thanks, so you will go with staying over at Port Campbell, rather than AB? What time should we visit the 12 apostles in the morning to avoid the chinese infantry?
Yes. Stay at PC rather than AB though PC seems more boring than AB.

please do check if there's any holidays in aussie before u decide to stay at PC.
most of the restaurants closes early the day before the holiday and the whole day during.

the only store left open was really bad... really really bad.... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran..._Victoria.html

do try room 6 if you can and give us a review heard their breakfast is good !

sry to dig up this thread. Do you guys think this 2D1N self-drive is do-able?

Day 1
8.30am-Leave Melbourne
10.00am-Torquay (surf shops, surf museum, coffee break)
11.30am-Apollo Bay (Lunch + explore)
1.00pm-Great Otways National Park
4.00pm-Cape Oatway (lighthouse)
6.00pm-Port Campbell (see 12 apostles, Gibson steps), then overnight at port campbell

Day 2
8.30am-12 Apostles/gibson steps again
10.00am-Chocolate factory/winery/early lunch (any leads/recommendations?)
1pm-back to melbourne via princes highway

I'm also wondering if we should stayover at Apollo Bay or Port Campbell. If stay at AB, we will have to leave early morning on day 2 morning in order to reach the 12 Apostles before the tourists buses. Any views?
i dont think u should go at 6pm to see the 12 apostles.. prob too dark, nothing to see.

Apollo bay, yeah think 1.5 hrs - 2 hrs max
view of the town:

beach:

also, dont think PC or apollo bay has any choc factories, prob would have to go to philliip island for that ?

for food, i think i ate at the Apollo Bay Seafood Cafe
Seafood platter i think?

and The Bay Leaf Apollo Bay
this should be the chicken burger (good!)

Regarding otway lighthouse. We reach the reception, realised that we still need to walk quite a distance before we can see it. The admission price is also to me too high. The couple in front and my family did not go ahead. It was fortunate we skip seeing the lighthouse because we were the last group admitted (ard 4:15pm, in february) to the otway treetop walk, our next destination. We did not see any birds or anything extraordinary. Just trees and trees. Again i suggest you check the price for this treetop walk. In singapore its free.

Regarding the treetop walk for the Otways, I skipped it as well. Opted for the more serene surroundings of the Lorne-Angahook Park.

In terms of attraction for treetop walks, Valley of the Giants, WA is a much better option.

hehe, not planning to drive up to GOR and phillip island yourself?

anyway, i dont think federation sq has anything much....and food there looks pretty pricey imo. maybe u can do lunch at chinatown on 02/8 instead?

for lygon st... the ice cream is a must try ! think it's called IL dolce freddo.. cheap and awesome!!!!

for queen vic market, i don't think you'll need 5 hours there and i think it's better to go in the morning instead.

Yeah i thought of driving to outskirt of Melb but considering we have only 2 persons.. seem like not very economical.

Uhm may i know why is it better to go QVM in the morning? I reckon we might be buying stuff there and don't have to carry to museum.

The ice cream on Lygon St.. is it easy to spot?

erm, cos in my point of view, it is still a market after-all, so there are prob more things to see in the morning. also, if you're staying in the city, you can prob go back to ur hotel to just drop off ur stuff and then head to the museum. oh i think the qvm is closed on mondays n wednesdays.. do check if it's opened before u go.....

as for the ice cream, should be pretty easy to spot

if you're walking to lygon st from russel st, it's on the right side of the the steet. should be 2-3 shops from the thai restaurant.
did i mention that it's cheap and good?

Hey guys,

What are the "must-visit" places in the city? Any recommendations for cheap and good eats?

I will be staying near Fliders Station, what's nice around the hotel? Are there any coles/woolsworth nearby?

Actually, what are the touristy places that will require me to take the train?

Appreciate any helpful advices. Many thanks!!

Should I visit PC for 2D1N or Yarra Valley (Morning go nite return)? Any accomodation that is reasonable at AUD200? Will driving Mini copper be dangerous or an easy target for theft?

hi guys, just made a booking for a car in melb from thrifty. Can I check if the GPS that we rent from them are easy to use, especially when it comes to searching for POIs? OR should I use my own local GPS and get an Australia map installed?

I loan the map from Marbella (free). Just a microSD card and it works fine.
Also before you go you can install addresses of all places you want to visit.
I heard renting from them for a week --the cost can pay for a GPS over here.
