About Hard disks

Why is my Hard disk size smaller than the one i bought?
Reasons:
Hard disk size is measured in decimal units, e.g. a WD 640 GB contains 640 Billion Bytes of space

BUT, the hard disk size is smaller than what is actually bought.
Assuming you have only one partition on the hard disk
Your computer reads Computer size in binary not in decimal, but computer hard disk sizes are made in decimal numbers
Thus 1 kilobyte of data is actually 2^10 bytes, not 1000 bytes
2^10 = 1024 bytes
1 mb ~ 1thousand kilobytes = 2^10 * 2^10 = 2^20 = 1024 x 1024 = 1 048 576 bytes, not 1 000 000 bytes
1 gigbyte ~ 1 thousand megabytes = 2^10 * 2^10 * 2^10 = 2^30 = 1024x1024x1024 = 1 073 741 824 bytes

So 640 GB or 640 Billion Bytes Decimal is actually 640 000 000 000 / 1024^3 = 596.046 GB
some space may not be allocated, as 8mb is unallocated when a new partiton is created, to be updated when i find out
Hi guys. I have a Hitachi 160gb. Going by the above calculation i should have around 149gb. But why does Windows say my Local Harddisk total size is 127gb? Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

go to disk management under control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management

check if there are other partitions in the hard disk, there is likely to be one, if it is a hard disk from a laptop which has never been reformatted.. this sector is hidden and used for recovery purposes.. my toshiba tecra m5 also like that, but biggest problem is my hard disk is 80GB not 160 GB
so the amount of space i have is 67 gig not 70+

Hmm...just wondering, would it be advisable to get say..a 1GB 4870 rather than a 512MB 4870, if my monitor is 22"..?

seriously yes.. 1GB here > 512 since the 4870 is a very fast card, not enough ram to buffer will bottleneck your card

So...the resolution is okay?

I usually tot 24" or abv then need 1GB version of gfx.

And since the price of 1GB 4870 is quite high compared to 512MB pricing, i hope it's a right choice

Yup, i went to disk management.

I have 127.99gb NTFS and 25.39gb unallocated. Anyway to add this unallocated space with the NTFS partition? If possible, are there any side effects like loss of data or even physical damage to the HDD?

btw when thinking of changing a processor , wad need to be taken into consideration ?

like for grachic card, the PSU will affect the card .

so for processor , wad other factors must be taken into consideration ? will it like overheat or something ?

overheat? are you overclocking?
just make sure that your stock cooler has thermal material(the grey grey material at the base of the heatsink, dont touch it, just make sure it is not bare) and install it securely such that all 4 corners of the cooler are securely locked

OR
if you are overclocking, make sure u find a good 3rd party cpu cooler and a good tube of thermal paste for maximum heat conduction away from your cpu and thus dissipation to the environment by the heatsinks on the cpu cooler

Unless your OS is 64bit if not then it will not read 4GB rams.
