use old router as switch or buy new switch?

I have a DIR 655 router, which will retire as I am getting M1 fibre and have to use their RG as i am using voice.

My fibre point is in the living room, but all my NAS, PS3 and PC are in my room. I have a 6m ethernet cable running from living room to my room now.

can I actually use my DIR 655 as a switch in my room? does it affect the performance?

or I should buy a new switch?

you can disable dhcp on the 655 and set it to bridge mode. shouldnt be that much of a performance drop since i figured you are connecting the 655 to the gigabit port of the RG

Yup, you can still used back your DIR-655 using the setup configuration described in this post by MarineX. Just substitute his Starhub HG256s and DIR-855 with your M1 HG256 & DIR-655 respectively !

TP -> ONT -> Huawei Voice Home Gateway HG256 -> D-Link DIR-655

I thot of switching off the wireless at either the HG256 or the DIR 655

Up to you if you wan use same ssid+settings or not lor
But one thing is, one of it can be dedicated for b/g comnection, so legacy device gets supported while N device can transfer faster
