The PCP is all about networking. I have no way of telling you the exact steps of finding rich people. Anyway my case is about networking with relatives who wanted to set up an IT company. As they need local headcount for S Pass, i am easily accepted as i am willing to take the risk of joining start-up.

I have no comment about aggressive sales tactics mentioned. What i am taking up is software development. You need to be prepared to burn your free time to practice coding for the rest of your working life to be proficient. For starters you need to learn HTML, CSS/SASS, Javascripts/Typescripts. Afterwards its react/angular/vue, node.js, express.js, mysql/mongodb/oracle/firebase. If you dont like web development and wanted to be data analytic, need to learn GO, PHP, C++/C#, python, ruby and etc.

edit: if you are not aiming to code, ignore my words.

btw, ur PCP program is under NUS-ISS ? sorry if u had mentioned it before

ok thanks.. that means the course is same as the 40-days full stack foundation course which individuals can sign up on their own without having to enrol in the PCP program

If my inclination is only in Web development, is this programme still relevant? or is it geared towards more software-based?

am i correct to say that it's hard to get into this PCP because NUS doesn't really match an employer for you?

Self-source is higher probability of getting in? though employers also unlikely to take one with no much experience

NUS is responsible enough to really help you find a job if you really took the PCP seriously. anyway if you ever go into the ICT route, focus more on honing your coding skills than to actually find employer.

Thanks for the tip, NUS sounds responsible than esp for us mid-career switchers. (i heard of some other PCP who mostly require the participant to self-source and hardly offer any job matching help).

I'm interested in the front-end web development aspect, especially wordpress. I'm self-learning through online course/books by following along those wordpress development projects (html, css, scss, gulp, js, php).

though i'm far from being skilled enough to land a dev. job at this point, but was wondering if this PCP is suitable for my interests?

I also read that you are a PCP participant yourself, hows your learning journey so far?

the developer pcp is pretty heavy on front end development. However they are using angular framework which requires you to learn node.js, angular, typescript, express and a few other database. I am taking up pcp mostly to gain government grant and to socialise with fellow coders. to be honest udemy is a better choice learn coding.

I see, nowadays front end got so many frameworks, i'm having trouble remembering the different syntaxes esp. when i'm only at hobby lvl now. Feels like new frameworks popup before i can familiarize w existing ones.

even for actual software developer / data analytic, they felt a lot of difficulty adapting to different frameworks from time to time. Anyway there are stuff that are pretty much fixed, you need html, css, js for front end, backend java, js. I know the new syntax are overwhelming, but they help to refactor the codes by a large margin.

if you dont like javascript, go try out ruby / ruby on rails! much easier to code. Even python is easier to code than javascript.

That is what I once did. Spend over 2 months on studying coding than work on it

Any regrets? I can afford several years without income but I have to make sure whatever endeavour once I quit materialised. Else good game.

Whats your long term plan in wanting to do so ? Is it to get a coding job?

If it is just to get a coding job, why not just self-study on your own during the weekends first. Build up a few simple portfolios and you might be able to get an entry level coding job.

If it is just for a hobby and you have the money, then sure.. why not.

Mid career switch. Weekend is always occupied. Stuck in a cycle and difficult to break out of it unless family is neglected..so work and income is only thing that can be sacrificed.

why would you want to switch to coding as a mid career? especially even after you have a family ? if your weekend is always occupied, a coding career will probably be worse, because you sometimes have to spend a lot of extra time on your own outside of work hours...

if you have not done any coding before, you should really try to at least self-study a bit on your own to see whether it really is suitable for your or not..

let me put it this way, you need to practice javascript framework for about 1000 hours before you can even put up a decent repository on github. I have yet to hit that stage.

yeah that's why quite pointless to quit job to study full-time coding, unless going to take up like bootcamp or something..

Though what I meant was just by developing certain web applications with JavaScript (e.g. Yelp clones, many tutorials on that or even just games like tic-tac-toe or the color memory game), you will be able to convince certain employers to take you in at the entry level if you don't mind the salary (probably ~2.5k or less).. don't really need complicated codes on github as long as you are able to explain the process behind it.. know a few people who managed to do that
