iPhone Jailbreaking, Restoring & Unlocking Guide[Pls read first post]

First time jailbreakers and those still unfamiliar with jailbreaking, please read the second post for help.

Take note:
- Jailbreaking involves modifying your iPhone's software, which voids the warranty of the iPhone and also introduces the possibility of having the phone "brick", rendering it unusable. If you are comfortable with these risks, please proceed, else leave the thread.
- We also understand that many people want to jailbreak their iPhones "out of curiosity" and are clueless to the benefits and risks of jailbreaking. If you fall in this category, please leave.
- If you're still reading this and are very certain you know what you want to get out of jailbreaking, please continue reading.

THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR DISCUSSION ON PIRACY, PLEASE SUPPORT THE DEVELOPERS WHEN NEW APPS COME OUT INSTEAD OF RIPPING OFF THEIR HARD WORK!
This thread is for discussion on current jailbreaks and upcoming jailbreaks, in addition to discussion and support on getting your iDevice jailbroken. Discussions on the different customisations on your iDevice is welcome and encouraged.

This thread is not for discussion on piracy, which includes, but not exclusive to.
- Installing cracked Appstore apps.
- Sources for repos that include paid jailbreak apps for free.
Posts with any references to the topics above will be reported to mods who may take action depending on their mood.

Just a reminder, all jailbreaks and unlocks are FREE! If you paid for your jailbreak/unlock, you have been ripped off!

Jailbreaking iPhone

Redsn0w method - Works on ALL DEVICES on all firmwares except iPad2 and iPhone 4S.
- Download Redsn0w HERE
- Download the appropriate firmware for your iDevice HERE
- Run Redsn0w and select Jailbreak
- Follow the instructions to enter DFU mode then select "Install Cydia" in the next screen.
- Jailbreak your phone
- Any unforseen errors, please refer to the second post for troubleshooting solutions

Pwnagetool custom firmware method - Works on ALL DEVICES and firmwares except iPad2 and iPhone 4S.
STRICTLY MAC ONLY, NO WINDOWS
- Download Pwnagetool from HERE
- Download the appropriate firmware for your iDevice HERE
- Launch Pwnagetool and select Advanced Mode
- Select the IPSW file you dowloaded earlier
- Under the general tab, UNSELECT ACTIVATE PHONE. Do not play with the root partitions size unless you know what you are doing!
- Proceed to add your custom packages, sources, boot logos(iPhone 3G only), etc...
- Build the custom firmware
- Launch iTunes and put your phone in DFU mode using the DFU mode utility in Pwnagetool
- Press Option + Restore and restore your phone to the customized firmware and jailbroken phone
- After restoring, ignore all warnings and error messages. Use Tinyumbrella or Recboot to boot up your phone
- Do not attempt to jailbreak the iPhone using the custom firmware from Pwnagetool on Windows, or any other Mac emulator, it will not work and might brick your phone!
- Any unforseen errors, please refer to the second post for troubleshooting solutions

Restoring iPhone

iPhone 2G and 3G
- Download the firmware for your iDevice HERE
- Launch DFU mode on your iPhone and use Shift+Restore to select the firmware you want to restore your iPhone to.
- If you get any error message, just use Tinyumbrella to boot up your phone.
- Any unforseen errors, please refer to the second post for troubleshooting solutions

iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad
WARNING, if you plan to upgrade to iOS5, there is no downgrade between iOS5 versions now. Read this link for more information.
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/6952986620/blob-monster

- Make sure you have SHSH blobs for required firmware stored on Saurik's server or on your computer if you're downgrading to an earlier version. If you don't you're screwed regardless which tutorial you use.
- You will only have the SHSH blobs if you chose "Make my life easier" when you launched Cydia on your iPhone for the first time, or if you made a copy using UMBRELLA.
- SHSH blobs are unique to your phone and cannot be interchanged
- Once you confirmed you have the SHSH blobs. Download the firmware for your iDevice HERE
- Open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
- Launch DFU mode on your iPhone and use Shift+Restore to select the firmware you want to restore your iPhone to.
- If you get any error message, just use Tinyumbrella to boot up your phone.
- Any unforseen errors, please refer to the second post for troubleshooting solutions

Unlocking iPhone
SG iPhones are unlocked by default so skip this. Unlocking is only for foreign iPhones.
iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 - Works in iPhone 3G and 3GS basebands until 5.13.04, and iPhone 4 baseband 1.59.00
- Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken, then install the ultrasn0w package from Cydia to unlock your iPhone.

iPhone Jailbreaking, Restoring & Unlocking Guide[Pls read first post]

FIRST TIME JAILBREAKERS PLEASE READ THIS
Getting ready for your first jailbreak.

1) Backup your SHSH via Tinyumbrella
This is important to safeguard your device against upgrades that will prevent you from jailbreaking.
Link for Tinyumbrella here: http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/

2) Download the latest firmware from Apple
You will need this as it is advised to do a fresh restore before jailbreaking and in case there is a need for custom firmware.
http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

3) Backup your iPhone
Connect to iTunes and press sync

4) Bookmark the jailbreak website
http://blog.iphone-dev.org

Be wary if you get your jailbreak anywhere else! Could contain viruses if you download from unofficial sources.

5) Bookmark some websites for help and support - Try to read up before asking questions that will embarrass and backfire on you

8) Jailbreak instructions:
- Download the jailbreak tool and follow the instructions that appear on screen. Or if available, on the first post of this thread.

9) Have FUN

Troubleshooting jailbreaking and restoring
NOTE 1: This guide assumes you are more computed inclined than other people, and if you see any unfamiliar step, please google for possible solutions. We are not here to spoonfeed you or turn you into a computer geek, just one who is competent enough to fix his/her own phone problems.
NOTE 2: This guide will cover most restore errors, and jailbreaking problems. It is not authoritative and may not cover certain problems.

Instructions:Follow each step and try the restore/jailbreak process again, and if it does not work, try the following step.
Step 1: Update your iTunes to the latest version - Some jailbreaks and restores don't work with outdated iTunes versions.
Step 2: Make sure you have a "clean host file" which is devoid of the link gs.apple.com - You should only point to Saurik's server when you need to do a downgrade, when doing vanilla restores, use official Apple servers instead.
Step 3: Check that your firewall/router is allowing your computer to communicate with Apple's servers - If it is blocked, Apple can't send you SHSH blobs and verify your restore. If you are using alternative DNS servers, change them back to normal as they have been known to conflict with the restore process. You may also try restarting your router/modem at this stage.
Step 4: Delete TinyUmbrella from your computer - Tinyumbrella creates a lot of problems with restores and is only really good for saving your SHSH blobs, so don't use it for anything other than that.
Step 5: Swap USB ports - Sometimes one works better than another.
Step 6: Swap USB docking cables - Same as above.
Step 7: Uninstall the Apple Mobile Device drivers and reinstall them - Apple's drivers sometimes have conflicts with the OS thus causing them to be corrupted or non-funcitonal. Reinstalling them will get them to work again.
Step 8: Restart your PC/Mac
Step 9: Try jailbreaking/restoring on another computer - Some computer hardware is just not suitable for jailbreaking/restoring.
Step 10: Reinstall iTunes - iTunes could probably be corrupted and something is not working right.
Step 11: Scan your computer for viruses/malware - Viruses can corrupt important system files, causing them to be unusable.
Step 12: Format your computer and reinstall your OS - A clean system is more likely to have less excess baggage, is leaner, and has less bugs, therefore more likely to have bugs in any jailbreak/restore process.
Step 13: Upgrade to the latest OS for your computer (Currently MacOS Snow Leopard 10.6 and Microsoft Windows 7) - Hardware and software developers tend to make their products compatible for the latest generation of OSes, then make them backward compatible. Install a newer OS so that you have fewer software compatibility problems and bugs.
Step 14: Check your hardware for any defects - Nuff said.
Step 15: Buy a new PC/Mac - If all else fails.
Step 16: Get someone to jailbreak for you - You're jut not cut for jailbreaking.

FAQ on tethered jailbreak
- A tethered jailbreak is simply a jailbreak in which your phone is unable to boot up when it has been switched off, or it does not run in the jailbreak state when it has been booted up. Devices are tethered because there is one or more area where the device fails one or more signature check along the way due to the jailbreak. You will not lose your jailbroken apps when you turn off your phone but in order to return to the jailbroken state, your phone must be plugged into the USB port and the jailbreak program run again.
- To return to the jailbroken state, run Redsn0w, and instead of selecting "Install Cydia", select "Just boot tethered" to boot up your phone again.
- Current devices which run on tethered jailbreaks are 3GS new bootrom, iPhone 4 and iPad on iOS 4.2.1. All lower firmwares and older devices are currently untethered.

How to enter DFU mode
  • Plug your iPhone into your PC/Mac and launch iTunes.
  • Turn off your iPhone.
  • Press the home and power button for 10 seconds then release the power button while still holding the home button.
  • You should see the "iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode." message and the iPhone screen is totally black. If you see a USB logo, that is recovery mode, NOT DFU mode.

How to enter recovery mode
  • Plug your iPhone into your PC/Mac and launch iTunes.
  • Turn off your iPhone.
  • Press the power and home button till you see a USB logo.
  • You should see the "iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode." message. Your phone is in recovery mode now.

How to check bootrom version
  • Put your phone in DFU mode
  • Go To:
    Start->Control Panel->Device Manager
  • In Universal Serial BUS Controller, you will find Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
  • Right Click and go to Properties, go to Details tab and select "Device Instance Path" from the drop down list box.
  • In that information, u will find [iBoot-359.x] at the end.

Anything below 3.1.2 also can but must be jailbroken. ipwnj00 has confirmed it.
Yeah, I know but it is safer to upgrade with a later firmware

then put your iPhone in DFU mode and Shift+Restore to upload the custom firmware to your iPhone using iTunes.
For 3gs put recovery mode. DFU mode will cause error.
