i realise more and more people are losing their phone either thru carelessness or pickpocket

how do you prevent your precious smartphone from being stolen?

some steps i've taken before i buy a smartphone again

1. keep valuable in front pocket or in a sling bag in front which has a velco front flap instead of a zip which can be open easily without you noticing, velco makes a loud noise when opening

2. avoid crowded place alone, go out in group so can keep an eye out for each other

3. do not install apps that store your password, off remember password in browser

4. keep contacts backup in notebook or excel file

5. hang your smartphone on your neck

i have not lost anything since my wallet was lost on a bus 20 years ago

a pickpocket unzipped my side pocket and stole my phone using distraction tactic of 2 elderly women and 1 young children

i suspect there is an organised syndicate of pickpockets operating in singapore

they will go to different crowded places everyday to pickpocket to avoid detection by the police

they target people who are alone in crowded places, once they spot their target like when i take out my phone to take photo

they will use innocent looking elderly or little children to distract with loud conversation or ask for help

then the pickpocket will pretend to bump into you and a accomplice with an open carrier bag will pick up the phone or wallet as the pickpocket drop it into the bag as he walk by quickly

i have a feeling more and more people will lose their phone as the revenue from stolen phones grows fuelling the pickpocket industry

the trouble of changing all my password and lodging police report is not something you will enjoy

there are several solutions to this problem

blocking stolen phone imei globally - may cause sale of new phone to fall

biometric phone number - use your ic number tag to your finger print so no need sim card

Do what the people do in the 2000s

Put a lanyard and hangs in front of your body. It do look stupid but it won't be lost this way.

Or like what student in the 1990s do, put a metal chain that hooks the phone to your shorts.

Hanging a phone round the neck and/or putting it in your front shirt pocket ... beware of it being snatch by passing motorcyclists. Haven't happened here, but we'll never know.

You won't want to be pull along onto the road with the phone.

is there a product that you can charge maybe once a week which emit a loud high pitch alarm when the phone is about 2-3 metres away from you

it could be a sticker or casing that contains a rechargable battery, an rfid sensor and a powerful loudspeaker

the device can come with an rfid card which you can put in your wallet

once a thief steal your phone and exceed 2m away from u, the device stuck on your phone will emit a loud high pitch alarm

he can't escape as the loud alarm goes wherever he runs

keekeekee

if got such device i first to buy

i feel security apps and find your phone tracking software to be useless

the best is to be alerted at the point of thief or misplace of phone

While shopping around for a smartband, I've come across a couple that alerts the user when the phone goes beyond a certain distance. Can't recall which, though.

when i took mrt home yesterday

i saw an ol put her smartphone in a carrier bag that was opened

if i'm a pickpocket, i would just have to pretend to knock into her and disappear into the crowd

another ol had her wallet in an open carrier

maybe this is why pickpocket syndicate is expanding their base here

it is so easy to pickpocket and the police will just treat the case as lost item

i don't think they will investigate

i don't even think the police will contact ikea to see the cctv on that day to find the pickpocket

this means the pickpocket will steal from more people and use the money from selling the loot to bring more pickpocket over

our police force don't know do what

now the NPP only open from 12am in the afternoon and close at 11pm

last time is 24/7 one :(

eventually when more and more people lose their smartphone

people will lose their faith in smartphone

everyone will buy back nokia feature phone

revenue of telcos will plunge as feature phone don't use data

google, facebook and apple would also collapse

nokia will return as the king of mobile again because nobody wants to steal a feature phone

keekeekee
