TS is a newbie in photography...actually buy any model will suit him.

alamakazim is right, many buy but use a couple of times, then stop using. i suggest TS consider buying used first, until he confirm interests in photography, then invest in a better body and lens

base on your choices, the EF-S18-135 IS USM is suitable for your needs.
Example 3 is about what effect you like. If you like to include a busy background in your works. The EF-S18-135 IS USM fit your needs.

Yes. It can AF and MF based on the switch position.

the aperture can be done auto or manually. if manually, you can set aperture. if auto, the camera set the aperture. How to change the settings, you have to read the manual.

just buy 2nd hand, nikon or canon ...$500 can liao

quite a handful of people ... just buy ... use 2-3 times... and sell

That's true. Now a day camera is just like any other electronics devices. New model come out, people sell the old one and go for new.

Old one may be just use a few times.

Agree.

I inherited the Olympus Pen Lite from my friend and after playing with it for two years and reading and learning (in Japanese) before I got my first DSLR.

Enjoy! :D

If i want to took a picture with background, i just need to set it to f/5.6?

f/5.6 still look blur to me. Can EF-S18-135 IS USM go higher than f/5.6? Higher f stop lens cost more?

Yes, you can learn more about it. Below is one simple example
the EF-S18-135 IS USM can go higher than f/5.6, you can read more about it.
usually price of the lens is depends on the lower f stop, focal length and range.

If purely for bringing along during travels. I strongly suggest a mirrorless system. No point lug around a huge piece of kit while traveling. The beat camera is the one with u

agree, I use my Olympus m43 mirrorless for travel and street and my dslr for other general stuff.

It is a tool, the remaining is the photographer's eye and brain. :D
I usually recommend this book for people after they purchased their 1st camera that has manual mode.

For mirrorless, I was looking at EOS M5 Kit (EF-M18-150 IS STM). Ah keong do you think this suits for shooting video, landscape, wildlife and portrait shots?

Im going to japan next month and its winter over there. Is it ok to carry that when its not weather sealed?

Im not just using it for travel. Going to use it for normal usage too.

80d and m5 diff not so much. =/

video : OK (depends)
landscape : OK
wildlife : not OK
portraits : OK

For M5, you may need additional batteries for travelling in winter conditions.

Damn good recommendation by Ah Keong on 'Understanding Exposure'.

Newbies, if you are lazy to read the book 'Understanding Exposure' and u want to learn more, attend basic courses like

http://pss1950.org/digital-basic-photography-course/

then will learn and understand yr camera and how to take pic with blur background (bokeh), or whatever u want...

depends on what type of wildlife.

typically, you need other type of camera (typically DSLR with more fps and long lens)
