As above. Best if local food and not those touristy restaurants.

Welcome cafes too!

Just walk around and look for small eateries with only locals.

However, you have a high chance that these restaurants do not welcome foreigners who can't speak Japanese, all menu will be in Japanese and owners do not speak any language other than Japanese.

a lot of eateries use coupon machines. just buy the coupons and give it to the counter. no need to speak most of the time. just nod or say hi. haha.

I've come across a place at akibahara with coupon machines having only Japanese words and no pictures. The staff weren't helpful so I went to another place.

For such places, their default meal is the top left corner. That's the traditional kind with no photos but these days, most of them have photos or at least a simple translation unless they don't expect to have much foreigners there.

Then just whack whichever restaurant has high rating on tabelog lo.

I wouldn’t wanna do that. Many of them are quite costly and require advance reservations. Else recommendations via regular patrons only.

What's your budget? Meals can be from ¥500 upwards. Are you willing to travel to recommended places or need to fit to your itinerary?

For the foodie maybe they will go all out to hunt down those food. For me, i suspect most of us same too, it's usually the "best food around here" type.

matsurokuya - A5 wagyu beef. Go for their lunch set (~¥2,000) which is much cheaper than dinner. The catch is that they only serve like 30 sets for lunch so be early. It is quite popular with Japanese as well.

yea.

Went there totally as a foodie.

Hence higher budget for food :s12:

TS needs to manage your expectation though.

What may be cheap for us, may not be cheap for you. :s12:

Just some personal recommendations which are popular with locals and not in touristy places.

1. Tokyo Menchintei Honpo
Really good abura soba, quite cheap (below 1000yen).
Location: Waseda

2. Yamaguchi Ramen
Chicken ramen, very crowded during lunch hours
Location: Waseda/Nishi-waseda

3. Unagi Hashimoto
Michelin star Unagi Restaurant, quite pricey (>3000 yen)
Location: Edogawabashi

If you really want local places and also something less common.... caveat is that I went with locals so I don't know if they accept unaccompanied gaijins. My colleague brought me around.

Motsunabe (Japanese version of kway chap but in clear soup)
科学理論研究所サイエンススクール理科実験TOKYO教室

White Chicken Karage / Yakitori
やきとり宮川
3 Chome-5-1 Nihonbashikayabachō, Chūō-ku, Tōkyō-to 103-0025, Japan

Tsukishima area for Monjya - cannot remember which was the place I went to though.

Don't waste your time with overhyped ichiran. If you like hakata tonkotsu ramen, ippudo is much better. Less queueing required as well (usually the case). Ichiran is for tourists. If you really want to try ichiran, go fukuoka, plenty if store with little queue there.
