customize whatsapp alert tone

hi,
i tried to customize the alert tone from whatsapp like this i found it here in the archives..but i doesn't work.

does anybody have an idea what i did wrong?

>Open up iPhone Explorer

>Browse to /User/Applications/{x-x-x-x-x}/ <- you have to browse each folder until you >find WhatsApp.app.

>Browse into WhatsApp.app

>2 ways to get it done:

>Easy:
>i) Rename the ringtone to any of the .CAF you find inside.
>ii) Copy the ring tone into the folder /User/Applications/{x-x-x-x-}/WhatsApp.app.
>iii) Select the ring-tone u copied in WhatsApp.

>Harder:
>i) Edit PushSounds.plist inside /User/Applications/{x-x-x-x}/WhatsApp.app/English.lproj
>ii) Modify a record to name your tune and also the filename it should pick up.
>iii) Select the ring-tone you named in Whatsapp.

i followed the Easy Steps until part ii). then rather than copy my ringtone (caf) format in, i replaced one of the original tones, eg Tri-tone.caf with my custom tone.

then from now on, tri-tone.caf sounds like my custom tone liao.

Guide to modify or add custom sound to Whatsapp

As a window user, you will need 3 software to help you
1) iphone folder allows you to access the folders on your iphone. If you have jailbroken the iphone, you also need to download and install afc2add from inside Cydia to access the system folders.
2) Plist editor allows you to edit the list of sound used by Whatsapp
3) wavepad from NCH Software (14 days trial, full function) allows you to change the sound you want into .caf file format that iphone uses.

1) Gather up all the sounds you want, in mp3 or whatever format. Use Wavepad to open these sound files, save as Apple AIFF format. Rename this sound file to .caf. For example my file was yoda.mp3, I saved as Yoda (Apple AIFF format), then rename to Yoda.caf. Note, if window disallow the .caf, nevermind, we can do the renaming in step 6.
3) Use iphonefolder to get down to User->Applications->WhatApps Folder->WhatsApp.app->English.Iproj find the PushSounds.plist file and drag onto your window desktop. It will ask if you want to convert etc, say no.

Note: At the Applicaition Folder there will have a lot of jibberrish, you need to identify WhatsApp via it's icon, You will understand what I mean when you drill down to find PushSounds.plist

4) Use Plist Editor to open up PushSounds.plist and add in your sound as shown in this image

5) move the modified PushSounds.plist back into the iphone

6) Copy your yoda.caf or whatever .caf file into the User->Applications->WhatApps Folder->WhatsApp.app folder. If in step 1 window disallow the renaming, lets say still at yoda.aif, nevermind, copy it into the iphone, THEN rename inside the iphone to yoda.caf to bypass the window os limitation.

7) Reboot your iphone and viola

Awesome. Easy to follow.

I have the same problem. Everything works but when I get the first message, when my iPhone is locked, I will get the default sound. But once I open it and locked it again, I will get my new tone.

The weird thing is after 10 mins. If I received another message it will go back to the default sound, and the same thing is repeated above

Hendrix is right, how do you change the notification sound?

Is there a limit in terms of seconds for the caf file in whatsapp?

I'm using ios 5.0.1 on iphone 4. I'm using a 30 secs custom sms tone for my Iphone4.

I tried to edit the same sound for whatsapp by extracting the m4r file and rename to caf.

Whatsapp allows me to set the notification sound but once the message comes in it still uses the default tritone notification sound
