Government jobs not necessarily bad, but you will definitely learn things at a slower rate.

Everything all well established in a government setup which gives you very little opportunities to learn.. and even if there are, your vendors will usually be the ones doing the actual jobs, leaving you to do mainly co-ordination.... like this how to learn??

I've learnt that in a Government job, they don't pay you for your knowledge, experience or certifications to make decisions. They pay for your knowledge experience or certifications so that when they make decisions, you'll have no questions in executing those decisions no matter how ill-informed those decisions might be.

No only goverment la... anywhere also same la.. Once I go against my employer and paid the price by being by passed for promotions etc... After 9 years with the company... so sometimes it's better to follow what your superior wants u to do.. just do it... although u know it's a big waste of time. Try to be a easy person to work with... believe me, it opens alot of opportunities for promotion.

As long u under someone... just do it and work smart. We are paid to execute then we execute. If we are paid to design and make decision then we design and make decisions... Just do what u have to do... Dont be "the smart guy" and end up being back fired.

Being allowed to make decisions is very different from going against your employer/manager/supervisor's wishes.

Your work attitude is typical of this American MNC that I used to work in. And I quit from. No opportunity for growth. Don't value suggestions, and looks like not much of grooming of their employees too. I made the jump and am much happier now.

Thus far, the better companies that I worked for, my managers would tell me why a decision I made or intend to make was not that good and why the other choices are better. Thus, slowly, I would learn and understand how they work/think, and basically how the company works/thinks and thus, slowly learn to make the right business decisions.

I agree with u on your points... that's why I say work smart.. following orders doesnt mean u lose on your suggestions, like for example suggest the way u wanna do and get your superior to approve it...

but I dunno why especially locals die die want their way and they will try to MICRO MANAGE u... This kind of company also I cant last long.... but they know abit and they will tell u what to do.. if u go against them because it's wrong and will cause an impact, they still wanna do their way.. when u comply to do their way and the BAD things happened, they will twist around and ask u why u never inform they... really CCB!! and u will be the scapegoat... and always change decision and not firm on decision made...

I have join a few local IT Firms and they play the same game... The one thing certain is uncertainty! Another usually trend of local bosses is the expect u to go home late... and always look for cheap and good.. lets see how long can u last...

AIya... why make life so difficult.... find job relaxs wan, pay reasonable also ok what!.. Most important is being happy at work... Everyday go home on time.. can play with ur kids... Always work work and work... worry in the future your own kid dont recognise u then u know....

but as long as salary is high and keep increase...i dun mind no career progression or have any satisfaction

That's "ICT Professional" in name only. Qualifications, experience and attitude matter.

For every IT people out there, we all know CCNA, CCNP, MCITP you could get it easily by some "means". Look at those FT who came to Singapore and work in IT line, a lot of them are well certified and don't mind getting low pay.

However majority of them only know how to talk but don't know how to work. I even got friend who interviewed a CCNP holder, when ask him on how to calculate subnet, he just insist of not doing any calculation and give stupid reason like no paper or pen when he is holding his notepad.

Working in IT = Commitment

Always have a willing to learn attitude. This will helps you a lot to gain work experience rather become a cert-collector. Eventually you will see the fruits that you bear.

life in IT is tough with the constant upgrade required. I totally agreed with gld998 find a relax job then go home on time. I personally is in a SI company, there is no life only work. Currently i have hons degree MCITP, VCP and couple of symantec certs. As for what lies ahead seem to me that i am not being rewarded for my effort. In the past system engineer only do system now system also must know network. By the way despite having much exp and certs i am still under contract, i just wanna find a job pay 4k plus permanent job also so difficult.

It is a given especially for a career in IT but you should not view this purely from the perspective of getting certifications.

What you are doing would not be sustainable on the long run; you should move up the value chain. Some in the industry view this as going into PM role and PMs only know how to talk. But the challenges are very different. The other thing you should consider is to specialise in a vertical (telco, manufacturer, etc) where you can gain valuable business knowledge that makes you employable. Remember, we in the IT industry are fundamentally cost centres to the mgmt.

I was thinking about my career recently and this analogy came to mind.

Consider this problem statement:

"I need money to build a bridge to cross the river"

When I started out my career, my role was to figure out how to build the bridge. Later is to figure out other than bridges, are there other ways and how to find the money.

But now, my role is to ask why do you need to cross the bridge? What are the underlying issues? Perhaps don't even need to be crossing bridges!
