a close.

Polish outfit Wisla Krakow are also keen on Smicer after their coach Werner Licka admitted the club wanted to sign the player.

Real Madrid striker Michael Owen would have 'nothing against' moving back to former club Liverpool.

Michael Owen: Real benchwarmer (MikeHewitt/GettyImages)

The 25-year-old moved from Anfield to the Bernabeu last summer but has struggled to command a regular starting place with the Spanish giants.

Owen has been in impressive goalscoring form when brought off the bench for his new club and the England man's lack of opportunities have led to him being linked with a return back to the Premiership.

'Would I return to Liverpool? I would have nothing against it if I had to move for one reason or another,' he told Shoot magazine.

'I left Liverpool on good terms, they are still the first result I look out for and I have a lot of friends there.

'I have no bitterness at all to Liverpool and they are still a club very close to my heart.

'It's well documented I don't like sitting on the bench, so let's hope things improve.'

Stuart Pearce has tipped Liverpool to clinch the all-important fourth Champions League slot this season.

Fresh from their outstanding midweek win over Juventus, Rafael Benitez's men head to Eastlands on Saturday knowing a draw would be enough to take them above Merseyside rivals Everton.

After being 11 points adrift of the Toffeemen at one stage, Liverpool have clawed their way back into contention with four wins in their last seven games, a run that has allowed them to take advantage of Everton's recent collapse.

And though Manchester City will be doing their utmost to hand Pearce his first victory since succeeding Kevin Keegan last month, the former England defender believes no matter what the outcome, the Anfield men will be celebrating at the season's end.

"Liverpool are a good side," said Pearce. "You have to be to reach the quarter-finals of the European Cup.

"They have got to get above Everton, not only from the rivalry factor but also from the financial standpoint of getting into the Champions League and I believe they will probably manage it."

Given the enormity of next Wednesday's decisive trip to Turin, it has been suggested it could be a good time for City to face the Reds, whose minds may drift elsewhere if the game does not go their way in the opening stages.

Pearce is not so sure. Recalling his own playing days, the Nottingham Forest legend thinks the games will only act as a spur to the Liverpool squad, and their performance levels could actually rise.

"They will be desperate to win this match," he said. "They have just beaten Juventus and have an excellent chance of getting through if they can nick an away goal.

"They are hitting form at the right time, are starting to peg Everton back and getting very close to sealing a place in the Champions League for next season. If I was a Liverpool player, I would be wanting to play in every match I possibly could."

For virtually the first time in his three games in charge, Pearce has selection options this weekend.

Ben Thatcher is back after a two-month absence with a hamstring problem, while Paul Bosvelt is available again after being ruled out of last weekend's trip to Charlton for family reasons.

Steve McManaman will be held back for another week as he looks to recover from his own hamstring injury and while there is no definitive date for Shaun Wright-Phillips' return, Pearce reported good news from the training ground.

"Shaun has had a couple of hard training sessions this week and a particularly hard one on Wednesday which he has come through without a reaction," he said.

"We don't know when he will be back, it is fairer on the lad to take it day-by-day. Hopefully when he is back in contention, the team are winning and I do not have to change it."

The final comment was delivered with Pearce's tongue firmly locked into his cheek, even if City's displays at Tottenham and Charlton are vastly improved on the sterile efforts that characterised Keegan's last few months in charge.

What they have not delivered are results, with late goals in both games costing City a draw and a win respectively.

"We should have gained more points than we have but there is no point bellyaching about that," said Pearce.

"But the players can draw confidence from their performances, particularly the one at Charlton.

"There has been a steady improvement over the two games but we need to carry it on. There is no point sitting there saying 'didn't we do well on Saturday, what a pity we didn't get the win'.

"You have got to look at things match by match and try to improve. Isolate your mistakes and try to eradicate them, and improve the things you are good at. That is the nature of football."

It is a likely situation where Baros leave and Owen returns.
We need 4 tops strikers though so I would be glad if Baros doesn't leave.

Valencia 'negotiating' Baros transfer
Valencia president Juan Soler claims he is in talks with Liverpool striker Milan Baros.

Soler told Valencia-based Radio 9 that the Czech Republic international was one of several targets for the summer as the Spanish side attempt to strengthen following a disappointing season.

He said: 'We are negotiating with the Czech (Baros) and with four or five players of the same quality.

'These players are from Europe and South America and we are trying to do things in plenty of time, both with Baros and with the others.'

Baros had a successful European Championships last year but has struggled for consistency for the Reds this season.

The 23-year-old, who arrived at Anfield in 2001 from Banik Ostrava, has previously been linked to moves away from the Premiership.

Valencia are rebuilding after Claudio Ranieri's unsuccessful spell as manager. The former Chelsea boss embarked on a spending spree in the summer with the likes of Marco Di Vaio, Bernardo Corradi and Stefano Fiore all arriving at the Mestalla.

But the policy of recruiting Italian players failed to reap the required rewards and Ranieri was sacked.

And Soler admitted several members of the first team squad would be leaving at the end of the current campaign.

He added: 'Some of the players who are coming are going to replace those who are already here, so it is for the best that we do not speak too much about the subject.

'I don't want the team to lose concentration as we aim for our objective of returning to Europe.'

XABI PRAISES LIVERPOOL FANS
Steve Hunter 08 April 2005
Xabi Alonso says he can't wait to put on a first team jersey again and praised the Liverpool fans for giving him a fantastic reception during the Juventus game on Tuesday.
Alonso says he was touched by the reaction from the Liverpool fans when he warmed up on the touchline and added the goodwill messages from fans has helped him during a frustrating three months on the sidelines.

Alonso said: "It was great for me to be back and on the bench against Juventus at Anfield. I would have loved to have been involved on the pitch but the fans gave me a great reception. They are fantastic and showed they hadn't forgotten about me.

"A few injured players are coming back and the manager has options. Being out has been frustrating because three months without playing is a long time.

"There is still a lot that could go right for us this season because there are still a lot of things to be decided. It is vital to be available and play my part. I never set a date for my comeback and I will sit down with Rafa and discuss what happens now. We will see about City. Turin? Of course I would love to be involved.

"It was a great performance on Tuesday. The atmosphere was incredible and although in the end the result could have been better we are still confident for the second leg."

PELLEGRINO LOVING LIFE AT ANFIELD
Steve Hunter 08 April 2005
Maurico Pellegrino says he is thoroughly enjoying life with Liverpool and has thanked the Reds supporters for making him feel very welcome at Anfield.
The 33-year-old defender is a consumate professional and he brings great experience to the team. He firmly believes Rafael Benitez will bring the good times back to Anfield.

Pellegrino said: "I have settled in well. I am very happy because this is a new experience for me and my family. I am learning the customs of people and learning a new language and getting to know my team-mates better. This is a wonderful experience for me and I will try to show the best Pellegrino I can for Liverpool.

"The Liverpool supporters have been great with me. When I speak to people on the street they tell me about Liverpool and how special the club is. I know that Liverpool is a big club and for me this is a great opportunity in my life.

"The derby against Everton was a very good experience for me. The fans in the stadium were fantastic and everybody was shouting and jumping. It was a very different atmosphere than Spain and more like it is in Argentina and I like that. For me it was a very nice experience and I will never forget this match.

"When you get to 33 years of age you don't normally get this kind of opportunity like I have. Benitez knows me and I know his staff. I know his way of working and the training and for me it's more easy. I need to improve more every day and all the players want to improve always.

"I feel Benitez will bring trophies to Liverpool. This club has very good players and I think in the future Liverpool will win trophies."

While growing up in Argentina Pellegrino was well aware of Liverpool's standing in world football as he used to read football books about Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Pellegrino said: "I know the Liverpool history and know they have won a lot of trophies including four European Cups. I know about Bill Shankly and back home in Argentina I used to read a lot about Shankly and Bob Paisley. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be here at Liverpool."

Fans may have noticed that Pellegrino is very vocal on the pitchand he says that is important to encourage team-mates and the younger players in the team.

Pellegrino said: "For me always when you put on the Liverpool shirt you must do as well as you can. It is compulsory to give your maximum possibility whether it be in the reserve match or the first team. I have experience and I try to help the younger players."

His contract is up at the end of the season but Pellegrino says he would love to extend it. The player has fallen in love with Liverpool and would love to stay at Anfield to be a part of the great things he says Rafael Benitez will achieve at this club.

Pellegrino said: "I would love to stay with Liverpool. I enjoy coming into this club every day and I love my profession. I love football and I enjoy the training sessions with my team-mates and I want to do my best for Liverpool."

Real Madrid's Owen fancies Liverpool return

Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has dropped a major hint he'd welcome a return to Liverpool in the summer.

England striker Owen, 25, is still struggling to cement a first-team spot after last year's £8million move to Real Madrid. And he is desperate for more minutes on the pitch in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup finals.

Owen said: "Would I return to Liverpool? I would have nothing against it if I had to move for one reason or another.

"I left Liverpool on good terms and they are still the first result I look out for. They are still a club very close to my heart."

"I don't like sitting on the bench and I have been substitute a bit since Christmas. So let's hope things improve."

RAFA'S ADMIRATION FOR FOWLER
Steve Hunter 08 April 2005

Rafael Benitez says he is a great admirer of the striking talents of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler and added he hopes he has a quiet day in front of goal when the Reds visit Manchester City.
Fowler has scored 10 goals for Manchester City this season and was man of the match when he scored in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic. He hit an injury time equaliser in the corresponding fixture against Liverpool at the City of Manchester Stadium last season which finished up 2-2.

Benitez said: "I know Robbie is a very good player and a very good finisher. I just hope he has a quiet game tomorrow and then scores a lot of goals after our match!"

The Liverpool manager feels it will be a tough game in Manchester against a City team working hard for new manager Stuart Pearce.

Benitez said: "When you change the manager normally you find the players work hard and try to do well. We go into the game with confidence but we need to be careful because I am sure they will play with a high tempo and it will be difficult.

"I remember the game against Manchester City earlier this season being very difficult. They went 1-0 up but we had a very good second half and won the game 2-1. They played good football and worked very hard.

"We know that we are playing well and we want to do the same against Manchester City. We are one point behind Everton and we know we can put pressure on them if we win."

BENITEZ CONCERNED BY BAROS REPORT

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has suggested his former club Valencia may have been guilty of an illegal approach to Czech striker Milan Baros.

Juan Soler, the president of the Spanish club, told a local radio station that they were "negotiating" with Baros, even though he has two years left to run on his contract with Liverpool.

Benitez, who did not leave Valencia on the best of terms last summer, turned up the heat on his old club.

He said: "It is illegal to talk to a player with two more years of his contract to go.

"I prefer not to talk about these things, and I need to discuss this with people at this club.

"But the situation is that he is our player and has two more years of his contract with this club still to go.

"I am not worried about Baros. If what their president has said is true maybe it is time to ask them about the situation."

The Spaniard also played down talk of Michael Owen returning to Anfield from Real Madrid this summer.

The England striker revealed in a Shoot magazine interview that he would have "nothing against" moving back to the club he left in an £8million deal last summer, but Benitez was in no mood to discuss his summer plans.

"On Owen, whether I say yes or no then my words will be used how people want," he said.

"He is a good player but I prefer not to talk about players until the end of the season."

Benitez dealt with the issue of Steven Gerrard's future in unequivocal terms in a Belgian television interview after the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus in midweek.

"Let me be very clear about Gerrard. We are building a strong team here in the future and that will be a team with Gerrard," he insisted.

"We're not selling him for any money in the world. He is a local boy. A man of the club and he's our captain. We are not selling him."

When he had dealt with the transfer rumours, Benitez turned his attentions to Saturday's clash with Manchester City at Eastlands.

Victory would put Liverpool ahead of Everton in fourth place by two points and increase the pressure on the Toffees, who play Crystal Palace at Goodison Park 24 hours later.

Benitez, who will not include Xabi Alonso against City, preferring that his compatriot trains hard for three days before the Juventus trip, said: "I hope Everton are feeling the pressure.

"But that will only happen for real if we win our next game, but if you look at the last few weeks and see that the lead has been eight points, four and now one. I am sure they feel under pressure.

"This has been a good moment for us, a good week. But if we are winning we must still stay calm and under control because you must not think that everything is okay. That would be a big mistake.

"We have a lot of important games now and we will have to work harder to achieve what we want from here on to the end of the season.

"Maybe we could move above Everton now, but the first thing we must do is to win our next match at Manchester City. But if we do win 24 hours before Everton play, we know we can watch calmly and enjoy the game. But I repeat, we must win first.

"It would be fantastic if we did, but I won't talk about the future just yet. Then we can all sit and watch the TV with a cold Coke and relax!"

CISSE CLOSE TO RESERVE RETURN
Steve Hunter 08 April 2005
Djibril Cisse will play again this season after manager Rafael Benitez said the player has made great progress and could play for the reserves in the next 10 days.
The club's record signing has made remarkable progress and Benitez says he is working very hard and eager to get back. The Liverpool manager also said he won't rush Cisse back and will check with the club doctor Mark Waller and physio Dave Galley as to when he can play a game.

The reserves travel to Sunderland on Thursday, 14th April, followed by a home game against Blackburn at Wrexham on Monday, 18th April. Benitez says the player could figure in one of the mentioned games.

Benitez said: "Cisse said to me he wants to play for the reserves next week. I need to talk with the physio and the doctor but maybe he can play in the reserves next week and then the first team.

"We are surprised but very pleased to see him back because we were thinking maybe he could be back by the end of April, or the end of the season. He is working so hard in training.

"It is good for the future that players are working hard and are wanting to come back. It shows they have a good mentality and it is good for us."

ALONSO OUT BUT NANDO BACK FOR CITY
Steve Hunter 08 April 2005
Rafael Benitez says he won't risk Xabi Alonso at Manchester City on Saturday but gave a strong hint that striker Fernando Morientes could return to the starting line-up.
With Alonso just back from a broken ankle, and having only played 45 minutes for the reserves on Wednesday night the Liverpool manager wants to be careful with the player and not rush him back.

Morientes wasn't fit enough to start against Bolton last Saturday and appeared for the final 15 minutes as a substitute, but Benitez says he has trained well this week and could start against City.

Benitez said: "Morientes is training well and he is fit and he can play which is important for us.

"Xabi Alonso won't be in the squad because he needs to train and be ready for the next week. Xabi is working hard in training and he wants to be ready to play as soon as possible."

REDS COOL OVER OWEN
Liverpool Echo 08 April 2005

LIVERPOOL won't rush into giving Michael Owen an escape route from Real Madrid back to Anfield, despite having first option to resign the striker.

Owen was today quoted saying he'd welcome a return to Merseyside having been given few opportunities to show his class in Spain.

But despite being in the market for a striker this summer, Rafa Benitez isn't convinced his transfer resources should be allocated to bringing the former Kop idol home.

Not only would Real Madrid expect the £8m they paid for the 25-year-old, Owen's wages would make him a top earner at the club.

Benitez has been scouting other targets all season and, while noting Owen's comments, does not see this as the green light to launch what some may believe an inevitable swoop.

Owen is sure to attract interest from other Premiership clubs, with Newcastle currently leading the chase, and there is no doubt Liverpool will monitor developments closely.

However, Owen would have to accept a considerable reduction in salary if he wants a return to Anfield. That makes an emotional comeback an unlikely prospect at this stage.

The 25-year-old said today: "Would I return to Liverpool? I would have nothing against it if I had to move for one reason or another.

"I left Liverpool on good terms, they are still the first result I look out for and I have a lot of friends there.

"I have no bitterness at all to Liverpool and they are still a club very close to my heart.

"It's well documented I don't like sitting on the bench, so let's hope things improve."

Liverpool agreed the first refusal clause for Owen when he was sold last August, but there was no set fee within that deal.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Smicer admits he's resigned to leaving Anfield at the end of the season after the club made no approach to renew his Liverpool contract.

Smicer has been linked to former club Lens, but could remain in England.

BIG SAM: DIOUF DEAL IN DANGER
SKY Sports 08 April 2005

Sam Allardyce claims El Hadji Diouf's hot temper could cost him a permanent move to Bolton Wanderers.

The Liverpool loanee has impressed and is a cult hero at The Reebok Stadium and the Merseysiders are known to be keen on selling the Senegal striker.

Bolton would offer the perfect move for the African attacker but Allardyce has warned that any deal is far from a formality.

"I think that's still to be resolved," he told Sky Sports News. "There's a lot of elements now that will have to be discussed, not just at my level but at board level and chairman level at a club like ours, to actually progress in that area and whether it's the right thing to do or not.

"I mean there's 99.9 percent of time that he's fantastic, it's just the 0.01 percent, the flashpoint in his make-up and in his DNA that's difficult for him to control. And it's difficult for us to say we can ever overcome that scenario and it will not happen again.

"He has a flashpoint in his temperament that explodes at any given time. Unfortunately, neither he nor us knows when that is going to happen."

Allardyce did pay tribute to the impact Diouf has made since his switch to Bolton.

"I think that we're not the same team without him," conceded the Trotters boss. "We're very good but we lose that little bit of flair, that extra edge that is needed to break the opposition down and to create chances either for yourself or someone else.

"I hope when he comes back he can strike the same sort of form as before we lost him."

Matthew Upson has told Birmingham that he will wait until the summer before continuing talks over a new contract at St Andrews.
The England international is entitled to a new deal having clocked up 60 appearances since moving to the Midlands, after failing to secure regular football at Highbury.
However, with both Liverpool and former club Arsenal reportedly monitoring the situation, Upson is reluctant to rush contract talks.
Upson still has three years left on his current contract and Blues manager Steve Bruce has been keen to underplay talk of other clubs' interest in his accomplished stopper.
''I want to put the record straight about Matty. We had discussions with him a month ago regarding his contract,'' said Bruce.
"He has got three years to run on his contract. We have him for a year plus another two-year option.
"Effectively we have him for three seasons after this season but, after the way he has been playing, we have wanted to extend that deal.
"We put an offer to Matt and that offer has been discussed, and to be fair to Matt he has said 'let us get on with the rest of the season and let's talk again in the summer'.
"Everyone is happy with the situation. Those discussions went well and he indicated that he is very happy with his football here. That's the situation and I've thought nothing more of it.
"As for all the speculation linking Matty with other clubs, I really don't know why it is all happening."

Nowhere is better than here at Anfield
Apr 8 2005
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

THE leaving of Liverpool has grieved players less in recent seasons.

Now, Rafa Benitez is determined to ensure the only stars departing under his leadership are those he's forcibly led to the door.

The Anfield boss says Anthony Le Tallec has become both a positive and negative example for any member of his squad believing greener grass lies elsewhere.

The 20-year-old midfielder asked to move last summer, only to request a comeback in January after a miserable return to France.

Benitez's sense of forgiveness paid off in midweek when Le Tallec excelled in the famous win over Juventus.

Now the Spanish coach hopes the youngster's experience will serve as a warning to those considering their options at the end of the season.

"When players choose to leave Liverpool, they may believe they are going somewhere where it will be better for them, but they realise later that's not the case," said Benitez today.

"At other clubs, maybe you can win more money. There are a lot of big clubs competing for the title, it's true, but I'm sure there is nowhere with the same atmosphere as Liverpool.

"The relationship between the club and the supporters is different to anywhere else. You can talk to players like Mauricio Pellegrino or Fernando Morientes about this.

"These are players who have spent a long time at a big, important club, but they have told me how they feel the atmosphere here is completely different. It's important for all the players we have to want to stay here for as long as possible because it's not better elsewhere."

Benitez's comments not only apply to Le Tallec, but should resonate with numerous play-ers mulling over delicate contract situations.

The likes of Igor Biscan and Didi Hamann are out of contract in June. Sami Hyypia enters his final year next season, while rumours persist Everton are trying to persuade Djimi Traore to cross the park in July.

Benitez hopes the pride of remaining Liverpool players is enough motivation to ensure they work hard to stay - even if some are offered only short term extensions.

He's heartened by their recent response, with no-one typifying the improvement in attitude more than Le Tallec.

"I think Le Tallec has shown a good example to some more of our young players," said Benitez, with the kind of comment even he must have considered unlikely last summer.

"They can see you can get into the first team if you work hard. You don't need to leave for another team. If you work hard at Liverpool, it's possible to get your chance.

"We've always known Le Tallec is a good player, and now he has returned a different player to the one who left in the summer.

"The most important thing for us was knowing how much he wanted to come back and work hard. I hope he has learned a lot from his experience this season."

"When we spoke to him before the game on Tuesday we told him this was a big opportunity. You never know in football when you're going to get the same chance to play in such a match again.

"I've told him to be ready because we need all the players we have and I'm not looking at the passports or dates of birth when I decide who to play."

The Reds travel to Manchester City tomorrow with a familiar warning from the boss.

Victory over Juventus was as well and good, but it will taste stale if the performance isn't repeated on league duty.

"It's very important to play in exactly the same way," says Benitez, who is mulling over Xabi Alonso's fitness ahead of the trip.

"Our challenge remains getting in the top four. It was easy to be motivated for Juventus. This game is different and players must realise how important it is to keep winning.

"If the players want to experience more games like the one against Juventus, they must perform in the same way in the Premiership.

"We don't want to enjoy a victory over Juventus and then lose our chance to be in the Champions League next year. We need to be in the top four."

Alonso is likely to find himself on the bench again at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Jerzy Dudek will undergo a fitness test on his injured groin, while Benitez is contemplating whether to save one of his centre-halves for the trip to Turin.

Liverpool are looking to match their best Premiership run of the campaign by winning their third consecutive league game.

"The players understand the importance of our situation," said Benitez.

"We've fought back from 12 points behind. We always said it wasn't impossible. Each week changes the position.

"Even if it goes to the final game, we may be able to change positions with Everton, if they're still in front of us."

I rather Owen sucks and sulk @ RM than him coming back and leaving for another 'big' club. Let only those who wear the crest proudly on their chest stay in pool like JC, Cisses and even Nando. SG should leave also if his heart is in London instead of Anfield.

Is Bolton boss mad ?

Bolton boss: We'll go for Real Madrid's Owen

Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce has confirmed he'll go for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen in the summer.

Allardyce said: "If Michael Owen was available, he would be first on our list.

"You wonder whether he would want to come and play for us and there would be an obvious problem with his wages and transfer fee.

"But Michael Owen is an England international and the best goalscorer we will have for a long time to come. It would be an achievement if were even to consider us.

"We already have two former Real Madrid players here in Fernando Hierro and Ivan Campo, so you could never actually write off the fact we might get a third!

"To have any chance at all, we would have to qualify for Europe. After that, who knows?

"Regular first-team football is important for most players. Money becomes secondary when you are sitting on the bench every week or sat in the stand.

"Michael Owen is a matchwinner. If he is not getting that adrenalin rush often enough, he probably wants it back."

ALDO: BEST ANFIELD ATMOSPHERE SINCE 94
Paul Rogers 09 April 2005
Former Liverpool favourite John Aldridge has described the atmosphere at Anfield against Juventus as the best he's witnessed since the ground became an all-seater stadium.
Aldridge progressed from a fan cheering on the Reds to the club's star striker and now, working for local radio, the former Republic of Ireland international reveals his we amazed at the passion showed by the home supporters.

"The atmosphere at Anfield on Tuesday was the best I have ever experienced since the Kop became all-seater. I am in no doubt it played a key role in the side's performance and it also knocked Juventus out of their stride.

"Liverpool's performance in the opening 45 minutes as magnificent and another example of what a great tactician Rafael Benitez is, particularly in Europe.

"That display is put into context by the fact Juve had only conceded two goals in their previous eight Champions League games. Now the Reds must do their utmost to ensure they make the most of their advantage by refusing to allow what is sure to be a fiercely partisan crowd in Turin to knock them out of their stride.

"It would be wrong to go there looking to hold on to the lead they have built up. There is too much quality in the Juve side to expect them not to score at home. Which means a goal is vital. But if the side shows the same drive and desire demonstrated in the first leg why shouldn't they do what they need to do?

"The first goal will be the key but the fact is we have given ourselves a great chance to progress."

PELLEGRINO IMPRESSED WITH CARRA
Steve Hunter 09 April 2005
Mauricio Pellegrino claims he has been impressed with Jamie Carragher and believes the Bootle-born defender will be a key player at Liverpool for many years to come.
The Argentine has revealed that Carragher's attitude and will to win has impressed him greatly since his arrival.

Pellegrino said: "For me, Jamie is a very good defender. He is very quick and very strong. He has a great stamina, more than a lot of players, and I like playing alongside him. I think in Jamie Liverpool has a defender who will be here for a long time."

Pellegrino also joked Carragher's scouse tones can be quite difficult to understand at times.

"Carra is difficult to understand, yes!" laughed Pellegrino. "He is funny and it is quite difficult to understand the scouse accent at times."

CITY STRIKE LATE TO DENT CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HOPES
Lee Brown 09 April 2005
Liverpool have missed the chance to overtake Everton in 4th place after a last minute goal from Musampa sent them crashing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City today.
The Reds had looked set to take 4th place on goal difference, but they were sunk by Musampa's late strike and they now face the prospect of seeing Everton again extend their lead to four points when they play Crystal Palace tomorrow.

Rafa's men will be devastated to have conceded so late on, but it was only the agility of Scott Carson that had kept them in the game before that.

Carson took the blame for his mistake that gave Juventus their goal at Anfield on Tuesday, but he more than made amends with a series of stops that will restore any confidence lost.

His first save came after just 10 minutes when he reacted brilliantly to hold Distin's effort and he was alert again to save at the feet of Sibierski as half time approached.

At the other end, the game unfortunately mirrored a number of other disappointing away performances for Rafa's men as they failed to carve out any meaningful chances and ex-Red David James will have enjoyed a comfortable afternoon.

And they required the sharp relexes of Carson again in the 65th minute when he tipped Musampa's fierce drive against the post.

The Reds could have snatched the points late on when Steven Gerrard could only find the side netting when well placed, but that might have been harsh on a City side beginning to play well for caretaker boss Stuart Pearce.

City secured their win under Pearce with Musampa's late strike, but it was a goal that will have more significance on Liverpool's season.

It is perhaps apt that on Grand National day Liverpool have fallen when they had to chance to take 4th place, but we will hope that they still have the stamina to stay the course of the marathon Premiership season.

Dissapointing result. a draw would haf been gd considering our superior goal difference.

The effort is there...but again sadly, the quality is not there yet.

Liverpool's Remaining fixtures

Liverpool v Tottenham,
Portsmouth v Liverpool,
Crystal Palace v Liverpool,
Liverpool v Middlesbrough,
Arsenal v Liverpool,
Liverpool v Aston Villa,

Everton's Remaining Matches

Everton v Crystal Palace,
Arsenal v Everton
Everton v Man Utd
Everton v Birmingham
Fulham v Everton
Everton v Newcastle
Bolton v Everton

We must win all our remaining home games to haf a chance. We are going to struggle away from home against the likes of Portsmouth(This shouldn't be happening :s11: ) and Arsenal. Expect some fight from Palace as well.

Home games...ain't walk in the park either. Spurs, Boro, Villa~Mid table teams that can produce unexpected results

Everton, too have tough fixtures. Away to Arsenal, Home to Man Utd, Away to Bolton, ...otherwise I expect them to win their remaining fixtures.

Conclusion:

Expect Everton to win tml.
Then it'll be a 4 pts gap again.
Assuming that Everton takes 9 points from the last 6 games, and Liverpool taking 13 points(Trying to be very optimistic here :o ), we should be able to catch Everton on virtue of goal difference. But we need favours from teams like Arsenal, ManU, and Bolton to knock them out. At the same time, we must not fall to teams like Portsmouth, Palace and Villa. Or else next season, we will most probably be seeing only 3 English teams competing in the Champions League(As it is likely Everton will be knocked out in the preliminary stage if it qualify this season :D )

DISAPPOINTED RAFA: WE CAN STILL GET 4TH
Mark Platt 09 April 2005
A deeply disappointed Rafael Benitez lamented Liverpool's failure to take at least one point from this afternoon's defeat at Manchester City but backed his players to still clinch fourth spot in the Premiership.
The Reds went down to a late Kiki Musampa strike at the City of Manchester Stadium and consequently missed out on the opportunity to move above Everton in the table.

"If you cannot win, it's important to draw. We conceded a poor goal that came from our throw-in and we must learn from that if we are to finish in fourth place," said Benitez afterwards.

"We didn't play well in the first half and lost the ball too easily. In the second half we started with a good mentality, controlled the game and Gerrard had a clear opportunity but didn't score.

"It's difficult to explain why we play so well in one game then the next we don't.

"The players know the importance of finishing in the top four and, if we play to the same level we have shown in the Champions League, I still believe we can."

Liverpool's Champions League heroics against Juventus were forgotten as Kiki Musampa's last-minute strike have Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory.

Nedum Onuoha fells Liverpool's John Arne Riise (NealSimpson/Empics)

Rafa blasts late lapse

Despite being outplayed for much of the contest, and surviving a superb Musampa second-half volley which crashed back off a post, Rafael Benitez's men looked like hanging on for the point that would temporarily have taken them above Merseyside rivals Everton.

But, after seeing his side concede late goals in his first two games in charge, it was Stuart Pearce's turn to celebrate as Lee Croft, thrown on for Paul Bosvelt 20 minutes from time, found space inside the visitors box and picked out Musampa with a superb cross.

There was still plenty of work to do for the on-loan Dutchman but he proved equal to the task, drilling a first-time effort past Scott Carson to give City the win they deserved.

It was the worst possible send-off for Liverpool's decisive trip to Turin, but Benitez will be more bothered by the knowledge Everton will move four points clear of his side if they beat struggling Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The goal also significantly enhanced Pearce's chances of succeeding Kevin Keegan on a long-term basis and the former England skipper has reason to look back on the contest with an immense amount of pride.

Pearce called on the home fans to `raise the roof' for his first game in charge, and the former England skipper made sure the players kept their side of the bargain as City hit Liverpool with an enthusiastic early barrage.

Their efforts might have brought some reward if there had been more composure behind the final ball, but too often it went astray.

Two men exempt from criticism both had special reason to shine. As born and bred Merseysiders, Robbie Fowler and Joey Barton both relish the opportunity to dazzle against Liverpool, so it was no surprise they were the pick of City's bunch.

Fowler maintained his excellent recent form with a series of well-timed runs, astute passes and delicate flicks, while Barton, adopted a more robust approach, coming out on top in a series of heavy tackles as well as creating City's best two chances of the opening period.

It was the midfielder's early free-kick which dropped on the head of skipper Sylvain Distin, but though the big defender made a firm contact, Carson, preferred to Jerzy Dudek despite his midweek error, got across to make the save.

The former Leeds keeper should have been made to work much harder when Barton floated a far post cross into Musampa's path midway through the half, only for the Atletico Madrid man to completely mi**** a volley that bobbled harmlessly wide.

In those opening stages, Liverpool looked a lacklustre outfit. Given their draining midweek exertions it was perhaps not surprising, but slowly it seemed to dawn on them that offering Everton the initiative in the battle for fourth place should not have been part of their script.

Largely though, Distin and central defensive partner Richard Dunne stayed strong, repelling the threat of Fernando Morientes and Anthony Le Tallec with something to spare.

One superb clearance by Dunne from John Arne Riise's low cross caught the eye, although it was David James Liverpool were really cursing for costing them an interval lead.

Despite the wet conditions, it could be argued the England keeper was slightly sloppy in letting Igor Biscan's 25-yard shot slip from his grasp. But just as Le Tallec looked set to smash home the rebound, James redeemed himself, stretching a foot out to prod the ball away from the Frenchman.

After a largely anonymous first half, Steven Gerrard was quick to make an impact in the second, drilling Riise's far-post cross just over.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Gerrard could not sustain his superiority as his old schoolmate Barton slowly took command again.

The Huyton-born player may still have some recklessness in his game but he is also becoming more effective and had it not been for Steve Finnan's last-ditch clearance, his third pinpoint cross of the contest would have provided Antoine Sibierski with a tap-in 20 minutes from time.

Before that, Musampa had smashed his volley against the post, probably meeting Nedum Onouha's cross too well after the young full-back had galloped down the wing at Reyna's invitation.

But just as it looked like City were going to be forced to settle for a draw, up popped Musampa to deliver the killer blow.

Rafa blasts late lapse

Disappointed Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has warned his players to start learning some harsh lessons otherwise they can forget about landing a Champions League berth next season.

Just five days after their thrilling win over Juventus, the Reds looked likely to collect a point from their below-par display at Manchester City until Kiki Musampa's last-minute winner gave the Blues a deserved win.

Benitez lambasted his team's failure not to kill the game in the latter stages as they gifted Bradley Wright-Phillips possession at a throw-in close to the halfway line.

Wright-Phillips ferried the ball on to fellow substitute Lee Croft, whose cross provided Musampa with the opportunity to strike.

'I am very disappointed,' said Benitez. 'Sometimes, when you cannot win, a draw is a good result. We were in the last minute, we had a throw-in, then we give the ball away, they counter and we end up losing a goal.

'It is more important for us to finish fourth in the Premiership than it is to do well in the Champions League.

'If we play to the level we can, we can still get there but if we do not improve on the mental approach we had today, it will be difficult for us.'

The 1-0 defeat that keeps Liverpool a point adrift of Everton in the battle for fourth spot, with their Merseyside rivals set to take a decisive advantage if they can turn Crystal Palace over at Goodison Park tomorrow.

Anything other than a home win would have been tough luck on Pearce, who has watched City concede late goals in his two previous games in charge since succeeding Kevin Keegan.

With Steven Gerrard, whose future Benitez refused to discuss, in subdued mood, Joey Barton dominated the midfield exchanges and had Musampa not crashed a volley against the post midway through the second period, the Blues would have already been in front before the Dutchman's crucial strike.

'It is poetic justice after what has happened in the last two weeks,' said Pearce, who denied reports he has already been appointed Keegan's permanent successor.

'Liverpool are a big scalp. They are on a good run of form. I watched them in midweek and they played Juventus off the park.

'But I have not got the job yet. The chairman has taken a big gamble putting an amateur in charge but hopefully I will prove to him I am up to the task.'

Pearce did need the big hand of goalkeeping coach Tim Flowers to save him from potential embarrassment as he headed straight down the tunnel at the final whistle before even attempting to shake hands with Benitez.

'I was always like that as a player,' he said.

'I never shook hands with anyone, I was always straight off the pitch. Thankfully Tim Flowers has got big claws and managed to pull me back. I apologise if Mr Benitez felt there was ignoring him. I just got carried away with the moment.'

Flowers' task will not be as hard as the one Benitez now faces lifting Liverpool for Wednesday's vital trip to Turin.

Aside from the emotion generated by the visit, the Anfield outfit must also defend their slender first-leg advantage and the Spanish coach knows his team will have to do far better than they did today.

'Our inconsistency is difficult to explain,' he admitted.

'At one point we are playing good football and winning, the next we find it really difficult.

'But I don't think there will be a problem raising the team for Wednesday. Champions League games are different - we will be ready.'

Steven Gerrard's Liverpool future is the subject of renewed speculation amid reports he has agreed to join Chelsea in the summer.
Reports in the media claim an unnamed Premiership manager has let the cat out of the bag by revealing the midfielder will move to Stamford Bridge in a £30 million deal.
Gerrard spurned the chance to head to the capital last summer but, if reports are to be believed, he will grasp the second opportunity to sign for The Blues.
Though there has been no fresh bid from Chelsea, it is claimed the England international has concurred on a switch to the champions-elect at the end of the season.
The latest bout of speculation is certain to infuriate Liverpool, who are hellbent on keeping their talismanic skipper at Anfield.
Earlier this week, Reds boss Rafa Benitez stressed the importance of retaining the services of Gerrard for the long term.
Speaking after the 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory over Juventus on Tuesday, Benitez reiterated his stance that the club will not cash in on their captain.
"Let me be very clear about Gerrard," said Benitez.
"We are building a strong team here for the future and that will be a team with Gerrard at its centre.
"We are not selling him for any money in the world.
"He is a local boy, a man of the club and is our captain.
"We are not selling him."
But despite Benitez's insistence that Gerrard is not leaving Merseyside, reports persist that the club will pocket a £30 million windfall from moneybags Chelsea in the summer.

Rafa Benitez conceded Liverpool could not afford to lose at Manchester City as their pursuit of Everton was hampered.
Kiki Musampa scored a last-minute winner for City at Eastlands, with Reds boss Benitez disappointed with the outcome.
Liverpool could have leapfrogged Everton if they had avoided defeat at The City of Manchester Stadium and Benitez was left to rue the result that got away.
"The question is if you want to reduce the gap you need to win or maybe draw," said Benitez.
"You can not afford to lose this kind of game."
Benitez was unhappy with his team's first half performance and wondered whether his side lacked the experience to claim at least a point.
He added: "We played maybe too wide in the first half. In the second half we started controlling the game with the team more compact.
"There was a clear chance at the end for Steven Gerrard but then there was a throw-in for us, we lose the ball and concede the goal in the last minute.
"We played too wide and they ran, they worked hard in the first half. We had some chances on the counter attack but we never controlled the game.
"In the second half there were more opportunities to go into the box.
"At the end if you don't score maybe you need to draw. We don't maybe have this experience."

was so damn disappointed by Pool's performance...
was hoping that it could win or at least draw, but instead as usual it lost again...
we have a huge rebuilding process to be done...

*somemore to add...

by looking at Pool's coming fixtures I think we have a hard time instead of Everton...

while Everton is pressured to maintain its fourth spot...
we're pressured to maintain our consistency...

if all these disappointing performances keeps repeating, we can say goodbye to CL.

well, first and foremost, i cant understand why pallegrino is in the 1st eleven. he's way too slow and he jus get in other defenders way. his passing is also terrible, even a guy his size couldnt able to handle the physical demands of the premiership. hyypia is way better, way more composed and the defense is way more secure wif carra and hyypia ard.

traore as left winger? the questions will nvr stop...

jus purely disappointed, jus tot we can overtake everton and everything comes crashing down.

no choice bah
dat's y we nid rebuilding and not improving the team.

let me define rebuilding
Rebuilding is the process of dismantling a unit and building a new and stronger unit from scratch.

Along the way, we are going to suffer results like the 1 at Man City last nite. It'll continue. BUT IT'LL STOP SOMEWAY, SOMEHOW, for I believe that when the rebuilding process is completed, WE'LL BE BACK TO WHERE BILL SHANKLY ENVISONED:

"My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea and he conquered the bloody world! And that's what I wanted. For Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in."

Let's walk on...walk on...with hope...in your heart...
