A long shot ....

My daughter's iphone 7+ is unable to turn on. It is stuck on the Apple logo screen. I can hear the phone resetting I think, as it make a sound like when we startup the phone.
However, it does not go beyond that.
We have tried connecting to ITunes but ITunes cannot "see" the phone.

So in chronological order:-

Long story ...

On 20/2/2018, when I came home from work my daughter told me her phone keeps restarting the entire day. It is always on the black screen with the rotating symbol.
Apparently it happened after she opened a message from a friend.
When she checked with her other friends she realized a few of them also had the same problem.
They solved the issue by updating the IOS using ITunes.
SO I connected the phone to ITunes and tried to update the IOS. However, I was unable to do that because the phone does not have sufficient memory.
As I could not turn on the phone, I was not able to free up the memory to complete the update.
So I googled and read that a hard reset may help. I did the "right power button left volume down button" reset and then the phone got stuck on the apple logo screen.
I then tried to set it to DFU mode according to the instructions from the internet but nothing happened.
The worse thing was I am unable to turn of the phone now. As a result, I am unable to sufficiently charge the phone. And when I try to charge the phone continuously, the phone becomes very hot.

On 21/2/2018 I brought the phone down to the usual handphone repair shops. They changed the battery to make sure it was not because of that, but that didn't help. They suspected the software is corrupted and suggested the only way is to reload the IOS, which will wipe out all data. My daughter did not agree as she has many photos that she needed to use for her school projects in the phone. She did not upload the photos to Icloud and neither did she downloaded them to her notebook.

Today, we called Apple care and they tried to talk us through to retrieve the data, but it didn't work. We went through the whole "left button right button" procedures and others a few times, until finally the tech/engineer suggested that we need to reload the IOS, which will wipe out all data in the phone, including the photos and notes. Which of course my daughter did not agree to.

So... I know it is a long shot, given the current situation, is there any other way to retrieve the photos from the phone? Or any other solutions that at least let us turn on the phone so we can increase the memory? Any shops that can do "magic"???

Appreciate all advise and recommendations.

Thank you.

Hey pecks,

Consider putting your iPhone into DFU Mode, then restoring the firmware.

The reason why the device is rebooting is because of a character bug present in iOS 11.2.5. Be sure to update the device to the latest version before restoring the data onto the phone.

Thanks!
The method to get into DFU mode you linked to is different from what I found. Although the method is similar, the timing to hold the buttons down is different.
I will try it tonight.
Cheers!

So last night ITunes managed to detect the phone. But it needed us to key in the password into the phone to unlock the phone. We couldn't as the phone is hanged on the apple logo screen.

The only way seems to be to put the phone in DFU mode and do a restore, which will wipe out everything on the phone and restore to factory.

On this note, has anyone tried Dr.Fone IOS recovery?

dont trust these "professional" software to do recovery.

if you really want to do recovery, i suggest taking it to a recovery specialist

Seems like the only way is to reload the iOS. Just treat this as a painful lesson & move on. I was once in your shoes & understand the feeling of losing photos & notes in the phone. If you manage to find a way to go in retrieve , please share the steps.

Here are some suggestions (not related to the recovery but rather backup the photos etc)
For photos backup use google photo. There's is a space limit if you backup in original resolution. I find the high quality good enough & unlimited storage. Once a while then you copy original photos to iTunes or desktop. I don't backup photo to iCloud as I don't pay extra for iCloud storage.
For notes, use google keep or Evernote or backup to iCloud
Other docs, use Dropbox or google drive, or backup to iCloud.
The idea is to backup a copy of important stuff online when back home using wifi.
But if you have phobia of putting your data in cloud, then use back traditional method of backing up to iTunes.
Don't be in a rush to update to latest iOS after just released. You ever know when there is a new bug affecting it, unless current iOS have a serious flaw.

Spell has listed down some really great ideas. If you find them too lengthy to execute. Consider getting an iCloud storage upgrade, set up iCloud Photo Library and iCloud backup.

And you’re set.

Alternatively if your family members are using an iPhone as well. Consider upgrading to the 200gig plan and have every one share it in the household, under the family sharing plan

Thank you for all the replies.

I have told her she will have to suck it up and learn from this experience, and to practice good housekeeping habits in future.

Hope she learns her lesson.

Cheers ....

And it is still not too late to wish everyone a Prosperous new Year in 2018 !!!

Yes backup is a MUST. I’d suggest backing up every day via iCloud or iTunes or both. All it takes is 15 - 20 min to back up via iCloud & iTunes.
