cold-war-2012-1.jpg

Synopsis from movieXclusive.com:
In Asia's safest city, the police have long been untouchable. Approaching midnight in Hong Kong, police headquarters receives an anonymous call: a fully-loaded police van carrying the forces, most advance equipment and five highly trained officers has disappeared off the grid. The hijackers possess direct knowledge of police procedures. They're already steps ahead. The police must meet a list of demands to ensure the hostage's release, including the delivery of a large ransom. Any delay will cost lives.

According to Southcn.com, Cold War will be a crime-thriller similar to Infernal Affairs; however, the storyline will be broader and more elaborate, involving the entire Hong Kong Police force. The Hong Kong Police Department has offered any assistance to the development and production of the film.

Cast: Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Eddie Peng, Aarif Rahman, Andy On, Charlie Yeung

Movie opens 13 Sept.

Touted as this year's Infernal Affairs, Cold War has sets its sights really high to try and emulate the success one of the definitive Hong Kong crime thrillers of the last decade, but this rookie effort by writers-directors Lok Man Leung and Sunny Luk, while it had all the ingredients of a taut cat and mouse game, somehow fell through when its supporting cast didn't get the opportunity to build around the universe created, relying very much on the star powers of Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai to carry the film throughout, and the directors' efforts in closing the loop in the last act actually fell short of potential.

just watched this recently... a good film.. but nowhere near infernal affairs.

too many plots going on... seems like all involved are corrupted in some way.

The buildup was really good, but dunno why somewhere at the last 15mins there's like a rush to wrap up the film.

Cold War is red hot at the 2013 Hong Kong Film Awards, receiving 9 awards out of its 12 nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor for Tony Leung Kar Fai.

The HK cop thriller is one of the best of its genre, though slightly flawed. Its fast paced, intelligent but complex script features Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung as two assistant police commissioners who must solve a baffling case of the kidnapping of 5 police officers amidst an explosive confrontation, internal politics, ICAC investigation and a much bigger conspiracy that goes right into the core of the police organization. The two leads are thoroughly engaging in their respective roles and the best scenes are those with the two of them together. You can also see why veteran Tony Leung is a multiple award winner as he truly has that commanding presence that makes it hard for you to take your eyes off him.

The movie keeps you guessing who the mastermind is by throwing lots of red herring but ultimately, it is bogged down by some incoherent or superfluous sub-plots, especially the last scene which seems to be added on to pave way for an unnecessary sequel. Other than a few miscalculations, Cold War has brought faith to the HK film industry which seems contended on churning out commercial and sub-par co-productions with China to appease the huge demands from that market.

Looking for similar movies

Jerry, any similar movies like Cold War. I'm looking for similar movies and recommendations back into 1990s and 2000-2010 period.
