went to buy cheapo tp-link router TL-WR740N (S$24) + TL-WN727N V4 (S$11.50) @ bedok point challenger yesterday to replace my dying 18 year old WRT54G linksys router and WUSB54G network adaptor for starhub cable internet

TL-WR740N-01.jpg

TL-WN727N-01.jpg

the router setup was simple, on the power and go to the router setup page and config to dynamic IP and set SSID and password then can use oredi

the router is small and run not as hot as my old linksys router

unfortunately the network adaptor doesn't have vista drivers, email from asia radio confirm no vista driver for the V4 adaptor, the ironic thing is it has XP drivers

so going to change today to TL-WN725N (S$26) by topping up S$14.50 as it has vista driver

if can change my cost of upgrading my home network from 54Mbps to 150Mbps is only S$50

wish me luck

went to bedok point challenger after work

explained no vista driver for TL-WN727N V4

no questions asked exchange for me on the spot

went home and plug in the TL-WN725N adaptor

install the cd driver and everything works

my pc is 10M away from the router

last time 3 bar, now is 5 bar full

read many negative about this nano adaptor but reception is better than my old WUSB54G

i'm on starhub 3Mbps cable

Thanks uncle168 for the review.

TP-Link = Cheaper, Better, Faster (CBF). :D

But best performance still goes to ASUS I guess.

must save money like buffet than market crash can buy with cash

trading no need expensive equiptment nor bandwith

experience and patient plus a sense of humour

if u buy asus u waste a few hundred dollars which could otherwise be vested in blue chips in 2016

asus profit drop a lot go and look at their thread and u will know why

all the cheapo things i buy from biostar, nokia, tp-link last a long time because i buy those with minimum features at the lowest price

value for money

means u can retire faster even if u r not rich man

Subject: warranty for WN725N and WR740N
Hi,

I’ve just brought the WN725N and WR740N from challenger

Do I need to send in the warranty cards?

Do you have online warranty registration?

Thanks

TL-WN725N adaptor not very good

i close door will lose connection

think the ideal range is only about 5m

not recommended as the device is small hence the antenna not so good unless you are near the router :(

the router is ok but not the nano adaptor

Maybe it's ideal for use with a notebook in the same room as the wireless router.

My personal rule-of-thumb for choosing wireless adapter for strong wireless signal quality and performance, in descending order of preference:

  1. Internal PCI-Express / PCI card with 1 or more antenna for desktop PCs ($30 - $50?)
  2. USB adapter with high gain antenna ($20 - $30?)
  3. USB adapter / nano adapter ($10 - $30?)

Not sure how reliable my rule-of-thumb is, maybe experts who have tried out many brands and models of wireless adapters can chip in with their opinions. Maybe certain brands always work better than some others, or certain models, or those with antennas?

But anyway I've been interested in wireless adapters given the many types available in the market, so just sharing info. Thanks uncle168 for sharing your experience with TL-WN725N.

its a pity it doesn't have vista driver or i would not have exchanged it for TL-WN725N

think they sold the TL-WN727N V4 for only S$9 the last pc show

challenger sell S$14, S$11.50 for member

You purchase this router because of the price?

I am also using 3mpbs from SH as well. Only spend 5 hours a day using internet the rest of the timing working.

Also intend to upgrade to 25mpbs next year due to contract expire next year Jan.

thought all the devices in my house can support wireless n

so upgrade the router to n

n is value for money now compared to ac

the price difference is 2 to 4 times

see starhub it show got offer for 25mbps or not before i recontract

missed out the free 1gb data sim and 3 month free offer

most likely will recontract to 25mbps next month or during it show promotion

bedok point challenger is closed for renovation

heng i change the adaptor or must go other outlet to change

for $50 to upgrade my cable internet i can use for another 5 years until the government also start to subsidise fibre contract for retail customers as the take-up rate remains low

investing in the fibre network was a bad idea by IDA

they should have pushed for either WIMAX or full scale coverage of 4G instead of letting the telcos build their own 4G networks which remains problematic

i suspect IDA would abandon fibre and 4G in a few year's time and adopt 5G islandwide coverage as the new standard

it means everything from home broadband, telephone, tv and all the ICT will use this new 5G network using the existing fibre network as backbone

then the 3 telcos no need to invest in the network and lease from the government

this way the government can control the network redundancy and the price inflation of Telco services

if it is too expensive, the initial purpose of investing in bandwidth to boost R&D capability in ICT solution to boost productivity would be lost

march is their most desperate month when 1Q14 close

they have to push up the broadband numbers or affect bonus

they are fighting fiber war during IT show

but after IT show

they will push cable as the margin is 100%

i would wait until end of march to beginning april before i recontract

the fiber war is to steal each other customer

if everyone sell u 1Gbps, singapore entire fibre network got so many 1Gbps meh?

because openet sell per user is S$15 irregardless of speed, the fibre operater sell above the price is profit

stinkies are not dumb, they will not sign fibre until the price drop below S$30 for 100Mbps

many are still on adsl and cable as most use it mainly to surf web and do office work, no need so fast

i will only switch to fibre when they allow me to bring home the ONT and install myself

the takeup rate is low because of the problematic installation schedule by openet

if openet ah neh can install, uncle also can DIY mah
