Post Dental, Braces & Jaw Surgery

I would like to take this chance to share with people who are having issues with their teeth or jaw. Also, people who are in a lower income family can seek dental help now easily.

I'm a guy with severe under-bite problem. In addition, I am from a lower income group. Having this said, paying for expensive braces is tough for my family and me, needless to say the price of a jaw surgery. But however, I am already undergoing my corrective procedures to correct my under-bite problem. Now let me tell you my case studies and then the solution. Basically the whole story of what i went through.

I was referred to National Dental Centre Singapore, NDC in short. I went to see a doctor for wisdom tooth problem but was asked if i am interested in a jaw reconstructive surgery to fix me jaw surgery. So i said yes and they referred me to NDC.
*You can get referral from polyclinic so its cheaper but do take note that not all polyclinic have dental services. Or better still, if you are a guy serving your NS, you may want to seek your camp dental centre for help. And if you have serious under-bite problem like me, the dentist at polyclinic will ask if you are interested in a corrective jaw surgery to fix your under-bite problem.*

After i seen the doctor about my wisdom tooth at NDC, he once again ask if i am interested in the jaw surgery so i thought why not listen and see if Govt sector is cheap or not. So i was given a "HEAD ORTHODONTIST" at NDC. I thought i was lucky but i was not. This head did not explain things clearly to me. He asked if i want to do a jaw surgery and i told him that i want to know how much does it cost me first. He said that braces will be around 3k to 4k and jaw surgery is around 5k which can be paid by medisave. So of course i agree but i did not sign anything because the head himself did not ask me to sign anything. Everything was just verbal agreement. But, he asked me to take photograph and also took a molding of my teeth. FYI, EVERYTHING HERE WAS CHARGED! Then he told me to take out my wisdom teeth first, together with 2 braces teeth. So i assume that the price is around 3k-4k for braces and 5k for surgery. And so i verbally agreed and went on to pluck out two wisdom tooth and TWO BRACES TOOTH.

Here come the best part of this doctor. After all the extractions, he sent me for a financial talk, which actually means signing the paper for braces and the jaw surgery. Surprisingly on that piece of agreement, i was freaking quoted $5,885 for ONLY BRACES. I thought the "HEAD" said its only 3k-4k? At the point i was fuming but it wasn't the end. It stated that taking photograph and molding of teeth is included inside the $5,885. So why was i charged before i even sign the agreement?

So i decided to seek for more alternative. I called Jurong health and all... They are still quite expensive. Every GOVT dental can quote you 4k+ for braces but you have to wait for a year or more on the waiting list. Then i tried calling Q&M. Surprisingly, Q&M quoted me $3.8k for braces. HOW IS A PRIVATE SECTOR BE CHEAPER THAN GOVT SECTOR?

So now, i am doing braces at Q&M which is only $3.8k. (inclusive of molding of teeth, photography and x-ray) FYI, photography is also part of the procedure to see your changes. As for my jaw surgery, i will be doing it at KTP Hospital and i heard it is cheaper and can be pay by medisave too. Furthermore, the orthodontist at KTP (NOT EVEN THE HEAD) explain everything super clearly to me. It's like the orthodontist is doing a presentation to me. Now i can do everything at ease.

Final conclusion:
- KTP hospital is famous for their orthodontic skills. However i do not know their braces pricing. You can check it out yourself. Everything concerning dental, KTP is quite a right choice.
- NDC is definitely out of the way. Their service is so bad that everything they do, it makes me worry. So it is definitely a no no.

If you got anything to share, share it here!

kudos for the advice!
how can a government centre under subsidised patient who need to wait 1 year for its services charged more expensive than a private centre?
really hope the government dental review its system and policies.

It depends on what kind of teeth you are extracting. Also, it depends on luck and how easy going your teeth is. Wisdom tooth 5days mc straight. If you are a guy, do it in ns so its free plus got mc. Wisdom tooth is the most painful extraction because it requires cutting open your skin. Then stitch it back. My left side, i swell for 2 weeks and i dont know why. After the first week, the swelling gets bigger and bigger... Maybe some minor infection. And i only eat kfc whipped potato for 2 weeks. However on my right side, morning i pluck, at night i can eat prata already. Depends on how good your dentist is also! Extracting normal teeth not pain one, only the jab for numbing pain.

Thanks for the reply. I'm out from ns, 28 this year already. My wisdom tooth are not giving me any problem but just that recently Dentist found out that one of them is actually decayed.. Is extraction the only way? And also can I just pluck 1 wisdom teeth only ah? For my braces, Dentist said need to do extraction for space..

Wasted, should have pluck wisdom tooth during ns so its free. But no worries, check with your dentist if you can use your medisave to pay for it. If its already decay, the best or maybe the only solution is to extract it. If not the decay tooth will then affect the neighbour teeth which cause more teeth to he decay.

You can choose to pluck only 1 wisdom tooth but if top and bottom are out. Consider plucking one side, which means top and bottom together instead of just one tooth. Ease your pain so you wont have to go through the same thing in the future.

As for braces, what i did was i asked the dentist to pluck it together with my wisdom tooth so its "SO CALL" 顺便 pluck so its free! Haha. You may wanna try asking your dentist to pluck too! Hehe

What i recommend you to do is to faster seek q&m for braces. See what they say about your teeth. Maybe you can go Q&M and look for Dr Hwang, say I refer you there. Just say you are my cousin or what. Maybe got discount and im not kidding about this. He charge 3.8k for me but maybe if you are my family, maybe cheaper. No harm trying cause my gf sister got cheaper after my gf did hers at q&m. He will arrange and work with KTPH closely for your jaw reconstruction surgery.

See what the dentist say about your braces.. If the dentist say that you need to pluck other teeth out for braces, take down which teeth is to be plucked out for braces. Then when you go hospital for your wisdom tooth extraction, ask them to pluck that braces tooth for you also, this way it will be free for you. As for the surgery, you have to check with KTPH if SAF can pay for you. Braces definitely pay yourself.

That's what I have been telling my friends and family.

NDC dentists are very poor in skills. They can't communicate their services properly to allay fears and guide patients on what to expect.

Their waiting time for appointment in horrendous!! When you get to see the dentist eventually, they make you wait in between to see their other specialist dentist to cross check on their diagnosis.

My friend had a filling done at NDC by a junior dentist and it dropped out the next day!! She had to take leave from office to get it redone. Waste time and cause inconvenience.

The best is its not any cheaper than outside private dental clinic.

When I looked around the clinic, there were empty rooms with no dentists. Either they don't have enough dentists to see more patients or they are too relaxed.

Why is MOH not checking on their prices and service levels.

Hi Kukubirdx3, I've a severed underbite which I hated too and I was thinking of doing something about it. Having read your story, would you mind telling us the subsidized costs for the surgery and which stage of the process are you in now? And also the timeline for the whole procedure.

Hey there my lord, for the cost, the surgery can range from 5k to 16k depending on how complicated the surgery is. Im not sure about the pricing but you can consult KTPH Orthodontist on the pricing. But i think can pay using medisave.

For the procedure, you will need to undergo braces to align your teeth straight. Afterwhich, when the orthodontist thinks that you are ready for the surgery, you will be undergoing surgery. No scars will be left on you because all cutting will be inside your mouth. Normally is bottom jaw push in 2/3 and top jaw push out 1/3. For more information, you can look up in youtube. Search for jaw reconstruction surgery.

For me, im still at the braces phase. Hoping my teeth can align asap so i can start my surgery asap! Haha! I highly recommend Q&M City Square Mall, Dr Hwang if you wanna do the braces. There is no way you should skip the braces because its part of the whole procedure. Because if you dont put braces and go straight to the surgery, chances are your top teeth wont touch the bottom teeth and so you cant bite. Dr Hwang will link you up with KTPH for the surgery part. Currently he is undergoing a promotion. So his braces will only cost $3,852. National Dental Centre (NDC) cost around 5.8k and even after subsidy, it will be more than 4k. Worst still, if you wanna get the subsidies rate, the waiting list is around 1 year. Im not sure about other hospital but i think their pricing are all around the same. NDC service isnt good. So if you want to do it at hospital, approach KTPH instead but i would still say Dr Hwang at Q&M City Sqaure Mall is good and affordable.

Up for awareness. Not only long waiting time for appointment.

hi i can confirm for the bad experience with NDC too.
their special discounted price for braces to be done by graduating dentistry students quoted to be around 4k too. this is the same rate as what you can get from private practice outside.

i am also on braces waiting for surgery. going for private all the way. for jaw surgery it is important for the orthodontist and the surgeon to work together and plan for what needs to be moved during the surgery.
