Shocked with Changing ISP for Fibre Today

After so many years after fibre broadband has been implemented, I am still very shocked at how much trouble and cost is involved in just wanting to switch ISP. I have just been reading the topics on the subject on this forum for this year alone. Apparently, the procedure is still not seamless, and pretty much hassle-laden after so many years.

I am thinking about the less tech savvy people, and if they want to make a switch. One of the things they have to consider is no downtime, which means the customer has to coordinate themselves, on when to sign up for the new service and terminate the old one, given that the potential leading problems the customer might face. Which till this day, the insufficient capacity issue is still apparent if activating the second port, and ISP taking their time to release the port if reusing the same port, etc. There is absolutely no way of finding out if a port is available PRIOR to signing up with your new ISP, and no way knowing how long the switch will take after signing up. I also read that for the second port activation itself, requires someone to be present at home for the activation, which means in total 2 appts needed for the switch, one for NLT and one for your new ISP.

And some people might want to switch ISP to save some money. BUT by switching(for example SH to M1), you have to pay a cancellation fee of $32.10, and registration charge of $58.85 to your new ISP. And also if you want no downtime, you will be paying fees for 2 ISPs for the overlapping months. I think this itself is anti-competitive, and would deter people from switching, as it could take many years to just to recoup the fees and charges from the savings.

I think switching ISP should be like switching mobile telcos. The last time I switched HP telco, it was extremely seamless, just go to your new telco and they will handle every single detail for you, including cancellation of the line with your old telco. In addition, for the cost involved, I believe I only had to pay for the new SIM card, they even gave me a $100 voucher for new phone purchase.

If I got any detail wrong above, pls feel free to correct me. I am just really surprised that switching fibre ISP still involves quite a bit of trouble today.

It all depends on NetLink Trust.

All the registration/disconnection/termination/whatevernameiscalled is collected by NetLink Trust and the money you pay to the ISP is given to NetLink Trust by the ISP. Different ISP charge differently for this sum of money to NetLink Trust. You have to check the Terms & Conditions set out by the ISP.

The downtime also depends on NetLink Trust. The notorious 2nd port activation downtime.

NetLink Trust has been slapped with many many fines for these long downtime. Recent news (like couple weeks ago), NetLink Trust was again being fined for the long downtime

Actually switching isp is nothing and i have switch from ST to M1 and now also SH. SH price is same same as M1 so why switch from SH to M1? SH has Pay Tv (fibre BB) which M1 does not.
