I would go Rottnest to see the quokkas and cycle if you have never been although it is expensive. Caversham has nothing much imho.

Definitely don't bother with Perth Zoo or Penguin Island - unless you're going to be there for weeks, and have run out of things to do.

Rottnest really depends on what you're after - although keep in mind that it can be quite costly to go there.

IMHO Caversham is good for kids and first time visitors to Australia. It's run to encourage children to interact with animals. However, Perth zoo is the easiest to access from Perth CBD as it's at South Perth, a ferry ride away from Elizabeth Quay. So depends on your plans. Caversham is about 30 mins drive from Perth CBD.

Just returned from a 7 days trip last night.. Sharing my experience shortly.. this is my 2nd time travelling but this time with my broinlaw family too and was much more fruitful than the 1st one 4 years ago.

TL: DR, so will try to paragraph it.

Summary
Flight: SQ
Duration: 10 Jun 0005 to 16 June 2215 2017
Total Pax: 7 (4 Adults, 3 children)
Mode of Travel: Free and Easy, Kia Carinval from Hertz (w/ GPS and insurance).
Total damage about $1.4k AUD.
Visa: Done via Tam KANGaroo .. once again a very efficient team.

Itinerary:
Day 1 (Saturday):
(AM) Fremantle Market, Fremantle Prison then to Kailis for Lunch.
(PM) 3 hours drive to Magaret River Hideaway. Rating 6.5 for very solid clam chowder soup, full of fish inside.
(PM) Dinner @ Settlers Tavern. Rating 7/10 for very nice scotch fillet Steak.
(PM) nearby Coles for some supplies

Day 2 (Sunday):
(AM) Animal Feeding @ Hideaway
(AM) Shearing Shed for Sheep show etc..
(PM) Lunch @ Yallington the Maze (Didnt enter the maze)
(PM) Wonky Windmill Farm and Eco Park for more animal feeding etc.
(PM) Magaret River Chocolate & Co. A must go for chocolate sampling and shopping
(PM) Night. BBQ with stuff from Coles -> steaks 2 big pieces sirloin for only $14 AUD.. at least 500gm. Bacon, hotdog etc. not a lot.

Day 3 (Monday)
(AM) Horse Riding @ horse resort. Damage $98 AUD each.
(PM) Lunch @ Colonial Brewing. Bear and chips/salmon. Rating 6/10
(PM) Cape Leeuwin, Lighthouse. Breathtaking View !!

Day 4 (Tuesday)
(AM) Animal Feeding (again)
(AM) Busselton Jetty. underwater activity cancelled as they told us cannot see anything due to the weather
(PM) Lunch @ Equinox. Quite expensive with small portion. not recommended. 5/10
(PM) Apple picking @ Spring Valley Orchard.
(PM) Dinner @ Morries. 6.5 for super nice Thai pork belly. Price on the high side similar to Equinox. Not child friendly.

Day 5 (Wednesday)

(AM) Check out, into Perth City. To Kings Park direct for Lunch.
(PM) Lunch @ Lamia Cafe. 7/10 for big portion and nice food and huge variety.
(PM) Caversham Wildlife park. See snakes, pat Kangaroos, take picture with Koala.
(PM) Dinner @ new Garden Century near where we stayed (Best Western @ St James). Chinese restaurant. 5/10 for lousy chinese food (bland soup, slow service). But we are glad to have chinese food after a few days of western. pls avoid.

Day 6 (Thursday)

(AM) BF @ cafe outside apartment. Slow service but food was quite ok. 6/10
(AM) Drove 3 hours to the Pinnacles
(PM) Lunch @ Lobster Shack. highlight of the trip. Nice giant Lobster. 7.5/10 for very nice lobster and........ the fried rice :D
(PM) Reached pinnacles.. Awesome scenery. Took LOTS of pictures.
(PM) Went to Coles to hoot Tim Tam and Campbell premium soup.
(PM) Dinner @ Dusit Dheva Thai Food. shockingly good, even beats singapore thai restaurant. Must try. Rating 8/10

Day 7 (Friday)
(AM) Drove to nearby Perth Mint.
(PM) Lunch at another awesome place which we did not plan for. Just wack and went into this Cantonese tim sum restaurant YING with no regrets. 8/10. Easy beats overrated places like Tim ho Wan in singapore. Very nice char siew pau, porridge, chee cheong fun. Har Kao was not so good though.
(PM) Returned car at Hertz lot @ Terminal 1. Flew home and reached 11pm.

Few lessons learnt;
1. I took midnight flight and regretted it the first day. me and my bil was extremely tired and my eyes was closing during the walk at Fremantle Prison. Driving was a problem as i struggled to stay awake and remember 1 instance i drove across the lane marking, while my bil drove a bit too close to the edge. nothing really dangerous happened but it is a risk. Will not take night flight again if i need to drive once Reaching the airport.

2. Hertz GPS sucks big time.. it was really bad and i dunno really why.. a lot of places cannot locate and lost signal sometimes too. luckily got google map to backup but it was a waste of money renting the GPS.

3. The whole lot of us couldnt even start a fire in the fireplace inside hideaway and needed farmer andrew to show us.. great example too show how books dont teach you a lot of things.

Penguin Island is closed for winter if you're going in the next few months. Until end Sep then open, if I remember correctly.

1) no issues with red eye flight, just need to plan it such a way that you get some rest before any driving.

2) G.maps would have suffice if you seek advise from us here :)

3) Really depends, was it gas fire or real wood fire? Indeed it's something we don't have to do in SG

Technically no issue as i returned in 1 piece. But i would really not advise unless you are one that can really sleep inside a plane with NC headphones, else i wouldnt count on an afternoon nap to ensure you feel fresh after landing. but then it could be due to my age too, need more rest type :s13:

2) G.maps would have suffice if you seek advise from us here :)

there's some history to this but TLDR is that yes google map is much more reliable provided there is good signal. If i'm going with only my own family which they will not be a co-driver/navigator i still still prefer a backup device.

Real wood fire.. quite fun though i must say.

I like Mandurah too but personally don't find it very exciting.

Not really actually

Just spend 4D3N there recently and it's was wonderful.
Rented a house near the canel, like what we have here in sentosa cove.. $150 a night with 3 bedroom, fully equipped considering very cheap.

Fishing .. Feeding the birds and Swan..kayaking.. And watching dolphins swimming passby your door step.

Super relaxing and let down...

Hi all,

I'm going to Perth next month and read through the entire thread.

This will be the first time we are travelling to Perth and would appreciate your inputs on the itinerary (too pack/too loose, distance to drive too long, missed out any attractions etc). Travelling as a couple.

Also especially need help on day 7 & 8, if Truffle hunt or Lancelin Sand dunes are more worth the trip

Day 1: Touch down Perth Airport (1250pm), pick up rental from Hertz and head to Fremantle
- The Blue Boat House (Crawley Edge Boatshed)
- Fremantle Market
- Fremantle Prison
- Little Creatures Brewery

Day 2: Fremantle to Bunbury > Busselton > Dunsborough
- Busselton Jetty (only 1 thing for the day. Not sure what else to slot in)

Day3: Dunsborough
- Eagle Bay Brewery
- Cape naturalist
- Canal rocks
- Simmo Ice cream

Day 4: Dunsborough > Margaret River > Augusta
- Margaret River Choc Factory
- Margaret River Providore
- Cape Lavender
- Duckstein Brewery/ Leeuwin Estate / Voyager Estate (either one or two of them)

Day 5: Augusta
- Whale watching (2 hours in the morning)
- Hamelin Bay (Manta rays)
- Jewel caves

Day 6: Augusta > Pemberton > Walpole > Denmark > Albany (this day seems the most packed but all within short driving distance)
- Elephant rocks
- Bow Bridge
- Alpacca Farm
- Honey farm

Option 1: (this is where I need help on deciding)
Day 7: Albany to Manjimup
- Wind mill farms

Day 8 : Manjimup to Perth City
- Truffle Hunt and lunch at Truffle and Wine Co. (The truffle hunt must be on this day as they are only open friday - sunday for the hunt)
- King's park
- City stuff like shopping etc
- Crown casino

OR

Option 2:
Day 7: Albany > Manjimup > Perth City
- Wind mill farms
- Lunch at Truffle and Wine Co.
- King's Park
- City Stuff

Day 8 : Perth City > Pinnacles > Lancelin
- Pinnacles
- Lancelin Sand Dunes
- Lobster lunch

Day 9: Perth > SG
- Back to SG at 2pm flight. Any suggestions what to do in the morning, noting that we have to be at the airport at 12pm?

Thanks!

Opt7: City shopping nothing really much. But i'm a guy, so...

Opt8. If nature is yr thing, Pinnacles and lancelin. Otherwise everything looks the same all sand and stones.

Fremantle market not opened everyday.
Fremantle prison i recommend the night tours, but it is expensive. see if you can get discount coupons online or pick up a city map from the airport, there may be voucher.

Day 9: Perth > SG
- Back to SG at 2pm flight. Any suggestions what to do in the morning, nothing that we have to be at the airport at 12pm?
go as a couple shld spend more time in the hotel room :s12::s12:
