Do you know Toyota have manufacturing factories from all over the world? In south east asia alone, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia already producing many Vios and Altis daily. And prices are at least 1/4 of Singapore's price.

So why you think Toyota for example wants to pay higher land rental and higher workers pay when they can easily source it out with our neighbors??

Sg garment is more ingenious then the rest of the car makers~ the base cost of a typical saloon is about $20, 30k~ COE alone is $45k and it costs nothing to produce~ i wouldn't surprise if LTA is richer than all of the car makers~

Big domestic market that can sustain the production. Makes sense to produce the product locally and be sold to the local public shunning the import duties like a cat slipping through a door left ajar.

Cheaper costs, build something the public wants like the Toyota Innova, Avanza in Indonesia, Vios and Altis in Thailand.

Car building industry give rise to the local spare part makers as they join in the supply chain network. Otherwise, transfer your internal supply chain overseas to produce spare parts to provide your own car brand and sometimes competitor car brands like how KYB is doing in Thailand or have supply chain partners attracted to the prospects of making profit with a Thailand plant then provide for the thai production plants like Sumitomo Dunlop and Koyo provides to Isuzu and the other brands.

Price the cars out of reach for the local non-aristocrats. Build a public transport and enjoy the monopoly, who cares even if it works or not. It is destined to make money. You think they care?

(There are manufacturing plants for aircraft parts and armored fighting vehicles so is not manufacturing capability issue.)

I mean, other countries, when they want to boost the sales of their own companies, they impose an import tax. While Singapore with its ultimate corrup -I mean control of car population for the good of the country, we already have an ARF of 100%-180%.

With the flexibility to shift goalposts change laws on the fly for the well-being of the country, like when they suddenly realized that somehow after 50 years Singapore needs a Malay president again, they can easily create a local car company that does not need to pay ARF. And with ARFs so high, the local company can be twice as expensive and still remain competitive price-wise.

Then all the millions of $, instead of going to Japan and Germany, will go to our politicians and FTs. And our mechanical engineering grads can finally get proper jobs. It's win-win.

Or unless we are not competitive even if our cars get a 100% price advantage? But then that would mean something about our buses and trains... and armored fighting vehicles...
Too competetive lor. They rather invest in biomedical industry. High profit margin in the biomedical drugs and medical devices. Higher pay for u also

Economy of scale. Our domestics market alone can't sustain it if no overseas want it.
