My experience with M1 Fibre & Aztech Homeplug

Today I have finally installed my ONT and below is the setup and test result I have gathered.

Summary

Overall, M1 Fibre (and maybe all fibre plan) does provide a faster surfing experience than my current Starhub 16Mbps Maxonline plan.

And yes, Homeplug does work right in between ONT and router and these certainly does provide an additional degree of flexibility in placing your router (e.g. for best wireless coverage) due to the fibre point installation may not be optimal in most instances (e.g. due to additional cost or existing setup).

However, homeplug does result in a reduction of overall raw speed. As international traffic contribute to the main bulk of traffic for a typical user and it's capped at 15Mbps for most ISP, thus, the result from all testing shows a minimum of 30+Mbps raw speed which should not caused a significant (if any) impact to the overall experience.

With homeplug, based on the test results, single digit ping performance could not be achieved. This may have an impact to online gaming users where response is critical in winning the game.

Lastly, another observation, so far, all test point are original that come with HDB installation (building was commissioned in 2001) with the exception of master bedroom. Due to installation of false wall, additional power sockets were installed by paralleling from the original terminal. Using those points yield the worse raw speed test (less than 40Mbps) as compared with the original socket.

Setup

Router : Engenius ESR9850 with v2.1.0 FW
Homeplug : 2x Aztech HL115EP
Plan : M1 100Mbps Fibre plan
Location : North-West of Singapore

Summary of results

Location is with reference to Homeplug 2.

Direct connection to ONT (RAW)

In this setup, the notebook is connected directly to the ONT with no homeplug or router in between. This is to test the RAW setup and how it perform.
