anyone can advice if for the M1, must use their RG or i can make use of my own router. when i sign up for the trial, i also sign up for the use of the loan RG.
can use your own router, but you must specify during sign up.
a switch after it is activated requires a downtime of approx 2weeks to a month

If any of the Router, own or theirs, broke down or need changing = must call them + downtime approx 2 weeks.

That's stupid.

If you are using your own router, you can just buy another one and use it straight-away, no downtime. Not sure about what will happen if you are using their RG though.

Does anyone find that the wireless signal from this HG256 very weak? alreday set to maximum of 20 liao.

I cannot get it's signal in my bedrooms. Where as my singnet 2wire can cover the whole apartment. The 2wire is switched off to avoid interference.

So it doesn't support WPA2? Ok so suppose I wanna get my own modem cum router instead of using Huawei or whatever the ISP gives, what specs do I need to look out for. I understand my current ADSL2 gateway wouldn't work on fibre optics.
So far, the only fibre gateway I've seen is the DrayTek Vigor 2110FVn

It's an all-in-one, with 2.4Ghz wireless N and VoIP ports. Unfortunately, the 4-port switch only routes at 100mb.

This is certainly a neater option, assuming it works, as opposed to having more boxes lying around the house.

i placed the RG in living room. bedrooms are less than 20m away i guess. use handphone to access internet. the signal very weak with frequent disconnection. Often cannot detect SSID also. but if i use handphone in the living room no problem at all.

Downtime for RG replacement isnt 2 weeks. Its less than 1 week. However, if you took up the router, then decide to use your router, its not advisable to do so at the moment. Have to understand M1 is not dealing with modifications alone. It involves NC also. I believe there is some delay at the moment. So if you do not want to have your service disrupted for a long time, I suggest for the moment stick to your RG first. Let both M1 & Nc settle down first.

How to use the USB host port

How is the the function of the USB port to be used? Can I plug in an external HD and save files to it wirelessly via the RG?

If so, what are the steps to do this?

Yes, can plug in external storage device.

Just enable FTP function under Advanced->USB Port and access it via any FTP client or web browser (ftp://192.168.1.1).

hello guys,

ive got a tricky qn to ask (:

here's my network setup for bridging the Hwawei HG256 router to my own Wireless router

1. connect LAN from huawei to my own router LAN
2. set DHCP cap for huawei to 200
3. set IP address of own router to 192.168.1.201
4. Change Internet IP settings on own router to static and leave everything empty

so it goes a little something like this:
RG --> HG256 (Router) ----bridged----> OWN ROUTER

with this, the internet is up on the same SUBNET.

however, the HG256 LAN port is 100mbps ready only whereas my router supports 1000mbps.

Since the IP of all my computers are assigned by the HG256 (100mbps), does that mean if i were to transfer files from PC1 to PC2, it'll have to bypass both routers?

for eg

(1000 MBPS) PC 1 --> (1000 MBPS) OWN ROUTER --> (100 MBPS) HG256 --> (100MBPS) OWN ROUTER --> (1000 MBPS) PC 2
since there's a bottleneck at HG256, does tat mean im effectively transferring at 100MBPS only?

or is the network smart is enuff to bypass the HG256 operate like this:

(1000 MBPS) PC 1 --> (1000 MBPS) OWN ROUTER --> (1000 MBPS) PC 2
with no bottleneck, files transfer at 1000 MBPS througout

plsease help guys!

thanks (:

thanks (:switches .):
