The rise in petrol duties is meant to encourage less car usage? If only the service is normal and acceptable :)

No. At the COE price we have now, I would say the increase in petrol duties only result in higher tax and higher living cost for ordinary singaporean. Why?

The drivers (mainly the rich) can afford the increase in duties. Only the few middle class drivers cannot afford and maybe drive less.

The businesses will transfer the increase to the consumers through higher prices. The rich can afford the higher prices. The poor and middle class cannot.

So the losers from the exercise are - the poor and the middle class.

MRT breakdown, I also go to work late.

So, shouldnt the service be improved first, before trying to encourage more people to take mrt?

Fall in petrol prices is an opportunity to raise the petrol tax as due to the Falling oil prices, pump prices after the petrol duty changes would remain lower than the levels seen in the last two and a half years.

A motorist driving a 1,600cc car and who pumps an intermediate-grade petrol will have to pay about estimated $230 more a year..

Comparatively, a motorist who drives a 2,000cc car with a fuel efficiency of 10 litres per 100km, and who pumps a premium grade of petrol, will have to fork out about estimated $360 more a year.
