MHA says not possible to remove immigration, custom checks for departing travellers

SINGAPORE - The Republicís Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Saturday (Feb 10) that it was not possible to do away with immigration and custom checks for travellers leaving Singapore.

The ministry was responding to a proposal by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak for a single checkpoint at the Johor Causeway to improve traffic flow.
Under the proposal travellers going to Singapore would be checked at the Republicís side, and those heading into Johor checked on the Malaysian side, he said, as reported by The Star newspaper on Saturday (Feb 10).

If Singapore agrees to this proposal by Najib, it would enable Malaysians who are working here to return to their (rented?) apartment in JB much faster.

As they are now able to leave and return to the Malaysia using the Automated Self-Checking System (on the Malaysian side), doing away with the need to line up at the Singapore side to depart would save them a lot of time.

Btw, Malaysians who are Singapore PRs are able to use our Automated Self-Checking System, and do not need to line up at the counters for "International/All Passports".

Future mrt to jb will have 1 point of checkpoint so i don't see the reason why reject msia proposal for a single point as in check incoming.

Already no checks on sg side as a bus commuter. Just scan passport only. After chop passport on msia side vast bulk of people also no checks by their kastam as empty bags there to be loaded up.

Future mrt with single checkpoint will make it inevitable rentals in north sg will collapse. Even their seaside condo got a bridge link to kastam.
