Etienne Capoue: Tottenham from Toulouse, £9.68 million

Etienne-Capoue-Defensive-Contribution.png

Another Frenchman making an early impact in the Premier League is Tottenham Hotspur’s Etienne Capoue. The former Toulouse anchorman has seamlessly slotted into Andre Villas-Boas’s new look side and alongside Mousa Dembele, Paulinho, and Sandro, forms one of the most athletic midfield corps in the league. Even though he has completed 90 minutes just once so far in his English career, Capoue still looks to be one of the best signings of the transfer window.

Etienne-Capoue-Passing-Breakdown.png

In Ligue 1, Capoue held a reputation as a serious midfield enforcer and he has more than lived up to that tag in his first three Spurs appearances. The Frenchman boasts a superb 88% tackle win rate and though a 57% ground duel rate is less impressive, he is still throwing himself into challenges at clips of 25 and seven minutes respectively. Perhaps most importantly to Villas-Boas, Capoue is not just a mindless physical presence chasing play all over the field. The new signing has already secured 13 interceptions at an impressive rate of once every 15 minutes.

When in possession, Capoue has been both accurate and positive with his distribution. A 90% pass completion rate is impressive unto itself, even more so when you look at where Capoue is directing play from his slot in midfield. The midfielder tends to spray possession to the flanks as evidenced by his 58% rate of lateral passes. That he sends a further 31% up field and is accurate over distance makes him a tremendous asset deep in midfield and shows him to be as accomplished technically as he is physically.

Spurs are playing breath taking football. Eriksen in particular, he has made a few passes from impossible angles. Best chances went to him, controlled magnificently in the box and still found space to shoot even with 2 defenders closing on him.

spurs is gearing up for total football under AVB - everyone a ball player with high involvement and strong team ethic.

eriksen owes his football training to PSV, probably won't turn out the same if he had stayed in the Danish league. ;)

“A great debut for Christian,” Villas-Boas said. “For a player of his age he has great experience and he’s a pure No 10, a creative player. He bonded [with the team] very easily. His individual quality made a difference.”

Man of the match: Eriksen (Tottenham)

Garth Crooks's team of the week

DEFENDER - DANNY ROSE (Tottenham)
Danny Rose

Danny Rose is another Tottenham player who has returned to White Hart Lane after a loan spell looking like a player with a big future.

The two blocks he produced to deny Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel from scoring were enough to make your eyes water.

Did you know? Danny Rose's passing accuracy rate against Norwich was 91.8%, higher than other player that started for Spurs.

FORWARD - GYLFI SIGURDSSON (Tottenham)
Gylfi Sigurdsson

John Hartson spoke with glowing praise on Final Score about this player's performance for Spurs in the 2-0 win against Norwich. His first goal was so technically brilliant that Hartson's jaw visibly dropped while watching in the studio.

The Iceland international was unlucky not to get a hat-trick on the day and his link-up play with Christian Eriksen is another feature well worth keeping an eye on.

Did you know? Sigurdsson's brace against Norwich was his third in the Premier League. However, it was his first on home soil.

FORWARD - CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (Tottenham)
Christian Eriksen

A most impressive debut crowned by the most exquisite of passes for Gylfi Sigurdsson's opening goal against Norwich.

The former Ajax favourite appears comfortable on the left or right side and has enough Champions League experience to be a major asset for Tottenham's European campaign and all for a mere £12m at the tender age of 21.

Did you know? Eriksen has already assisted four goals in five league games in 2013-14 (for Ajax & Spurs).

Tottenham have won seven of their eight league and cup ties this season. They have only conceded one goal to date - Olivier Giroud's winner.

They have the best defensive record on table at the moment.

Impressive!

In-form Spurs thrash Aston Villa

Jermain Defoe scores twice as Tottenham beat Aston Villa 4-0 to reach the fourth round of the League Cup.

- 8 wins in 9 games.
- Conceded only 1 goal.

Enuff said. They are more of a team who can hold the ball and do something now. Players like Eriksen, paulinho, lamela, chadli are exceptionally talented players who can hold the ball and create something. Not the typical blindly hit and try their luck type of players.
