Exclamation WSJ: Singapore's Expat Surge Fuels Economic Fears

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...15117966.html?

Between 2005 and 2009, Singapore's population surged by roughly 150,000 people a year to 5 million—among the fastest rates ever there—with 75% or more of the increase coming from foreigners. In-migration continued in 2009 despite expectations it would collapse because of the global recession.

I'm quite curious to know how they derive the figures considering that the figures of 2009 isn't out yet. Can anyone tell me where can I get the figures?

Not rocket science.... Just email Patrick Barta or Tom Wright, their email address is located at the end of the article.

They probably call up ppl at Singapore Stats board etc? I guess if it's a premium brand getting such info shouldn't be too hard. Most journalists should have contacts.

The reports itself is more enlightening.

Err, thats not for full 2009 lah. Thats only until June 09. Although I think it shouldn't be too far from the full picture eventually.

So we will soon see more than 5 million people living in Singapore? I am sure that there are a lot of people here that don't find this prospect attractive at all.

it's 4.99million in jun 09. crossing the 5 mil mark is a given for 2009, so wsj is not wrong to use that as the basis for comparision.

sian. 5 mil + people. doesn't take a genius to see that quality of life is going to suffer. even simple things like going to east coast on a weekend means crowding with the people.
