Flen: Intel
Chiu: AMD

Otherwise small risk of becoming chiur friend's tech support

On Windows 10 once you get internet connection windows update will download most of the mobo / chipset related drivers for intel (though auto update behaviour sometimes is screwy). Easier for ur flen.
Yeah, if getting Ryzen still need to install updates and patches and things can get so uncertain after i leave the PC to him..

Though 6C is hard to resist...

TBH i am very disappointed they didn't fuse the disabled cores on these Ryzen 5 models and power consumption is only as good as 7s. Hopefully motherboard makers can turn on the disabled cores and make AMD great once again

Personally i will go for non-X 1600 with an extra Wraith Spire cooler bundled and 3.6 GHz a given guaranteed easy clock speed to hit. And it seems that all Ryzen models have more or less equal OC capability... The only difference is just that 3.9-4.1 GHz. But most people should be stopping at 3.7-3.8 GHz before power consumption, voltage gets ugly...
Lol its no where power hungry as compared to my 5820k loh. Despite even if i bumpped down the clocks for 4.1 voltage at 1.15v.

btw yusoffb01, think you may like this bench results too.

Pay just $300+ for CPU and be 98% faster vs the world.

That is impressive! Then again, I am typing on an intel z8300 and I can live with cpu mark of around 1200.

Not playing games on pc currently, playing persona 5 on ps4. For converting videos I use staxrip which can convert 1080p hevc/h264 at 160 fps using nvidia gpu.

Below is a list of single rank ddr4 memory that should be good for those planning on building a ryzen system. But don't quote me on these as I maybe be wrong here(correct me if I am). Always refer back to your motherboard QVL

It will be good if anyone that has bought these and tested working on their system at the advertised speeds or higher up to 3200mhz on their build and report back.

Personally I have tested the geil dragon ram 16gb kit 2400mhz CL16-16-16-36 1.2v(GWB416GB2400C16DC) and manage to OC them to 2933 with CL18-17-17-39 with MEM VDDIO of 1.4v / MEM VTT of 0.7 and stock SOC voltage of 0.9 to be stable. I can clock my ram to 3200mhz boot into windows but it's unstable which I suspect to be my board limitation(Asrock x370 killer sli) which seems to max out at 3000mhz as can be seen in their QVL.

good luck with your builds

looking at the benchmark, intel simply need to come with 40core atom processor to match a 6 core ryzen yet consumes less power.

Yeah, if getting Ryzen still need to install updates and patches and things can get so uncertain after i leave the PC to him..

Though 6C is hard to resist...
For your friend's use case, you need to consider the behaviour of Turboboost 2.0 (by default Intel rules) vs. XFR. Mobo manufacturers can "cheat" this rule with a feature dubbed as " multicore acceleration/enhancement since the rules are not locked. (there's an anandtech article)

That turns it into a pseudo-pascal GPU boost 3.0, and maintaining boost clock on all cores are very likely and it should not be underestimated. If the primary usage is gaming like you mentioned, that helps.

The way you're putting a PC together for the friend suggests he's not as satki as chiu in not only prices, but tech specs and performance? Giving him a optimal out-of-the-box experience (non-tweaky) imo is the way to go. Else, you'll be the potentially optimising the uefi.

Its not to mean that something's broken. But rather is it at peak performance out-of-the-box than lifting and adjusting flags in the uefi. Its for different users. Just like AMD giving wattman capability and +50% power limit in GPUs while Nvidia is very locked down with mild power limit/voltage bump potential, for better or worse.

Tweaker vs. non-tweaker, just go along with your sentiments for your friend's perspective than making it a hard sell.

Hey guys. I see ryzen so cheap i feel so tempted. I am currently running an i5 4590 and 980ti. But my i5 seems to be bottlenecking abit when running games at 1440p. I was thinking of either, getting a cpu upgrade, so a i7 4790k used and a cooler or getting a whole new mobo ram and cpu + cooler.

Any advise? Main use is gaming. So the ryzen seems okayish but maybe not the best choice if i am just gaming?

lol if u going for ryzen u have to wait for some time for the game developers to give u a better ryzen gaming.

anyway what games are u playing?

A bit of everything. Usually not the newest games. I am interested in most of the AAA or indie games but usually i will play slightly older games because i have no money to buy new ones. Haha.

Demanding games i am interested in now are like NieR Automata, Hitman (This one kills my current CPU. I can only get around 50 to 60 fps. CPU usage maxes out), witcher 3, tomb raider etc.

Go ahead and get the i7. What chassis you using to make you worry? For your case I don't think it's worth changing to a Ryzen as your mobo still relevant to the current gen of games.

Worth changing from i5 6600k to r5 1600? Lol
Nope. You won't see gains in gaming. Only in content creations or multi cores and threads operations.
